I was really excited to finally dive into E.Reye's debut novel and it did not disappoint. The book is divided in different acts and it is a haunted house story that will give you The Conjuring vibes

Cindy's nana has left her the house in her will. This could not come at a better time since the young single mother has no real place to call a home.

Even though Cindy worried the house was not in a safe neighbourhood, it seems she is going to have to worry more about what is locked inside the house with her than the outside.

After a couple of days in the house Cindy and her daughter start to see things moving, doors closing, possible ghosts and they start hearing voices. Is the house haunted? Why are there so many ghosts trapped here with them?

As we follow this young mother struggle enough through life she will be faced with the supernatural and will need all the help she can get to get rid of the vengeful spirits.

The story was fast paced and I really enjoyed getting to see different ghosts even though it was not particularly scary for me. There are some subplots that are presented and then never addressed again which I would have loved to see explained but this was all in all a strong debut novel and I am definitely going to check other books by the author.

Had this one on my radar for a while and picked up the Velox Books audio on sale. This is the year of Reyes it seems. I’m here for it.

Wow this book surely does away with any preamble…and I don’t mean that as a negative. I mean, of course the author sets the scene… we meet Cindy and her daughter, we know she’s moved into her grandmother’s house after it was left to her. We know she’s fleeing the abusive ex, and that she’s a student and part-time cashier. And we know that her father has been helping her out while she’s in school, even with furniture (and to the annoyance of her sister). But what happens quickly is the build up to the house’s haunting. Is that a knock at the window? A twist of a doorknob? A shadow on the stairs?

While the reader does get a smidge of that, oh no there is so much more. I felt like left and right things were taking place that were so impossible to argue or mentally push away as paranormal. The author has done away with the little steps that build into the true haunting—right from the jump in this one I was wondering what the hell they were still doing there. I mean, I know you can’t just abandon your home, but like…maybe you would if it was that haunted! The paranormal cast had me thinking of Thirteen Ghosts, and I was glad they tied back to their upbringing as kids in the house. The Emfer Zima man coming from a cousin who was too young to understand the word emphysema felt like a great plug to establish how young they were and tie nostalgia into the overall arc of the story. It brought to mind the “Fig Men” from Nick Cutter’s The Deep as well as others.

As I often say, you can tell Reyes knows his horror. He knows his tropes. And this is quite the blend of them. When the hauntings get local attention, they eventually catch the eyes and ears of ghosts investigators. They enter in the second half as a style shift that I’d liken to found footage (which I love). They spend time in the house investigating, cameras and questions that build to anything but a slow night for them.

As many of his stories are, this is infused with Hispanic-American characters and cultures. So when the ghost hunters can do nothing but confirm that the haunting is, in fact, very real, Cindy is left seeking help from elsewhere. One of the investigators links her to a spiritual cleanser that reminded me of that episode with the bruja magic from Ash Vs Evil Dead (but like a positive side). And although their arrival and help seemed a little quick for me, I loved the twist of the finale. I think the author seeded it exceptionally.

Really enjoyed this. Not the haunted house you’d investigate for sure, the haunted house you’d move towns to avoid…

Awesome book! This book reminds me of how much I like to read indie Horror Authors. An easy read and I think perfect for Halloween season (this book is filled with Halloween references)

Cindy, a young mother moves to her recently deceased grandmother's house, while weeks pass Cindy starts to have nightmares with spirits inhabitants of the house, first in her dreams then when awake, she fears for the mental health of her child and hers so she sends her with her sister just to face the house alone, which is a very bad idea!

This is not an ordinary horror book the scares come from very early in the book! the more Cindy stays in the house the scarier this story gets, E.Reyes really gets on your head and spooks the hell out of you! One thing I also love was the Hispanic-American culture that surrounds the characters, I love the narrative and the writing, this is the first book I've read by E.Reyes but I'll definitely read more after this one, if you like Horror you have to pick this one up!

What a rollercoaster of a book!

Meet Cindy Flores, a 21-year-old single mother, who inherits her grandmother’s house. Along with her daughter Mallory, Cindy is about to encounter the worst time of her life. The house, is far from a home. E.Reyes sets up The House on Moon Creek Avenue for maximum potential.

Those that inhabit the house aren't afraid to show their presence and I was surprised to be scared so early on. The vivid descriptions will give you shivers. The ghosts are enough for Cindy’s video to go viral, but what happens after that will definitely shock you.

From the beginning, the book is injected with references to fall and Halloween. In a way the book brings me back to my childhood a bit and my love of R.L. Stine books. The description of the house, the rustling of the leaves outside and the jack-o-lanterns on almost every porch, takes you to a spooky place.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book from start to finish. The chapters in the first part of the book made me feel as though they were mini-campfire ghost stories, with a haunting revealed in each of them.
Most of all, the book doesn’t just make you wish you could visit the house and its ghosts, but makes you wish you lived there to be haunted by them too. (Rating 3.5/5)

The House on Moon Creek Avenue. First off that sounds like a Goosebumps title to me and what could be wrong with that. The House is the story of Cindy and her daughter Mallory who are moving into a old house in a rough part of Devil’s Hill, a fictional town created by the author and also the setting for several of his other stories. The house used to belong to Cindy’s grandmother until she passed and Cindy inherited the house, providing her an opportunity to move out of her fathers home and some independence.

Only things aren’t quite what they seem.

E.Reyes has a great talent when it comes to layering real life drama on top of the supernatural. As previous stated Cindy’s home is in a bad part of town, exposing her and her daughter in the novels early stages to duo of creepy men at one point. These issues allow tension to grow outside of the supernatural spectres that Cindy and Mallory must face. There’s also a humorous and touching subplot when Cindy encounters a new admirer, showcasing the light touch the author can use to communicate such developments. There’s also the scares them selves. The opening chapter features a carnival of ghosts and ghouls some of which gave me of Stephen King vibes. As the story develops E.Reyes plays with all the readers senses to invoke chills. Soon the reader is berated with these scenes as is Cindy and her daughter, climaxing in a wicked twisted that I won’t spoil. Plus, the book is set at October, perfect for the autumn season.

Been looking forward to reading E. Reyes's debut novel and I did enjoy it and I want to be completely honest with my review. So, the story follows Cindy a single mother with her daughter moving into her grandmother's home after passing away and she's trying to move on and better herself and daughter but once she moves in creepy stuff happens, ghost appears and haunt Cindy and her daughter. Knowing what the book is about I was definitely into it.

I loved the premise of the story but there were certain scenes that I felt could've been cut out other than that story itself is fun and creepy.

I'm looking forward to what E. Reyes comes out with since I really like his fictional town Devil's Hill.

21 year old Cindy Flores is a single mother who just inherited her recently deceased grandmothers house.
This is a stroke of good luck for Cindy and her daughter Mallory.
Cindy is a college student and has been living with her dad and his girlfriend, so this house is a saving grace for her and her daughter. Cindy’s dad is helping with bills as well to help her get on her feet.
Everyone is just really glad to see that they are away from Cindy’s ex, who is also Mallory’s dad. He’s not a great guy and he did not treat Cindy well.
The house might not be in the best neighborhood, but it’s a house and it’s hers. All in all it seems like everything is starting to look up for the mother and daughter duo, until things suddenly aren’t anymore.
The house is perfect and cozy, reminding Cindy of her childhood...well at first.
Then Cindy starts hearing and seeing things, things that do not suggest that they are coming from a living person.
When the paranormal activity gets so bad and starts affecting both Cindy and Mallory in a negative way, Cindy ends up catching the activity on video.
The video ends up going viral and catches the attention of really well known paranormal investigation group, who offer to come to Cindy and check the place out.
The road to discovering why this is all happening is not an easy one, nor is it harmless.

I have been eyeing this book for quite some time, but always seemed to never find the time to read it. Well, I think Halloween was the perfect opportunity.
I love ghost stories, especially ones about haunted houses. It’s one of my greatest fears to live in a haunted house, so these books can tend to freak me out.
The descriptions of the paranormal entities were pretty freaky and really detailed, detailed enough to tingle my spine a bit. Probably won’t forget about them for awhile.
I really enjoyed Cindy the main character, it was easy to read from her perspective and I liked how it didn’t take her long to realize that her house was in fact haunted. Sometimes it takes the characters too much time to acknowledge that it’s paranormal and it can frustrate me and pull me out of the story a bit.
I also enjoyed that there was a bit of romance thrown in there, it wasn’t a huge deal or anything, but it was a nice addition. Ben, the romantic interest was also an awesome character. I loved how readily he believed Cindy and didn’t act like she was “crazy” or “imagining” things. It’s one of my biggest pet peeves in paranormal books when people don’t believe the main character. I get it, but it’s annoying. Ben was quick to believe her and was a nice guy, which made me happy.
I really enjoyed the addition of the paranormal investigation team, especially since they were the “real deal.” Most of the time I see the fake teams in horror books and I like to believe there are real teams out there who do it for good.
I really liked style of the book it felt nostalgic in a way, like a goosebumps book or something in that realm. I don’t know if it was the writing style or what, but I enjoyed it.
The ending was awesome! I loved the plot twist and it was a very satisfying ending that made me happy.
I’d say my only critique is that the writing came off a little clunky at times, not a lot, but just sometimes it felt a little unsure? It’s hard to describe, but it wasn’t bad and it didn’t make the book hard to read or anything.
Overall, I really enjoyed it!

Scary!!!!!

I read this in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down. I really liked the characters of Cindy and her daughter Mallory. I could see them, and all of the characters in this book. They were real people. The ghosts that start appearing in Cindy’s new home are extremely scary. I loved the references to characters and events that take place in the author’s other Devil’s Hills stories.
I disliked some of Cindy’s choices in the second half of the book. I understand the author’s reasons for them, and it doesn’t take away from the story or the conclusion, but I was disappointed.
There are also some errors throughout the book with names and words, and the tense changes occasionally, but nothing to distract from the story.
I highly recommend this book.

A fun and uber creepy haunted house story that's so original. If I would've had a whole day to sit and read, I easily could've done this one in one sitting. Some scenes were really terrifying and that's hard to find in books for me. If you dig a good haunted house story, definitely give this one a go. You won't regret it.

Do you like haunting stories? Yeah, you know you do. Who doesn't enjoy a ghost or two just to spook things up a bit? I have always enjoyed the writing of E. Reyes, but up until now I had only read his short stories. This novel took everything I love about his storytelling and expanded upon it so that we get to live a little longer in Devil's Hill (a fictional town created by Reyes that serves as the ominous setting for many of his stories).

When Cindy's grandmother passes away and she inherits her house on the "bad side of town," Cindy is excited to gain some independence for herself and her daughter, Mallory. The house reminds her of her childhood, her grandmother, and warm memories. However, shortly after moving in, Cindy starts to experience nightmares and she learns that spirits roam the halls of her new home. Fearing for the safety of herself and her daughter, she enlists the help of some ghost investigators and ultimately a curandero to help banish the ghosts from the house....except things aren't as easy as they seem and a shocking revelation is made.

One thing I appreciate about Reyes's writing is the Hispanic American influences, from the cultural references to the vocabulary used. I always feel like I am stepping into another culture and learning a little bit as I read. I also really enjoy the parallels and connections I find in his stories since many revolve around the same town, Devil's Hill. (But don't feel like you need to have read any of his other stories to enjoy this one- it's def a stand alone.) There isn't a ton of build up in the beginning of the story, and we begin to get "action" pretty early on, which made this book a total binger. The storyline is original (especially that ending that I didn't see coming- like seriously, it was so satisfying- read it, and you'll see what I mean).

If you're looking for a spooky haunted house story that'll give you the creeps, reach for this one!

E. Reyes has already won me over with his two short story collections (Devils Hill and Strange Tales of the Macabre), so when he published his first novel I was excited to check it out. It didn’t disappoint!!
.
.
When Cindy and her young daughter inherit a house from her grandmother, it seems like a dream come true; finally a home of their own. But it doesn’t take long for elation to give way to terror. Walking the familiar halls are unwanted housemates. A lot of them.
.
.
To be honest the vast number of ghosts in this story kind of threw me off for a little while...what was Reyes doing here with all of these haunts? Was he trying a little too hard? My previous experience with this author answered No, there had to be some kind of explanation. So I decided to trust Reyes and just enjoy the show. I am glad I did. Not only did he answer my questions, but made the only circumstance in the book that I was unsure about an absolutely essential part of the plot. This blissful “ohhh I get it now” feeling was only surpassed by the complete happiness I felt at the twisted, satisfying ending.
.
.
So what’s the bottom line? Stylistically you can tell that Reyes really took his time with this book. All of the things I love about this author’s short stories shined through in this novel. His ability to combine humor with scares and write it in such a way that you feel like a good friend is telling you a story is something that really works for me. I think it may work for you, too.

October books at their best. THE HOUSE ON MOON CREEK AVENUE by E. Reyes -This is not your typical haunted house book. The tension kicks off fairly early and doesn’t let up, with a variety of ghosts that keep you quivering.
Cindy is a 21 year old single mom trying to work full-time and go to school. She thinks she catches a break when she inherits her Nanas house but soon she is seeing and interacting with malevolent spirits lurking inside and outside her home. The ghosts attack throughout the day and invade the dreams of Cindy and her daughter Mallory at night. Cindy captures video of activity and post it online bringing in the Paranormal Investigation Guys, who are determined to help her out. Can the ghost be tamed so easily or is everyone involved bound to become ghosts themselves? What could’ve attracted all these mean spirits to a typically normal house?
There is some thing about @ereyeshorror writing that I cannot escape from. This book and THE HALLOWEEN GRINDHOUSE rented space in my head having me always thinking about them.

Fun, Haunting Read!

Why is this house haunted, and why are these evil entities targeting a young mother and her child? This novel dives into these haunting topics with this creepy tale about specters of all shapes and sizes. I had somewhat of an Insidious vibe, with the psychics and paranormal groups going through the house (Alexa was one of my favorite characters). There were some moments when the dialogue felt a little forced, but I could clearly picture each of the sinister beings, and I kept wanting to know more of why they were targeting this woman and her daughter. Things began coming to light when Alexa arrived, and the tension picked up and remained until the end of the novel–which ended with a twist I did not see coming. This was a great Halloween read!

A modern take on a haunted house story. I absolutely love how Reyes drops current day phrases and “real life” shit like being spooked while laying in bed scrolling Instagram and then dropping your phone on your face lol. I got “supernatural” (the show) vibes here with a spooky story but some humour as well. This story definitely took a twist I wasn’t expecting!

Riveting!! I read this book in 2 days, I just couldn’t put it down! Although I would have liked to have seen a little more dimension on characters (backstories maybe?) I was thoroughly impressed with the author’s ability to weave a story that was chilling and suspenseful all at the same time. I look forward to reading more from him in the future!

Ever felt you weren’t alone in your own house, like someone is watching you when you are in bed or in the shower?

In Devil’s Hill, these occurrences are real in the house on Moon Creek Avenue, where Cindy and her daughter Mallory just moved in. It was the house of her nana and was left to Cindy. Cindy is a single mother, dad not in the picture, and has to balance working at a grocery store as a cashier and studying online at home for a diploma. All goes well until strange things start happening in their house. A girl in a dirty gown appears in her bedroom, a wheezing man (walking on all fours) wants to grab Mallory from her wardrobe and then there is the boy outside, Sammy…

Suddenly Cindy and Mallory’s life gets turned upside down and without sleep out of fear, they have to start looking for an answer as to why these ghosts come for them.

But Cindy is not alone, her new (boy?)friend Ben helps her, a troop of ghost hunters and a medium come to her aid and then there’s Antonio, a curandero (shaman, healer) who is willing to help her find a solution!

What Reyes offers here with this story, going back to the town of Devil’s Hill (based on the town or city he lives in in Arizona) where a lot of his books are situated, is a genuine haunted house story with all the elements from the best horror movies we all know and love… Poltergeist, The Conjuring, Insidious and Thirteen Ghosts… Reyes’s love for horror movies and for Halloween is so clear in his books!

A few things that could have been a bit better (but did not spoil the entire experience of reading the novel though!) is the need of a little more in-depth of characters and some background and a little less repetition of certain sentences such as ‘the goosebumps and the hair standing up’… I guess some synonyms would help to avoid that.

Otherwise, another great Reyes novel. I have said it before, he can get far with his writing!

3,5/5

I liked some of the characters, and I really liked the premise (a girl faces a haunting head on, and won't be scared out of her own house). I also loved the feeling of cultural importance.

There was a lot of pop culture references, which some people might like because it does help you feel connected to the story - but I found it distracting. I thought some of the middle section was a bit too much like movies I've seen recently. I was also disappointed that the villain wasn't directly confronted by the protaganist.

This story might make a good introduction to the horror genra for people who haven't read much yet, it did kind of feel like a point horror book - but it was also targeted at a more mature audience, so I was kind of confused at who the primary audience was supposed to be.

Overall I thought it needed something more, but I hope to see growth from the author in the future.

This book had all of the elements that I like in a dark, creepy read: a main character who has no choice but to stay in a haunted house, in this case because she inherited the property; vulnerable situation opening her to psychic attacks through escaping an abusive relationship; and of course, the sinister apparitions themselves. The detailed descriptions of the ghosts were unsettling and as vivid as watching this novel played out as a movie. I also found it refreshing to read about Hispanic main characters, something that is rare in fiction generally, but especially in horror. The explanation at the end tying together the reasons why all the ghosts were haunting Cindy and Mallory was unexpected; I did not predict this at all. I especially loved some of the creepy protective rituals that Antonio did with Cindy. Overall this book was very original and the creepy stuff of nightmares!

I loved the narration of Sean 'DrC' Cordry, who brings out the chill and characters in this book.

Cindy is a single mother to daughter Mallory and has just inherited her recently deceased grandmothers house.
Cindy’s dad is helping with bills as well to help her get on her feet, while she is at college. Her ex is no good and did not treat Cindy well.

The house seems perfect, that is until Cindy starts hearing and seeing things, Cindy catches the paranormal activity on video. Which catches the attention of really well known paranormal investigation group, who offer to come to Cindy and help find out what is happening . A bit of romance thrown in, with this paranormal horror ghost plot.

I found this author on TikTok. I really liked that he was a self published author. I think the covers he created for his books are really cool!
Personally, I didn't feel like the writing was very strong. Usually that would make me put a book down immediately; however, the story is good. I was still invested in the characters and wanted to know what was going on.
This is E. Reyes debut book. I look forward to reading more of his books in the future. I can't wait to see how he grows as a writer!

I don’t know how fair it is to judge the audiobook over the physical copy one at times. But as much as I love this author.. and love the other work he has written. I can say listening to the audiobook did not do this one justice.
The storyline. The Scary Aspect and everything worked well.
But the narrator.. if Winnie the Pooh and Shaggy had a baby.. he made the book so annoying to listen to. Some of the dialog and scenes felt like fillers.
Sometimes I forgot how old the mother and daughter were.
This was had a hard time keeping my attention. But I did get through it..

Good Halloween Read

There Were A Few Grammar Errors And Because Of The Foul Language, I Couldn't/Wouldn't Recommend This Story To Anyone I Know. But The Story Itself Is Really Good With A Nice Dramatic Twist At The End. I Had A Good Visual Of Each Ghost And Was Creeped Out By Each One, Which Was Why I Wanted To Read It In The First Place, So I Wasn't Disappointed. If I Came Across Another Book By This Author, I Would Steel Myself For The Bad Language And Read It.
