Redmond and Haze Mysteries #7

Murder on the Sea Witch

Rate this book
When the body of a renowned British archeologist is found inside a sarcophagus he was bringing back from a dig in Egypt, Redmond and Haze must determine who aboard the Sea Witch had reason to want him dead. The method of murder suggests it was someone familiar with the funerary rites of the Ancient Egyptians, casting suspicion on members of the expedition, but there were others aboard the vessel who might have harbored a grudge against Blake Upton for reasons unconnected to the dig.

Confronted with professional jealousy, affairs of the heart, simmering resentment, and corrosive blame, Redmond and Haze must solve the case before the killer strikes again.

To write a novel was a dream of mine since I was a child. Life, my practical nature, and self-doubt got in the way, so it was decades later that an opportunity to write finally presented itself. I honestly didn't think I had what it takes to write a full-length novel, but once I faced the blank screen and my fingers touched the keyboard, everything disappeared except my characters and their surroundings, and suddenly I knew that this was what I was born to do.

Since then, I've written many books and have enjoyed some positive reviews, but sometimes, when I stop to reflect, I'm still amazed that I'm living my dream.

4.5 stars ...

A very well-written Victorian mystery series. The only reason I've rounded down is because I pegged the killer very early on. If I'd been wrong, I would have been shocked and that would have made this a 5-star read. Highly recommended series for those who are interested in 19th century mysteries.

This is the fourth book for me from this series, but I don't plan to rush into another just yet. Lord Redmond, physician, and his Scotland Yard pal Haze get involved in solving more than one murder on this outing, but the main focus is the death of a man who led a group in finding an ancient sarcophagus. Redmond and Haze must conduct extensive interviews with members of the crew and archaeologists participating in the venture.

To me MURDER ON THE SEA WITCH is the strongest book in the Redmond and Haze series.

Early on the books were pretty lightweight and I found myself barely engaged. (The romancing being particularly saccharine and predictable.) In this book though romance becomes of secondary importance and the result is a pretty solid book.

The plotting is good and the characters are interesting. The good doctor still comes off a little flat, but this works out well when contrasted to the suspects and his allies.

Can’t wait for the next book.

Cheerio darling! Such fancy pants manners that maketh man, I do believe that fellow in that badass movie Kingsmen said so - and he was right. This pair of sleuths is so cordial.

I do love a good whodunnit procedural. Round up all the suspects, first there's just way to many, everybody and their uncle is on that list but boy is it rewarding when the key suspects emerge after some sleuthing around!

So there's a whole lot of backstory I'm not privy to having just selected this book out of the whole series to match my theme but the characters do mention past events in a "recap" kind of way and it really helped.

Plot/Storyline/Themes:
I always tend to figure out the murderer early on amd as soon as they mentioned "unwrapping party" I just knew. Still - what fun. Such a curious murder! A man in a Sarcophagus without a scratch but a missing brain.
The clue is in the mummification process.

Two Sentences, A Scene or less - Characters:
Aaw! I am already fond of this duo. I will have to start at the first book though because I want to see how Daniel Haze and Jasom Redmon become partners. I also love the fact that the characters actually eat food in this book. So often atories go on or chaptera and chapters and not a single sip of water.

Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Scene:
🌸The interview (interrogation)of Jock Thomas
🌸Checking in with Mr. Edgerton Esquire who might as well be Methuselah 😂🤣
I’m not sure that man would remember his own mother,” - (Daniel)
“Given that he’s probably been practicing law since Jesus was a toddler, I can’t say I blame him,”- (Jason)

Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Quotes:
🖤 “You know, I honestly hope you never decide to go on a killing spree. You’d never be caught.” (Daniel on Jason)
🖤“I would never leave you out there in the wilderness and try to save myself. You are a part of me, the mother of my child. I would do everything in my power to bring you back from the dark place you found yourself in.” (Jason on Katie 😍)
🖤 “The Egyptians don’t care about their culture. They’d sell their own mothers if they could make a profit” (Oof so crass but facts is facts and dare I say still true today but worse, some might sell you to make a profit )

Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Concepts:
■ Corpse in a Sarcophagus
■The Dawn of The Suez Canal
■ All The Food:Meat Pies!Fried Fish! Potatoes! Venison! Coffee! Cake! Cheese pie! Mouthwatering Yum.
■Mrs Upton's Egyptian scarab necklace
■Mutes: Paid Mourners

Interesting topic

I love Redmond and Haze books. The stories reach towards human nature at its worst with the crimes and yet we have empathy from detectives who understand these deviations while still doing their jobs. In this book we see while Haze finds it hard to comprehend his wife's action while Redmond admits he cannot blame her which highlights the duality of human nature. I have enjoyed all of Irina Shapiro's books so far.

Terrific!

Wonderful series and this is another excellent murder investigation! Haze is now a Scotland Yard Detective Inspector and summons Redmond to help him with a strange death. Thus, they start trying to solve the death of an Egyptologist found inside a sarcophagus he had just discovered during a dig in Valley of the Kings! Very different situation!

Murder most foul and unfathomable

Join the intrepid team of Redmond and Haze as they unwind the facts surrounding a murder with no shortage of suspects and no discernable motive. This classic who done it will keep you guessing until the end.

1868. On return from an archaeological dig in Egypt, the expedition leader's body is discovered inside a sarcophagus. Time of death indicates he was killed on board cargo ship the Sea Witch, with its limited number of passengers. D.I. Daniel Haze now of Scotland Yard requests the help of Jason Redmond in his investigation.
An entertaining and well-written historical mystery with its likeable main characters. Another good addition to this enjoyable series.

This was… fun as all installments in this series are. But I did find it comparatively weak.

First, I take issue with some of the portrayal of Egyptology with very little reflection on colonization and the ransack of cultural goods by the West. Like with previous installments, it’s rather understandable given the time period but Redmond is usually used to provide some more progressive (read: modern) thoughts and I found that lacking in this case.

Second: I missed the wives. Part of what I appreciated about the previous books (which I also only realized now) were the pair’s interaction with the women and children in their lives. The conversations which lead to realizations, the domesticity. This was especially sad since now Redmond is a father and we didn’t get to see him interact with his daughter at all.

I also think the marital stress of Haze has been so long drawn out. While I realize this is probably an accurate depiction of marital problems, several books have ended with what appear to be progress made to their problems only for the next book in the series to set them back again. It’s getting a bit old.

Third: the twist ending of this book was satisfying, I’ll give them that. But I’m not sure that it had enough build up. It didn’t seem there were small clues hidden about in the text beforehand. I felt it was done mostly for shock value. And considering it used several very serious topics to make work, I find it a bit… problematic.

I’m not rating it too harshly (3.5 here, 3 on Goodreads) because overall I still enjoyed most of the book. It was only at the end that I realized I didn’t have the usual feeling of satisfaction that comes from closing one of these mysteries. This is the first time I’ve considered giving up the series but I’ll likely continue it to the next book at least.

Enjoyable light reading

I've made it to 7th of this series primarily because the characters are likeable and simple. The crimes are very much about human frailties rather than insane murder sprees. Unlike many series offered through Kindle Unlimited, the dialogue is natural, there are no (well, few) repetitive descriptions book after book. There is little in the books that would be considered "padding" and, unlike many, the books have been edited for spelling errors, etc. Like most series, the earlier books seem to have received more attention as far as accuracy of historical touches and language. That has slipped in this seventh book but not too badly. I doubt anyone said "I can't get my head around.." in post Civil War times. The writing reminds me of those authored by Anne Perry, leaving out some of Ns Perry's long moralistic paragraphs.
I've enjoyed the series so far and I'm surprised they are offered free to members because the writing is much better than many.

Jealousy is as cruel as the grave!
Redmond is called to London by Daniel Haze who is an inspector at Scotland Yard.
This case can make or break him in this new position. This is London not a small town and his boss has political ambitions. It is critical that Daniel get this one right!
A major player in the recent return ship coming from Egypt! Blake Upton seemed to have few enemies and was faithful to his wife! Yet his brains were sucked out through a straw and he was chloroform as well! What a gruesome way to die!
There are several people with possible motives. But they keep overlooking one key component and motive! When they discover it…. It almost costs Lord Redmond his life! Murder is vicious as the killer and their motives are exposed!!
Hold to your seat for another wild ride and crime solving at its finest!

I like this series. But I am really tired of Daniel, who is the actual inspector, playing the flunky second fiddle to Jason, who is a doctor. The extent to which this carried out has become ridiculous. Seriously - Jason runs all interviews, he comes up with all of the planned investigative activities - and Daniel is hapless dunce sidekick. It’s time for some true character development with Daniel.
Additionally, at the end of the last book Daniel’s wife enthusiastically supported their move to London and was at peace with the death of their first child, and they were again doing well as a couple. Are we readers just supposed to forget what we read as this installment pretends all of this did not happen?

Come on, Ms. Shapiro - treat us with a little more intelligence.

interesting read…

I’m amazed at how tastefully such a sensitive topic was handles by Ms. Shapiro. I’ve never seen it brought to light in other mysteries without it being given a degrading viewpoint.
Although I liked the book, it took me a while to get into the story. Not sure if it was Daniel’s attitude towards Sarah or his lack of understanding and unwillingness to forgive. Not everything in life is black and white.
Looking forward to the next installment of this series. Would certainly recommend.

Another solid addition to the series. Daniel is living in London, having taken a job with Scotland Yard, while Sarah and baby Charlotte remain in the country. Things are not well since the events of the last book where Sarah tried to poison the man who killed their son. He calls Jason to town to help him investigate the death of an archeologist, Blake Upton, who was found dead inside a sarcophagus, and the original mummy missing. The method of death was rather gruesome, and dates back to the Egyptians. He was killed by having his brain squeezed out of his head through his nose. Yikes! The suspects are the other members of the expedition, including the doctor who let Upton’s nephew die for appendicitis, the rival archaeologist and the money man watching the investor’s funds. Other suspects include those aboard the Sea Witch where Upton was murdered, including a sailor named Lewis and two women, an aunt and her niece, traveling together. The niece turned out to be in love with the expedition’s photographer and they planned to elope together upon their return to London but they had to keep their relationship a secret from the aunt who was suffocatingly controlling. The aunt knew that the niece was involved with a man but she thought it was Upton, not the photographer, so she killed him and staged it to look like the curse of the mummy to tie the death back to the expedition. Jason figured out that they were not aunt and niece at all but rather a lesbian and her younger companion who she pulled off the street to live with her after her husband died. The problem was that the younger woman was not a lesbian and wanted to marry a man. On the home front, Katie and baby Lily are doing well and Daniel plans to try to work things out with Sarah.

Murder and curses

I loved this historical whodunit staring Captain Jason Redmond and Inspector Daniel Haze. Like the other books in the series, it had a layered storyline, an intriguing mystery, surprising plot twists, and suspense. I couldn’t put it down until they wrapped up the case. Jason and Daniel are portrayed as real, relatable and complex people who have flaws and scars, but are really just trying to do their best as messy humans. Captain Jason Redmond is an American surgeon who is currently living in England after inheriting the estate and title of his grandfather. He and his wife have just had their first child and they have plans to move to London. Daniel Haze is now working as a detective inspector in London for Scotland Yard. His wife, Sarah, and his daughter are still back in Birch Hill. The couple is having difficulty after Sarah’s choices against the man responsible for their first son’s death. Daniel requests Jason’s help in London when a murder victim is discovered when a sarcophagus is unloaded from a recently docked ship. The investigation leads Daniel and Jason to unlikely places, many dead ends, and surprising revelations. As always, there are smaller side personal story arcs which enrich the main plot line and give the characters greater dimension. The story was well written and included engaging dialogue, three dimensional characters, and a captivating storyline. I am excited to continue reading to this series.

Murder on the Sea Witch finds our dynamic duo relocating to London to pursue their careers. Daniel and Sarah are not in a good place, Jason's infant daughter is thriving and he and Catherine are looking forward to the move.

The mystery was compelling. .

From a woman's perspective at a time where woman's rights are actively being attacked, it was gut punching to read how powerless women were in this time period. Daniel could easily decide he is not longer in love with his wife and put her in an asylum. The casual misogyny and the lack of understanding of mental health/postpartum depression etc that these characters display might be spot on, but made me want to vomit. Jason, with his vast life experience prior to accepting his title, is the progressive one and I want to believe that men like he existed but I don't know if that is a fictional creation by the author to keep her women readers from a total riot. Jason is still a caveman... spewing things like "she just needs to have another baby" to reclaim her balance.

Anyway, another good installment!

I do like this duo and their crime solving, but sometimes I wonder who is supposed to be the detective, Jason or Daniel?

I don't get why Shapiro is making Daniel out to be such a wimp and second hand crime solver, it's getting old quick. Don't get me wrong, I still love to open up the Redmond & Haze books, I am just a bit disappointed with that one issue.

Well, this story was, if not as good as the others, one of the funniest! I think I shall read the #8 of the Redmond and Haze Mysteries Murder in Half Moon Street at once.

(Please forgive my poor English, my excuse is I’m Swedish).

Love this series!!

The Redmond and Haze series and yes I have read each one gets better and better . The many layered stories and character developments are intriguing and progressive. Open minded and even fascinating from a Medical point of view .Now that it has moved to London the complexity of the murders as well as the societal problems involving the characters are increasingly far more interesting and intelligently portrayed. I look forward to book 8 .

Redmond and Haze always a good read.

Irina Shapiro has done it again. Redmond is an interesting character and Haze is a perfect character to play off of Lord Redmond’s lead. To truly understand the dynamics of the relationship and the characters’ histories, you really should start with the first book in the series. You won’t be disappointed and you will anxiously anticipate the next installment.

Another great story

I have really enjoyed this series. Interesting lead characters, great story line that you don't figure out who done it until the very end. Also I enjoy the relationships of the supporting characters. No sex scenes, nothing suggestive, and Daniel admitting ignorance to some of life's uncomfortable situation. Great writing thanks for many hours of entertainment.

Throughly enjoyed

Ms. Shapiro never ceases to keep my attention. Lots of twists in this one. The ending was unexpected until just before the last couple of chapters. Ms. Shapiro seems to take you by the hand and walk you through the relationships in the story until your heart aches for how hard love can be but also makes you happy to see how love can thrive and find forgiveness.

Satisfying entry in the series. As usual, lots of suspects and red herrings. I can't say I had the killer identified much before the big reveal and I had a good time accompanying Redmond and Haze as they unraveled the puzzle. I liked the change of location from the countryside to Londonb which will provide many more murders to solve that a rural setting ever could. On to the next mystery in the series!!

Another good installment!

I very much enjoy this series and look forward to future installments. I prefer the ones that involve more of the families, but it made sense for this one to stay in London. The books are well written and edited, and the solutions are supported by the logic of the investigations. Very satisfying mysteries.

This is the seventh title in the series and once again the quest for a murderer is set before Redmond and Haze. I liked the character development and that the killer wasn’t easily guessed early in the story. The next book in the series, Murder in Half Moon Street isn’t available until the 7th of June. I look forward to seeing the next installment.

Enjoyed

I am really enjoying this series. The mystery and potential suspects were interesting. I felt engaged throughout. I would like more home life and intimate interactions between Jason and Daniel and their families. I want more moments between Lord Jason and his wife Katherine including his Ward and kids. Otherwise I’m enjoying the series.

enjoyable read

As with all these books I enjoyed this one immensely, sometimes the story seems a bit long winded and I had my suspicions quite early on in the book who the murderer was, so it was a bit frustrating when Daniel Haze couldn’t work it out a bit sooner! But still an enjoyable book and I look forward to the next one.

Another good mystery

I like the way these two men are becoming great friends and confidants. Sometimes Haze second guesses himself too much which can be tiresome but I still enjoy the series very much. It is nice the characters have real issues to overcome even in their time period. They have a background that seems to include hardship like the rest of us.

Another splendid whodunit that keeps you guessing. An horrific murder where the victims brains were extracted through the nasal passage and the body placed in a peaceful repose in a sarcophagus. Daniel still estranged from Sarah, a list of suspects, and no clear-cut motive(s). A truly riveting read.
