Flame Born #2

Dark Fate

Rate this book
Ten days after the battle at Blackriver, Michael struggles with new forbidden desires, with his rampant Flame, and a deepening relationship with the taciturn werewolf, Commander Gabriel Flanagan.

Feeling responsible for their loss, Michael longs to rescue the students stolen by the manipulative vampire prince, Alexei Vasiliev. But the High Council refuses to free Michael from his chains. They fear the Whisperer — the half-breed who decimated an entire company of soldiers and came back from the dead. Yet, Michael still yearns for a future among the Guardians. For a place beside his Finnish, silver-eyed giant. For a home within the crazy supernatural world he’s now bound to.

But does Michael still have a future? He’s a descendent of the Warlock — from a bloodline that produces only monsters. If discovered, not even his protective lover can save him from certain execution. He may not want to.

Dark Fate is the second book in the Flame Born series. This MM urban fantasy/paranormal romance is action packed, featuring steaming hot scenes, a hunk of an alpha love interest, a chocolate-scented snarky vampire prince, a clever best friend who can kill a man with her little finger, and one too many shady characters to count. See inside for trigger warnings on both books.

The supernatural world will not survive the coming storm without you.

This book starts off where the first one ended. Michael is trying to learn how to control the Flame with the help of Flanagan and the other guardians of Blackriver. He also tries to prove that he is not a threat or a monster, but it's getting harder and harder with the guardians asking for DNA testing to know what he is exactly, and the Belangers out for blood and looking for any excuse to lock Michael and make him suffer in their quest for revenge. As if this is not enough, Alexei's plans are still unclear, but one thing is certain: he believes that Michael belongs to him and wants Michael to submit and accept him as his master. The Anlu'kyr and the Guardians are going head to head in an attempt to get control over Michael, and the shadow worshippers are also finally making an appearance, adding more fuel (and problems) to the ongoing conflict.

“We know you. The Whisperer. Vessel of the twin Flames. The child born without a true father, from a womb but not of it. You were created to take our freedom or give it back to us, child of the Jade Lake.”

The world-building is getting more elaborate and more detailed in this second book. We get to see different places, and it was nice to be able to get away from Blackriver for a while. The politics are conflicts between the different species are also getting clearer and more complex at the same time in this book. I have to say though that honestly, I don't really care about the guardians, except for sweet and caring Laasya and fierce and protective Flanagan. I'm not saying that I'm cheering for the Anlu'kyr, but let's just say that Alexei and Radomir and much more interesting than all the guardians put together (minus Laasya and Flanagan of course). I find the guardians hypocritical honestly. They are shallow and even though their mandate is to help and protect Channelers, they don't hesitate to treat Michael like shit simply because they don't know what he is exactly. Even after Michael acts selflessly, and risks his life to help and save them, they still don't show him any respect and are suspicious of him every time something goes wrong.

Some plot twists and revelations were shocking and unexpected, but sadly the big reveal about who’s behind the kidnapping of the students and who’s trying to stir up shit was not that unexpected. I saw it coming from miles away… It is still a good twist, but it was not a surprise at all for me. Also, Quinton does have some explaining to do, I'm still not sure I trust him, he is one shady dude...

The pace was a mild issue for me. This book is twice the length of the first one, which is great, except that not much happens in the first half. I felt like we were going around in a circle, and it was frustrating. While I enjoy longer books because it allows for more development, I feel that this book was too long for its content. Everything really important and interesting happens in the last 30%-40% of the book. It's still a good book, and the last part is intense and packed with action, but I still think that the first half dragged on for a little too long.

The Flame doesn’t seem to want the tight control. She wants to ignite and fill the room with white fire. She’s a bloody pyromaniac as well as a sex fiend.

“You’re impulsive and headstrong with a short fuse, Michael. Your grasp on authority structures is minimal. But you’re bold and brave and instinctive, and I wouldn’t be alive if you weren’t so irritatingly stubborn."

Another issue is that I still struggle to connect with Michael... I feel that in most of the book, he was always either training and being super horny because of the Flame or he was being rash and making stupid decisions. I get that using the Flame makes him horny and that it's hard to control, but seriously, I lost count of the times he wanted to touch himself in public because he was getting too horny.

The relationship between Michael and Flanagan has potential, but sadly it's not really shown in this book, as they spend most of it apart from each other. We can see that their bond is growing stronger, but there are still trust issues between them (but that's okay because trust issues and lies mean more angst 😈). They have some intense, sexy, and sweet moments together, but not nearly enough for me to really feel and appreciate the deep connection they are supposed to have as Compatibles.

I was very excited for this book... sadly it didnt teally grab me like the first book in the series.

I'll start with what I liked:

1. The world building is intricate and well though out. The lore and the myths are very interesting.

2. The few surprises that were made known through the book... Like Quinton's identity, Alexei's relationship qith Gabreiel (which we still don't know the whole extent of), as well as many other things but #Spoilers

3. The manifestation of Michael's abilities and how powerful he really is.

4. I still love how devoted Gabriel is towards Michael.

What I didn't like...
1. Michael, for most of the book, had 2 settings: Horny and masturbating or whining and making stupid decisions. I didn't connect with him at all in this book.

2. All the fondling... I mean 3 people, other than Gabriel, touched Micheal and made him come. It made me very uncomfortable. I know the reason is the "Flame" but for me, it took away from Gabriel and Michael's connection. Not to mention that 1 of those situations was clearly dub-con.

3. The book was too long, with nothing really happening for a big portion. It felt like going in circles. And for most of the book, Micheal and Gabriel aren't on page together. There intercations were either getting off, or peril.

I really think this series has alot of potential, but it also needs tightening up and polishing in some places to make it come together better, to keep the readers' interest.

I received an ARC from GRR and this is my honest review.

"His blood constantly tugs at me like an unfinished song. Like a broken tooth my tongue won't leave alone."

Well then.

I have been hanging out for book two in Kat Silver's Flame Born series and she certainly delivered with Dark Fate 💚🖤. I will try not to give anything away, but please make sure you read book 1 first before reading on! 😊

The story continues where we left off in Dark Flame, with Michael desperately trying to control and contain the Flame, with the help of his werewolf shifter lover and True Grounder, Commander Gabriel Flanagan. But the disingenuous vampire prince Alexei Vasiliev is never far away, and the blood call between him and Michael remains strong.

The various paranormal factions are all fighting for Michael's submission, with the Anlu'kyr and the Guardians going head to head and the shadow worshippers finally making an appearance, as his blood line becomes apparent and motivations and loyalties are questioned. Some of the major characters are behaving rather shadily and I certainly have my suspicions about several of them (no spoilers here though 😈).

There are some big reveals in Dark Fate. We find out more about Michael's Channeler skills, and discover that he has many other latent powers. We also find out more about Alexei and his past connection with Gabriel. Several of the 'secondary' characters also come into their own in this one (just quietly, I adore Michael's new BFF, the young witch Laasya😍).

We get some more steamy scenes in Dark Fate 🔥🔥🔥 and the relationship between Michael and Flanagan really steps up a few notches.

"And I know that emotion. That burning, overwhelming affection. A fullness so big you fear it might burst from you. I know it because I feel it too."

I have read some reviews that have concerns about the relationship between Michael and Alexei and Michael and Gabriel and Radomir and Alexei and how everything will pan out between them all. In my view, there isn't going to be a cheating issue moving forward - yes, there's a compulsion and a Blood Call and Michael is experiencing some physical changes. But Flanagan gets it and he has his own struggles. This is gonna work out okay.

The world and character building is divine and complex and perfect and I loved every last page.

Can't wait for the next book in the series.

Highly recommended.

I really dunno what to say about this series... I actually wasn't gonna pick this one up because between the vampire and the wolf and Michael? I was really confused.

I still am 😐, but the story got clearer in Dark Fate so I enjoyed it more? I still don't know. 🥲

What I can say is that the author did a better job here in the development of the facts, one could argue that it's because there is more info, but I think that the writing was clearer in here. The plot thickens so we know a little bit more about every side and we learn who the real BAD side is.

I still have questions though:
- What the fuck with the vampire and his influence on Michael? Is uncomfortable as fuck every time I saw them together, I know the vamp is hot but I always feel that Michael has no choice on this interactions and that just makes me angry af.
- What the fuck with Michael? If you want the vamp leave the wolf alone, but no, it turns out the wolf is your Soulmate so WTF? And that brings me to...
- What the fuck book? I don't like love triangles, that's one of the reasons I don't read MF as much, there are other ways to create angst! If it's a menage then... I'm all for it. 💅🏻If not stop it!!!

But anyways, I did enjoy this one more than the last one and I have theories:
- Michael get away from your "father", he shady.
- Those three bitches are gonna get it, I don't know if they are going to be a menage thing, but they at least will fuck(Michael, Gabriel and Alexei I mean). 💅🏻
- Michael is a creation of the faeries to get everything right, I don't really think he's the heir of the warlock, he's something else. 🤔🤔

I had other ones but I read this a week ago so I
don't remember what they were. But I'm glad this created a clearer path, I don't like that separation at the end, but yeah it's promising.

And what the fuck is Rakkaani? 🤔

OMG Kat Silver you have killed me dead! Peeps, don’t read this book if you haven’t read the first one, Dark Flame. Also wait until the next book comes out if you can’t handle a cliffhanger of an ending! My heart is in pieces right now. Michael and Gabriel, Michael and Alexei, and Alexei and Gabriel……ugh, I just can’t even. Somehow this is going to resolve! Michael is still under the danger of the Blood Call and very much at Alexei’s mercy, but his heart belongs to Gabriel. But is he a monster? Will anyone he has come to care about want anything to do with him when they find out the truth about his Whisperer abilities and his bloodline? It hurts my heart watching as Michael tries to reconcile his feelings regarding his situation and both men: the Lycan and the Vampire Prince. His body is undergoing a transformation awakened by vampire blood and the Flame. As he struggles to control his abilities and his body, he still can’t tell true friends from foes. Another amazing book and it is going to kill me waiting on the next one to see what happens after that ending!

“There are far worse candidates for the Anlu’kyr throne than Alexei.”
“You’re telling me you didn’t kill him because of some strategy? There’s more to it than that. I know there is.” A hell of a lot more than politics was going on when he and Alexei fought like street cats.

Does the fact that I’m cheering for the Anlu’kyr and not caring what happens with the Guardians make me a bad person? Probably, it does. But I cannot put into words how little I care for them (Laasya being the only exception because she is the best ♥). I mean it is no secret that Alexei was my favorite character in the previous book, and after reading this one still remains in that position. Do you feel the same or is it just my tendency for characters without morality?

description

Michael is not as oblivious as before, with every new information he starts seeing more clearly the bigger picture. I’d like to say the same about Gabriel. I’m still having problems connecting with him, I guess one of the main reasons is his loyalty toward the Guardians. Like I stated before, if they disappear I wouldn’t care.
My favorite parts by far were every time Alexei and Gabriel encountered and started fighting, and Michael was in the middle trying to calm the situation.

I wanted to add a special mention to Radomir. He didn’t appear much in Dark Flame, but that was enough to be on my radar. And I wasn’t mistaken, I don’t need much to know when a character is going to be a delight to read about.

After book one I couldn’t wait for this one.
It’s an absolutely enthralling story, I must confess it kept somewhat less glued to the story than the previous one.
I wanted more Michael and Gabriel, and even a stronger commitment, they will get there, you see them grow. Michael was not at his best here. The decisions he made weren’t always the good ones, he struggles a lot.
He’s inseparably connected to Alexei. The call is strong. Without spoiling I can say we haven’t seen all of Michael’s powers.
The fantasy is stunning and so well thought out, the world-building tremendously pictured.
The main and secondary characters are intriguing, engaging (not all), some evil, some questionable.
There’s enough sexiness to enjoy and enough thrill to experience to be satisfied until the next installment will be released.

Overall a sexy, adventurous well-developed story that ends in need of a continuation!

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

Dark Fate is the second book in Kat Silver’s wonderful Flame Born series and directly follows Dark Flame, so you are definitely going to want to read these books in order. I really enjoyed the first story and was quite impressed that it was Silver’s debut work, as the world building is so detailed and creative. As much as I enjoyed that first book, I found this one even better and really couldn’t put it down. Silver continues her excellent world building here, further developing the lore established in the first book. We got some big revelations in the first story about Michael’s ancestry and here we are seeing the aftermath. We learn more about the various groups that are vying one another for control and how they all interconnect and play into Michael’s past, as well as his role for what is to come. I am a big urban fantasy fan and I always love when an author can create a world that is so new and original like Silver has built here, and I am completely caught up this series.

I am late writing my review. Maybe too late, but I want to say some things.

First, this book has non-con and dubious con. This is that kind of book and that kind of series. It always was.

I LOVE these elements and it's WHY I read. It's why I LOVED the first book. I usually find these are the books that go deep and get me thinking. "Safe" books are nice for reading on the beach with a martini, but they seldom have sustenance.

I love when authors are brave enough to explore these more dangerous aspects of life. TBH, I thought these elements were toned down in this book, perhaps due to commenting. Some of the comments this poor author gets I can see being hard to take and are just down right abusive. If you don't like, then don't read. Don't stop someone writing something just because YOU are uncomfortable and didn't like it.

I thought this book was beautifully written. Kat will awaken all your senses. You'll feel you are right there in the book. It's likely why this book can be polarizing--because of how well it's written. I loved the places Kat was willing to let her characters go. There are some very complex things happening.

Michael is struggling. He's facing a whole world of creatures that are meant to be "good" and yet they are all against him. I for one, would have a hard time believing the "good" are good--if they can't recognize the difference between good and evil themselves. I would be questioning them. I don't blame Michael for wanting to hide things and suspect everyone. What else is he to do? I'd personally be telling the supposed "good" to go eff themselves. They are vainglorious, cloaked in sanctimony and I kinda hope they all get eaten by vampires.

Gabriel is in love. But he's also between a rock and a hard place. There are too many forces coming at him from all sides to do as he probably would have liked. This man's heart is pure gold. I adore him.

Alexi. Oh how I love Alexi. Dangerous. Sexy. Does what he wants ... mostly. He's got barriers to overcome too. If you look closely enough, you'll see this. I would love to see him do questionable things to Michael when he's under his "care". Michael said he would serve him. Let's dive in!

Alas though. I may always have to wonder or create my own delicious head canon. Kat has vanished and so have her books. They are no longer available. I am so glad I own them both in paperback. I hope she'll return.

Kat, if you are reading this bella, bella. Love you. I am around. Mocky xoxox

Gripping Five Star Experience!!

Riveting story swept me up from chapter one and didn’t let go until the end. I can’t wait for the next one!

Michael is such an engaging character, that combined with Silver’s beautiful writing style really hooked into the story. The entire book is super sexy. Because Michael is still learning to control and manage his flame, he’s aroused essentially all the time, which makes for a really hot read. It was great to see him and Flanagan from closer in the relationship, all the while with the alluring Alexei as an enormous question mark waiting to be unraveled. I love the dynamic between all three men and can’t wait to read whatever develops as the story continues.

This book is a great read in itself, but I suggest you start with book one, Dark Flame. Even though Dark Fate has its own story, you’ll appreciate everything you learn in Dark Flame while reading this.

10/10 for me! Highly recommend!

Intense from beginning to end!

The second in this series was as good if not better than the first. The world and its characters are all you can think about from the time you open it until the final page. The heat, passion, magic, mayhem…the detox from this will be harsh as we await the next in the series! Highly recommend!

I received a free copy of this title to read and review for Wicked Reads

Dark Fate is the second installment in the Flame Born series. Strongly suggest against reading as a standalone, as this is a continuation. I'd also advise that the novels are read back-to-back for the best entertainment value.

To be honest, I struggled to fall into the story for a large portion of the novel, simply because I couldn't remember what occurred in the first installment. According to my review, I was thoroughly entertained by Dark Flame. It had been nearly a year since I read it, the events not fresh in my mind. I believe had I reread the novel or had the ability to read both books back-to-back, the connection I felt to the story and its characters would have been greater. The anticipation following through from one installment to the next.

As it was, I was confused by the world building without a refresher, but more so put off on Michael, as he was operating in two modes: training & "taking the edge off" which became dominate factors of his personality, until he seemed one-dimensional. The fully developed, intriguing personality from Dark Flame didn't seem present in Dark Fate.

The world building is highly complex and well thought-out, the flame an intriguing concept when it comes to the magical systems. Michael's lineage coming into question as he trains his abilities with the flame.

As a True Grounder, Gabriel is the perfect balance for Michael, not only as a lover but as a solid presence in his life. There is a question on whether or not Michael can truly consent, Gabriel seems good for Michael on the surface, but that doesn't mean the blood doesn't still call to him- Alexei a dark influence that constantly beckons.

Several factions are fighting over who gets to dominate Michael, which removes Michael's ability to have autonomy over himself. I spent a considerable portion of the novel not finding any of the factions to be the good guys- all wanting to use Michael for their own gains, not giving Michael a choice in the matter. While I'm supposed to support or like many of these characters, I just kept thinking that there is nothing more evil than evil masquerading as good. They all believe themselves to be good while using Michael for their own gains, not caring what Michael needs or wants if it doesn't line up with their needs or wants.

On the other hand, Alexei is written to be the bad guy. Perhaps it's because I'm always drawn toward the antagonists, but I felt as if Alexei was being authentically himself, wishing Michael to be authentically himself with their people.

Michael's personality (what the author decided to focus on for him. A throbbing hormone with TSTL actions) the dubious physical contact that wasn't with Gabriel (which was in excess, the redundancy slowed the pacing of the story, as well as took away any and all emotional impact), and the fact that Michael and Gabriel didn't have much time together on the pages when it wasn't physical intimacy, this lessened the entertainment value for me. What I found so captivating in the first installment seemed to be missing in the second.

I am curious as to the direction the story is headed, but that same sense of anticipation I felt at the end of Dark Flame, where I was beyond eager to read the next installment, that desire is not present at the conclusion of Dark Fate.

After the first book in this series, Dark Flame, reached out and snatched my attention, I was waiting on tenterhooks for more. The author absolutely delivers here in Dark Fate, and took me on an even wilder ride than the first time.

Michael’s learning more about himself as well as about Flanagan and Alexei. Just when I think I’ve figured something out, something else would happen that made me question everything. Is Alexei really the enemy? Is Quinton really Michael’s friend (and oh, just wait until you hear more about who he really is…or is he?)? Can Michael trust Alexei’s uncle Vadim? What about the Guardians and the Council? The more I found out, the more I decided I wasn’t sure about anything anymore.

The author definitely succeeded at drawing me in to a massive web of intrigue, as well as keeping me permanently on the edge of my seat. There was even one point where I felt uncomfortable about what was going on when Michael was with Alexei and Alexei’s cousin and right-hand man Radomir right before things really started getting crazy. My brain was going in a bunch of different directions, but one thing is for sure—I’m fully cemented in this series and am going to be waiting and watching like a madwoman until the next story is released.

So, in case it wasn’t obvious…5 stars for Dark Fate for the suspense, roller coaster emotions, and holy cow insanely erotic reading experience. This is very much intended for adult readers ;-)

Another emotional and steamy book by Kat Silver, the second installment of the Flameborn series, and it doesn’t disappoint. Michael and Gabriel are two such strong characters, conflicted and yet meant for each other. Everyone wants something from Michael, it’s difficult to know who he can trust. With such terrible powers crackling under Michael’s skin you find it as frustrating as he does that no one will explain to him who is and what he is meant to do. Prince Alexi is turning out to be more than you expect, he is growing on me, he is obviously just as persuasive through the pages of a book as he is in real life (lol!), and I am worried Michael is going to lose himself. Hopefully he retains his snarky attitude, though not enough to get himself bound! A great second book, enough steam to keep it interesting, plenty of action and so beautifully written that you are hooked as soon as you pick up the book. Can’t wait for book three!

3.5 stars. I enjoyed this book for its sheer frenetic action. It was non-stop. It gives me Underworld vibes, like that secret supernatural world thing that I find so intriguing. I still don't like Michael though, if anything I like him less than in book one. He is still a complete dumbass and makes the worst possible choice every single time. The romance between him and Flanagan feels forced and one-sided. I just don't understand why Flanagan likes him so much, I understand that they have this supernatural compatibility but I'm not invested in them as a couple. However, I really want to see how this plays out, so here's hoping for a speedy release of book three.

Kat Silver delivers another mind blowing instalment. Dark Fate well and truly deserves a hell of a lot more than 5 stars.

Everyone who wanted to help Michael had an ulterior motive - i was as clueless as him as to who to trust. Could he trust Gabriel with his biggest secret? Another tough question and I didn’t blame him for doubting Gabriel’s true loyalties.

Gabriel more than proved his love and loyalty to Michael. I had tears in my eyes when things were touch and go.

I’ve got my suspicions about Quinton. Something about him isn’t right but hopefully, the next book might clear things up more.

Dark Fate is definitely, hands down, one of the best books I’ve read this year. I can’t wait to see how things go for Michael and Gabriel in the next book.

Highly recommend!

Well, I must say I am beyond frustrated. lol. I like it to an extent but not like the first one. I feel like through out the story progression (and since from book 1) Michael has only been a pawn. A somewhat powerful pawn, but is still a pawn nonetheless. I understand the reasoning for the helpless feeling it puts the readers through, but sometimes it just too much for me. Half of the time I just want to shout to Michael to grow some freaking balls and stand by his convictions. Through out the book he has been on the mercy of Alexie. I think i would have accepted the power dynamics between them if he is paired off with Alexie but that is not the case (If he ends up with Alexie, I want to get back the feelings and sanity I've invested to the series).

There were highs and lows and I thoroughly enjoyed the first part of the book until I feel like Alexie's hold on Michael is too much (That's just me. At times I couldn't concentrate on the scenes with Alexie because I am overanalysing how the story would play out).

World building is still amazing. Explaining the elements is not an information dump is which what I liked when I read the first book.

Will I read the next book? Yes. I am determined to see this through.

Flannagan, if Michael ever leave your beautiful ass, I am here. Call me.

DARK FATE is the second book in the Flame Born series and you really need to read these in order for it to make any sense.

It is still twisted, but not as dark, and the lines between 'good' and 'bad' are more blurred than ever. Michael is very confused and I don't blame him. There is so much that goes on and sometimes it is taken from his memory, leaving him not knowing, and me screaming at my Kindle.

We see more of Alexei in this book, along with other characters we met in the previous one. I have the ones I like and the ones I loathe! All of them are incredibly written though.

Being as this is book 2, there is less world-building in it, but the characters continue to develop and grow. The story moves along at a fair pace and will leave you wanting more. I honestly can't wait for the third book to come out!

Absolutely brilliant, once again, and highly recommended by me.

As it was, I was confused by the world building without a refresher, but more so put off on Michael, as he was operating in two modes: training and "taking the edge off" which became dominant factors of his personality, until he seemed one-dimensional.

There is a question on whether or not Michael can truly consent, Gabriel seems good for Michael on the surface, but that doesn't mean the blood doesn't still call to him – Alexei, a dark influence that constantly beckons.

Several factions are fighting over who gets to dominate Michael, which removes Michael's ability to have autonomy over himself. I spent a considerable portion of the novel not finding any of the factions to be the good guys – all wanting to use Michael for their own gains, not giving Michael a choice in the matter.

Michael's personality (what the author decided to focus on for him – a throbbing hormone with too-stupid-to-live actions), the dubious physical contact that wasn't with Gabriel (which was in excess, the redundancy slowed the pacing of the story, as well as took away any and all emotional impact), and the fact that Michael and Gabriel didn't have much time together on the pages when it wasn't physical intimacy, this lessened the entertainment value for me. What I found so captivating in the first installment seemed to be missing in the second.

I am curious as to the direction the story is headed, but that same sense of anticipation I felt at the end of DARK FLAME, where I was beyond eager to read the next installment, that desire is not present at the conclusion of DARK FATE.

Dark Fate is the second book in the Flame Born series. The story continues where Dark Flame left off.

With the help of his lover Gabriel, Michael struggles to learn and control his powers amidst the brewing storm that is about to wreak havoc on their lives. The vampire prince Alexei lie waiting and planning on what his next moves are in order to have Michael by his side. However, apart from the Guardians and the Anlu'kyr, there are other factions lurking in the dark who will do anything to get their hands on Michael so that he may be a weapon they wield.

I definitely had mixed feelings over this book while I was reading it. But one thing's for sure, I liked this better than the first book.

What I enjoyed:

1. The world-building and lore is top-notch. Seriously, one of this series' strongest point is the well-thought and intricate details given to the myths, creatures and the overall lore in this world. They are familiar things like witches, shifters, werewolves, vampires, etc but the author puts her own touch to make them interesting.

2. The good pacing of this book and the much better flow of things as opposed to the first book. This felt less dragging than Dark Flame. The action scenes are spaced nicely and the build up to that cliffhanger is really good.

3. The character development for Michael, Flanagan, Alexei and some of the other supporting characters is really great thing to see. Definitely added more layer and complexity to such a diverse, interesting cast. It helped in making some of them more sympathetic and likeable.

4. The unexpected reveals and plot twists involving Michael's family, Quinton's identity, the deeper connection between Alexei and Gabriel and more. Seriously, the plot thickens and I can't wait to find out more.

Not my cup of tea:

1. The sexy times gets a bit repetitive. I do understand that it's part of the lore but reading it way too often just lessens the impact it is suppose to have since IMO, some of the scenes were not needed.

2. I didn't like Michael in Dark Flame not as much as Alexei. This book made him more bearable for me as a character because there is definitely an improvement. Still for the most part he'd been whiny, being a silly goose or just horny. There were moments that I was warming up to him and then he does something that just annoyed me to no end.

Overall, Dark Fate is an action-packed and enjoyable read filled with engaging characters, fantastic world and lore and an intriguing plot that makes one to want more. Definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.

I'd give this a 4.25 stars out of 5 stars.

I received an ARC of this book via GBP and I have chosen to publish my fair and honest review.

Well damn, this is my second book I've read by Kat and that's only because I happen upon the first installment of this series. And I'm happy I did. I didn't write a review for the first book it definitely spoke for itself. So with aching anticipation I couldn't wait for the second, I gave this installment a four star review though there were things that really bugged me about this one unlike the first book.

What I liked:

* World building was spot on.
* New aspects to the Anlu'kyr that helps better understand their actions in regards to intimacies between their kind.
* Loved the history we got on Gabriel, Jasper and Alexei though nowhere near enough to really get a sense of their relationship.
* Plot was intriguing, didn't see that the council would have a hand into the students that was taken in the first book.
*The chemistry between Gabriel and Michael is scrumptious, definitely made for each other after all they are soulmates.

What I didn't like:

Note: The overall time lapse for the story from book one to two is ONE MONTH.

* It was really unclear when Gabriel and Michael went from enemies to in love with each other
* Michael was a pain in THE ass. In the first book I could see him going off half-cock because of all the protocols he has to go through and chain of command before anything can get done but after countless conversation between him and Gabriel I would think he would start making sense. NOPE. He made half ass deals without considering the consequences of making said deals, one such deal is being Alexei's for one month after knowing the Prince wants Gabriel back, KNOWING where Michael goes Gabriel will follow, KNOWING the prince is a manipulator. In essence Michael was real selfish in this book.
* Michael was fondled by three different people over the course of the book. I understand the dynamic of the Flame but it came off as a convenient excuse for Michael's helplessness, one instance being that he was immobile, though it doesn't take away the fact that ANYONE can touch him and he'll allow it because of the 'FLAME'.
* By the way the book is heading this looks like it'll turn into a M/M/M which I really don't want.
* From book one we see Michael as being helpless to the Prince however, everyone around the Prince (his kin) seemed to willingly follow him, but in Michael's case he almost falls into a trance when in Alexei's presence. The Prince says Michael takes his close off because he wants to but Michael never really remembers when he moves from point A to B. Never willing admits Alexei is his prince unless under his influence. So which is it? He wants to or is compelled to? No one (Anlu'kyr) seem to have that problem.

So, after the appetizer of "Dark Flame" comes the main course, and a filling one it is. "Dark Fate" is everything I love in paranormal stories: compelling characters, interesting world building, and plot twists that keep you guessing.

After the events of the first book, Michael faces a future of uncertainty- he's not sure who he can trust with his secret heritage or who is or isn't trying to wield him as a weapon. And to top it all off, he finds himself growing closer to Gabriel Flanagan, the commander of Blackriver base, and in some ways he finds that scares him most of all. There are definitely plot turns aplenty in the story as Michael tries to understand his lineage and the secrets (and dangers) behind his powers.

There's some nice character development in the story as Silver isn't afraid to take the time needed to create living, breathing personalities, ranging from Michael and Gabriel to their companions in Blackriver, and surprisingly Prince Alexei, who turns out to have more levels than previously thought. One criticism I've read of Michael's character is that his actions tend to be selfish and impulsive - I'd disagree though because his responses are completely understandable when viewed through the prism of his past as an orphan. One amusing scene actually involves him being called out on the behavior by Alexei, of all characters. But Michael does grow more into himself by the end of the story, even though not a lot of time elapses. A couple of scenes may upset some readers more than others due to the idea of monogamy being somewhat stretched in this book as a threesome of sorts starts to be hinted at (where it may go, who knows other than the author) with its very construct being challenged by the whole sex/magic/sex linkage.

My only criticism of the book would be minor regarding the sex scenes - they make sense in the story but the book at times walks a fine line at times of too much erotica. But I'm assuming that once Michael gains a bit more control that he'll calm down and not be quite the horndog he is in this one. I'm also hoping that there's a bit more humor in the next one with a chance for Michael to breathe a bit - as much as I loved the intensity of this one, I feel like the story would have potential for more staying power with a bit of a break for Michael. And I do get the sense that Silver has some interesting tricks up her sleeve for Michael and Gabriel.

It's been a great year for paranormal fiction with the conclusion of Hailey Turner's "Soulbound" series and great new series by Jenn Burke, Meraki P. Lyhne, Kai Butler, and now this story. I'm definitely looking forward to more.

I so wanted to give this book 5 stars like the other one but there were some things that irked me. Just some pet peeves of little old me.

1) Michael. The way he trusts everyone and at the same time trusts no one. Trusts everyone BUT the person he should actually trust. I think that’s amazing lmao. The way he continued to listen when everybody told him “Don’t trust any one, trust ME!” and he just nodded along. Whenever someone told him “Trust me, don’t tell Gabriel about it! Trust me!” And he went along and did just that. I know it’s being done for the angst and the drama but at some point it turns from suspenseful to stupid because you know the truth will come out eventually and it will be messy to everyone but Michael, somehow. Also how impulsive this grown ass man is.

2) Michael is vulnerable and has had his mind manipulated multiple times now and nobody, NOBODY, has thought to give him some sort of charm or protection spell to protect his mind. I find it odd that he surrounded by powerful witches and what? None of them know a blocking spell?. Like my first point, this is getting repetitive.

3) Gabriel and Michael’s romance. It was almost, barely, non existent. If the author wants to progress their romance slowly, it went nowhere in this book. They barely have some scenes together at first (which were nice) but then Michael starts having sexual encounters and getting horny around other men (some were dubcon, some straight up rape and some were consensual). Listen, I am poly so I personally don’t mind if Gabriel, Michael and Mr Vampire (who I keep forgetting his name) get together; that shit would be hot, but I don’t think that’s what’s going to happen here and instead we keep getting sex scenes and Michael showing attraction to someone that’s not the other MC. It feels weird. There was more progression, romance wise, between Michael and Mr. Vampire here.

4) Speaking of sexual encounters and dubcon, if I have to read one more time about Michael being “hard” and “boners” and “dick getting hard” I will rip my hair out.

5) The typos. there were multiple typos here. Including the dreaded You’re instead of Your. I think this author is new so they might not have an editor or they went on vacation on this book. I won’t judge much since my english is questionable but then again, like I always say, I am not selling you a book.

That’s it. I think. I have nothing to say about Gabriel. He was barely on this book and when he was, it was all about what could Gabriel could do for Michael so his story barely moved as well. This wasn’t his book. This book was about Michael and Mr. Vampire.

Compared to the first book, this one was much better. But similar to the first book, there were boring parts where nothing happened. Everything was also predictable - so I kinda knew what would happen from book 1. This is sad since it gets boring fast.

If I should describe this book with three words it would be horny, horny, and horny. The only thing Michael does is "release" and complain. And get his memory stolen - which I, as a reader, do not like since we know who the bad guy is but none of the characters know about it. It gets so frustrating when the characters then trust the character we know is bad and then they get shocked when they finally figure it out. I also want to be shocked along with them, not sit there and roll my eyes. And think "duuh" or "finally can we move on now?"

The relationship between Gabriel and Michael is meh - boring- since all they do is horny stuff. Sure there was one scene where they talked about Gabriel's past, but everything else was about grounding the Flame (sex, or rather edging). And that's why I don't feel the connection between these two. Soulmates? No. More like sex buddies.

Alexei has always been my favorite and I am STOKED to read more about him in the third book! He is written as the bad guy but the only thing he wanted was for Micheal to be with his own kind and to save his people. I am sure there is something else in his mind, but right now he only cares about his people. I really hope he doesn't turn into the mega bad guy. Sure he has moments where I don't like him - dubcon with Michael. I also want to know why he thinks Michael is his. Alexei has previously talked about Micheal was born to serve him and that it is in his blood to be his. But why? Which blood? The Anlu’kyr or Sable blood?

Other things I reacted to.

- Mindlink between Alexei and Michael. I easily get confused when they talk inside Michael's head since the text isn't in italic or gives any indication that they talk inside his head.

- And please do not write details about dubcon or forced sex - it is nothing sexy or hot about that. It's disgusting. I am talking with you, Vadim.

- I feel like the relationships between everyone - especially Michael and Gabriel - aren't love or human emotion but rather the flame.

But with that said, I am looking forward to the next book and I am totally on board with Alexie/Gabriel/Micheal scenes, and I really hope there will be scenes with them in the next book. But if I have to choose one of them I will always be on team Alexei.

Dark fate is book two in the Flame Born series and follows on from a few months after Dark Flame. I strongly recommend that you read book one first, as the story is a continuation and the events in book one plays a large part of the plot of book two.

The first chapter was slow, but it did help me to remember the events of book 1.

The chapter 2 happens, and boy the story soon picks up as Michael tries to plot his way through lies, manipulative people, people out to have him put down and a vampire that is intent on Michael becoming one of his obedient little soldiers.

As if that is not enough, Michael also must learn to control the flame magic in his body or kill innocent people when he loses his temper. We see Michael grow as a person in his new reality of the supernatural world. He is becoming aware that he is being manipulated by Alexi, Some of the Council, and Alexi’s Uncle all with different agendas. It was good to see that he has realised that he has been manipulated and I am intrigued to find out how that shapes his character in the next book.

Dark flame is an action thriller that will keep you biting your nails until you have no fingers left. There are kidnappings, attacks, death threats to name but a few of the events within the story, The author has the skill of suspense writing along with the mystery of who is on Michael’s side when all hell breaks loose.

Each character is unique and important to the story, even the minor characters play their part in building the mystery, suspense, and danger. My favourite characters are the mischievous Vampire and Gabriel with his protective growl. It is also interesting Michael, & Gabriel’s relationship develop, though they do not spend much time together in this book. You do feel their bond building, even with the cheeky, mischievous, and manipulative vampire meddling and of course using his blood connection to Michael, which leads to some hot and steamy moments that Michael just can not resist.

I do wonder what is instore for the three of them if they do survive this book that is *wink*

The vast story world is very well presented, even the dark woods (I think that is the name of them), which were very creepy and scary, felt very real. As does the magic that happens in the story.

Even now after book two I still have suspicions on a few of the characters motives.

A thrilling and enjoyable read, that leaves you eager for book three.
