A charming Acorn early reader about Clarke and Miguel who love adventures! I liked the focus on map making and directions using a compass, though I wonder if kids still learn about these things very much in school given GPS etc. The lack of a glossary was a big miss for me, but I did like the map and character introduction at the beginning. Also, the drawing instructions at the end will be very frustrating to young readers due to the lack of specificity. The illustrations ranged in quality a bit to me too. I do think kids will enjoy this one in spite of my quibbles. I love that the Acorn books are targeting early readers, but have chapters and unique stories.
This is a super cute book about making new friends and going on adventures! I would have loved to have a walkie talkie with a friend growing up! Can't wait to see what the kids think when this is the June book club pick for work!
A cute easy reader/early chapter book about two new friends who set out for a (neighborhood) adventure! I thought it was an engaging story and it teaches a tiny bit about map making and using a compass.
Two things that I did not like, it implies that if you follow North using your compass then that always leads you home. This is implied not just one time but two times (yes, the characters just happen to be South both times of one character's home but the way it plays out and is stated it seems like North always leads to home). Also, the characters get two large ice creams for eight cents they found on a railroad track because the ice cream man "loves treasure." Yeah, this is cute and kind on the ice cream truck driver's part but the guy's trying to make a living and this may set up false expectations about ice cream trucks. I know that's nitpicky but at this age, when kids are learning so much about the world, it seems pretty important.
Despite these things, I thought it was overall a fun book.
Great idea with somewhat perplexing execution. The protagonists, Clarke and Miguel, work on creating a map with the help of a compass, starting at Clarke's house. They walk W(est) and find a river, but on the map at the front, it looks like they would find the church before river. Had they started a couple of blocks up, they would have hit the river, because it turns. Likewise, they then go South, finding the church and a market. Ventureton, their town, does not appear to have a synagogue, mosque, or other place of worship. Going East, they find a school (that is actually west of their homes; Miguel's home is due north of Clarke's) and a park (that is east of their homes). At one point, they add the ice cream truck to their map, even though its location moves. The map at the front of the book could have included their route to make the directions used more clear.
Clarke is a girl with wavy reddish-brown hair, light brown skin, and brown eyes. Miguel is a boy with dark hair in a baseball hat, darker brown skin, and brown eyes.
Such a perfect summer reading book. Is there any better time to explore the area around your home than on those lazy summer days? What about those long...evenings in which you have nothing to do? Why not begin a treasure-hunting group of friends and go exploring... even if it's only your backyard!
That's exactly what Clarke and Miguel decide they will do, especially since Clarke is new to the neighborhood. Explorations with a friend is absolutely the best summer-time memory.
While you enjoy these great adventures with C&M, you learn what exploration tools you would pack for your summer adventures. As you explore, you can create your own area map... everything you need to know is in this book!
Children's adventure, first chapter book. Clarke moves in next door to Miguel and they discover that they both love adventures. They gift each other a compass and a walkie talkie to take on future outings. Their first order of business is using the compass to make a map of the neighborhood. A simple story that incorporates using a compass, cardinal directions, and walkie talkie lingo. Bonus points for having both a male and female protagonist.
Nice emerging reader story introducing kids to maps and directions. Keywords include walkie-talkie and a couple code words when using them. A compass and the four major directions. It also introduces the idea of a new neighbor and making friends.
A fun and engaging early reader book. I was happy to see the map and characters in the front of the book, easy for referring back to the map! This fun story might even encourage more interest in learning about maps!
Very cute early reader! Great quick read with my 5 & 3 year olds. Cute illustrations and simple plot, so it was a nice follow up to a more complicated older chapter book!
