The first rays of sun filter through the tall trees, casting a faint light on the girl lying at the water’s edge. Her tears have frozen on her pale face, a black orchid rests against her cold white skin.
When hikers find the body of a beautiful young girl on the banks of the Potomac River, Detective Amanda Steele is shaken and confused. What is the significance of the delicate flower resting on the girl’s torso? A sign of affection, or a twisted killer’s calling card?
The girl is Chloe Somner, a local nineteen-year-old ecology student well-known to the park rangers and loved by all her classmates. Searching Chloe’s home, Amanda can’t work out who could have tempted her to the water in the early hours of the morning, but a long night hunting through cold cases gives her a possible lead: twenty years ago another local girl was murdered, a red rose left on her body. But why would this killer strike again now?
Focused on the past, the last thing Amanda expects is the news that Chloe’s roommate has been found dead, another black orchid left. Terrified that more innocent victims will follow, can Amanda uncover the significance of the flowers and stop this cold-hearted killer before he returns for the next orchid girl…?
CAROLYN ARNOLD is an international bestselling and award-winning author, as well as a speaker, teacher, and inspirational mentor. She has several continuing fiction series and has nearly thirty published books. Her genre diversity offers her readers everything from cozy to hard-boiled mysteries, and thrillers to action adventures. Her crime fiction series have been praised by those in law enforcement as being accurate and entertaining. This led to her adopting the trademark: POLICE PROCEDURALS RESPECTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT™.
Carolyn was born in a small town and enjoys spending time outdoors, but she also loves the lights of a big city. Grounded by her roots and lifted by her dreams, her overactive imagination insists that she tell her stories. Her intention is to touch the hearts of millions with her books, to entertain, inspire, and empower.
She currently lives near London, Ontario, Canada with her husband and two beagles.
Carolyn Arnold brings suspense and pulse-pounding moments to her gripping crime thriller and police procedural Black Orchid Girls which is the fourth book in a series. The setting largely takes place in Prince William County in northern Virginia and features Detective Amanda Steele. Amanda, a seasoned detective, is partnered with Detective Trent Stenson. They catch a case at Leesylvania State Park when hikers find the body of a young woman along the Potomac River. There’s no identification on her and she has been staged for public display. This includes a black orchid being placed on her chest. Who is the girl? Why was she killed? What is the significance of the orchid? Did the killer know the victim or was it random?
Amanda has to balance work and family. She is fostering a young girl from a previous case and is in the process of adopting her. Her flaws and struggles made her seem realistic. While Amanda shows growth and depth as the story progresses, readers get little insight into Trent other than his work ethics. However, despite only being partners for a few months, their dynamics enhanced the story line.
What a first sentence! The novel starts with a vivid and brutal scene that immediately pulls the reader into the lives of the characters. The author does a great job of showing the dark and gritty reality of a killer at work and the devastation one leaves behind. The descriptive writing style draws one in and keeps you turning the pages. However, despite being descriptive, I couldn’t really tell that this was set in northern Virginia versus elsewhere with a nearby river. Another quibble I had was with an interview with two people which seems counter to normal procedure. It seems that they should have been interviewed separately.
The plot is suspenseful, full of chasing down leads and interviewing suspects and witnesses in anticipation of identifying and stopping the killer. The story gradually builds momentum until it finally peaks with a fantastic action scene and astonishing conclusion. I enjoyed how the author twists the plot points and provides unpredictable moments in the story. These twists and surprises keep readers on their toes. Will you see that ending coming? Themes include murder, flower symbolism, relationships, families, secrets, bullying, grief, and more.
Overall this novel was gripping, engaging, and atmospheric. This is the fourth book that I have read by this author, but the first I’ve read in this series. I can’t wait to find out what is next for Amanda and Trent. Thought-provoking and engrossing, I recommend this to those that like gritty police procedurals.
Bookouture and Carolyn Arnold provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. This is my honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way. Publication date is currently expected to be February 10, 2022. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.
------------------------ My 4 star review will be posted 3-4 days after it is published at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.
3.5 stars rounded up for a suspenseful police procedural. Detective Amanda Steele is called to the scene of a brutal murder. Before they can solve it, there is a second murder. They do eventually solve them, but not until the end did I suspect the killer. They follow several false leads. Amanda is also dealing with some personal issues. This is book 4 in the series, but it worked ok for me as a stand alone. I have read other books by this author, but none in this series. One quibble: There is a gun grab, where someone grabs an officer's gun. I am retired law enforcement. I retired 20 years ago. Four years before I retired, I was issued an anti gun grab holster. I had to be trained to use it. I had to practice and be able to draw and shoot accurately within a certain time frame. I was also trained in defensive blocking moves. I believe most police departments do the same. While this worked well as a plot device, it just seemed too easy. Gun grabs still happen , but they are not that easy. In the author's defense, the character grabbing the gun was not perceived as a threat. One quote, describing the 1st body: "The girl could have been Sleeping Beauty with a creamy pale complexion waiting for her prince to kiss her and resurrect her to life-if not for the numerous stab wounds in her torso.. And the black orchid that lay on her chest." Thanks to the author and George Arnold at Bookouture for sending me this eARC through NetGalley. #BlackOrchidGirls #NetGalley.
This is the fourth in Carolyn Arnold’s Detective Amanda Steele series. It is the first one I have read. Although it does make reference to past cases and personal history, I felt enough background information was provided so that it worked well as a standalone.
A college student, Chloe, is found dead in a state park, killed very early in the morning. She has been stripped of her clothing and possessions, posed, and a black orchid placed on her. Amanda Steele and her partner, Trent Stenson, are on the case. Was the perpetrator someone close to Chloe or is there a serial killer at large?
This was a fast, engrossing read. Amanda is a bit of a flawed character, but the death of her husband and daughter a few years earlier has had its impact on her. And, by the way, she is trying to adopt a young child, Zoe, orphaned after her parents were killed in an earlier story. I did have some questions about the partners’ procedures (really, interviewing two persons of interest together?), yet it remains a decent police procedural.
I don’t feel compelled to go back and read the prior books in the series, but am looking forward to the next one. And, I wonder if the spark that was hinted at between Amanda and Trent will ignite, or will they remain supportive friends and partners……
I love the cover for Black Orchid Girls by Carolyn Arnold, but it doesn’t matter what is on the cover when it comes to reading her books. I have read a lot of them and eagerly pick up each new story she has to share.
Amanda Steele and her partner, Trent, work for the Prince William County Police Department, and before she could even sit down at her desk, she and Trent, were called out to Leeslyvania State Park for a murder. A young woman was found, naked and cleaned of all traces of evidence, except a Black Orchid.
The gorgeous Black Orchid can represent positive and negative connotations. Can symbolize bad luck, death and black magic. Also, strength, virility, sexual desires and success.
Could the fact that Chloe Somner is deep into the environment and climate change be involved? She is a student at Geoffrey Michaels University and attends classes at the Potomac Center for Environmental Science and Policy. She is also involved with Planet Rebirth, an environmental group. She is studying the snails in Leesylvania State Park, where her body was found.
I love when a peripheral character takes center stage, and Zoe does just that. We have met her before. She has become an anchor for Amanda, a bundle of love and joy.
Also, does Amanda have romance on the horizon?
Twists and turns abound. Step by step, suspect by suspect, clue by clue…we investigate.
Characters from the Brandon Fisher FBI series make an appearance.
Carolyn Arnold is a master at penning police procedural’s that keep me on my toes, flipping pages, unable to quit reading until the last page is read. Black Orchid Girls was a quick, easy read, filled with heart in my throat suspense and edge of my seat moments that made it unputdownable.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of Black Orchid Girls by Carolyn Arnold.
Black Orchid Girls is the 4th book in the Detective Amanda Steele series that gives a solid story, but ultimately felt a little bland.
Early one morning a girl is found murdered in the Leesylvania State Park and Detective Amanda Steele and her partner Detective Trent Stenson are called in to investigate. The girl turns out to be a local college student, Chloe Sumner, with a heart for the environment and was frequently known to go to the park for the Mystery snail. Soon the detectives are given plenty of leads to begin their investigation, which include boyfriends, roommates, and rivals just to name a few.
Out of all the characters and police interviews, my favorite parts were the dynamics of Chloe's two roommates. The tension between the two felt believable and allowed them to become scene stealers when they entered the story.
My biggest issue is that it felt a little bland. The story and plot was ok and easy follow, but outside of Detective Steele you don't really see any character development. I don't necessarily need to follow Detective Stenson to his home, but at the same time I can't say I know any more about him than when I first started the book. And while we continue to follow what is going on in Detective Steele's personal life, it didn't necessarily always feel like an organic progression.
Rating: 3.5 stars
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the advanced reader copy and opportunity to provide an honest review
Book 4 in the Amanda Steele series by Carolyn Arnold, publication date 10th Feb 2022. Thank you to netgalley, Carolyn Arnold and bookouture for the ARC of black orchid girls. I am beyond a fan of this series from book 1 to book 4 I am yet to be disappointed. Before reading book 4 pick up the first 3 books it’s a must. When the body of local student Chloe is found near the river naked, posed and with a black orchid laid on her Amanda and her team are assigned the case. One thing that bothers her is the flower; why is it there and what is its significance. So many suspects but what are their motives?
I love Carolyn Arnold and the way she writes. From the very first page I was hooked right until the last page, probably why it was read in 2 sittings. The concept of the crime was really interesting as there seems to be no real reason why anyone would want Chloe dead and yet she was. I loved the way we were introduced to the suspects strangelt enough quite early on I correctly guessed the killer and I found myself talking myself out of my guess when more suspects were presented throughout . It was done very cleverly because every suspect could of been the killer quite frankly a each one of them had motive . The police procedural throughout the book was inviting , I wanted to know more and uncover all the clues along the way.
As per usual the prose was fantastic, like the others in the series the book was told in third person but this did not take away from the experience. The way scenes were described and depicted if was so easy to imagine . The striking description of Chloes body was both shocking and sad creating imaginary as if I was stood there myself. This is differently a strength that is held by the author.
Plus let’s not forget Poppy (although I completely did so was pleasantly surprised when I remembered her character) she adds a whole new detention to Ananda as a person. We’ve known her as the childless mother grieving, now she’s a foster mum with the intention to adopt Poppy. Her character is like a breath of fresh air although she’s still grieving it was interesting to read the contrast between Amanda as a detective and Amanda as a mum. That’s why I’ve always loved this series all the characters are layered and interesting and with each book I love them a little bit more. Roll on book 5!!
Would I recommend Black Orchid Girls? Yes ofcourse I would whilst recommending the entire series!! Each book is an adventure into another mystery and I always feel like the 3rd detective there to help solve the crime. Even with guessing the killer really early on , it made no difference at still needed to did out if I was correct. It’s a page turner and if I hadn’t had to give in at 5am and sleep I would of read it in one sitting! Perfect for fans of Lisa Regan, Carla Kovach, D.K Hood and Rita Herron.
Amanda Steele and her partner Detective Trent Stenson are called to the scene where a young woman has been stabbed, stripped, washed and posed with a black orchid on her chest along the Potomac River in Leesylvania State Park. She has no identification, all personal possessions are gone as well as her car. Who is the girl? Why was she killed? What is the significance of the orchid? Did the killer know the victim or was it random? Is this another serial killer? While trying to solve this case, Amanda is also trying to balance her personal life of fostering a young girl who was left with no family in their last case.
This is only my second book by Carolyn Arnold, but I will be reading more. She pulled me into this story from the first page and kept me glued to the pages. I really like Amanda, someone who has dealt with her own personal tragedy, is working on family issues and has real human flaws. She is relatable and of course has me rooting for her success in all areas. We get to know Trent a bit more in this story and their relationship seems to be growing a bit beyond the partner stage. There were several suspects to pin down with various motives and what does the black orchid have to do with it all? Research told them the black orchid can represent positive and negative connotations. Can symbolize bad luck, death and black magic. Also, strength, virility, sexual desires and success. This is an interesting police procedural with twists and turns, a step by step investigation, where Amanda and Trent don't always agree and plenty of clues to follow. Black Orchid Girls was a quick, easy read, with enough suspense to keep me interested. The killer turned out to be a complete surprise and I did not expect that ending. I am looking forward to what is next for Amanda Steele. The publisher provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.
This is the first book I've read by Carolyn Arnold, but Black Orchid Girls was recommended by a friend and the description sounded really good. Homicide Detective Amanda Steele and her partner Trent Stenson are called in when a young woman's body is found in a state park near the Potomac River. They carefully follow up on several leads, questioning witnesses and possible suspects who attend a local college. Just when they think they're close to solving the case, the killer strikes again and they need to look at all the evidence in another way.
Even though this is the fourth book in the series, it reads well as a standalone mystery. I thought there were a few loose ends as well as instances of unnatural dialogue, but I like that the book is fast-paced and suspenseful. I really like the character of Amanda and seeing how she has to balance a very demanding job with her personal life. Amanda and Trent often see things differently during the investigation, but work well together. The story provides many details about Amanda's personal life, but not much about Trent. I would love to read further books in this series and get to know both characters better. I think fans of Lisa Regan or Wendy Dranfield will enjoy this police procedural/crime thriller.
I received this ebook from NetGalley through the courtesy of Bookouture. An advance copy was provided to me at no cost, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Black Orchid Girls by Carolyn Arnold is the fourth book in the Detective Amanda Steele series. I have been following the series from the beginning and became invested in the lives of the principal characters. So imagine my joy when offered a copy for review. Once again Arnold delivered a story filled with twists, turns and a shocking end.
Nineteen-year-old college student Chloe Somner was found murdered on the banks of the Pontomac River. What made this puzzling was the manner in which the body was displayed. The killer placed a black Orchid on the victim’s torso. What was the significance of the black Orchid? Are they dealing with a serial killer or was this an isolated situation? Amanda and her partner, Trent, find themselves in a race against time to the killer before he claims another victim.
Each book in the series features a different mystery, making each easy to read as a standalone. However, to get a better understanding of the growth of the characters throughout the series, I would recommend reading the books in order.
Amanda made a life-changing decision in the previous installment. In Black Orchid Girls, she juggles the pressures associated with being a detective with this change in her life. It’s difficult, but like all the strong and independent women, she handled it like a champ.
The mystery held me captive from the discovery of the body to the taking down of the murderer. I made several attempts to figure out the villain’s identity, but each time I was off the mark. Arnold sprinkled so many breadcrumbs, which led to several potential suspects, all of whom had motive and opportunity. This, along with the many twists and turns, made for a complex mystery. As Amanda and Trent got closer to the truth, the danger intensified.
I enjoyed how well Amanda and Trent worked together. Their partnership has come along way since the first book. It also appears that a tiny spark is developing between them. This will no doubt change the dynamics of their relationship. Not sure how Arnold will handle that aspect. I will wait and see how it will play out.
In Black Orchid, Arnold delivered a suspenseful, fast-paced tale that keeps the reader on their toes from start to finish. It features characters with whom readers can relate. Fans of police procedurals, mysteries and thrillers should read this series. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading
Black Orchid Girls is #4 in the Detective Amanda Steele series. And, what a gripping story! A crime thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat! Amanda and her partner, Trent, are on the hunt to find out who killed a college student. As they are just starting into this investigation, another student is murdered. Both students have a black orchid laid on their bodies…..what is the meaning of this to the killer? I loved the personal side of Amanda with her journey to adopt a young child she became close to in book #3. Interested in where the author is going with Amanda and Trent. Can’t wait for next book in the series to come out! The ending to the story was quite surprising as I never saw it coming. I had many other outcomes but, not this one. Carolyn Arnold always writes a solid police procedural. I recommend reading the complete series….it’s always nice to know the back story to the main characters. Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and author, Carolyn Arnold, for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are solely my own
This is a great crime thriller. The body of a young woman is found naked and posed with a black orchid. Amanda and Trent want to find the killer quickly as she was brutally stabbed. She was a student at the local university so questions are put to those who knew her. The symbolism of the flower is a puzzling one and their enquiries lead them down several avenues. This is a gripping crime thriller. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Review for 'Black Orchid Girls' by Carolyn Arnold.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Carolyn Arnold, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 10th February 2022.
This is the third book I have read by this author. It is also the fourth book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'Stolen Daughters' which I also highly recommend and is the second book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series and 'The Silent Witness' which is the third book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series.
I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching stunning cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'A totally compulsive crime thriller! Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Robert Dugoni and Rachel Caine ' I am a huge fan of Lisa Regan so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Carolyn and if this is half as good as 'Stolen Daughters' and 'The Silent Witness' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of 41 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Virginia, USA 🇺🇸
This book is written in third person perspective and the protagonist is Detective Amanda Steele. The benefits of third person perspective with are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
What an ending and yet another epic read from the very talented Carolyn Arnold!!! Congratulations Carolyn on yet another page turner!! This is an extremely well written book with vivid descriptions that will suck you straight into the storyline and captivated from beginning to end. The synopsis and cover worked perfectly with the storyline.
The storyline means that there is no problem with this being read as a standalone which is what I did. I was absolutely hooked throughout, a true page turner from beginning to end. The storyline was in depth and packed with suspense, twists, turns, shocks and was an edge of your seat, nail biting and heart racing psychological thriller. I was absolutely hooked. I read this book in less than 24 hours and I'm looking forward to reading the previous book on this series as well as more to come. It certainly promises to be an epic series. It is one of the best books I have read this month and I really enjoyed and loved the perfect ending!!! It is filled with suspense, tension, mystery, shocks, love, friendship, sadness, crime and everything you could ever want in a crime novel. There were several bombshells that I was not suspecting and I am quite happy by what happened to certain people, especially at the end to a certain one, or should I say two ♥ I won't say more as not to spoil it for future readers. It is a true page turner that will leave you biting your nails on the edge of your seat with your heart racing. I loved the ending and I cannot wait to see what Amanda is going to do now!!!! Hope your busy typing the next one up Carolyn as I cannot wait!!!
Although this is the fourth book in the series you will have absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
I loved meeting all the characters again who were all strong, well defined and unique. I became completely invested in Amanda, Trent and Zoe. Amanda is absolutely whoop a## and I love seeing strong female leads in books. She has a background but will not let it pull her down and she is definitely someone I would love to have on my side. It was so bitter sweet watching her bond with Zoe even more and watching their relationship develop and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. I personally hope she gets the happiness and family she deserves but then at the same time how will she work everything out?? I am glad that a certain thing didn't happen, again I won't say more as not wanting to spoil it for others!! One can only wait and see!! Trent is another fantastic team member and they work perfectly well together. I would love to see more happen between these two amazing characters but again only time will tell!! I loved Rideout's (medical examiner) character and personality with his morgue humour and I also quite like Malone and see him as a sort of fatherly figure to Amanda. I am definitely looking forward to meeting them all again!!!
I could not praise this book enough and highly recommend. Carolyn I cannot wait to read more of your very successful work!!! I would also love to see this book turned into a movie. An absolutely addictive, compelling and gripping true page turner!!! If you have not read any books by this epic authour then you are seriously missing out!!!
Some of my favourite quotes/sayings in this book include the following:
🖤 "“Everything will be okay in the end; if it’s not okay, it’s not the end.” Maybe there was some merit to that saying, after all."
Overall an absolutely captivating, engrossing page turner that is compelling and addictive!!!
Genres covered in this novel include Thriller, Mystery, Police Procedural, Suspense, Hardboiled, Romance Novel, Psychological Thriller, Noir Fiction, Psychological Fiction and Crime Fiction amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Carol Wyer, Lisa Regan, Robert Dugoni, Rachel Caine, Angela Marsons and ANYONE looking for an epic page turner .
318 pages.
This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 5/5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

A young student murdered in a nature reserve, whose naked body is arranged with the eponymous black orchid, opens the latest case for Detectives Amanda Steele and Trent Stenson. A number of potential suspects attract their attention, but there's a big distraction for Amanda on the home front too, leading to inner conflict and frustration. Even after the victim's identity is revealed, the investigation's stymied by lack of further evidence, witnesses or confirmed suspects. Is another serial killer on the loose and is there a link to a previous cold case murder?
Carolyn Arnold's tense, psychological murder-mystery Black Orchid Girls, is definitely one to keep you guessing right to the end. If you want to check your theory against the thrillingly revealed answer to whodunnit, get your detective's thinking cap on, dust off your metaphorical magnifying glass and grab your copy today...you'll read all night
So much suspense - Amanda and Trent are called to the scene of a brutal murder. A young woman stabbed to death in a local park - research for a mysterious snail and the environment loves in her life. So why was she murdered, a black orchid left on her nude body? Along with Amanda's family issues - an older brother holding a grudge. Her petition to adopt Zoec may be contested. Great read. Loved the characters.
Another fun book in this series! This was missing the urgency in the case that makes police procedurals unputdownable. I don’t know what exactly it was missing, but it was missing that “spark” that makes the reader turn the pages frantically. I enjoyed the character development and found the case to be a good one. Just missing a little spark that the other books had. I’m excited to see where the characters go and look forward to the next book in the series!
Black Orchid Girls is the fourth instalment in Carolyn Arnold's Detective Amanda Steele series, set in Dumfries, Virginia.
With its excellent plot and comfortable pacing, I had difficulty putting this book down between chapters. Black Orchid Girls was such a compelling read, and I relished every moment. Detective Amanda Steele is really well-drawn - a determined, passionate though sometimes a reckless woman who had an inclination to be acerbic with her colleagues. In Black Orchid Girls Chloe Somner, a local nineteen-year-old ecology student is found dead at the Potomac River, Leesylvania State, Park, Virginia with a delicate black orchid resting on her chest. Trawling through cold cases, working with Detective Trent Stenson, there is a discovery that twenty years ago another local girl was murdered, a red rose left on her body.
This riveting tale was complex and Carolyn Arnold brilliantly builds the suspense. The intoxicating story also allowed the reader to learn more about protagonist Amanda, especially the dynamics with her home life. Danger, drama, along with several twists and enough mystery and intrigue to compel me to read late into the night, this was an absolutely cracking piece of crime fiction, superbly delivered and the ending is surprising. I'm keen to devour book 5.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
Detective Amanda Steele is back with another crime!
Chloe Somner, a college student who is an environmentalist was found stabbed seven times, naked with a black orchid resting on her chest. Detectives Amanda Steele and her partner Trent were assigned to the case and finds many suspects who had a motive to kill Chloe--Josh, her ex-boyfriend, Ashton, who was bullied by Chloe and Josh back in high school, Luke and Stephanie, who thought Chloe was a competition. Luke had feelings towards Chloe who rejected him. Amanda also finds a similar case that happened almost twenty years ago to another college student who died in the similar fashion. Is there a serial killer on loose or does someone have a vendetta against Chloe Somner.
This is the fourth book of the Detective Steele case and so far, this book had been one of my favorite series! Too many viable suspects that you are clueless as to who would have a motive to kill Chloe, the drama, the romance...I felt like I was watching a movie, sitting at the edge of my seat, wondering what is going to happen next. The writing is spot on, the author does a good job of keeping the reader interested and immersed into the story. The forensics, the autopsies all looked like I was watching an episode of CSI or Law and Order and I couldn't actually wait to see who would be the killer. The killer turned out to be a complete surprise and unexpected that I did not expect that ending. This was a fast paced thriller filled with twists and turns that you didn't expect.
Overall, this is an unputdownable thriller that will keep you awake at all night! Worth five stars!
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily. Detective Amanda Steele and her partner, Trent Stenson, get called to a morbidly curious crime scene. A young woman's body has been found. She is completely nude with a black orchid placed on her chest and her hands wrapped around it. There is no identification around the body initially. They soon find out it is a 19 year old ecology student from the local university. As the detectives delve deep into this crime you will have a multitude of suspects to choose from. Shortly thereafter Chloe's roommate is found dead in the same park with a black orchid placed on her body. You will be drawn into the bizarre world of competitive education, lies and deceit and people who are not who they appear to be. This is a superb thriller that will captivate you from the beginning. It is tense and electric. In these detectives' minds there is nothing worse than a serial killer loose not only in their town but especially in a college town full of young female co-eds. Amanda Steele is a very likeable character with a sharp mind for clues. The jaw dropping ending will have you cheering for more! Forget about sleep because you will not be able to put this one down! Sleep is overrated anyway especially when you have a good book to read! Carolyn Arnold has written another winner!
When hikers find the body of a beautiful young girl on the banks of the Potomac River, Detective Amanda Steele is shaken and confused. What is the significance of the delicate flower resting on the girl’s torso? The girl is Chloe Somner, a local nineteen-year-old ecology student well-known to the park rangers and loved by all her classmates. Twenty years ago another local girl was murdered, a red rose left on her body. Are they linked? Focused on the past, the last thing Amanda expects is the news that Chloe’s roommate has been found dead, another black orchid left. This is the fourth outing for Amanda & it could easily be read on its own. I was drawn in from the first sentence & whilst that was gripping I felt the momentum was lost a bit in the middle & then it picked up again for an action packed conclusion. That said I thoroughly enjoyed the twists & turns & how Amanda chased leads, interviewed suspects & eventually identified the villain. She's aided again by Trent Stenson who is still somewhat of a mystery to me, hopefully his character will grow in future books. A well written murder mystery, which I recommend My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
The Black Orchid is the fourth book in the Det. Amanda Steele Series. This is my second book of the series. Each book can be a stand alone read, but I prefer to start at the beginning to get all the back story. I really like this series and am looking forward to the continuation.
Chloe Somner, a college student, was found stabbed seven times, naked with a black orchid resting on her chest. Detectives Amanda Steele and her partner Trent are called to the scene and and work the case to discover who had a motive to kill Chloe. While investigating a room mate of Chole's is found murdered just like Chloe.
I enjoyed learning more about how Zoe and Amanda's relationship had progressed from the previous book. Watching Amanda move on from the past adds to the depth of the character development as well as the other relationships in the book. This is a fast paced thriller filled with fabulous twists and turns since it is in a college setting there are many suspects. The reveal of the killer is a totally worth while ending.
I received an ARC from NetGalley for an unbiased review.
This is the first book I’ve read by Carolyn Arnold and I’m wondering what took me so long! Black Orchid Girls is a perfectly paced, tightly plotted crime thriller, expertly mixing the case with elements of Detective Amanda Steele’s personal life. Both elements ramp up the tension! There’s a terrific sense of urgency when it comes to the investigation. The police procedural elements, slipped in amongst the action, had me biting my nails as Amanda and her partner Trent wait for crucial evidence from phone companies etc. The sub-plot relating to Zoe, a young child Amanda met through an earlier case, is every bit as compelling. I’m keen to find out more of the background now, but I had no problem launching in with this fourth book in the series. First-rate – I’m hooked!
I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of this book from Netgalley and this is my honest review. The Amanda Steele books have quickly become one of my favourite series, I've been following it since the first book but I think that this could be read as a standalone although I think it would be more enjoyable having read the previous books for more of Amanda's back story.
The thing that I was most looking forward to about this book was seeing how things had worked out for Amanda and Zoe, that was such a highlight from the previous book. I think that's definitely what makes this series so strong, Amanda was in such a dark place in the first book and I've loved the character development over these books to get her to this point. I would keep reading just for that but I like that there's always a good mystery as well. This book kept me guessing right up to the very end and although I enjoyed that there was a running storyline woven through the previous books, it was also nice to read something a bit different this time. I hadn't realised that Brandon, one of the supporting characters has his own series before now so I'm looking forward to catching up on those while I wait for Amanda's next installment, hopefully it won't be too long!
I thoroughly enjoyed Black Orchid Girls (Detective Amanda Steele Book 4) by Carolyn Arnold. I liked this book so much that I scoured the library for other books in this series and her other series. I also have bought some from the bookstore. What I like is the way the author weaves the story. She does not include any unnecessary details or information to pull a reader from the storyline. The writing is crisp, fast-paced, and entertaining. I liked the main characters, and each character was written in reality.
I'm looking forward to more in this series and other Carolyn Arnold mystery series. The book was a good mystery with tense moments that kept my interest. I would recommend this book and others by this author.
How far would you go if one of your loved ones was displaced, humiliated and bullied? Another great addition to this series, a bit of duplication, however each book flows into the next. The plots are realistic and I feel the personal lives of Amanda and Trent are going to get interesting. Maybe not quite as good as Angela Marsons, but getting there.
Full disclosure - I was provided an advanced reader’s copy of this book by the authors but have voluntarily provided a review. All opinions are my own.
Protective Instincts
She was young, smart, and beautiful. An activist who loved protecting the environment down to the smallest snail. But when she is discovered naked, stabbed multiple times, and dramatically posed in her beloved state park with a black orchid adorning her chest, the speculations fly. Who would want to murder Chloe Sumner in this most brutal way? Was it a jealous classmate, an unrequited crush, class rival, ex-boyfriend, or someone entirely different? Detectives Steele and Stenson are on the case, following up lead after lead but the more progress they make, there always seems to be something that sets them back. Then when a second body is discovered the rumblings of a serial killer begin. The similarities between Chloe’s murder and the newest victim are almost identical but also very similar to a cold case from twenty years ago. Is there a possibility that the killer has returned, but why now? As Amanda gets closer to the truth, she also must navigate a personal development that may threaten her looming adoption of Zoe. Can she keep her personal concerns out of her professional life, or will her growing affection for the little girl cause a distraction that ends up placing Detective Steele in harm’s way?
Black Orchid Girls is the fourth in the Detective Amanda Steele series of books by international best-selling author Carolyn Arnold. Picking up shortly after the close of “The Silent Witness”, Amanda and the orphaned Zoe have settled into a comfortable routine. While Zoe may never be a replacement for Amanda’s daughter she is helping to heal old wounds and vanquish the demons of grief. Having read this series from the beginning, the change in Detective Steele from “The Little Grave” and “Black Orchid Girls” is like night and day. The once resigned, self-destructive, hard-hearted Amanda is more vibrant, optimistic, and levelheaded. As I get more into this series it is apparent that this is not your typical police procedural novel. In crafting this series, Arnold has taken great care to provide a realistic backstory for even what seems to be the smallest character. In this approach we also see some backstories interweaving with characters in other books. I like this as it leaves options open for a larger cross-story adventure in the future rather than the occasional Brandon Fisher cameo. With Black Orchid Girls, Arnold has once again delivered a page-turner of a novel that will have the reader guessing until the final reveal. As with all of Arnold’s books that I have read to date, even though this is part of a larger series, Black Orchid Girls can also be enjoyed as a standalone novel without the reader feeling as if they are missing parts of the story. With this chapter of Detective Steele’s life coming to a close along with the case, I am eager to see what Carolyn Arnold has planned in the upcoming books in this series.
Black Orchid Girls by Carolyn Arnold is the 4th book in her fantastic Detective Amanda Steele series. I have noted this many times, that I am a big fan of Arnold, having read most of her series, and I love this series, which I feel is the best one yet.
Amanda Steele, our heroine, is a homicide detective in Dumfries, Virginia Police Department. She is called with her partner, Trent to a scene where a girl (local college student) is found murdered in the forest of Leesylvania State Park. The dead girl was stabbed 7 times, with the murderer cleansing her body and leaving a black orchid flower on her. What does the Black Orchid mean: sign of affection, or a dark death wish?
Both Amanda and Trent learn more about the girl (Chloe), especially after they meet her two roommates and find out more information about her ex-boyfriend, as well as students who hated her. Josh the boyfriend was a suspect, since he supposedly sent her a message to meet him at the park; and another boy was also suspected, since he dropped off someone at the park. Both Amanda and Trent have their hands full, investigating all the suspects, including another boy and girl who hated Chloe. While deep in their investigation, another girl is murdered, found the same way as the previous girl. Is this a serial killer?
While deep in the case, Amanda also worries about Zoe, the young girl she is adopting; seems the biological father wants to meet her, to perhaps fight for custody. Amanda does her best to spend time with Zoe, as she has come to love her; luckily Amanda has friends who can watch her while she is spending long hours at work. Amanda’s feels the pressure of the case, as well as concern about Zoe.
What follows is an exciting, intriguing, tense mystery that kept me unable to put the book down. There were so many suspects, and even surprises at the end. To say too much more would be spoilers, and this was a very good story that needs to be read from start to finish.
Black Orchid Girls was a very good excellent crime thriller that was suspenseful, intense, and kept us guessing who was the murderer to the end. I loved the team of Amanda, Trent & her Sergeant, as well as many of the secondary characters. Amanda is a great heroine, and a fantastic detective. Black Orchid Girls was so very well written by Carolyn Arnold, and I cannot wait to see what she has in store for us next. If you like mystery thrillers, police procedural, then you need to be reading this book.
Black Orchid Girls by Carolyn Arnold is another murder mystery locked up for Detective Amanda Steele and her partner, Detective Trent Stenson had been called out early to a murder scene on the banks of the Potomac. A beautiful young girl, 20 or so, laid out nude, with a Black Orchid placed on her chest. It was enough to make one cry. Even hardened murder teams. Who could have done such a well-planned and orchestrated act? The investigation began, as always, with assumptions and errors. They notified her parents. That, as always, had been horrible. Then her boyfriend, pretty awful, too, although they had supposedly broken up. Next, her roommates. What a pair they were. They enlisted Amanda's brother, Kyle, to see if he could identify the make of a car with no more than the headlights visible. He narrowed it down considerably. Still the investigation moved on. Another body. Eliminated suspects: they were in lockup. More investigating.
Amanda Steele is a complicated character and a moving one. She is in the process of adopting a little girl, Zoe, who had seen her parents brutally murdered only a couple of months ago. Amanda and Zoe had bonded almost immediately but such things were never meant to be easy or smooth. Then there were the odd moments with Trent recently. The plot was a good one. Almost a serial killer, but not quite. It was certainly unexpected when they figured it out, and nearly fatal. As Always, Arnold has written an engaging and thought-provoking murder mystery/police procedural. The police are part of the story. They have lives, too.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Black Orchid Girls by Bookoutre, through Net galley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. #netgalley #bookoutre #blackorchidgirls #carolynarnold
