What Lies Between us By H.D. Carlton
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
There isn't a book I have loved from the author. My only complaint is that I was left wanting more.

Echo was assured of murdering his ex-girlfriend and has always been attracted to Link, his ex’s twin brother. Link feels betrayed and angry; he feels Echo got away with murder. But really, so much more lies underneath between the two.

The author delivered a suspenseful mystery with a spooky background—an Academy with secret passages and things that bump in the night. No detail was left out. I love when that happens. I can picture the books as a movie when my mind.

The push-pull and angst make when these two are together explosive. Echo and link together is a scorcher. It was so freaking hot.

I was addicted from the start, and I don't remember the last time I was so excited to wait for the full length.

Forbidden Secrets by A.R. Breck

Being that this was a short story within this anthropology gave me enough of a snippet for what’s to come which I’m hoping delves deeper into their lives which will allow me to connect with them on a stronger level than I did.

But all in all there was just enough grit, just enough romance, just enough to have me begging for more.

So far I have only read Damaged Hearts by C. Hallman and JL Beck and it was spectacular and kept me glued and invested to this book until the end.
This book begins with Julie being captive in an unbelievable scenario. It is devastating and brutal. Markus and Fallon arrive on the scene and Markus’s brother steps in to help out. Beautifully written, sad at times, but I need more of their story!

Having finished most of the stories,i can safely say this is quite the boxset.
I enjoyed a lot of them,but some a little less….
That’s because of personal taste rather than bad writing, though.
So,while i may have liked a couple…not so much….you might still enjoy them.

4 stars: C Hallman & JL Beck’s Damaged Hearts is the story of what happened to Julie when her father couldn’t pay his debts.
She was taken and prepared to be sold.
But when she panicked and tried to run,she was beaten and put back in one of the cells.
What happened to her in that cell was the stuff of nightmares.
Sure, she still had her virginity, but everything else was taken from her.
Just when she was on the verge of giving up,when her body had reached it’s limit, someone came and bought her.
But he didn’t keep her,he handed her over to Felix…..
Would he be her saviour,or the man that took what little she had left??
If you’d ask Felix,he’d probably say the last.
Because he thought of himself as her worst possible choice in men…..

4 stars: Lola West’s Mortal Beasts is the story of Ana and how she was saved by a boy on the night her mother was killed.
She went to stay with the only family her mother trusted and grew up to be one of their best assassins.
Her latest assignment brings her face to face with the boy that saved her,who has grown into a ruthless and powerful businessman.
The moment she sees Roman, she knows she can’t kill him, even if that means he’s going to kill her.
But Roman knows he has to kill her…even if her face helped him sleep at night.
When the unknown traitor starts killing people near him,Ana offers her help and her family’s as well.
Once they know who Roman is,they’ll be all in,right?
Will they get out of this mess alive?
And will they find the traitor in time, before more people are killed?

4 stars: Morgan James’ Collide tells the story of how Hannah found an unexpected home in the Blue Ridge mountains.
After breaking up with Zeke, she decided it was time to travel to the area that was renamed the Blue Ridge Triangle because of the disappearance of travelers on a regular basis.
Because of what was called the Beast of Blue Ridge.
Her journey went well until she made the foolish decision to keep driving when she shouldn’t have and nearly killed herself when trying to avoid a deer.
When she came to,she was in a strange bed,in a strange cabin,with a darkhaired,rough looking stranger.
He was grumpy and distant at first, but slowly she started to see more in him.
There was an attraction there, and she wanted to make him lose control to see what he’d do.
What happened when he finally did,was beyond her wildest dreams, and she couldn’t get enough.
Judd had retreated to his cabin after a failed relationship,to find the peace and quiet he so badly needed.
Finding this young woman in her wrecked car meant that peace and quiet was disturbed, and he did his best to keep his distance from her.
Until she pushed too hard, and he lost control….
What happened then was beyond his wildest dreams, and he knew he would never let her go.
And then her ex found them….

4 stars: A.R. Breck’s Forbidden Secrets is the story of the princess in the tower that falls for the poor man that saves her.
Lux is the daughter of a rich businessman who promised her to Watson with the sole purpose of combining his business with the man he tells her she’s going to marry.
But Lux hates Watson. He’s cruel, and sleeps around.
His latest stunt at her parent’s fundraiser is too much for her and she leaves early. Only, she’s attacked by a homeless man determined to rape the pretty princess. Luckily,Sebastian is there to save her….and do delicious dirty things to her, before sending her home.
That is the start of a possibility to have a life for Lux….if she dares.
From the moment Sebastian saw Lux for the first time, she’s been on his mind, and he can’t help, but follow her.
Seeing the way her fiancé treats her makes him see red,and he barely refrains from hurting the bastard.
He would claim her for himself if he wasn’t the last person she should be with.
Until he needs to save her again…..

4 stars: Brynn Ford’s Unseen is the story of how Merrick killed Ryan, who worked for the enemy.
And part of Ryan is sent to the enemy as a message.
But when he sees what Ryan had in his basement,he regrets killing him.
Because he wanted to make him suffer for what he’d done.
The broken girl in the basement, like everything else in that house, is his now and he’s going to keep her.
The more he sees of her,the more her broken darkness calls to him.
She submits só beautifully, even after all she’d been through….and he can see that she likes what he gives her, even if she worries it’s not real.
He’ll show her it’s real until she believes him, though!

Willa had been in the basement, blindfolded and used by Ryan and his friends for a long time.
When Merrick takes her, she’s worried, frightened and confused.
She knows his reputation,and it’s not pretty….
What will that mean for her, will he keep her, sell her or kill her?
But what if she starts to wánt him to keep her???
His darkness calls to hers, and she likes it….
The girl that emerges from the broken parts is a woman fit to be his queen.

4 stars: D.W. Marshall’s Depraved is the story of August. He thought he was a born bachelor until he met Elodie.
She changed him,and made him happy, until she was killed by a truck while she was on the phone with him.
Now,he’s struggling to get through the days, lost and hurting.
His best friend Clyde does his best to help, but nothing works.
Until August’s psychiatrist Sheila takes him home after bailing him from jail.
Her friendship gives him the peace he needed all along, and he starts to see a way forward again.
Until he finds Elodie’s phone…and once charged, messages to and from a man called Joshua.
That makes him doubt everything he knew, and he needs to know what Joshua meant to her most of all.
Will he find him,and if he does, what will he hear?
What will it mean for the future he started to see?

4 stars: ML Philpitt’s The Desire in Deception is the story of Caterina, daughter of Leo Bellini.
Life in the mafia is hard, and she knows it.
Because she’s forced to marry Franco Rossi, simply because it benefits her father. Only, she doesn’t…because Franco is killed by a stranger, who abducts her next.
A stranger that seems to know her, though.
A stranger with a agenda that involves her….and her virginity.
He keeps calling her Kitty Cat,and she knóws she’s heard that name before!
When she remembers, she can’t reconcile that boy with this ruthless man.
Because Enzo was kind, and Lorenzo took her without remorse.
But when he reveals the reasons behind his actions, she starts to understand why he did it.
And even though her father hates the idea of her marrying Lorenzo Corsetti, there’s no other option after what he did to her….

When his father is killed by Franco,on the orders of someone else, the only thing on Enzo’s mind is revenge.
To kill the man responsible and the one that gave the order.
Finding out who that man is,and hearing the reason behind it,gives him the idea for the ultimate revenge.
Kill Franco, and take what was meant to be his,Caterina.
Knowing she’s still a virgin, there’s a way to make sure Leo can’t take her from him,and he doesn’t hesitate, even if it hurts her.
But deep down,he likes his Kitty Cat,and he hopes she doesn’t hate him…too much.

3 stars: Sahara Roberts & Dori Pulitano’s Carnage Heart is the beginning of Beckett and Celestina’s story, and it isn’t pretty.
He’s been hired to kidnap her,and kill her when demanded.
After leaving the army, and having survived prison, too,he’s put his skills as sniper to good use.
But kidnapping a woman, one as beautiful as Celestina?
That’s a first, and what he feared would happen, does indeed happen….he starts to care about her.
But when he tells the man that hired him he won’t kill the girl, all hell breaks loose.
He calls a friend for help, and tells the poor girl they have no future…..even if she disagrees.
Their story will continue….

3 stars: H.D. Carlton’s What Lies Between Us is situated at Godric University,a place where parents send their misbehaving kids, the ones that are uncontrollable.
A building that used to be an asylum, and is still haunted by the lost souls that stayed there….
That’s where we meet Echo, who is being blamed for Leighton’s death by not only her twinbrother Link, but almost everyone at the University.
Even though he was not convicted of the crime.
In fact there’s only one person that believes in his innocence and that’s Minnie.
She knows how his relationship with Leighton really was….and who he really wants. But miracles dó happen in this desolate place when Link hears his friend Colin may have a devastating plan to get rid of Echo.
He finally lets go of his anger and pain long enough to listen to what Echo tried to tell him all along.
And finds he’s still attracted to him….
The story leaves the reader with the question who díd kill Leighton?
And will they strike again?

3 stars: Elizabeth Miller’s Cardinal Sin is the story of Luca, the unwanted and abandoned boy who grew up to be a merciless killer for the mafia.
Who was taken by a man that cared, and was raised by an uncaring and mean woman, who tried to teach him purity through the lashes of her belt.
Once he was old enough,he joined the SEALs and found out what he was good at. Which he kept doing when he left, until he was asked to work for the house of Cabello. The Cosa Nostra.
That’s where he found something precious, something he would kill to have, but knew he never could.
Cabello’s daughter,Vivienne.
She saw the man he was, unlike her cruel and selfish cousin,Sofia.
But Sofia was determined to have this cruel man they called Ghost, simply because she wanted him.
And Sofia got what she wanted. Only….not this time!
Because Luca wasn’t interested in her,at all,and once he saw Vivienne, she was the only one for him.
It was hard to stay away, and it was made harder by Vivienne herself.
Because he was the man for her,the only man she’d ever wanted in her 18 years on this earth.
But would the father that hated her give them a chance?
If it was up to her mother and her brother Dante,he would!
But then Luca took that chance away from her….which leaves you with a cliffhanger to Original Sin.

2 stars: Sonya Jesus’ Don’t Dare Breathe is the story about Hawk’s past and in that past there’s a girl called Isabelle that nearly died.
After that traumatic accident, she and her parents left town, but now she’s back.
Her parents died,and she’s all alone…
Hawk’s father is also dead and he has trouble coping with his loss.
And he has trouble coping with his mother’s new friend,Bruce.
He was his late father’s business partner, and Hawk doesn’t trust him,at all.
Knowing the man is in charge of Isabelle’s trustfund and inheritance gives Hawk a very bad feeling…..

2 stars: DS Wrights Tainting Innocence is Hawk’s story.
The man with the scars, who works for his uncle John.
Who is used to women looking horrified at his scarred face.
Until his latest job, taking one of the children of a lawyer standing in John’s way.
Val turns out to be the exception, and the temptation proves to be too much….for both. But Hawk knows it won’t last, because his uncle intends to use her in his sceme against her father.
He does manage to claim her,for the time being, but knows he’s lost her at the same time….
The alternative, however,is even worse, and he’ll do anything to keep her safe from his uncle and his men as long as possible.

2 stars: Indie Black and Sienna Cousins’ His Deadly Games gives you the first 5 chapters of Harlow and Presley’s story.
He’s drawn to this “ little mouse”,and has had his way with her once already.
Now they meet again at the start of the new school year.
And even though she has a boyfriend,Presley isn’t planning on keeping his hands to himself.
In the meantime, there’s a serial killer taking girls with blond hair, and it sounds like Harlow’s bestie,Nicole is one of them.
His latest victim is another girl they know,Britney.
Which leaves you hanging until Deadly Games releases in 2023….

2 stars: Lily Wildhart’s Rebel Heart is the story of Indi, who’s been dragged from New York to Echoes Cove by her parents.
She hates being uprooted, but luckily she quickly finds a friend in Scout.
Scout is happy to have a friend her brothers don’t chase off straight away, and it turns out they have the same taste in most things.
Sadly,it sounds like they’re going to be attending different schools after summer, though…but what’s stopping them from having a little fun until then, right?
As it turns out,her brothers might…especially the twins.
Ryker keeps glaring at her,Ellis keeps checking her out.
And she keeps bumping into them….not awkward at all, right?
Until she’s attacked by a drunk guy at a party they’re having, and they save her.
The night that follows is….spectacular.
Surely they’re not interested in more than that night,or are they?
The oldest brother,Diego,is happy to enlighten her about them….
Starting school with a broken heart amongst strangers that don’t want you there is not Indi’s idea of fun.
Which leaves you with yet another cliffhanger

Review for What Lies Between Us by H.D. Carlton
“Which makes you angrier, golden boy? The fact that you want to fuck your sister’s ex-boyfriend or that you want to fuck her murderer?”

The second that I saw H.D. Carlton is writing a dark MM romance, I was immediately salivating. But I was not at all prepared for the savage chokehold this story would have on me.

This is a novella and a bit of preview to what will be a full length novel for Link and Echo. But what I loved is how H.D. is able to give us a deliciously addictive hook and have it be equally satisfying while still making you salivate for more. She gave readers just enough to get them hooked on this story, but didn't drop your typical shock value cliffhanger and I could kiss her for it.

The set up for this story? OHMYGAWD! If I was more hooked I'd be hunting her ass down at her house and standing over her shoulder glaring menacingly until she finished the story and immediately gave it to her. What? The woman created Zade, I think she wouldn't mind this. But I digress.

Echo is whispered about through the halls of the Godric University. But it isn't for his sinful good looks or manwhore ways. He's the guy who brutally killed his ex girlfriend and got away with it. Or so everyone thinks, even though he was found innocent. He's used to the whispers, but they're no less hard. Especially when he's forced to deal with the violent hate from his ex's twin bother and ex best friend. Who he kinda, sorta also has the hots for. Talk about complicated.

But I'm making too light of what this story was. Because it was full of signature dark and creepy undercurrent that only HD can write so well. There's a dark mystery that runs parallel to the chemistry between Link and Echo of who truly killed Link's twin and getting Link to see the truth of what Echo is saying.

The novella was enough to immediately hook you and I do mean immediately. I loved a dark academia romance and this one ticked all the boxes. I'm seriously salivating for the full dose of this story because the whodunnit mystery just may kill me in the wait.

Review for WHAT LIES BETWEEN US by HD Carlton. Available in Heartless Heroes

UMMMM THIS WAS AMAZING! Per usual, HD gives us an unique story that leaves you always wanting more.

This is a gothic college romance following Link and Echo. Link's twin sister was murdered and he believes Echo did it. So what happens when he gives in to his desires of wanting Echo?

Will he fall for his sister's murderer??

This is a short story - m/m - enemies to lovers - HFN - psychological thriller - murder mystery romance. This does end abruptly with a happily for now, but HD will be making a full length novel for them!

5/5 stars AMAZING

Great short, steamy reads

Forbidden Secrets by AR Beck, 5 ⭐️, 4 🌶

Lux and Sebastian

A refreshing tale of bad boy meets rich girl, and he’s an ex-con from the wrong side of town, with low-level criminal dealings. Sebastian is lusciously gorgeous, poor, and obsessed with Lux (whom he stalks). Lux, unawares, is engaged to be wed to a not so nice guy to unite two elite businesses.

This book had it all: spice (4/5), drama, action, a villain and an antihero within a gritty storyline. He claimed her as his, despite their forbidden attraction in the face of socioeconomic status. Sebastian was the man who would do anything for his lady.

Even though this was a novella, it read complete. Great character dynamics, believable insta-attraction, and progressive pace, I would enjoy more of their story.

Tainted Innocence by DS Wrights, 4 ⭐️, 3.75 🌶

Val and Hayden / Hawk

Bad guys do bad things until they meant the right woman. This is a story about a disfigured antihero who is involved in the capture and ransom of a woman he has yet to discover he wants. Val is confident and good, uncaring of surface flaws while Hawk, so named, is self-conscious, living his life a little resentful within his criminal family. Then he meets Val, which puts everything into question. This is a spicy — because Val is attracted to Hayden and takes the reigns — scarred antihero/ captive heroine short that ends in a cliffhanger. Does Hayden attempt change and save Val going against his family? Though I was missing more connection between the two love interests, I still enjoyed the story. Steamy and a short, well-developed.

Damaged Hearts by Hallman and Beck, 3.5 🌶

Julia and Felix

For a short story, an amazing amount of angst and inner turmoil, exploration of personal and shared brokenness. With feelings of worthlessness and not measuring up, the couple had much in common, and the story depicted a lot of their emotions. I had difficulty, however, experiencing their attraction to each other, even so far as to visualize them. Very little was stated about Felix other than that he was a big guy to demonstrate his psychical appeal. Their sexual tension was more stated that felt, and actually wasn’t as believable under the circumstances of Julia’s very recent and harrowing trauma. She recovered unbelievably quickly and was unbelievably ardent about sexual contact considering what she endured. Understandably a short story, but I could not feel their connectedness other than their personal, respective brokenness.

I am curious about their story, particularly Felix’s dark, and in his mind, regretful past. This book ends on a bittersweet happy ending. The strength of this story is in the depth of emotions it portrays and the interest it draws the reader to want to know more. I would expect a longer novel and some back history would benefit these characters and the delivery of their romance.

Absolute perfection. I'm so excited and hooked into this world I cannot wait for more. Oh my gosh it was just so much more than anything I could have imagined and it was AMAZING.

Legit only 90 pages and so much fucking happened. It was like a whole ass movie in my head and was just the most fun, creepy, intriguing thing ever.

I'm already OBSESSED with Link & Echo, Minnie, and that professor 👀👀👀

AHHHH I can't wait for more!!

The poor decisions he made as a young man left Sebastian alone, with limited opportunities. As a petty criminal, slinging pot in NYC, he happened upon Lux and became immediately obsessed. Having set his sights on her, he’s determined to make her his despite the myriad of obstacles.

Engaged, albeit as part of a modern day arranged marriage between two powerful families, Lux is merely surviving. A late night altercation provides the wake-up she needs when Sebastian comes to her aid.

This bad boy meets rich girl is a spicy little bite that will leave you wanting more!

What Lies Between Us by HD Carlton

WOWZERS. I am making a new rule. more than 5 stars can be allowed for anthologies and to start it off I am giving this one 15. Echo and Link gave me chills. GOOSEBUMPS I TELL YOU. And that wasn't because of all the stuff that was going bump in the night. Which that was creepy too okay. I loved the murder mystery that was surrounding the whole dark romance feel of this novella. That is one thing I truly LOVE about this author. She makes you think while also unintentionally flooding your panties. I cannot stop thinking about their little naughty scene and it is making me want to pick the book back up and read MORE. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐STARS

UNSEEN BY BRYNN FORD

THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD OMG. I actually went into my kindle and seen I had the other novella that is in this world called Unheard and read it first and it was JUST AS WOWGOOD. Now I need another. and another. and another. The possessiveness on this man is just the kind I like in my meat sandwich. I LOVED how he saved Willa from a bad guy then basically stole her for himself. He said you are mine get over it. AND IT WAS HOT. Merrick even has the NAME of a man that can just grab you by the neck, look at you and give you the best orgasm of your life. I am telling you. Brynn Ford is one of those authors that are HIGHLY underrated and you need to watch out for her. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐stars

REBEL HEART BY LILY WILDHART

This story was REALLLLY GOOD AND I HOPE THERE IS A CONTINUATION!!!! I just looked this author up and it looks like there is a series called Tormented Royal that I believe may be kind of interconnected. Going to have to check this out. But Indi moves to a new town from NY and is starting a new prep school but before starting she meets and befriends a new girl and her twin brothers and their best friend. These guys are aggressive, broody (ok Ryker is broody but Ellis and Dylan are nice and fun.) Ryker and Ellis are twins and they end up getting along greatttttt with Indi in the end if you know what I am saying BUT some stuff happens.....UGH I dont wanna say much because you just need to read it. It is of course high school drama but hot high school type of drama and it ended on a REALLLLY GOOD CLIFFY. BUYING THIS AUTHORS OTHER BOOKS! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐STARS

WHERE MORALS DIE BY SUKI WILLIAMS

Now I remember why I obsessed over Suki Williams when I read their first book Beauty of Corruption. It was so good and like this one, UNFORGETTABLE. I actually stopped reading this and went to audible and bought the audio of Hard Limits because now I need MORE of this authors' words right when I finish. I LOVED these men!!! Grigoriy was soooo domineering and ruthless! And I loved how fiery Rheva was and how it was like of course as her luck would have it she would fall into the lap of her sisters boyfriends crime mafia BOSS. Illya? HELLO I NEED HIS BOOK!!!! He seems playful, deadly and mine mine mine. Vadim was so mysterious and sexy and I bet he is a beast in the sack. LOVED THIS SO MUCH!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐STARS

HIS DEADLY GAMES BY INDIE BLACK AND SIENNA COUSINS

OKAYYY!!! I LIKED, NO, LOVEDDDD THAT LITTLE PREVIEW AND I NEED MORE!!!! Presley sounds JUST like the kind of guy I LOVE reading. He was crazy, acted first and thought later and was obsessive over Harlow his little mouse. The hints of the dubcon/noncon were just enough to get me through until the full book comes out. It was perfectly dark with the ideal amount of thrillerish things inside. I really cannot wait to see what the killer does, who he is etc... I NEED MORE AND I AM SO INTRIGUED I NEED TO BUY THESE TWO AUTHORS BOOKS. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐STARS

BURN FOR US BY ASHLEY GEE

What a great first book for me to read by Ashley Gee! I loved Sofia and Leo's banter, especially when they were role playing. She was such a spitfire and I loved that he was broody and had a take charge attitude. When the story first started I had NO idea it was going to go in the fake marriage direction and on top of that I didnt know it was going to get as kinky with the belts as it did but I WAS HERE FOR IT! The mom and Mack made me soooooo mad and I was totally hoping the mom was in prison or something at the end but hey, we all deserve second chances I guess right? (no, lets kill her...LOL) GREAT STORY! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐STARS

DAMAGED HEARTS BY JL BECK AND C HALLMAN

This book had one thing I love....KIDNAPPING. ALSO I LOVE ME SOME NONCON, except this noncon wasnt the type where the girl ends up liking it later. I still love this type of dark dark books! Julie was about to be sold into an auction, she was a virgin so she was used and abused by tons of men until she was saved by this couple then the couple dumped her with their friend. Their friend was Felix and he was such a dang gentleman! Until Julie coaxed him into making her feel like a woman! The only thing I can say that I didnt love was when he took her virginity she said there wasnt any pain and she came multiple times. I would expect in a dark romance for it to atleast not be super perfect and atleast real but other than that I liked it a lot. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐stars

STORY:
What I Like:
My review is for Damaged Hearts. I found myself falling for Felix. Throughout the story, I live the way he cared for Julie.

What Is So So:
I did not read Violent Beginnings, so I am clueless about Fallon and Markus’ story as they were brief characters in Damaged Hearts. I assume a little of their story is linked to the beginning of Julie’s story. Julie’s POV in the beginning was gut wrenching and very graphic. For a short story, it was too much to digest in a short read, because I felt as though she was the one who pushed consistently for sexual contact with Felix and that was odd considering her trauma. I felt as though the story started in the middle as I have no backstory on either character. I don’t even know what or who Felix is hiding from. I felt a bit lost with this one. The good thing is the author will make this a full length book so this should get better for me.

SEXUAL CHEMISTRY:
Between Felix and Julie, I thought it was sweet.

SECONDARY CHARACTERS:
There is no one there that stood out. Markus and Fallon was briefly included.

OVERALL:
Was I entertained? No really
Did I like the story? Yes and No
If a series, would I read/continue with the other books in the series,? Not sure.

TRIGGERS: violence, graphic rape scene

NOTES: No ow/om drama

****I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the books you read. I know we all have different opinions and preferences with what we read. I based my book reviews on my preferences and what I like, and while these preferences may not be the same for others, I hope this review was still helpful.

What Lies Between Us - H.D Carlton
3 ⭐️

- M/M
- Academy/university
- novella, but preview to a full length novel
- Dark and suspenseful

Echo has been accused of murdering Link’s sister who was also his ex girlfriend. No matter how many times he says he didn’t kill her, the whole school still pins after him. Deep down, Echo and Link always had this connection to one another. This connection explodes in this novella.

Anything H.D Carlton writes, I will read. She’s so good at creating dark suspense. I’m not super into MM, but I enjoyed the dark atmosphere of Godric. This Aacademy is like a castle. The hallways are dark and what seems like a dead end is never really a dead end. This novella ends with a little bit of a cliffhanger. I’m definitely intrigued to see how their story continues. There’s definitely more to their connection and WAY more to what’s going on inside these walls.

** I received a copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

I would love to get around to reading more of the stories in here, I just haven’t gotten the opportunity. As soon as I read the other books my review will be updated.

5 Star Review for What Lies Between Us by H.D. Carlton

Link and Echo, what can I say... Their relationship is one with history. They have been friends for years, but when one is dating the sister of the other and she ends up dead, things get incredibly dysfunctional. Threats and accusation are thrown around. And there is still this crazy magnetism and tension between the men.

Throw in an eclectic best friend, the beginnings of a murder mystery, a huge university where parents send their messed up adult kids and ghosts... Not to mention spice! What more could you ask for?!

WLBU is a novella for this antho, but Hailey has stated publicly that it will be turned into a full length novel in a character series starting next year. I really loved the back and forth between Link and Echo, the setting was top notch and the writing, of course, was phenomenal. But it's Hailey, so that's to be expected.

Being that the story is going to be continued at full length there is a cliffhanger, but it's not big at all. Just enough to sink it's hook in and make you excited for whats to come!

I read the short story by HD Carlton in this anthology called What Lies Between Us.

My very first MM romance and it did not disappoint.

With a mystery to solve, MM spice, and tension, this short story was absolutely thrilling. 😈 I really loved Echo and Link, their personalities, and the story they formed. Plus they were hot as hell together. 🥵

I can’t wait to see where this story goes in the future, and it was everything.

Echo and Link and Minnie and Godric and and and....

What an incredible start to What Lies Between Us.

The only thing I will say is I need more Echo and Link ASAP!!

Murder mystery? Check.
Friends to enemies to lovers? Check.
Sassy best friend? Check.
Creepy ass school? Double check.

The mystery weaved into a tail of grief, love and friendship and the loss of those things as well is utterly astounding. I had so much fun in this story (as well as a TON of emotion) and cannot wait to be back with these characters and this world.

Oh my god!! The setting is a spooky ass academy that’s open for rich troubled kids.

We have Echo who was accused and acquitted of his ex-girlfriends murder but everyone at school still thinks he did it. Especially her brother, Link Mason.

The story was so good and juicy. There are things in the walls of this Academy. It’s eery, it’s spooky, and appears to be haunted. By the living or dead? I’m not sure.

What we do have is Echo who knows the real murderer is still out there at this school. And he’s determined to clear his name.

This is an MM story. It gets spicy. 🔥

“Give me what I want, and I will make you come so hard you go blind. I will lick and suck every fucking inch of you, golden boy, until I’ve milked every last drop and you’re begging me to stop.”

HD Carlton left this novella with me melting for more. It’s so good. I love a good mystery!

I read HD Carlton’s story in this anthology, What Lies Between us, and absolutely loved it!

It’s an MM novella that follows Link and Echo. It’s a friends to enemies to lovers dark romance with a murder mystery thrown in and all of the spookies.

Even after being acquitted, everyone at the school still thinks Echo murdered his girlfriend; Links twin sister.
It’s set in a spooky college where rich parents ship their troublesome kids. There are hidden passages and unfriendly ghosts around every corner and I am so stoked to learn more about the school.

We are getting a full length novel for these two, but this short story still gives you angst, some super hot spice, and the perfect amount of mystery to keep you on the hook. And we do get a HFN.

Definitely recommend, especially for spooky season.

What Lies Between Us by HD Carlton

Of 2 things Lucas thought he was sure of
1. Echo murdered his sister.
2. Echo should have never been his sister's.

Echo and Luca are literally everything I could have ever wanted. The angst the desire the cockiness!!!

I love Echos determined but broken spirit. He's a spitfire and I'm obsessed with him. He accused of murder and while he's acquitted in court his school mates aren't so sure. Through every failed social excursion Echo keeps going.

Luca life is flipped upside down when his twin is taken from him. Supposedly by his best friend. And even though he Murdered his sister there's some traitorous part of him that desires echo. His hate for him is fueled even more by this

I can not wait to read the full length

What Lies between us By HD Carlton

I absolutely adore this author! I have been following her work ever since she wrote her first book and it's like a miracle how she just keeps getting better and better. There is honestly no limit.

This anthology is another amazing read by these authors and Carlton has contributed a lot to it. I loved her part so much! It was not a full length story by her this time since this is a multi author collaboration story but still enough to amaze me and get me hooked!

Definitely recommending this book to all the dark romance loving people out there!

HD Carlton can do no wrong 👏 I swear everything this woman writes is just amazing. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐔𝐬 is short novella published as a part of Heartless Heroes Anthology. It will be turned into full length novel later, thanks God (or Zade?!😅) for that. Link and Echo were addictive and I need more of them asap.

𝑬𝒄𝒉𝒐 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒎𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒆𝒍𝒔𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒆, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒇𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔 𝒐𝒏 𝒎𝒚 𝒉𝒂𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒉𝒊𝒎.

Story begins after one of our heroes, Echo de Luca, is accused of cold-hearted murder of his ex-girlfriend. Despite the fact that he was pledged innocent, whole Godric University still consider him murderer and hates him - including victim's twin brother and his former best friend, Link. But this unresolved murder is not the only unresolved thing between them. The tension and chemistry, y'all... 🔥

Dark academia, murder mystery, enemies to lovers, MM novella with immaculate spice. Story set in haunting, creepy university for unruly children of wealthy people. Filled with spooky vibes, ghots, dark tunnels and combs. Do I really need to say more!? This is perfect read for spooky season. It's short but just long enough to got you hooked and dying for full length novel. If dark romance is your thing, you can't miss this.

Alright, finally read through all of these that I’m going to read. Nothing personal against the ones I skipped. Could have just been my mood at the time. My two favorite standouts here are What Lies Between Us and Collide. These two were really, really good and I reread both of those multiple times. I’d also give an honorable mention to Rebel Hearts. A good compilation overall though a bit inconsistent. I love that this benefitted a good cause and how fun it was to read all these excellent writers contributing to an anthology with such a naughty theme.

1. Damaged Hearts ⭐️⭐️-easily forgettable
2. Carnage Heart ⭐️⭐️- unfinished and I’m not buying it, none of it
3. Don’t Dare Breathe⭐️-ugh I hated this one. Not a complete story at all, a teaser for an upcoming novel. Depressing, no romance or sex and nothing gets resolved. Oh yeah and tons of typos and poor editing. Kept using the word “passed” instead of “past”. One of my least favorite typos, haha. Overall-Boooooooooooo!
4. What Lies Between Us⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: fucking great, deserves all the praise it gets. Great combo of hot, spooky and forbidden. I’ll read the novel for sure
5. Mortal Beasts ⭐️⭐️⭐️: this one was well written compared to some of the earlier stories in the compilation. Romance and sex scenes felt kinda rushed and inauthentic, but at least it strived to be a complete story!
6. Tainting Innocence ⭐️⭐️⭐️: 3.5 good and kept me hooked but ended super abruptly
7. Cardinal Sin: DNF at 80%. Story was still dragging so so much. Impatient and bored. 80% in and they still haven’t kissed! Just a lot of thoughts about how the mafia sucks and way too extended prologue/focus on his upbringing in the church.
8. Rebel Heart ⭐️⭐️⭐️: 3.4 excellent on the steamy MMF smuttiness. My biggest criticism is that the ending introduced elements totally unrelated to anything that came before. Maybe this has ambitions to be a longer story and didn’t want to wrap up the main conflict…?
9. Collide ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: bumping this up to a 4 because it’s been speaking to me these past two days…great on the atmospheric vibes and this story definitely matches the theme of the book. There is a part in this book where suddenly everything flips onto its head and everything after that feels like a surreal fever dream. Good if you’re reading to escape but will some readers will be turned off by how dark it really is. Hot and evil…ready to seduce you with its depths of depravity…
10. Forbidden Secrets ⭐️⭐️: 1.75 weak heroine, lots of parts of this were unbelievable in how the characters would act and how they forego common sense. Ending is unsatisfying and the story as a whole was depressing.
11. Unseen ⭐️: DNF no matter how I look at it, sex trafficking and owning people just isn’t hot. Plus drug dealers are gross
12. His Deadly Games- skipping this one since it’s half of a full novel. I don’t want to read half of the first half of a duet that ends in a cliffhanger. Sounds like a bait click sample, not a short story which is what I thought this book was supposed to be. The format is all part of the writing challenge.
13. The Wicked and The Damned ⭐️⭐️: just a little unbelievable and bad dialogue. Her reactions were not those of a virgin and the fact that the business their families were in were media companies were some of the issues I had with this. They also fell too quickly which ruined it for me.
14. Dark Morals-skipped for now
15. Burn for Us ⭐️⭐️⭐️: good story wise and heat wise. A couple plot holes-like
*spoiler alert*
why wouldn’t he be tempted to just kill her while they were married and get all her moolah? Isn’t that dumb for her to leave herself vulnerable like that?
But the main thing that drove me crazy was the lack of editing. Typos on almost every page, sometimes multiple and most easily caught with a basic spelling and grammar Microsoft Word check.
16. Depraved ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: huh, this was very interesting and kept me reading, though it wasn’t in line with the theme of the compilation in quite the way expected. Trigger warnings that it deals with heavy heavy grief themes. Could have been spicier but I respected the story for what it was and it stayed true throughout instead of trying to be something that it wasn’t.
17. Desire in Deception ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: this one was entertaining and sexy but also so naughty and wrong. What can I say for myself? I shamefully enjoyed it.

WHAT LIES BETWEEN US by H.D. Carlton
STEAM LEVEL: 🔥🔥🔥

This little MM novella can be found in the HEARTLESS HEROES ANTHO!!! The playlist for this story is *chef’s kiss,* absolutely perfect. What Lies Between Us is an incredibly sexy, enemies-to-lovers romance between a man wrongly accused and a man accusing. My heart ached for Echo and everything he went through but by the end, Link had claimed my heart as well and I can’t wait for more!!!!!

🗣 𝙻𝚒𝚗𝚔 𝙼𝚊𝚜𝚘𝚗’𝚜 𝚊𝚗𝚐𝚎𝚛 𝚒𝚜 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚘𝚗𝚕𝚢 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚖𝚊𝚔𝚎𝚜 𝚖𝚎 𝚏𝚎𝚎𝚕 𝚊𝚕𝚒𝚟𝚎 𝚊𝚗𝚢𝚖𝚘𝚛𝚎. 🗣

I blame my pregnancy hormones but I cried so hard for Echo. He was angry and hurt and so lonely. He even tried to push away his only friend, Minnie, to save her from the toxicity of their peers. His heart was so pure but broken.

Link had his own troubles. I believed he was so confused over his feelings for Echo, he believed everything negative about him he could to push those feelings away. But gah, when they came together, the chemistry exploded. Good golly these two were HOT AF.

I’m excited to read more of these two and more stories from this anthology. I devoured every word and I have a feeling this set of novellas is going to be amazing!

Review for What Lies Between Us by H.D. Carlton

This was an intense romance between a man who’s twin sister was murdered and her ex-boyfriend that he’s convinced murdered her. Finding out they both go to the same college puts them in close proximity and it’s impossible for them to resist the pull they have towards each other. Especially when they both have harbored feelings for each other for longer than they want to admit. The love is forbidden and the hate is intense but the passion can’t be restrained because the attraction between these two is undeniable.

The setting is beautifully atmospheric (this is not your standard college setting) and the murder mystery kept the stakes and my emotional investment high!

I love HD Carlton’s work and this spicy MM enemies to lovers with a murder mystery was no exception. This story is pulsing with tension and intense emotions. It’s short, steamy, and completely satisfying!

* I received an early copy of the anthology from the publisher. Review is my own!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for The Desire in Deception by M.L Philpitt.

This book sucked me right from the start. Enzo is an new capo on a mission to right what was wrong the time he was just a boy also to avenge his father. Caterina is the daughter to head mafia family who was raised to be nothing more really then a pawn that is really until Enzo. These two come together hard and fast but in a beautiful way loved every bit of the book

Heartless Heroes is a dark romance anthology that contains 20 dark and twisted stories from various authors.

THE DESIRE IN DECEPTION BY M.L. PHILPITT
This is the prequel to the authors upcoming mafia series and I enjoyed it. It was action packed and steamy and had me hooked from beginning to end. This is Enzo and Catalina's story and these two had such undeniable chemistry. This is a story of revenge and recovering what was stolen. It gives us arranged marriage, kidnapping, forced captive and a ruthless antihero. I enjoyed it and cant wait for the new series from this author.

Damaged Hearts by J. Beck and C. Hallman
This short impactful story broke my heart and shattered my soul.
Julie is collateral damage due to her father’s indulgences.
They damaged her and torn her.
But they couldn’t break her mind.
Felix is not a good man. He’s done some terrible things.
But with Julie he discovers another side to himself.
He treats her like fine delicate china.
So caring and conscious of his every action.
Letting Julie slowly heal and trust.
Their road is paved in heartache and pain, healing and discovery.
Can their feelings for one another be enough to take the chance on a future together with evil men after them?
I loved both these two incredible characters.
And I’m so happy they are getting a full length novel 👏🏻❤️
