Desert Homesteaders #3

Settle for Something

Rate this book
Carjacked and taken hostage? Just another Friday night for this alpha.

Sweet, bumbling Shane is an alpha who’s been looking for love in all the wrong places. Bad dates and catfishing incidents are the norm in his world. But Shane pushes on because he knows his fated mate is waiting to be found. And if he doesn’t eventually find his perfect match? Well… Shane might be willing to settle.

Xavier’s on the run from a rough past. Luckily, he’s a jackrabbit shifter who’s good at getting lost. Not so lucky? He’s also pregnant and needs a safe place to burrow. He sees his chance in a small Arizona town—by carjacking his own fated mate and taking him hostage. Kinda. Is it really kidnapping if the hostage offers to be taken?

Return to the hills above Cottonwood, Arizona where every shifter has a bit of special magic and the pack of homesteaders, preppers, and loners are a lot nosier about each other’s lives than they’d care to admit. Because no matter their differences—pack means family.

This 28k novella is the third in this short-read series and definitely contains mpreg. Be prepared for side-splitting laughs, an omega who can talk to animals, and a group of people who know that family always comes first. Also, all the feels you’d expect from a Susi Hawke original. See expanded blurb inside book for possible triggers.

I'm a total fan of M/PREG Paranormal Romances, first and foremost as a reader. I'm excited to share my own omegaverse(s) with you. What's not to love about adorable Omegas and the Alpha men who love them? If I'm not writing about men sporting baby bumps, I'm definitely reading about them!

I'm a native of Las Vegas, NV, so I'm pre-wired to love everything weird ~ although I don't find any kind of love to be weird. I'm a cis woman who's been happily married to the same lovable lug for 18 years. We have a 16yr old son, well, at least I think we do? Either that, or we have a ghost that eats all our food and uses up all wifi playing xbox while screaming into a headset.

As a new author, it's been amazing to find the amount of support that I've been given from readers and my fellow authors. Feel free to message me, I love to chat with fellow readers. Am I a reader? Heck yeah! In fact, I'm never certain that I can completely trust an author who isn't a fellow bibliophile.

I will try to update here when I'm doing promotional parties & chats. I usually do those on Facebook. If you haven't already signed up for my newsletter, you should totally do it! I only send out NL's to announce new releases or important announcements. I also like to note in my NL what I'm currently reading along with a cover shot and the link for anyone who is interested.

Filled with clever banter, a delightful romance, and Susi Hawke's dependably creative shifter universe, Settle for Something is one thoroughly enjoyable audiobook. This is the third book in Hawke's Desert Homesteaders standalone series.

Michael Dean, delivers a fantastic performance. He creates a uniqe voice for each of this vast variety of characters, infuses the witty scenes with his trademark humor, and outdoes himself with the racy erotica. Winner!

Sweet story and what a hoot

Such a sweet story and so funny. Susi predicted readers would laugh out loud and, oh my, yes. I love these Homesteader stories. And this one ends with a nice set up for the next one.

I utterly adore everything Susi Hawke writes and this book is no different! All of Susi’s books are full of sweetness, humor, heat and love!! This is the third book in the Desert Homesteaders series and I have loved this series so very much. This book follows Shane, Silas’s bother. While Silas is off on his honeymoon Shane is left alone with no one to keep him out of trouble, which he ALWAYS get into. Shane is a sweet alpha bear shifter and he meets his fated omega rabbit shifter, Xavier. Xavier is pregnant and on the run. When he carjacks Shane they are unaware they are fated mates. Ultimately they spark up a friendship, even after the carjacking, and they realize they are fated mates. This was a sweet sweet story about fated mates and was of course full of humor and heat. And the audio for this book was truly amazing! I love everything Michael Dean narrates and he did a truly incredible job with this one!

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

Rough past, happy future (an audio review)

Xavier has had a rough start in life. Then he undergoes a horrific event that drives the jackrabbit shifter to run – for his life – and to protect his unborn babies. He needs a safe place to land. Shane is that safe place. Shane’s got a good life as a homesteader. Except he can’t seem to find a mate. His Grindr hookups are going nowhere, and he’s about to have another disastrous date when he’s hijacked by the man he scents to be his fated mate. The guy is adorable, and a terrible kidnapper, so Shane plays along. He’s curious where they are going to wind up.

I empathized with Xavier’s panic and I empathized with Shane’s loneliness. That they found each other was great. The they overcame their obvious differences was lovely. Now, this is the third book in the series and I haven’t read the other two, but I wasn’t lost. In fact, I was, like Xavier, found. Finally, I loved how Xavier handled Shane’s animal problem. That part of the story was a hoot.

I adore Michael Dean’s narration of the story and think he did a great job. I may just have to go back and listen to the previous two stories.

Fun and hot and sweet as Susi Hawke's books tend to be, Settle for Something is a great addition to the series.

Shane was a bumbling alpha bear shifter and Xavier was a pregnant omega jackrabbit shifter. Xavier knew Shane was his fated mate as soon as they met but didn't know if he could trust him after what he'd gone through, and Shane's nose had deceived him many times before, so he wasn't sure if Xavier was his mate. Despite how they met (with Xavier carjacking Shane, LOL), Shane was sweet and protective of Xavier and they were adorable together.

Michael Dean's performance was awesome! He has great comedic timing and he totally brought all these characters to life.

Very recommendable!

This book reminded me why I don't read this author anymore: the "humor" is absolutely horrible. If you are in kindergarten you might find it funny, I guess.

I feel like this wasn’t the fun, light hearted story it should have been. As soon as I read how Xavier became pregnant, it ruined the fun for me.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With a quick glance at Shane, my big sweet lug, watching me through tear-filled eyes, I realized I felt safe enough. "Before our Cleveland show, I went into heat. Usually, I checked into a hotel and lay low until it passed. Not that time. My father was excited about the new ballet act I'd put together with three potbellied pigs he'd picked up last summer. He said the show must go on. So I stayed, then passed out backstage after the show."
"Then what happened?" Shane's eyes were squeezed shut, as if he knew the answer to his question would bring him pain on my behalf.
As much as I hated to finish, I had to. "When I woke up, a couple of days had passed. And a heat-induced orgy I never would've consented to. The acrobats are evil incarnate. The five monkey brothers were always catcalling and trying to grab my ass every time I passed them. No matter how many times I complained to my dad, he never did anything. When I went to him after I escaped, my father told me it was my fault for tempting them with my heat pheromones. Apparently, the scraggly alpha bastards can't help responding."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Honestly I feel like this bothers me than it did any of the character in the book.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"The fuck?" Shane's eyes popped open, canine teeth elongating while thick, furry hair sprouted out of his skin. "Your father blamed the victim instead of breaking their necks? Please tell me I can kill them. Fuck being afraid of monkeys. I want to murder those weaselly little shits with my bare hands. Or bear hands. And claws." He held up a hand, allowing four-inch-long razors to emerge from his fingertips.
When my hare insisted we flee, I took a deep breath and reminded both of us I didn't need to be afraid of this man. Bear or not, this was Shane—not a predator. Putting a hand on his chest, I massaged that solid wall of muscle while shaking my head. "Not worth it, big guy. Besides, what if it was my fault? My father said monkeys are horny fuckers anyway. An omega's heat was too strong a draw. Maybe I did give consent and don't remember if I was desperate enough at the time."
Niles suddenly stood beside Larry, shaking his head. "No, Xavier, there's no excuse for what they did. Permission you don't remember giving isn't consent."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And then we move on. Nothing really to be mentioned again. Xavier seems to be fine with the horrible circumstances that lead to his pregnancy and Shane will love them no matter what.

Maybe it’s just me, but this just didn’t end up being the lighthearted, silly story I was hoping to read.

Settle for Something
Desert Homesteaders, Book 3
By: Susi Hawke
Narrated by: Michael Dean

This series keeps getting better and better and I am loving this fascinating world Susi Hawke created and the equally fascinating characters, who you can not help but to fall in love with. Xavier, a jack rabbit shifter, is on the run from his past, pregnant and needing to find a safe place to burrow, but first he must find food. He comes up with a plan after overhearing a conversation, the plan is to get his food and car jack the guy who is meeting his date at the restaurant, a date that is a loser. Except he is a crappy car jacker, luckily the person he car jacks has an enormous heart and hears him out. Shane, a bear shifter, has not had the best of luck in the dating department, but after hearing out Xavier’s predicament, he offers him a place to stay. He wound up getting a lot more than he ever imagined. Xavier has an ability that not only astonished him but would make his life so much easier on his farm. Trouble arises when Xavier’s past catches up to him and wants to take him, but Shane will not let that happen and neither will the other homesteaders with Dottie and crew coming to the rescue. There is an impressive amount of story in this novella sized book, a fabulously delightful story that is cleverly plotted with the perfect balance of drama, humor and witty dialogue, heartfelt emotions and romance that was destined. Susi Hawke, thank you for another enjoyable, feel-good story, I love how much heart you put into your work, also loved how it made me smile.

🎧📚🎧 And for the fabulous narration, Michael Dean is a talented narrator and a versatile voice artist. He had a complete understanding of the characters he portrayed, gave each a voice that fit the character’s persona, sounding believable in each role he played and just as I pictured the characters to sound. He nailed it with the character voices and that scene in the barn was perfection. He set the perfect tone for the story, handled the witty dialogue and with ease and landed the humor effortlessly. You could hear how much heart he put into his performance as he captures all the characters’ emotions and projects them into his performance. Michael Dean is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this fabulous listen.

Independent reviewer for Gay Romance Reviews, I was gifted my copy of the audio version this book.

This is book 3 in the Desert Homesteaders series, and I have not read/listened to the others. I think I might have enjoyed this one MORE, if I had. That's not to say I didn't enjoy this one, but it would have given me the bigger picture about this group of people, is all!

Shane gets carjacked by a pregnant jackrabbit, but Shane doesn't mind. The little cutie smells delicious but he can't let himself trust his nose: he's been wrong before and it cost him. But Xavie is so sweet and helps with his animals! When Xavie's past catches up to him, Shane steps up, bear and all.

I liked this, a lot. Its short, couple hours listening time, 100 odd pages to read. Its sweet and smexy, its too stinking cute and so warm and fuzzies! And full of laugh out loud moments! I don't usually react verbally when I'm reading but I totally do when listening and this had me howling!

Michael Dean narrates.

Now, I CANNOT fault the narration, at all, but I do need to make this point, cos ya'll know I'm all about the book feelings and I feel I need to get this point across!

Do not, I repeat do NOT listen to this book immediately after listening to another Dean narration, one that is so very much darker than this one! I kept waiting for it all to go to hell and back, I really did! Here endeth your public announcement!

Dean nails the voices of all the characters, and the animals! Oh the animals! *I'm chuckling writing this up thinking about them! But he also gets across Xavie's need to burrow, and Shane's need to love, he really does.

All in all, a good solid 4 star listen.

This was my favorite out of all the books so far in the Desert Homesteaders series. This story involves Silas's best friend, Shane a Bear desperately searching for love in all the wrong places. With Silas on his honeymoon no one was there to help keep Shane out of the inevitable trouble he always found himself in. But this time Fate intervened and saved the cute naive young Bear from once again being robbed and having his heart broken. He was still so sweet and innocent despite all the cat fishing, ghosting, and thieving he'd been subjected to.

This time it took a pregnant carjacker to turn his world upside down and not even give him the desire to seek out "love" on those hookup sites. His fated Omega Rabbit 🐰was on the lam. Running from his closely guarded secret past and he also kept his online job under wraps. Just as well though because Shane was not known for keeping secrets. But his sweet, gentle, concerned, and protective Bear personality kept him in the running to find the mate he'd always dreamed about.

5 stars for both the story and the narration. I wish I could rate it higher.

This was my first "Susi" book. Even though it's book 3 in the series it can be read as a standalone. I don't like fantasy books but I gave this a chance because "Susan Hawke" is a one click for me and I have all her regular books. I'm so glad I did. This was both sweet and friggin hilarious.

It was a very quick listen and once I started, I couldn't stop. It was low angst (no relationship angst) and low heat. The characters were fantastic. The 2 MCs had great chemistry The side characters were wonderful too, even the animal "characters". I was rolling in laughter. I am absolutely going to go back and get the previous books. "Susi" just might have converted me to the fantasy world.

Michael Dean outdid himself with all these voices. He for sure brought the story to life. He absolutely expressed all of the emotions wonderfully and had me laughing so hard. He was already my favorite narrator with his sexy ready voice but this performance was pure gold. It was such a pleasure to listen to this. I bookmarked that meeting the animals scene for whenever I need to laugh.

What I Thought About The Book - What an amazing book, such wonderful characters and plots. This whole series was new to me as was this author and I can officially say I am now hooked on both the series and this author. I loved everything about this book. Shane is such a big softie, I just wanted to wrap him up and keep him safe, I loved how he didn't fall into that typical big bad alpha stereotype, he just wanted to find love so much. Xavier is exactly who Shane needs, he'll be there to protect Shane and stand up for him but also Shane can give Xavier the safe place he needs and also be the father his babies need. This book was so well written and the audiobook was amazing to listen to, the narrator was brilliant, he did the voices brilliantly. I really enjoyed this book.

Would I Read Again/Continue The Series - Yes/Yes

**Audible ARC Review**

I'm so late for the party...I just started this series with this audio and I was blown away on how much I enjoyed it. Xavier and BooBoo...oops I mean Shane were the best. Their meeting was hilarious...their friendship was so sweet...knowing they were mates, I like how they started out as friends and feelings grew...made their connection have more meaning. The author has a way of having likable characters you just wanna immerse yourself with. Picking the right narrator helps. Michael Dean's performance was excellent. His voiced each character like a BOSS. That hilarious scene with the farm animals had me completely in stitches...OMG I laughed so hard with that rooster...Just thinking about the homestead family got me wanting to listen to first two books STAT!! This story is why I love Susi's books. I highly recommend readers listen if you want to be highly entertained...5STARS!!!

I actually listened to this on Audible. It was awesome!

Shane wants a mate. He’s had so many bad dates and relationships that he is almost ready to give up. Giving it one more try, he’s meeting a guy at a restaurant only to be carjacked by Xavier, an omega rabbit shifter. Xavier is pregnant and running away from his dad who only wants him to run the circus his dad owns.

After Shane hears about what happened to Xavier he opens his home and his heart to the little shifter rabbit. This was a really sweet story and after listening to it and hearing the friends Shane has I have to go back a head the first two books. I really enjoyed the narrator and giggled out loud and had a smile that I’m sure confused people who were shopping around me as I listened to the book. 5 stars all around!

I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I enjoyed this book. I thought Xavi and Shane were too cute for words. When Xavi was talking to Shane’s animals by using his gift to try and work out why they hate Shane and what they had to say was pretty funny but man was Henry the gay rooster a bit of an a*se. Xavi’s father is a horrible person and I’m glad Shane gave him a reminder not to come after Xavi and their babies again. I notice that a few times it was stated that Niles, Kyle and Larry were an Alpha Triad but I’m pretty sure Larry’s an Omega as he gave birth during this book apart from that I didn’t notice any other discrepancies or errors. I just wish that this book would’ve been a bit longer. I’d definitely recommend this book, series and author to everyone.

Carjacking and hares

Awww! This was such a sweet story. Xavier, a jackrabbit shifter, is pregnant and on the run. When he carjacks Shane, our resident bear shifter, Shane is unaware that they are fated mates. Friendship turns to love but it's the teamwork of all our old characters that save the day when the circus comes looking for Xavier. I loved how sweet Shane was and how sassy Xavi was. They made the perfect pair and I'm so happy Shane got his HEA. As always, I loved the inclusion of all our usual friends and can't wait to see what shenanigans are in store next. This entire series are quick, fun reads and so worth taking a chance on.

Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5

I loved it; short and sweet.

This is book three in the series but I haven’t read book two (and it’s been a while since I read book one). I didn’t feel like I was missing anything so I think you can just jump in and listen to this one on its own if you want to.

I’ve just re-read the blurb and there isn’t anything that I can add about the story except to say how much I loved it. Michael Dean is one of my favorite audiobook performers and I loved what he did with this story.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

For the most part this is a sweet low angst quick read. It cracked me up when Xavier carjacks/kidnaps Shane. How Xavier became pregnant was horrible & his father was a nasty POS. Kind sweet Shane, who has had horrible luck finding love & has always gotten the short end of the stick really steps up to Xavier's father. I would have liked the book to have been longer. I'm glad that Shane finally realized that Xavi was his mate & got their HEA. I loved Henry the gay rooster & all the other animals on Shane's homestead.

This series is seriously funny. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, some serious ones, and quite a few that were too sweet for words. Shane made me shake my head repeatedly. The boy needed someone to watch over him. He comes across as very naive. Xavier, on the other hand, has had the worst of life and it's made him smart and wary. These two have a hard time coming together with their pasts making them reluctant to acknowledge their bond. The gang is there to help them in their time of need, as always.
I'm excited to see the next book.
Highly recommended author and series

This book was simply delightful as were all of the characters. I loved Xavier and Shane and their wonderful friends to mates relationship. It was so unique to see Xavi talking to the animals and Shane's fear of clowns and monkeys was also cute. I appreciated the humor and the banter between the main characters (and supporting characters). This series is so much fun and I'm hoping that there will be so much more.

OMG - don’t try to read this on the sly, like at work. You’ll be caught when you start laughing like crazy! This is a fantastic story and Shane is just too adorable. This is a wonderful addition to the series and probably my favorite. You will be truly entertained, when you read this book. Shane, Xavi, and the other characters we’ve grown to love are here for our enjoyment. Susi outdid herself with the humor this time. I don’t want to ruin the offbeat surprises, read it!

Clowns and Monkeys

Shane had a habit of dating the wrong man. On his way to meet with another loser, he gets car-jacked, by a pregnant Xavier. Xavier on the run from his father and his circus, was needing someplace to hide. He smells Shane and he knows he is his mate, however Shane's allergies has his nose on the out. I loved their story. The chickens, rooster and pig had me rolling.

If Dr. Doolittle was a carjacker!

Really enjoyed this addition to the series. Poor Shane, unlucky in love until he meets Xavier.
Xavier, a jackrabbit shifter, is on the run. His and Shane's meeting is really funny! They start as roommates, even though they're mates, dance around their attraction get their HEA.
Lovely to see Dottie, Sandy and the other homesteaders.
The audio is also really good, worth it for the Dr. Doolittle scene and for revisiting Dottie and Sandy!

Oh my, this one truly was my favorite of the homesteaders series. Shane is always just so freaking cute. And our little hare switched into a more protective role when it came to his bear. This one was cute and funny all wrapped up with a nice big bow. I'd definitely recommend giving it a read. If you're anything like me you'd love it!

I love Shane

There's something about a big teddy bear of a guy, and they don't get more sweet and clueless than Shane. He needed someone a bit worldly to take care of him. Xavier is, and doesn't get frustrated by the cluelessness.

There's a bit of a bother with Xavier's family to keep things interesting, but I would love to know what's in the third bedroom!

A sweet ending

This is a paranormal shifter romance with mpreg, the third book in a series and needs to be read in order! I liked this book, especially these mates meet cute! I was annoyed by the two older persons again but it wasn’t nearly as bad as book two and it didn’t pull too much away from the story this time. I love Shane’s big bear heart!

Simplistic

While the overall storyline is only positive, the plot, what little there is, is decidedly juvenile and mostly disconnected from expectations. The series continues but I can’t think of any reason why I would read more. This is so much less than I expected, less than book 1.
