His initiation complete, Leg knew he had to prove himself worthy of the gift his totem had given him. The boy was facing a long and difficult journey to dangerous lands. Meanwhile, those with eyes set on ruling the Northern Empire were also making their move. But what was most important to Leg? His personal advancement or the integrity of the empire? Of course, it was possible the two priorities were inseparable, especially since a true wizard had been introduced to the world.

Vasily Mahanenko is a fantasy author working in the new genre of LitRPG - the MMO-based fantasy and sci fi. His Way of the Shaman series took Russian literature by storm in 2012.
Vasily dipped into his college-days insider knowledge as a hardcore gamer in order to create a believable world of the virtual-reality MMO game. His bestselling series combines fiction and video games, telling the story of Shaman and his friends stuck in the ruthless reality of Barliona. He used his more than ten years' experience as an ERP implementation project manager to approach his writing in a well-organized manner, working to a strict schedule, a set of deadlines and even a budget. At the moment, the series boasts six novels with the seventh one in the works - this time the author expands on stories of Shaman's companions and those who helped and supported him in his trials and tribulations.
The first book of the series has already been translated into English, with more translations to follow, aiming to make the Way of the Shaman series available to the English-language reader in its entirety.
Vasily's other passion is space exploration which is why he now works on a follow-up series entitled Galaktiona. Set in a space-simulator based world, the first book of the series in already finished while Vasily works on its sequel.
“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”
As the title says this is an advance copy review and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis. I hate trying to define my enjoyment and describe facets of it that would appeal to someone else. It is simply not my style. But for the sake of those fishing for clues:
Character development: exceptional Game elements: minimal Harem elements: none Tone: good coming of age saga in a unique new world
I will happily discuss the book with you on Goodreads if you are so inclined. As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here.
I received a review copy of this book. If you're a fantasy fan, this book will fit right into your collection. It has (some) LitRPG elements, but the references are minimal, and really only tangential to the story. Gamelit fans may or may not like this one depending on your preference for fantasy style stories. But, for what it's worth, I liked this one, and managed to pack it into a single day of reading, because I couldn't stop reading. Very well done.
Fast paced, great concept. The magic system using lines of force to describe how it works could use some fleshing out. I recommend this to anybody who likes fantasy/adventure with a good story arc.
The author consistently has his MC screw up and being dull witted going on stupid, this ineptness is especially blatant during any action scenes. These always seem drawn out in the extreme or explained away as "because so and so" resulting in a fuck up that is barely survived by him or resulting in some negative thing after a drawn out process where the lightbulb moment for the mc of how to win/fight comes to him always late. 1. Use his nominally mundane weapon idiotically.. Get his leg chewed up and then oh yeah why don't I just use my wizards abilities... 2. Not acting to fight the enemy because of retarded reason given, only to then kill 100+ friendly non combatants by mistake out of nowhere, all in an absurdly poorly written combat/action scene. Its all rather to rife with "wtf" moments.
Anyway this is really awkward the main character portrayal as a person shifts from as described to a supposedly fairly sharp and intelligent person. Ugh there is also a consistent reliance on the dread disease known as McGuffinitis. Along with some odd story progression that just made the book ultimately to annoying, resulting in a DNF for me.
I may try to get through it another time but as is reading this is the opposite of an entertaining/enjoyable activity.
I will add to (edit) this if I end up giving it another try.
What an absolute mess. The whole "7 reincarnations and memory loss" excuse barely worked in the first book to justify why the MC is such a brain-dead idiot constantly making rookie mistakes. Fine—I let it slide. But by book two? He’s recovering memories from his past lives, yet he’s STILL an incompetent fool who can’t make a smart decision to save his life. What’s the point of the memory gimmick if he’s going to remain clueless?
And don’t even get me started on the weird, borderline incestuous cousin relationship. I don’t care if his soul is from another world—his body isn’t. That’s disgusting. No amount of world-building can excuse that nonsense.
Then there’s his so-called mission. He’s supposed to learn from the goblins, right? At first, he’s desperate to leave, practically foaming at the mouth to get started. He’s even forced to stick around and train so he doesn’t die immediately. But the second no one’s holding him back? He drops everything to play hero and save an entire region. What happened to being in a hurry? What happened to not even knowing how to approach the goblins? The inconsistency is maddening.
I couldn’t finish this disaster. Maybe—MAYBE—if I run out of every other book on the planet, I’ll crawl back to this nonsense. But don’t hold your breath.
Second book was as good as the first still did not get all the answers that could of been given but its still a good story, cant wait for the next book in the series as i need to know what happens to leg.
The first book was great, this one filled in more of the story. The overall arch of the story plays out more in this book than the first. A definite must read.
Druhý diel išiel kvalitou dole, už to zase naberá tie kontúry s preháňaním vývoja, názorov a schopností 16-ročnej postavy. Oproti prvej časti viac prepchaté zbytočnosťami.
Such big drama to get access to the academy and then the MC won´t go ;-).
The MC´s family is a bit too dynastic for my taste. The grandfather is the emperor, the love is his cousin, his friend is his half brother, the shaman is his great grandfather and the angel Shadow is his grand mother.... It got a bit ridiculous. The same goes for the evil stink and pollution generators..
The story itself is underwhelming and the MC acts stupidly.
