Halloween Monster by Catherine Stock is one of a series of Holiday stories for young children. This simple story effectively portrays the concern of a little boy, Tommy, who is afraid of going Trick or Treating because he is afraid of monsters, ghosts and witches. The mother quicky and clearly reassures him that "There are no monsters or ghosts or witches." "Just little children all dressed up." She makes a costume which Tommy wears to go out on Halloween with a friend (and his father). I enjoyed the illustrations, particularly those with Tommy's dog.
With simple, clear text, & soft watercolors & colored pencil pictures, Stock has created an effective Halloween story for preschoolers that's a good read-aloud and can be comforting and give confidence to young children. For preschool to K.
This was a nice little story about a little boy and his friend and they are getting ready for Halloween, but the little boy doesn't want to go trick or treating. Later in the story we find out that he is afraid of monsters and it isn't until his mom helps him that he finds his courage to go out dressed in the very thing that scared him most!
Nice easy read for little kids. My daughter followed along with it and seemed to enjoy it.
I really liked the idea Stock has behind this little series of books about holidays. This book about Halloween appears very realistic to me. The little boy in the story is scared of the monsters, witches, and ghosts of Halloween, so he doesn't want to trick'or'treat, until his mother tells him that there will just be costumes. Its a simple resolution, but it is also a simple story.
