In Cowboy Wolf Outlaw , Kait Ballenger brings romance, action, and some suspense to the sixth (and final) book in the Seven Range Shifters paranormal romantic suspense series. Set in contemporary times in rural Montana near Billings, this novel features Grey Wolf assassin Malcolm Grey and Beauregard, a witch who can tell when someone is lying.

Malcolm is broody, withdrawn, and suffering from grief from the loss of his mate Bo followed by the death of his friend Austin. The pack is facing another battle with the vampires and the Volk featured in the last book. Trixie knows Malcolm is a wolf shifter and that the pack is in trouble. She also knows they’re attracted to each other, and trouble seems to follow her. Both are miserable, but can they find happiness?

Malcolm and Trixie are both somewhat broken characters. They have known each other for a year or so, but never dated. However, Trixie has flirted with him. They show a little growth over the course of the novel, but it seemed to happen too suddenly. These protagonists are definitely not boring, but will their secrets and flaws eventually doom the romance? There are some familiar secondary characters from previous novels that add conflict and support.

The plot was not as suspenseful as previous novels in the series, despite having several action scenes. This allowed the reader time to get to know the main characters and how they interacted as well as slowly building the suspense level. Will they take a chance on a happily ever after or will circumstances prevent it?

I cheered on the protagonists as the story progressed and became ever more dangerous and unusual. It held my attention and contained the elements that I love in this genre of books except for the weaker suspense. This book delivers on escapism through attraction, friendship, family, relationships, and romance while also tackling other serious issues including secrets, stressful situations, lies, domestic violence, revenge, and selfless sacrifice for others.

Overall, it was engaging, entertaining, and had me rooting for Malcolm and Trixie. A couple of the earlier action scenes are intense. It kept my interest and covered some deeper themes if a reader looks for them. The subplots tied together well, the main characters were strong, and the ending was satisfactory. The series is best read in order. I am looking forward to seeing what the author has in store for readers next.

Cowboy Wolf Outlaw by Kait Ballenger
Book 6 and conclusion of the Seven Range Shifters series. Paranormal wolf shifter romance. Best read as part of the series.
Malcolm has been the enforcer for the pack though he has never really considered himself included or part of the pack. Trixie is a bartender at the local pub. As a witch, she’s able to detect lies. She’s intrigued by Marcus when he doesn’t act like the typical drunk and protects her when there is a huge brawl in the bar.

There are a lot of interesting setups in this book.
What isn’t fully addressed in this conclusion is that ultimately it was a war between the vampires and wolf shifters, most of which took place in the prior two books though there is a minor piece still here. That sets up the series for the most part.
Malcolm was bi when he joined this pack but his partner was accidentally killed by a police organization which Marcus doesn’t believe was accidental. This sets up part of his anger with the pack in full.
Trixie is under a “slave” labor contract to her boss working off a debt she was tricked into. Because of this her loyalties must lie with her owner aka boss. She doesn’t have a choice.
Trixie is a strong and confident woman and witch. There are several very steamy sexual encounters between her and Marcus but to me it included very little romance.

Overall it’s a dark brutality between the wolves and other shifters and the suppression of Trixie bothered me as she is pretty much a slave.
I’m glad I was able to read the conclusion of the series that wraps up a few things. I would recommend the series in full for people that love shifters vs vampire troupes with an underlying romance. Each of the six books has a different couple but it’s always the same shifter pack and some of the characters, such as Marcus and Maverick, are in all the books.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley.

Malcolm is a wolf shifter and executioner for his pack. He just lost his mate, Bo and is still grieving. Malcolm is also bisexual which makes sense later on when we realize why he's so antagonistic towards Trixie in the beginning because he feels something for her. But the way he treats her got on my nerves more than once. Trixie is a witch and a bartender but Malcolm pretty much sees her as a human since she's not a shifter and he doesn't want to get involved with a human, so his feelings are being pulled in several different directions.

When Trixie overhears a plot against Malcom's pack, she goes to him and tells him what she heard and asks for his help since she's now in danger. Trixie's boss has something over her and uses it to his advantage. There's much action as the vampires are out to get Malcolm's pack and they have to find a way to win the fight.

I've been reading this series for a while and liked this book but even though you could read this as a standalone, it would make much more sense to read the series in order because there are so many characters and storylines going on. I liked this story but the romance fell short for me. Trixie was great but Malcolm didn't feel like he really wanted to be with her and it showed but for a fated mates story, Malcom's attitude was less than thrilling for most of the book.

Disclosure: I was given an e-ARC via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Book Club Read #2

I picked this book up while perusing the romance aisle. Looking for a cheesy read to bring to the table, my eyes were instantly met with a six book series of shirtless men in stetsons. Kait Ballenger’s Seven Range Shifter Series is a standalone romance series that brings in aspects of cowboys, wolves, and more cowboys.

Plot
Malcolm’s mate was killed in the crossfire. Trixie is a slave to the bar. Wolves and witches don’t mingle, especially because Trixie is the town tease, but these two are too sexy to hold back. They must learn to trust one another in the face of past relationship adversity and current vampire war schemes.

Issues
- The stereotypes are off the charts. I think Trixie is genuinely based off Dolly Parton and not a single chapter will go by without a reference to let you forget that.

- Malcolm is bisexual. This makes him a “monster and queer, all rolled into one” (Ballenger, 224). Except, he isn’t written that well. The only notion that he’s gay is the fact that he’s had a boyfriend in the past, but we never get any flashback scenes to understand the connection they had. The majority of Malcolm’s sexual desires are spent on Trixie, with sparse inner monologue directed at another male’s figure just so we won’t forget he’s not straight.

- There are a few plot holes in the book, mostly small, but a huge one surrounding Trixie’s deal with Boss. Isn’t she supposed to die after her sentence at the bar is up? Her truth telling witch abilities only come in handy when it’s useful to the plot, otherwise she might as well be human.

- This is the last book in the series, in which a giant battle between the wolves and vampires is supposed to be taking place. It isn’t until the last three pages in a few lazily written paragraphs that it actually occurs.

- Maybe some people think it’s hot when a man “shifts” into a wolf, howls with pleasure, and then transforms back into a human (completely naked). I just thought it was odd, and even weirder that the rest of this series was named similarly to this book: Cowboy Wolf Trouble, Cowboy in Wolf’s Clothing, Wicked Cowboy Wolf, Fierce Cowboy Wolf, and Wild Cowboy Wolf.

- I won’t even mention the occasional spelling mistakes and missing words.

COWBOY WOLF OUTLAW is the sixth and final instalment in Kait Ballenger’s contemporary, adult SEVEN RANGE SHIFTERS paranormal romance series. This is Grey Wolf assassin Malcolm Grey, and witch / bartender Trixie Beuregard’s story line. COWBOY WOLF OUTLAW can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but for backstory I recommend reading the series in order as there is an ongoing premise throughout. The SEVEN RANGE SHIFTERS series is a spin off from the author’s Execution Underground series.

SOME BACKGROUND: A group of cannibalistic shifters known as the Volk were forging ahead to take over the territory once used by the Seven Range Shifters. Reluctantly partnering with the Volk, the vampires are taking aim at the shifters, destroying anyone who get in their way.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Malcolm and Trixie) COWBOY WOLF OUTLAW follows the building relationship between Grey Wolf assassin Malcolm Grey, and witch / bartender Trixie Beauregard. Malcolm had lost his previous mate Bo to the Execution Underground, and struggled for months with the grief of his loss, choosing to drink away his pain at the Midnight Coyote Saloon, served by the woman that stirs at his heart but Trixie Beauregard is much more than human, and a woman who is struggling with her own demons from the past. When Trixie overhears plans to take down the Grey Wolf Pack, our heroine is pulled into a spiral from which she can never return but Trixie must take refuge with the Grey Wolf Pack, a pack that will see betrayal at the hands of our story line heroine. What ensues is the building relationship between Malcolm and Trixie, and the potential fall-out as Trixie becomes payment for a debt owed, a debt Malcolm is willing to take on his own.

The relationship between Trixie and Malcolm is a frenemies to lovers relationship in which Malcolm struggles with the loss of his mate. Trixie knows the pain of betrayal, of loss, of secrets and lies, and in this, tries to seduce our hero into something more. Malcolm never expected to find himself falling for our story line heroine but his fall threatens the pack that he was learning to call his own. The $ex scenes are passionate and intense but I dislike the use of a certain four-letter word in my ‘romance’ story line.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, supernatural secondary and supporting characters including Wes (Cowboy Wolf Trouble), Colt Cavanaugh (Cowboy in Wolf’s Clothing), Packmaster Maverick (Fierce Cowboy Wolf), Blaze and Dakota (Wild Cowboy Wolf); Warlock ‘Boss’; former waitress Dani, vampires Alaric, Corbin, and Cillian; Detroit Rock City MC shifters Dom, Reaper and Rigs. The requisite evil has many faces.

COWBOY WOLF OUTLAW is a story of betrayal, secrets, lies and forgiveness. The fast paced premise is intriguing and entertaining; the romance is impassioned and fated; the characters are broken, struggling, powerful and healing.

I really appreciated the fact that this cowboy wolf shifter biker was explicitly bisexual, not a lot of modern media is going to do that :) but unfortunately the plot was bare bones and resolved way too quickly and there wasn’t even that many sex scenes so I have no clue what took up 338 pages other than repeating the same “he/she doesn’t even know me, not really” sentiments for both main characters.

Cowboy Wolf Outlaw brings the Seven Range Shifters series to its conclusion. It’s always a bittersweet moment when I’ve loved a series and have to face saying goodbye to characters I’ve enjoyed and have become a bit vested in their happiness.

Malcolm is hurting in a way that only a wolf shifter who has lost their mate can feel. Bo was Malcolm’s world, and while Malcolm is bisexual and has a flirting conversation thing going on with Trixie, the waitress at the local bar, he isn’t actually acting on that in any real sense. He’s more drowning in grief than anything else – and the dangers that his pack still faces are at the forefront of his mind. All that is about to change when Trixie comes to him with new information – and a need for protection.

Trixie is a witch, and her unique talent as a witch comes in handy at the bar she works at. She’s been trapped here by a commitment given without full knowledge of all it entailed, and getting out might be a dream for one day. Until she learns plans that she knows Malcom’s pack needs to hear. Soon she’ll find herself fighting a stubborn wolf while simply trying to stay alive long enough to get him to see what they could be to each other.

I have enjoyed the Seven Range Shifters series so much. It’s hard to let it go. Cowboy Wolf Outlaw brought everything that I’ve enjoyed to this final story. One grumpy shifter, one caring human (witch but Malcolm uses human as almost an insult), pack danger, vile villains… and laughter, tears, fond memories as we get to see old friends, and of course the sizzling chemistry between Trixie and Malcom. This was a good wrap-up… and who knows, maybe we’ll get a spin-off one day and have a few cameos involving old friends. I had fun here, and although this one “could” be read as a stand-alone, I believe reading the series in order gives you access to so much more of the overall series – plus, every single one of these stories was amazing. Now begins the wait to see what this author brings us next. I can’t wait.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

Malcolm Grey and his packmates have buried another one of their brothers. Malcolm is still reeling from losing Bo, his mate, and now his friend, Austin.

The Grey Wolves know the battle isn't over with the Volk or Vamps, just a matter of time. Malcolm and Blaze are at the Midnight Coyote saloon for a meeting to convince other wolves to join in the fight.

Trixie, the bartender, knows the pain Malcolm carries and she has the ability to read people as a witch. The two play a game with one another but neither acknowledging the chemistry underneath.

Trixie's soft heart for those she loves gets her into trouble, and while fleeing, she manages to hook Malcolm into her mess by claiming to know a secret if he got her out of the saloon alive.

That trouble isn't going away and when she returned to her apartment, discovered the door ajar and her place ripped apart. A burner phone on the bed beckoned her, and when she placed the call to the only number she learns new terms to save herself, but rather than her helping her loved ones, she's being told to leave them out to dry.

Malcolm and Trixie have both been burned and have trust issues, but when Trixie shows up with her dog, Dumplin, in tow asking for protection, Malcolm opens his heart and only asks that she never lie to him. Trixie needs to find a way out of this mess she got herself into, even if it costs her freedom or life to protect those she cares for. She didn't realize that forgiveness was one way she didn't count on.

I love the world Kait Ballenger has created in this shifter series! I loved Dumplin and how he was a big teddy bear with all the other shifters but Malcolm. One scene where Malcolm was objecting to Dumplin being off his lease because the dog nearly bit him, and Maverick, the packleader, telling Malcolm to bite him back made me laugh out loud. Malcolm and Trixie were both outcasts, who would've thought that a witch and a wolf would be a good match?

This is the 6th book in the “Seven Range Shifters Series”. This is the 2nd book that I read by this author and I will most definitely be reading more from Kait Ballenger. Up front and center is Trixie who is a veritas witch and Malcolm is a wolf shifter and an assassin. Malcolm did not come from a good family; his father was horrible and his mother didn’t care about anyone but herself. Trixie has made mistakes that she is not too happy about. Malcolm’s pack is in trouble and being attacked. Trixie is a loner working at her bar and Malcolm is out for revenge for death of his friend. Trixie has been recruited to spy on the grey Wolfs and she has deep feelings for Malcolm. With Trixie coming on to Malcolm and being flirtatious Malcolm has other things on his mind as the battle with vampires and not really ready for a relationship. Trixie comes to the pack in need of help and things heat up rather quickly between Malcolm and Trixie. This is an awesome plot that is fast paced an easy read, entertaining, action packed and definitely a page turner that you will not want to miss out on.

The series is best read in order.

Although the book has some good action scenes, the suspense elements were weaker. This is a personal preference though, and may not be an issue for other readers.

Although it is marketed as a fated mate romance, this element was less obvious. Malcolm is still grieving the loss of his mate, Bo. Trixie is attracted to Malcolm but given both characters are fairly flawed and broken in their own ways, the attraction seems less organic.

Malcolm spends some time at the bar Trixie waitresses, drinking away his grief. Trixie is under a “slave” labour contract with her boss working off a debt she was tricked into. Because of this, her loyalties must lie with her owner / boss. This sets her up against the wolf pack Malcolm now calls home in a frenemies trope.

The book has some very intense passionate scenes between the MCs but I was not convinced of their ultimate "mate" status.

COWBOY WOLF OUTLAW by Kait Ballenger, book 6 and final book of the Seven Range Shifters series.

The series’ last book is about a broody, lone wolf, a Grey Wolf assassin, and a witch with sexual tension brewing between them, while dealing with revenge, betrayals, vicious supernatural crime ring, and blood-sucking vampires. It has been a wild ride with the Seven Range Shifters. I can’t wait to see what Kait Ballenger comes up next. I received this copy from the author, and this is my honest review.

Delightful Mix of Shifter and Cowboys!!

Our main characters are Trixie Beauregard, a veritas witch who can tell truth from lie; and Malcolm, a wolf-shifter who left Chicago as he didn’t belong, but he also doesn’t quite fit in Yellowstone.

A war is brewing between the pack and the vampires and the Volk. Politics, alliances, binding spells, loss, and romance will these pages perfectly.

Malcom Grey has never felt at home at Wolf Pack Run. Trixie Beauregard is trapped in a situation she wants to leave. Together, they might be able to run and start over with a new beginning.

Cowboy Wolf Outlaw was the sappiest and most romantic of the Wolf Pack Run six book series, but I think it might just be my favorite. It still had some sex, danger, and action, like the previous ones, but I was sad as I read knowing it was the last. Overall, I loved that the ending of this one led to new beginnings with a great wrap up of the series.

Who doesn't love cowboys - and wolf shifters - so shifter cowboys? Definitely! A great series that will take you by surprise. Revenge, justice, finding trust, and yes finding your fated mate, although they may not always be immediately on board. Ballenger is always a good time - and this series hits the mark

Trixie and Malcolm have been flirting for a while. The attraction between the two of them is sizzling. Malcolm is too focused on the upcoming battle with the vampires to want to get into another relationship. Trixie just wants Malcolm. These two people are so lost, they do not even know how to find themselves. I love Malcolm's character. He is so broken, sad, and thoroughly bad ass. I guess you could say the same about Trixie.

When Trixie needs to come to the pack for protection the intensity in their relationship heats up. With the battle hanging over their heads the two of them turn to each other for strength. I really enjoyed this character driven story. It is always fun to catch up with characters from the previous books and many were here. I am truly sad to see this series end. That being said this was one of my favorites.

Thank you to Netgalley and Sourcebooks for the ARC.

Cowboy Wolf Outlaw is a relentlessly heart-stopping journey that leads to something no one ever could have imagined. I found my heart shredded as I watched the maddening injustice that our beautiful characters faced time and again. It wasn't enough to just watch them encounter it, I felt like I was a part of their story which left a small piece of them tattooed on my very soul. I devoured this story with excitement and wonder, and I hated to see it end.

Trixie is no one's fool at least not anymore. She keeps her heart in a well fortified sanctuary where no one can shatter it. The only one to wield power over her heart will be here. Meanwhile she can't say the same about her life. She trudges on day after day hoping for something better. Malcolm has his own demons to wrestle with, so he isn't concerned with anyone else's problems. Trixie knows she needs to keep away from him, but her heart won't let her abandon him as he struggles to keep his head above water. Can Malcolm prove to be more then he appears, or will Trixie find herself completely wrecked by yet another man?

I was drawn to Malcolm like lightening to a lightening rod. There was something profoundly beautiful and precious about him and his heart. He was so much more then he saw in the mirror. Trixie was equally as miserable as Malcolm except she hid it better. When those two came together it was like watching a fire blaze out of control. They couldn't control their reactions to the other any better than firefighters can control a wild fire. I fel in love with this incredible couple, and I kept hope in my heart that they could both find what they needed and wanted. Such amazing beauty to behold!

Kait Ballenger is one amazing author who knows how to suck you into an action packed story and not lose any momentum along the way. In fact, she kept it up fast and hard as she opened these two amazing characters up to us. Not a step was missed, and I was lost to it all before I knew what was happening. That is some incredible writing that blew my mind and breathed life into my heart!

Malcolm gets the last story in this series. How would I describe him, broody, angry, sad. Yes his sad as his mate Bo was killed.

Trixie is a complicated character, that you need to take the time to see the real her.

Malcolm has a connection to the waitress, he sits there brooding but not acting on instincts, until he does!

The sexy scenes are hot, and there's a few 🔥

The characters were well written, the action and storyline kept you interested.

This is the final book in this series; I have read all of the books. Malcolm Grey is the assassin for the Grey Wolfs. Malcolm grew up not knowing he was a wolf in Detroit; he had a sadist stepfather who beat him and a mother that didn't care about anyone but herself. Malcolm is on the run and is caught and brought to the Grey Wolfs. Trixie Beauregard is a witch and works at a bar. She has made lots of mistakes in her life that she regrets; but staying alive is her main objective.
Trixie is recruited to spy on the Grey Wolfs; but really has fallen for Malcolm and doesn't want to spy on the pack. There is a lot of hot sparks between the two. When it all comes down to who will survive the last attack will Trixie come through for the wolves? She has been in debit to and old wizard; but it looks like he is betraying her now.
Overall, I really enjoyed Trixie and Malcolm's story. Of course, there's lots of hot sex!

Malcolm Grey is an assassin for the Grey Wolf Pack.  He grew up not knowing he was a shifter.  A traumatic event landed him with the pack,  and now he owes them everything.  His mate was recently killed so now he is out for revenge.

Trixie Beauregard is a truth witch who is bound to the warlock who owns the bar she works at.  Many things happen at the bar she disagrees with.  Trying to change things can be deadly.

This is an exciting and sexy paranormal romance that's full of action. Both our lead characters have a good reason for their trust issues. How those issues are resolved is what makes this a fascinating book.

This is the sixth book in the series,  but you don't need to have read the others to enjoy this one.  It would however give you closure if you have followed the series.

Great fun.

Trixie is a bartender and a veritas, which is a witch that knows when someone is lying. Her boss, Boss, has Trixie in a contract that she took from a boyfriend long ago. Malcolm is the executioner for his wolf pack. He already lost his true mate, Bo, and works and lives on the packs ranch. When Trixie overhears her boss and another man talking about Malcolm’s pack, she tells after she gets him to save her. Now Trixie is hiding out at the pack’s ranch and trying to figure out how to get out of her the mess she finds her in. The one thing Malcolm wanted from Trixie is no lies. When he finds out she has, will he loose her or forgive her?

Secrets and lies. Two people who have been hurt in the past. Great story. A hurt wolf shifter and a witch that “ flaunts what she has “. Can be read alone but is part of a series.
