One of the most significant teachings within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is that mortals are capable of becoming holy and, in time, like our beloved Savior. Whole in Christ, from renowned author and gospel scholar Robert L. Millet, encourages readers to encounter Jesus Christ daily, to hear Him, and to remain close to Him, always. None of us can live flawless lives, but we can progress on our pathway to perfection, or wholeness. Becoming a Christian is a work in progress. We will make our way up the holy mount of wholeness line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little. And the more we reflect on and trust in our Divine Redeemer, the more often He will lighten our heavy burdens and comfort our troubled hearts. This is a book about becoming better—much better—than we are. Though we may stumble at times, we can center our lives on the Son of God, stay on the gospel path, increase our service and love for one another, and find comfort and sanctification that comes from the pure love of Christ. This book illustrates how we can begin to emulate the Savior in mortality and how, through the power of His Holy Spirit, the Lord can help us develop a Christian character, thereby preparing us to dwell happily with Him forever.
I loved this book. It helped me realize that I can get better at my relationship with Christ. Bro. Millet says, "Becoming a Christian is a work in progress." Learning and growing into a Christ-centered person is, indeed, a work in progress.
This "work in progress" includes many tasks that keep me on my covenant journey. I am working toward that ultimate goal of the abundant life, possible only through the Savior's atonement.
A good book. However, and not in a bragging way, it is information I already had, so I felt that other than feeling reinspired to think on Christ and my relationship with him, I didn't really feel like I gleaned a lot of new information from this book. Perhaps that's because I read The Divine Center before - another excellent book about being whole and centered in Christ - that this book didn't stand out as much to me. It IS a really good book and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it. It is a strictly personal thing for me that I feel it didn't help 'propel' me further along... which is what I'm usually looking for in these types of "Good" books.
Still, here are a few good quotes I highlighted that stood out to me:
"President Ezra Taft Benson taught powerfully: 'Christ changes men, who then change their environment. The world would change human behavior, but only Christ can change human nature. Yes, Christ changes men, and changed men can the world. Men changed by Christ will be captained by Christ. Finally, men captained in Christ will be consumed in Christ.' "
"President Russell M. Nelson beckoned the Saints to strengthen their relationship with the Savior, 'When you reach up for the Lord's power in your life with the same intensity that a drowning person has, when grasping and gasping for air, power from Jesus Christ will be yours. WHen the Savior truly knows that you want to reach up to Him, when He can feel that the greatest desire of your heart is to draw His power into your life, you will be led by the Holy Ghost to know exactly what you should do. When you spiritual stretch beyond anything you have ever done before, then His power will flow into you.' "
"Jesus Christ is at the center of our hopes and reams, our longings and aspirations, our search for happiness and well being, and our source of stability. First, He is our ONLY hope for an abundant life here on Earth and Eternal Life in the Celestial Kingdom hereafter."
"Many years ago, President Boyd K Packer delivered a monumental address entitled The Mediator. 'Know this,' President Packer testified, 'truth, glorious truth proclaims there is a Mediator. Through Him, mercy can be extended to each of us without offending the eternal law of Justice. This truth is at the very root or Christian doctrine.' Notice what he said next: 'You may know much about the Gospel as it branches out from there, but if you only know the branches and those branches do not touch that root; if they have been cut free from that truth, there will be no life nor redemption in them.' "
He makes it sound so easy. He makes it sound so attainable. He makes it sound so clear.
Why do we make it just the opposite? How is it that our mortal bodies are so easily weekend, tempted, lured?
He does give some good suggestions that are easy to follow. He asks questions that are useful to get to the bottom of our obstacles.
All this will be different for you than for me. Let’s do our best to enjoy our journey. After all we are here to obtain joy, joy in Christ, joy in truth, joy in following, joy in the journey!
It’s a little difficult for me to articulate just why this book was a 5 star for me. Like most gospel teaching, little to none of this book was novel or new. Most of the quotes and principles I’ve heard before. (The exceptions here are Robert Millet’s personal stories.)
Maybe it’s just simply that I needed this book at the time that I read it. The quotes and the stories and the scriptures just worked together and I really enjoyed it.
I listened to this book, so it felt like being taught by Bro. Millet again. This was a wonderful book full of the doctrine and principles as found in the words of scripture and modern prophets that help us understand what the Savior Jesus Christ has done for all of us. Bro. Millet's insights are very helpful and the experiences he shares illustrate the doctrine and principles for coming unto Christ and relying upon Him and being made whole by Him in poignant ways. While I have a couple of minor disagreements with a couple of things in the book, it doesn't detract from the overall marvelous message of the book, which is that all and each of us can be made whole in Christ, regardless of what our sins, temptations, trials, challenges, difficulties or problems might be. We all need Jesus Christ to help us become all that Heavenly Father has sent us here to become. It is a very short book, well written, and would be easy to read for youth and adults in the Church. And I highly recommend it. I have already recommended it to several people. I hope that we may all come to accept the fulness of the grace of Christ in our lives.
Avoid comparing yourself to other people/other saints
If you must compare yourself with anyone, then compare yourself to our Savior, Jesus Christ.
All have God-given gifts
Discover our own individual gifts
Walk in the steps of Jesus
Put people first, be willing to be inconvenienced
People matter, very much People’s feelings matter, more than some of us can even imagine
“God and Christ are in the business of people, and so must we be, if we are to follow where Jesus leads.”
Received grace for grace
We progress from grace to grace
Service sanctifies the soul. It rewards those who set aside their own agenda, for a time, and become involved in the work of Him who went about doing good.
Deny yourself of all ungodliness
“Are you willing to let God prevail in your life?” -President Nelson
“The submission of one’s will is really the only uniquely personal thing we have to place on God’s altar. The many other things He has already given or loaned to us.” -Elder Neal A. Maxwell
The heart must be purified
“I’m a follower of Jesus. I do my best to treat the people I encounter as kindly and respectfully as I can.”
WOW!!! What a great book. I absolutely loved it. It is a great end/beginning of the year book to read.
It has lots of ideas on setting goals and making changes. I like the questions to ponder. I love books that teach me something and make me feel excited to implement what I learn.
This book testifies of Christ and how we can become whole through Him. He is a great teacher without making you feel unworthy or overwhelmed. It's a lot of information I knew, but was a great reminder. He is very articulate and deliberate about his topics and stories.
I could really feel his faith in and love for the Savior. I highly recommend this book, especially right now as we pass through the year into a new year with new beginnings. This book will leave you inspired to be more like our Savior.
Another excellent volume by Robert Millet. I've come to deeply appreciate his insights into the gospel and its application in my life, and this book lived up to my hopes and expectations. In it he explores the ways in which the Savior's atonement applies in our lives, and our own part in that unique and eternal relationship. Keeping Christ at the center of my thoughts and actions, accepting our mortality without becoming obsessive over the things of mortality, how we manifest our love for him, patterns of a divinely-inspired life, and how we become complete or whole in Christ. Well-written, helpful, and worth reading.
I appreciate this book and it’s hopeful tone. Millet does a great job articulating aspects of the gospel that we often forget about or get overwhelmed by: repentance, perfection, service, discipleship, and more. If we are yoked with Him we will achieve peace and a great eternal future. We’re all here doing our best. Good reminder to be aligned with Christ by being aligned with His laws too.
As always Robert L. Millet teaches by the spirit. He explains things so I and others can understand. He uses prior and present leaders to help show examples and to help us open our hearts and minds. Is book is what I needed to hear and read at this time in my life.
Great book and a wonderful reminder that being whole is a process not an event. We move from grace to grace, here a little, there a little. Brother Millet makes being "whole" much less complicated than I have made it!
This book was very well written. I think I might need to read more of Millet's books. He has a very eloquent way in writing that I thoroughly enjoyed. I also really liked how he called things out and was blunt about some topics.
Beautiful. I felt prompted to read more books about Jesus Christ and this was an absolutely wonderful way to start. It's a smaller book, but packed with inspiration and Brother Millet's excellent combination of solid writing and even more solid doctrine.
A wonderfully inspiring book that reminds of how "Becoming a Christian is a work in progress." That it is only through Jesus Christ that we can become whole, and through His help, we can stay on the covenant path back to him. It was very reaffirming of truths I already know and love.
This book changed my perspective of “perfect”. It is filled with so many thought provoking ideas that I truly appreciate. I can say I’ve grown closer to my Savior bc I read this! Would highly recommend
This, for me, was a short and pleasant book. I appreciated the laser focus on Christ and how everything needs to be focused on him. This book and its chapters seemed to have a better flow to them compared to some of his other books.
Brother Millet is so calming to listen to! His voice can calm my heart as I listen to the words that teach me to know Christ better. So I can become more like Him. Thanks so much. 💖
