Reeling from the death of his beloved mother, at the hands of a drunk driver, thirteen-year-old Jonathan is struggling with the aftermath while living with an abusive, alcoholic father.
Past curfew one night, Jonathan, plagued by nightmares, ventures into the forest by his Pacific Northwest home, trying to escape his life at home and come to terms with his devastating loss. While wandering aimlessly, he hears a blood-curdling scream that freezes him in his tracks.
Faced with the dilemma of whether to investigate and potentially put himself in harm's way, his adventurous spirit wins out and he stumbles upon more than he bargains for. Jonathan soon discovers that a serial killer has been running amok and using the forest as his own personal playground.
This suspenseful murder mystery will bring out a plethora of emotions in the reader, as it touches on loss, friendship, redemption and coping, all while keeping you on the edge of your seat, with twists and turns you won't see coming.
One of my favorite things about being a book reviewer and reader is coming across these incredible authors and under-talked stories. I had the pleasure of being able to read this and I had absolutely no idea how emotional and touching the story would be.
In this story, we follow our thirteen-year-old main character, Jonathan (Same name? How funny!), who is reeling from the loss of his beloved mother… who, unfortunately, was a victim of a drunk driver. Aside from his super abusive and alcoholic father, Jonathan feels so alone. One night, Jonathan decides to sneak out trying to escape his life at home - seriously though, poor kid… going through a traumatic and grieving process with no support from his father. Anyways, as Jonathan is exploring the forest he comes across something that sounds like a scream - super creepy!!! On top of that, he has these recurring nightmares that add so much suspense to the story.
As Jonathan’s curiosity overtakes him, he begins to investigate and puts his life in danger. He soon realizes his decision was super dangerous and he discovers there’s a serial killer on the loose... And to make it worse, he’s using the woods as his own personal playground.
I absolutely enjoyed this book so much and felt so attached to Jonathan. I mean honestly though how could you not when he has the same name? Jonathan just goes through such a difficult situation. I could never imagine how hard it would be for a thirteen-year-old, honestly kudos to him for adapting to change and realizing how life must go on - yes it'll be difficult, but he’s a super brave and courageous kid.
I think it was super fascinating reading and following a thirteen-year-old protagonist. The memories he had of his happy life with his mother and father had me so emotional. I felt so moved by the way he described his life prior to his mother's passing. He’s also super intelligent, the way he went on his own and figured out about the serial killer.
Additionally, this book gave us the killer’s POV… I got literal chills when reading those. They were so disturbing and dark, but I was so fascinated and found myself flipping those pages as I needed to know what was going on.
Jonathan also comes across this father figure, Luke, who I instantly enjoyed. The way he cared and treated Jonathan had me so emotional - the animals involved too? So wholesome!! I honestly think the character development was absolutely phenomenal and the writing style was beautifully written.
This story was super suspenseful and creepy, while also mentioning some important family growth. For example, I’m sure based on the premise you don’t like the father and his treatment towards Jonathan, however, redemption and growth is an important message that is so well portrayed.
I instantly fell in love with the story and knew it would be a super enjoyable one. It’s not like other overly talked thrillers, this one has some important elements. It’s also super suspenseful and Jonathan was incredibly portrayed as someone to root for. It also had a super eerie atmosphere, I would never go out of my way to explore those woods - bravo to you Jonathan (the thirteen-year-old).
I loved this whole exploration and journey, not only was there a serial killer roaming around - but there were also so many important themes mentioned. It’s super emotional with its talk of loss, friendship, grieving and coping/adapting to the present.
Overall, this was an incredibly well-written debut. It has some imagery that added to the creepy story and the characters felt so realistic, you seriously will want to read all the way through in one sitting. I loved overcoming this grieving process - while also adding that suspenseful serial killer story. I highly recommend checking out Just Jonathan by Donna Scuvotti - I also can’t wait to continue his story in Deadly Vendetta.
Jonathan is such a resilient young man, after the loss of his mother from a drunk driver hitting them he has had to take care of himself. The grief was too overwhelming for his father who turned inside himself and drowned his grief.
Jonathan took to trekking through the forest and one night he heard a scream, like blood curdling.
This starts him off on an adventure uncovering the mystery in the forest and along the way he makes some unlikely friends.
This book had me hooked from the beginning as I wanted to find out what happened next through each twist and turn. Also, there was so much happening within Jonathan's family with his father. The characters were so well developed and it was multiple point of view but we were mostly viewing from Jonathan's POV. I always enjoy the killer's POV however disturbed it is.
There was a whole true crime lifecycle with the mystery, stakeout, detaining the criminal and then a trial.
I also loved the found family that Jonathan made for himself and the whole farm of animals.
This is definitely a book about grief, hope, found families, and suspenseful stakeouts to uncover a serial killer. A perfect fall read!
There is a teaser for Book 2 at the end, can't wait to see what Jonathan gets up to next!
Thank you Donna Scuvotti for the gifted copy for my honest and voluntary review!
This was a great debut novel with well written and developed characters. I found Jonathon to be so endearing and wished that I could crawl through the pages to give him a big hug! I really loved the relationship that he had with Luke and how he became a father figure to him when he needed it the most.
This was a suspenseful, fast paced book and I really enjoyed it!
Than you Donna Scuvotti for the gifted copy of this book!
“Dreams shattered by just being in the wrong place at the wrong time."
That’s what happened with Jonathan at the vulnerable age of thirteen. In one moment, his perfect life crumbles and turns into a nightmare. After his mother gets killed in a car accident, he finds himself thrown out of the warm cocoon of a loving family. "It was so traumatic that it burned the childhood right out of me, which was unfortunate because now I felt like I couldn’t relate to anyone my age."
The experience is even more traumatic since Jonathan is left alone to cope with his grief. Although his father isn’t dead, the way he treats the situation and his son almost makes it worse that he’d stayed alive. "He went from being the best Dad in the world to not even caring if we had food in the house or wondering where I was."
"Just Jonathan" by Donna Scuvotti tugged at my heartstrings and stirred many a memory from my own past.
I could deeply relate to what Jonathan has to go through in this story. The feeling of your perfect life shattering into a million pieces is familiar to me. One summer, you are still a happy child surrounded by a loud, loving, and caring extended family. Everything is just like it’d been for the first decade of your life. And then, the next summer your life crumples and shrinks, and nothing gets back to what it was ever again.
I lost my best friend when I was about the same age as Jonathan. For me, it was both bewildering and shattering. Bewildering because until then, I hadn’t encountered death, let alone the death of someone so close. She wasn’t simply a friend, one of the company of jolly teenagers hanging in school corridors between classes. She was that only person who talked to me when I arrived at the new school. With all my friends with whom we had been together since kindergarten left behind, dumbfounded by the realisation that from now on, I have to make a whole journey to get to school – twenty minutes by train followed by an even longer walk – instead of simply crossing the road, I felt completely lost. Anna didn’t let me feel this way for long. As soon as I appeared in the classroom doorway, she approached me, asked my name and offered to sit together. I hadn’t fit in until graduation – bookish kids would understand – but at least I didn’t feel unhappy and forlorn. Thanks to Anna. A few years later, there was an incident – one of many; working with children, people stop paying too much attention to them I guess – a classmate hurt Anna, she went home and spent some time not attending school. And then, I called her, wishing to ask when she was going to be back, and her mother picked up the phone and said that Anna was gone… I was devastated. I couldn’t even gather the courage to tell my aunt and mom that my best friend died. How can you put into words something that you aren’t able to understand?
Little did I know back then that it was only the first experience of losing someone dear and important to me. In the next few years, I lost my father and my two loving aunts.
“Just Jonathan” is a real treat for everyone who loves animals. Only the person who adores animals could have described how profound the therapeutic impact of having them around can be. The author has managed to do it masterfully. I loved Sydney the golden retriever and wouldn’t mind cuddling up with Luke’s calico cat.
The story makes an unexpected turn when Jonathan meets Luke. Their first meeting already felt like a life-changer but in a way completely different from what Jonathan could imagine. And from there, a rollercoaster of events and revelations starts.
I don’t want to spoil the experience of unwrapping this story for you, so I’d better leave it here. I’ll only add that “Just Jonathan” is the book that will surprise you, for it will lead you to the paths you don’t expect you’ll be treading when you start reading.
Imagine losing your mother to a horrific traffic accident involving a drunk driver at the age of thirteen. This is exactly what happens to Jonathan. Now if this wasn’t bad enough, his father Michael, a successful attorney, falls into a deep depression and ends up drinking so heavily he soon becomes an alcoholic. He soon stops being a father and completely checks out. Amid this upheaval, Jonathan, who is an extremely mature and intelligent young man tries to navigate his new world after it has been turned completely upside down. After hearing horrible screams in the forest near his home, Jonathan seeks to find answers and soon teams up with an older man named Luke who is on the same mission. Luke himself has a troubled and scarred past but despite their own dire personal circumstances, they push on to get to the bottom of what exactly is going on. What they uncover will haunt them for the rest of their lives. The story accurately describes the devastating long-term impact a drunk driver can have on a person and an entire family. What struck me about this book was how the author thoughtfully infused the story with so much detail about each of the characters inner struggles, thoughts and hopes. This made the story come alive and connected me to each character. This is a highly emotional and gripping story. You will slowly discover not only how much Jonathan, Luke and Michael are hurting; but also how much they have in common. The novel highlights the importance of perseverance, optimism in the midst of adversity and most importantly the power of love. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who loves a great story with a powerful positive message.
Just Jonathan is a touching yet thrilling story about a young man dealing with the sudden loss of his mother and in a way, the loss of his father.
Donna Scuvotti creates a terrifying situation for this young man that leads him to grow up, to develop a strong friendship, and reconnect with his dad. I love how it all comes together. Life is full of surprises, and Scuvotti takes the reader through a few chilling surprises.
I enjoyed Scuvotti’s writing style and how she created well developed characters. (I especially loved the Pooh quotes!). I’d recommend this book.
"There is nothing as exhilarating as the thrill of a kill. I can't explain the excitement I get when I lie in wait for the right specimen....and the look in their eyes when they recognize me."
"My dearest Dad, I miss you. I love you. And above everything else...I forgive you...Please stop drinking, and find your way back to the way we were..."
The above quotes perfectly demonstrate the amazing dichotomy found in the debut thriller Just Jonathan by Donna Scuvotti. This murder mystery thriller pulled on my heartstrings.
Jonathan is a sweet and very smart 13 year old only child who has lost his Mom to a drunk driver. His father has become an abusive alcoholic unable to deal with the death of his wife. When the story is told from Jonathan's POV I just wanted to hug him and tell him he could come live with me.
Suffering from nightmares he sneaks out of the house one night and follows a terrifying scream coming from the woods near his home. He spots a large man standing next to a severed leg and he runs.
Jonathan, desperate for some form of love and security, is befriended by Golf War Vet Luke who suffers with PTSD. Along with Luke and his loyal dog Sydney and bad ass cat Buffy ( named appropriately) Jonathan forms a family and starts to investigate when it becomes clear there is a serial killer in his town.
One of the most impressive things about this book is the grace and honesty about the relationship between Jonathan and his Dad. I really hated Dad at first but with great care this writer showed a person caught up in his own pain. Though no excuses were given for his horrific actions there was understanding in giving a chance for redemption.
I loved the OMG twists and the killer's POV. This is an author with a thriller instinct that wears her heart on her sleeve.
I received a free copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
Thank you, Donna Scuvotti and Goodreads for a copy of Just Jonathan!
Jonathan is demonstratively wise beyond his thirteen years and has suffered much pain and loss. From the first page, the strong desire to protect and comfort him is palpable. His father is suffering as well but makes horrible choices, thus rendering Jonathan essentially orphaned.
As the story progresses, Jonathan becomes more endearing, but perhaps less relatable. I had to keep referring to the back of the novel: "The author's writing style in this novel - a skillful use of parallelism and a willingness to experiment with traditional fiction form - complements her deep insights into the human condition." This helped a lot when Jonathan felt too in-touch with his many, many feelings. Again, as stated, he is wise beyond his years but it felt odd reading his thoughts knowing they were from a thirteen-year-old boy and not from an adult female. However, I did appreciate his circumstances and those of the other people involved in his life.
Jonathan has strong male influences in his life. Without spoiling anything, let's just say fathers are powerful. Scars are forever but redemption is possible. Everyone needs a Luke in their life. Animals are awesome and coupled with the good ending for all made the warm and cuddly feelings spring forth. (Thank you for not ending the book on a cliffhanger!)
Scuvotti kept the book interesting with an intense need-to-know-what-happens-next feeling. After dealing with a serial killer, one can only imagine what Jonathan will stumble upon in her next novel!
Just Jonathan is a wonderful book about the grieving experience and growing up of an exceptional boy. His family dynamics, mental well-being, maturity, friendships, adventure and mystery solving become part of what is a guaranteed page turner, where readers will fall in love with the protagonist and champion him throughout. Donna Scuvotti’s debut is a cleverly plotted story with excellent character development, soaked in empathy, emotion & relatable struggles. Jonathan talks us through the story from his perspective, with attention to detail, seeing the simplicity in life yet also the challenges. He is the heartbeat of the book and the authors writing style and vivid descriptions allows for a visual creation in the head of the reader. The book is written from multiple POV, which lets us enter the mind of the other characters and helps makes the book an even more exciting read. The short chapters help keep the suspense and engagement. Jonathan’s adventure with Luke is compelling, and the added snippets of human connection, parental bonds, love for animals and challenges of being a young teenager are added in through poignant sentences that give a touch of magic to the book. A brilliant read, I look forward to reading more from the author. Highly recommended.
This was a stunning debut. This book is so much more than a serial killer in the woods.
It’s about a 13 year old, the tragedy’s that he has been through the past 14 months, he seen mother die in a crush, and now his father is cold, abusive, neglectful and seems to love alcohol more than him. He is plagued by nightmares and one night wakes up to hear screaming in the woods so he goes to investigate. He sees a man there next to severed leg and runs.
He also meets Luke a retired Golf War Vet who is dealing with his own struggles but the two form a strong bond and finally the healing for Jonathan begins the two are determined to trap the killer.
There were definitely a few twists that I wont spoil, some intense courtroom scenes and the promise of a sequel which I look forward too.
Get yourself ready to enter in a dark world full of intricate mystery weaving itself to a thirteen year old boy yet filling his world with agitation and dread. As he ventured on a voyage to discover the undiscovered and to unleash the secrets beneath the depth. The journey is filled with twists and turns. From going through an evocative passage of time to connecting the disconnected chords, you will find yourself hooked.
This is an atmospheric thriller that takes you on the journey of Jonathan. He has recently lost his mother and struggles to have a good relationship with his alcoholic father.
Now Jonathan has found something chilling in the woods by his house and is trying to figure out what his discovery means.
Everyone thinks Jonathan is so simple but he is much more than JUST Jonathan.
Just Jonathan was a gripping story from the first chapter! I absolutely fell in love with Jonathan, he had been through so much and he kept going. I loved that I didn’t know what was going to happen next, I will be anxiously awaiting the release of the next book!!
Despite the book written for teens it was easily enjoyed by me in my thirties. I believe this book is part of a sequel and I'm excited to see where the author takes readers next.
I can honestly say that I have never read a murder mystery book where the protagonist is a young boy who’s coming of age. From the very first page I wanted to protect Jonathon and will him to be safe and well. Jonathon’s story is one of grief and having to grow up quickly because his dad has taken his grief to another level, and has become a man that Jonathon no longer recognises. The young man finds solace in the forest close to his home and stumbles across a grim discovery. Being adventurous and curious, Jonathon sets out with the new friend he has made, in unravelling the mystery of grim things that has been happening in his town. A story of heartbreak that will bring out the empath in you, disgust and frustration at the injustice of the subplots and keeping you wanting to keep reading just to find out who, why and what happened. The author has executed the sensitive issues with good grace and yet keeps the momentum of intrigue and squeezing your eyes in the hope that the worst isn’t going to happen. A great storyline— and I can’t wait to begin reading the sequel. I never thought I’d ever say this about a thriller but, it’s charming and endearing as well as nail biting. A recommended read from me!
While this book has multiple POV's, the clearest and strongest voice is that of thirteen-year-old Jonathan who is struggling with the sudden death of his mother. The mystery surrounding a slew of murders in the forest serves as a rite of passage for Jonathan and the story is, at times, heartbreaking. It would have been interesting to conclude how Jonathan's father and Luke had developed towards the end of the book from their own POV, which is why I'm looking forward to the sequel which follows Jonathan as an adult. Great debut!

I really enjoyed Just Jonathan, the debut thriller from indie author Donna Scuvotti. It’s a coming of age journey for 13 year old Jonathan as he copes with the loss of his mother, an alcoholic father, and his desire to set the world right. He gets his chance to create some order in his life when he stumbles upon a clue and teams up with an unlikely new acquaintance to solve a case that’s remained open for years. Captivating, beautifully deep characters. There were some parts of this thriller that made me cringe, in part because I worried about Jonathan’s naïveté as he navigated his surroundings as a youth in search of help and support.
I wish I could have read this book with the innocence of the titular Jonathan. I think my own twisted world view caused me to suspect the intentions of some characters!
My own personal world view about such matters did not stop me from thoroughly enjoying this book. A daring debut novel from Scuvotti that courageously tackles some difficult subject matter like alcoholism.
Well done.
The sequel is forthcoming and I look forward to many more wonderful stories from Scuvotti. She keeps you in suspense the entire time while taking care to create characters the reader genuinely cares for and wants to root for amidst all the turmoil.
I recommend this book for thriller fans and for anyone interested in a hopeful coming of age story about a young boy who finds a way to turn his life around despite all the odds being stacked against him.
Put Scuvotti on your list of indie authors to follow on social media.
For this being a debut novel, I am very impressed. Just Jonathan had me hooked from the opening line, and kept my attention all the way to the last page. I was super intrigued by the plot, and had to know what was going to happen next. There were also a few “oh sh*t” moments that had me at the edge of my seat, along with a plot reveal in the later half that I didn’t see coming. I absolutely loved the amount of character depth and backstory I got to experience as well. It made the characters feel real and relatable in some way, shape, or form. This story is more than a suspenseful murder mystery. It also explores the human condition, as Jonathan and cast learn to cope with a whole spectrum of emotions and difficult life topics. My heart completely broke for Jonathan. He’s had to deal with so much. I just wanted to reach into the book and give him a big hug!
I’m excited to see what Donna does next. She is a new author worth watching! I’m so ready to throw money down on her next book the moment it comes out!
This is a touching tale of a 13 year old boy struggling through life having to deal with the sudden death of his mother, Emma, along with a disconnected, grieving, alcoholic & abusive father.
Young Jonathan stumbles upon a frightening sight while wandering through the woods near his home. As he considers what he has encountered, he reflects back to happier times with his mother and father. Johnathan is a lonely child who longs to have the love of his mother and father and tries to make sense of his life. He is wise beyond his years and has had to grow up fast taking care of himself and his dad.
Jonathan and his dad, Michael, want to bridge the gap that has formed between them since Emma died at the hands of a drunk driver but both are apprehensive.
Jonathan befriends a father figure in his quest to determine what he saw in the woods. Meanwhile, Michael is fighting to turn his life around. Along the way, both make discoveries with some twists along the way.
Scuvotti’s first work of fiction was a great read for me, full of heartfelt moments of sadness, plenty of suspense, and a healthy supply of tasty meals! I was highly impressed by the authors ability to tell the tale from the perspective of a 13-year old boy! Jonathan’s character brought back some of my own memories from many years ago, and I enjoyed the nostalgia that his nature-loving, adventurous, and curious personality brought to mind. Michael, Luke, and the Sheriff were all intriguing characters as well, brought to light by the author’s fantastic skill with descriptive language. Scuvotti made it easy to get inside their heads, and to envision the picturesque setting of the Pacific Northwest woods. I’ll be sure to pick up any other work from this author, which I was excited to find out will include a sequel to Just Jonathan. Looking forward to more great writing from Scuvotti!!
I was really surprised by this debut novel by Donna Scuvotti. This was a complex thriller with a few twists and turns and I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the multiple viewpoints throughout the novel and enjoyed Donna’s writing style. Just Jonathan was a really quick read for me and I’m always happy about that. My heart ached for Jonathan and everything he has been through during his short 13 years of life. There was a bit of a hint of a sequel to this novel and I’m anxious to see where Jonathan goes from here. Donna has written a very emotional and thrilling novel here that would be a perfect fall read for you. Enjoy!
Just Jonathan is an atmospheric suspense murder mystery set in the Pacific Northwest. Jonathan is a very self-aware and forgiving young man who has gone through a lot in his young life, and it leads him to an unexpected adventure and friendship within the woods. I feel like he's the kind of person that young people would aspire to like. I enjoyed how the story unfolded- there was a great twist in there that I didn't see coming-and I liked also how the atmosphere shifted from being spooky and tense to warm and cozy. It's a mostly happy ending but does leave some room for an intriguing sequel, which I hear is in the works! Very exciting!
I went into this book expecting just another serial killer mystery, but walked away with so much more… The imagery simply swept me away and I was reminded of the beautiful [and sometimes terrible] complexities of relationships! . As the mother of a 14 year old boy, my heart immediately went out to Jonathon. I cannot imagine how my own son would handle essentially losing both parents–one to death and the other to alcohol. Jonathan's strength to persevere no matter what challenges he is faced with is astounding. . Don't hesitate to pick up this debut novel. I promise it has enough twists & turns to keep you turning the pages to the very end… And what an end it is!
If you like redemption stories and suspense-thrillers, this book is right up your alley! We had the opportunity to read this early on pre-release, and we fell in love with Jonathan as a character. His backstory and all he’s had to go through, combined with the current obstacle and mystery he faces, made me keep reading so I can find out what happens and how everything resolved. And the setting was gorgeous, perfect for those cozy days this time of year. It’s a great debut, and I’m looking forward to reading other things from this author!
Before I read JJ, it was marketed to me as a “chiller with heart” and that is the perfect description. As a mother of a 13 year old boy, I connected with Jonathan immediately as I read. I imagined my own son experiencing what happens and my heart felt for Jonathan. There are a few surprises, twists and turns, but mostly there is a story of love and compassion through tragedy. The unexpected become friends and a teenage boy walks a path most could never imagine. Donna’s writing is easy to read, flows nicely, and her imagery is spot on!
After hearing great things about her debut novel, I was excited to read another indie author’s work! Plus, I wanted to completed it before the sequel was released. I made it! Jonathan is a very intuitive teenager who recently experienced the loss of his mother. His struggle to deal with his heartbreak leads him into the nearby forest where real-life nightmares take place. Thankfully for Jonathan, the forest also brings healing in a surprising friendship. Thank you to the author for her debut novel in exchange for an honest review!
It’s not very often you get a coming of age drama, mixed with a mystery thriller, and that’s what this debut novel serves up. Following thirteen year old Jonathan, this book instantly hooks you into the danger, while filling you in with his tragic backstory. There’s plenty of turns, horrors, suspense, twists, and unexpected forgiveness as you follow Jonathan in solving the tail of a serial killer, while also finding himself.
Once in a while we stumble upon a book that's special. One that you instantly connect with, as if it had been written just for you.
This was one of them for me:
Just Jonathan by Donna Scuvotti
The blurb presents it as a suspenseful murder mystery, that 'will bring out a plethora of emotions in the reader, as it touches on loss, friendship, redemption and coping, all while keeping you on the edge of your seat, with twists and turns you won't see coming.'
And it delivers on all counts.
The story of 'JUST Johnatan', is that of a 13 year old boy forced to step up to the plate and become the man of the house after losing his mother in a tragic accident, while his father turns to alcohol for solace. It is one of those stories that's bound to move even the grumpiest readers out there. Seriously people, you'd have to have a heart of stone not to feel for, and with, young Jonathan. JUST a regular kid who happened to find himself in a predicament even grown-ups will have trouble dealing with. And he does it in JUST the right way to touch hearts. By being JUST to the bone, with both those around him, as well as himself.
The very first chapter had me hook, line and sinker, and kept me glued to the pages till the very end. Because of the palpable atmosphere the writer creates, and the intriguing mystery. But most of all, because of the complexity of Jonathan's predicament. The predicament of a boy who struggles to cope with grief, neglect, abandonment and abuse, while managing to retain that bright spark of love and belief in kindness that defines a good soul. And trust me when I say, that's a damn hard thing to do in his circumstances. Not many of us would rise to the task and that's not pettiness but experience speaking.
For critics, this book may not be perfect. The pace may be seen as a bit off and Jonathan's voice a bit too mature even for his old soul. But for me, as a reader coming from a similar background as that young boy, it's a trip down memory lane ending in a big, strong soul hug. Just like a soothing balm on a wounded heart.
Reading it took me back to a time when I had to step up to the line and be the woman of the house. And alongside Jonathan, I remembered: - those times full of despair when you think no one cares, when you believe you don't matter, - that fear while you tiptoe around the house, hoping you aren't seeing or heard, - that crushing disappointment when you try so hard and your efforts are ignored, - that mistrust you can't help but have towards a seemingly new chance at happiness, because you've been kicked down one too many times. This author gets them all to the point!
And most of all, she made me remember that one moment which became too much. Because 'there comes a time when everyone has had enough, and they reach their breaking point.'
Sometimes, we cannot forgive ourselves for breaking, and failing to try again. And sometimes, a young boy with an old soul reaches out to you from the pages of a book and let's you know: that's perfectly ok.
Jonathan's tale is an intriguing murder mystery with a nice little twist but above all else, it's a tale of redemption and healing, friendship and forgiveness. A tale that touches hearts. I loved Luke and his gentle care. We could all do with someone like him in our lives. And I adored the end. A beautiful, imperfectly perfect end that any Jonathan out there deserves to have.
Hugs and light Bookdragons And remember:
'You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.'
