That Girl: The Montgomerys

Rate this book
That Girl is a Contemporary Romance Writers 2021 Stiletto Finalist and a Chesapeake Romance Writers 2021 Rudy Finalist!

I was that girl; the one from a broken home who lived on the poor side of town. He was that guy; NFL football quarterback and Mr. Popular. He told me he would never leave. He lied. Now he’s back. But I’m not that girl anymore.

Aurora St. Claire is that girl. The one who excels at academics. The one from a broken home who lives on the bad side of town. The one with an alcoholic mother who couldn’t care less if she existed. The one with an abusive older sister who would give her bruises instead of hugs. The one who keeps to the shadows, trying not to be seen.

Sometimes the best families are the ones you create, not the ones you are born into. Aurora never knows what a true family is like until she has one suddenly thrust upon her at the age of eighteen. It takes a single revelation from a stranger to change her life forever.

Then, JD Hallstead comes barreling into her life. He is everything she never thought she wanted, but everything she craves. That is, until the day he destroys her and leaves her heart to burn to ashes in his wake. What is the adage? The flip side of love is hate. Well, her hate burns bright, and it has a name: Jackson Dillon Hallstead.

JD Hallstead is that guy. The one who is Mr. Popular and Quarterback King of Highland High. The one voted class president and most likely to succeed. The one who girls go crazy over and guys want to be. The one with a controlling, abusive father who will go to any lengths to keep his son in check. The one with the secrets.

Aurora is the girl JD has secretly crushed on for years. It takes a friend’s tragic death to bring Aurora and JD together. It takes JD’s secrets to tear them apart. Aurora tells JD everybody leaves. He promises her he never will.

He lied.

Now, JD will do anything, fight anyone, give up everything, to get Aurora back. Aurora said JD broke her heart. Who better than him to put it back together?

But the thing about secrets is that they always come back to haunt you. The question is: How far will JD go to protect the woman he loves before those secrets destroy them all?

Reader’s Warning: That Girl is an enemies-to-lovers, second chance romance with scorching heat that will melt your Kindle and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing what will happen next. It takes place after the conclusion of Broken Butterfly, Fallen Brook Series, Book 3. Even though the book can be read on its own, fans of the Fallen Brook Series will love seeing some of their favorite characters return! That Girl touches upon topics that may be triggering to some readers such as flashbacks to an attempted sexual assault, child neglect and abuse, and violence. The story also contains foul language and sex. Any sexual intimacy between the main characters is consensual. For these reasons, the book is recommended for readers aged 17+.

Aurora & JD is complex & emotional love story. Oh boy hold on to your hats! There is a lot of witty too especially his friends Dustin & Prez soo much they bet with JD making his move on Rory a.k.a Aurora 🤣 They are a comic duo in this book

Now from page 1 I had tears in my eyes because I felt Aurora lose of her best friend Cameron. When she has at his grave I could feel her running her fingers over his name and the flash backs killed me. I wish he was a live !! He was her best friend and I got he was like a protective brother vibe too. Everyone calls her Rory and her friend call her Aurora. I love her soo much she is a strong character especially when we learn why she has a bruised left hand haha She takes no shit at and she like to be invisible but she shines in JD's eyes.
WHAT I LOVE even more Aurora has a surlise in this book in her school years...no spoilers but I will say this she feels safe...no more

JD Jackson Dillion. When she made at JD she calls him Jackson. He is star football player and you feel how passionate he his about his roles. He cares about his team on and off the field and losing Cameron has been a gaint blow. He knows how much Aurora meant to Cameron and Cameron threaten threaten kick his ass if he goes near his best friend 😆 He is basically a good man and he is a Knight in shining armor

With this common best friends that they both lost. Their friendship turns to lovers and thing start to get complex. This is when I get the Romeo & Juliet vibe and his dad is a horrible father !! No spoilers in why...

There is a 5 year gap and I was shocked what I read...I was like WHAT THE HELL HAPPEN AFTER HIGH SCHOOL

That it no more spoilers but I will say this my heart was torn and I won't tell you why!!

By the way did I tell you it's a rollercoater of ride love story 😆❤

He left, he broke the most most important promise he ever made. He knew my past and made the decision to leave. No texts or calls or letters. Nothing. He fell of the face of the earth. Well not really because he’s on my TV playing football and a quarterback in the NFL. Still it would have been nice for him to call. I should have known. I drive people away. In my life, nobody stays. It was a stupid high school love. It wasn’t anything more. Right? It’s been 5 years and I’m over it. I’m dating someone new in a big house with and even bigger family. Things were getting better. I was starting to make lemonade out of the lemons life had obnoxiously thrown at my head. With an abusive sister, an alcohol mother and my best friend who was killed by none other than my alcoholic mother. Then the one good thing in my life disappears. After 5 years he decides to come back with a whole ton of baggage. The baggage that happens to be 5 years old, blonde hair and big blue eyes. JD Halstead is back and is ready to claim me as his. Ha please, buddy lost that privilege years ago. He says he’ll do whatever it takes. But sometimes that’s not enough. “I’m Sorry” can only mean so much and I’m not willing to risk my heart with him again. Life decides to push us together once again and we are forced to spend time together. Suddenly the lines between hate and love are starting to blur.

That Girl is one of my favourites by Jennilynn Wyer So far. You can count on her to throw both you and the characters for a loop. Mrs. Jennilynn is the queen of plot twists and characters with unforgettable back stories.

i was given an arc copy of this book and have chosen to review as follows

So wow just wow, i’m new to the fallen brook series but i will now be reading the others that’s just how good this twisty turny romantic suspenseful novel is.

The book starts out with Aurora or Rory as she is affectionately known, who has just lost her best friend and i suppose saviour the person who she knows when she is in trouble and not just she is in trouble because she got to school/work late but genuine trouble, will be bu her side helping her out.
Rory comes from a poor family her mum is now dead her sister may as well be as at least then aurora would be safe from harm she works to provide the roof over hers and her sisters heads along with attending school so she may be able to better herself and get out of the place she is in when out of the blue Jackson or JD who was her best friends close friend starts talking to her and wants to share in her pain
We then find out how much he has pined for her for years but was unable to act on this due to being warned off by cam who is now dead

I’m trying not too give too much away but JD and Aurora end up not seeing each other for 5 years yet the spark is still there then when they do

The suspenseful parts are finding out where JD was what the secrets are his hiding what the are secrets Rory is hiding

The pentagon ukk ok emotional angst will have you turning page after page wanting to get to the bottom of this mystery and then like me who has not read any of the other books in the montgomery series going and getting the series to read the other story’s

That Girl is hands down the most attention gripping, captivating 2nd chance romance I have ever read. I left writing the review for a couple of days to just ensure that I wasn't on a temporary high and it would evaporate after a couple of days, but no, I still keep re-reading sections over and over, so big is the impression that JD and Aurora have on my heart even now.

Jennilynn Wyer held nothing back in this couple story, it starts of when JD and Aurora are 18 then we jump forward 5 years. In the first half of the story, we get front row seats as we are fully exposed to this young couple's lives, however, be prepared, it is not pretty in places, but that is what makes this a book like no other, it was inspiring to see how strong Auoroa truly was, even if she doesn't truly believe in herself, her unexpected friendship with JD and their growing young relationship was just mesmerising, I will admit I wanted to throw my kindle across the room as the first part came to a close. The book then fast forwards 5 years, and the emotional, absorbing storyline just goes up another gear, if that was at all possible.

My one regret is that I have only now found this author.

Talk about a gripping, rip your heart out, second chance romance that has you crying, smiling and loving, all at the same time. That Girl will throw every emotion at you that you can think of. Jennilynn does not just give you an outstanding story of two souls that you love but has you feeling every heartbreak and happiness that Aurora and JD live through.

Aurora is an 18 year old girl that has had the crappiest life, from abuse by her mother to being abused by her addict sister and her boyfriends. On top of that her best friend and saviour, Cam, was killed in a car accident. The one person she blames seems to be the one that will not leave her alone, JD. She wants to be left alone stay hidden in the background but JD will not let her. Over time she seems to be accepted into his circle of friends but that does not last long. Then she has another thing thrown at her, she has a family that she never knew about, the Montgomery's. Fallon and Trevor explain to her that her father is their father, but how? Why did she not know about it? Then her world shatters as well as her heart. JD breaks his promise and leaves her. On top of dealing with a shattered heart, she is also trying to come back from a life-changing situation. Jump five years and Aurora has barely survived the heartbreak and tries to get on with her life. Does she find love again? What happens when JD returns but has a secret that could break her heart even more?

JD is the hot and loved star of the school's football team and had no problem getting girls, but that is not his game. His life looks perfect on the outside but it is far from it. He lost his friend Cam as well and is hurting. He has always liked Aurora but Cam threatened everyone to stay away from her. JD decides that he needs to tell her the truth about the accident that killed Cam. He does everything that he can to get her to let him into her life and heart. Until one day that shatters both of their lives, he leaves. But why would he just walk away? How could he break the one promise that he said he wouldn't? He made it to the NFL, but is he truly happy? Five years later JD returns and had been keeping secrets. He has not kept in touch with anyone. Why return now? What has changed in his life for him to think now was a good time? Does he want Aurora back? Will his secret keep her away? How can he win her back?

I am never disappointed when I read one of Jennilynn's novels. I have been following her since the new year and with each and every new release I find that the storylines just get better and better. Yes, you will be ugly crying, riding an emotional high and loving the characters. I cannot wait to read her next release.

WOW! This was so much more than I anticipated it would be. These characters stick with you long after you finish this story. There are 4 other books before this one. But the Fallen Brook series is one you NEED on your shelf! I loved Aurora she made me smile so many times throughout. She is the tough but flawed character. She is such an amazing character the way Miss Wyer wrote her character. Onto JD, well lets just say he doesn't know what a great thing he has even if it bit him in the rear! Such a bad good character. I hope that makes sense! Remarkable story and it is such a great addition to the series! GET THIS BOOK!

First thing is I am so happy it was a standalone book lol. I have read so many series where they all leave off with cliffhangers. I love the relationship between Aurora and JD even though they only knew each other as a couple for a short time at first. I did enjoy the plot of the story as it’s not a common theme I’ve read lately. One downside was how annoyed I was at JD for taking forever to just tell the truth!

Wow what a freaking amazing story . Since reading the first book in the series I have been completely hooked . Every time I would finish a book I could not wait to start the next one . But That Girl - was so much more than I anticipated. Aurora goes though so much in her life , my heart truly broke for her .And JD , He’s her everything, he is exactly what she needs in her life . And completely swoony . Their are so many twists and turns , so much emotion and raw moments . What a fantastic story true perfection. JENNILYNN knows exactly how to grab onto you from the very start and does not let go . After finishing every book in the series I was left wanting so much more . Do not miss this series .

A plot and layout of storyline I did not expect and really enjoyed. So happy this is a series so I am definitely going to be diving in.
Two completely different people in there wild young days fall for one another, are happy and wanting a future. However, a choice has to be made and this creates a cataclysmic explosion of events to happen. Lies and secrets, betrayal for all the right reasons. Love, chemistry and hot reunions.
Loved it.

Loved reading That Girl it will not be my last. That Girl is an emotional story that brought me to tears. Aurora has been through so much in her life and after the death of her mother and best friend she receives shocking news that she never would've expected that changed her life. Aurora and JD's story was full of struggles that ended in tears. Aurora tried to move forward and even had a boyfriend but when a blast from the past comes back into her life she has to face some hard truths. This book is incredible. I wanted more of these two. Even though this is book 4 in the series, its a standalone and I didn't feel lost reading it. I can't wait to read the other books in the series.

2 STARS

I'll keep this short and to the point. The blurb to this hooked me immediately. I'm a sucker for these sort of stories. Girl from the wrong side of the tracks. Football star and popular boy. A betrayal. A second chance romance. It had all of the ingredients with the perfect recipe. Unfortunately, the execution is where this lost me. I find the pacing to be all over the place. The time jumps to highlight continuity problems. The character development was lackluster so I barely connected to either of the MC's; particularly JD. There was just no depth to him. Nothing to really grab my attention. But this still would have been a solid 3 stars...if not for the last 30% of the book. The ultimate twist was just so ridiculous, that I couldn't move past it. The reason JD stayed away was just more drama that I can bear in my books. Now if you like OTT drama, this may just be the book for you. But I have limits to my OTT drama and this particular one is where my line happens to be. Sadly it just didn't work for me. It read like a great draft, but as a finished book, I suppose my expectations were higher. Did I hate it? No. Did I like it? Also no. I think this is one of those books that you'd either really enjoy or you wouldn't. I just happened to fall in the later category. But give it a read and see for yourself. You just may love it

Now it was a really really good book. Aurora literally that girl endured so much but I really admired her. JD and Aurora together were good. Overall this was an incredible story that draws in you and tugs at your heart. This was a re-read for me and I enjoyed it this time just as much as I did the first time. The characters had their own things to overcome to reach their happy ending.

I really loved this book. Aurora is a strong female and her grit and determination are some of the reasons I fell in love with her. It's tough when she goes through JD's absence but the rollercoaster story and emotional drama was what made this story a 5 star read for me. It's an easy to follow story but has enough conflict and drama to keep your attention! I was sent a complimentary copy and I am choosing to leave my honest review.

I received an advanced copy of That Girl in exchange for an honest review.

I DEVOURED ‘That Girl’ like I have rarely done with another book. Wyer delivered a gripping, beautifully written story, while touching on tough topics with grace. ‘That Girl’ gave me every emotion, and I was ultimately given the much desired HEA.

Aurora and JD were made for one another, and the friends and family that they have included in their circle compliments them so well. Wyer’s characters are so well written that it’s easy to imagine yourself there, loving the events by their sides.

This was the first book I’ve read by Wyer, but it will not be the last.

I loved how the characters from Fallen Brook series, especially Trevor and Fallon are very prominent in this book. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

That Girl - Montgomery Series (Book 1)

“Everybody Leaves.”

A simple sentence that is all-too-familiar for Aurora St. Claire.

If anybody has been dealt a shitty hand of cards in the family department, it’s Aurora St. Claire. She was “That Girl!” Growing up on the wrong side of town, with an alcoholic mother, an abusive sister and poor, was not always easy. Aurora is intelligent, beautiful and tough as nails because she’s always had to look after herself. After the death of her best friend Cameron, she was officially all alone.

JD Hallstead was “That Boy!” From the outside, he is the boy who looks like he has it all. Lives in the “nice side of town,” football quarterback heading to the NFL and Mr Popular. What people don’t see, is the controlling and abusive father living behind closed doors.

At the age of eighteen, a secret comes to fruition. Suddenly, Aurora learns what it’s like to be part of a real “family.” However unconventional the whole situation may be, she quickly learns, she has a family that loves her. “Trevor and I will always fight for you. That’s what family is for.”

Out of nowhere, Hurricane JD comes barrelling into Aurora’s life. As they spend time together, feelings start to grow which has them falling head over heels in love! They were once inseparable, until one day, it all came to a stop. JD leaves town without a call, without an explanation, without a goodbye and taking a huge secret with him. Breaking Aurora’s heart in the process. “Everybody Leaves.”

Five years later it’s safe to return. JD comes back to claim the only woman he’s ever loved. Bringing with him more than a few secrets! Will he finally tell her why he left? Will Aurora be able to forgive JD? One thing is for sure, JD is back to stay and the end game is Aurora. “You and me, sunshine. We’re happening. Get ready for it. No more running, for either of us. “

Jennilynn Wyer once again uses her magical pen on the unsuspecting paper and takes us on a roller coaster ride of loss, love, secrets, friends and family relationships. We are also reminded, “Sometimes the best families are the ones you create, not the ones you’re born into.”

“That Girl” is a Contemporary Romance Writers 2021 Stiletto Finalist and a Chesapeake Romance Writers 2921 Rudy Finalist for a reason. The reason is because “That Girl” is simply “That Amazing!” Happy Reading! 🥰

This is a re-read for me and as much as I loved it the first time, I loved it just as much and maybe even more the second time. This was the very first book of Jennilynn’s that I read and loved being able to re-read it.

It had just the right amount of heart and emotion and mystery. Aurora is a girl you want to route for. One that has been handed a lot of blows but keeps fighting. We all love a good wrong side of the tracks type of love story but it hits different when it’s the FMC that is from the wrong side of the tracks. This story is a second chance and to really get the second half of Aurora and JD’s love story you need to read their beginning. The first half of their story is the beginning and details all the very important things that brought them together and hints to what tore them apart.

In Aurora’s world everyone leaves. So five years after JD breaks her heart we learn why. There are several surprises and shocks that happen and twists some readers will not see coming. It wouldn’t be a Jennilynn Wyer book without a few jaw dropping unexpected moments.

The things I really loved were their shared grief for the loss of Aurora’s best friend Cam. With Cam being JD’s teamate on the football field, Aurora was off limits. But the hopeless crush and being secretly in love with her was amazing. He knew he had to take that chance and win her over. A lot happens to Aurora and big life changes happen to her and they all happen at the same time that JD makes his move on winning the girl he has loved from afar.

The time jump that happens in the middle for me plays out flawlessly and I was able to just jump right into reading how JD wins his girl back. Aurora is not the same girl he was forced to leave and he isn’t the same either. But they are still meant to be and still perfect for each other. It also has an amazing found family vibe and that same vibe is something you get is every one of Jennilynn’s books.

Jennilynn never disappoints. I jumped into this as soon as I could, and it was fun to see some of the gang from the Fallen Brook series. Aurora’s life has been hard. Her best friend was killed in a car accident by her mom, and her life spiraled. Her protector is gone, but while he was her best friend, he also isolated her from the world and kept her to himself.

JD promised Aurora the world, and always wanted her. He only stayed away because that’s what Cam wanted. Now he’s gone and he’s playing for keeps. But what happens when for keeps isn’t forever ? What happens when the choice isn’t yours and you leave the woman you claim to li r broken?

Their love story is hard and fast, but hurts because lies are told, hearts are broken, and the people that are supposed to protect you didn’t. I really loved JD and Aurora’s story and I can’t wait to read the other siblings stories.

Trigger warning: attempted sexual assault and child neglect and abuse.

This book will suck in you from the very first page.

Aurora is from the "poor" side of town. She has had a horrible upbringing and just wants to get through high school and go off to college. Her best friend died a couple of months ago, and she has felt lost ever since. JD is the school QB and the most popular guy in school. Every guy wants to be him, and every girl wants to date him. He has had a crush on Aurora for years, and now is he finally making his move.

JD and Aurora fall hard and fall fast. They go from 0 to 60 very quickly. She fits right in with his group and friends and they instantly accept her as one of their own. Aurora finally has the family that she has always wanted. But all of that changes with JD disappears on night, and she never sees him again.

Fast forward 5 years later, and JD is back and ready to win his girl over again. This was a great second chance romance. Aurora is conflicted that JD is back and does not forgive him easily. Yes she is attracted to him, but she has moved on, or is trying to move on. But, nothing can keep you from your first and only love. JD will not give up on Aurora and will do whatever it takes to get her back. Their emotional connection is very strong, and they are completely real with each other. They are able to be open and honest with each other like they can't with anyone else.

The reason why JD left was a bit too much for me. Does he Dad really have those types of connections? And why did Aurora not search the country for him?

I've always been a fan of second chance romances. Nothing else compares to their heart wrenching angst and tender moments of finding each other again. They may be my favorite type of books in the romance genre - which says a lot as someone who reads more than my fair share. The idea that love can persevere is one I find infinitely fascinating as a reader.

That Girl by Jennilynn Wyer is a second chance romance in every defining sense. It follows the ups and downs of Aurora and JD's relationships, one initially built on shaky ground. The time jump demonstrates the rift between the two while laying the foundation for a stronger bond to come. The reader can't help but be mesmerized by the tumultuous nature of JD and Aurora's relationship in the beginning and their journey back to one another.

Jennilynn Wyer lays out exposition in an attention-grabbing way. It never feels like the author is mindlessly telling you what is happening, but rather guiding you through the plot with an expert hand. She details not only JD and Aurora's relationship, filled with intense passion, but their stories outside one another with the same care. The first defined part feels as well handled as the later parts.

I only made it to page 27 and let me tell you why this bums me the fuck out because I can sense that if this author had an editor, this would have been an amazing book. The premise is really intriguing and there is something about the writing style that is soooo close to being wonderful…but it’s just not quite there. Thus, I have to stop reading it before I smash my kindle against a wall.

So far in these mere 27 pages, I’ve highlighted about 6 separate mistakes. From bad or just plain wrong phrasing, to illogical plot points, to time jumps and continuity errors. It’s only muthafuckin page 27!!!!!

I gave up when the FMC had just sat down in class and then a strange man in a suit just shows up at the door to which NO QUESTIONS ASKED the teacher sends her off with this stranger. So without even a word (doesn’t she even want to ask who da fuq he is?!?) they walk towards the principal’s office and the man in the suit just disappears from the page as another mystery man is suddenly there and the principal just leaves her alone with a stranger. They then proceed to have a 2 min convo, he leaves, and BAM the bell is ringing and the period is over!! (See my note for all the red flags this scene raises)

I just fucking can’t anymore.

Let me say this - I LOVE the idea of Indie authors self-publishing. I LOVE that more writers are getting the opportunity to put their work out into the world.

BUT at the same time, there is now NO GATEKEEPER FOR QUALITY. No professionals guiding amateur writers to help them hone their hobby into a craft. NO FUCKING LEGIT EDITING anymore. And I’m exhausted of reading through half baked ideas, grammatically incorrect nonsense, dumb as fuck continuity errors and illogical plotting because there is no oversight / structure / expertise guiding the newbies now that any and everyone can publish.

Indie authors - PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HIRE LEGIT EDITORS who are trained to guide you and have worked in the industry for awhile. Make sure your alpha and beta readers are not YES WOMEN who won’t give you honest feedback, AND please be open to criticism from readers - because we’ll be honest when others working in this new world of self-publishing may not be as forthcoming.

I WANT TO READ YOUR WORK! I want to support Indie authors braving this new world outside of the traditional avenues. But writing is supposed to be an ART FORM, NOT just a means to make a quick buck. I can’t slog through any more sub-par work laden with needless and preventable errors, when it DOES NOT NEED to be released into the world at this stage.

PPPLLLLEEEEAAASSSEEEEE —->Take the time to perfect your writing instead of rushing to release it. It’ll be win-win for everyone - a better reading experience for us readers AND your sales will be higher.

The story fell a little flat for me near the end, even with all of the drama added into it, but overall it was a fun read. There are side characters that I'm interested in finding out more from too so I'll be back to this series for sure.

I thought That Girl was really good it would be the first book that I've read by Jennilynn Wyer and it can be read as a standalone . I thought the characters were interesting they did frustrate me a bit with how they handle things by over all they story had me along with the characters . My heart really broke for the couple they went through so much pain and betrayal that I didn't know how this was going to end . I can't wait to read more by the they author and to read more about the secondary characters .

This book was definitely a page turner. This is JD and Aurora’s second chance at love. These two have opposite upbringings, but fall completely in love with each other and promise to never leave one another, but, one day at the end of their final year, he is gone, and he leaves an array of devastating effects on the people who cares about him the most. But, it’s time, and he’s coming back for his girl. Nothing is going to get in his way.

There was so much twist and turns in their story. There are characters I’m understanding that goes with the previous books but I found it easy to understand. I’m hoping for some of the supporting characters getting their own story. But, I love how everyone rallied for Aurora and her happiness. JD and Aurora’s love for each other never went away.

This book had a lot of moving parts. I was confused with the genre or theme of this book. Was it a contemporary sports romance, second-chance romance, mafia-related, trauma, or could it even be a love triangle theme... the list goes on. JD is the love of her life, but she has about 4 other guys who are her best friends that hold her hand and kiss her cheek, and they are all single as well. The whole story why JD left was confusing and it took too long to unravel the truth. However, his abrupt leaving of his friends and Aurora was a good cliffhanger. Why did he leave and never contact them. That was fun to predict along the way while reading. However, I was getting impatient. She didn't hate him too long or make him work for it when he returns. Also why wouldn't Preston be more angry with him, if he slept with his girlfriend before he dates Aurora. Like I said... too many storylines happening at once in this book. So many facets or levels. I didn't read the Fallen Series before I read this book. I think I should have. A lot of names were dropped in this book and I couldn't keep track of all them and their connections to each other. It just seems like all these men fall at her feet, do anything for her. She kind of annoyed me. However, I enjoyed JD's character. Hearing his perspective was fun to read.
