During the Covid-19 pandemic, the parks have offered a much needed respite and the great outdoors have never been more popular. This coffee table book / travel guide provides a curated selection with a slightly different perspective. The "great American parks" include national parks, of course, but 33 state, recreational, and city parks have been highlighted as well. Photos display the parks' splendor and also ideas for those who want more activity than just gazing with appreciation. The accompanying text touches upon the lesser known histories such as the indigenous peoples who were pushed out by European settlers.

I was provided a sample that only had 10 pages, 2 of which were the front and back covers. I saw snippets about the following parks: Yosemite National Park (CA), Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness (ID), Cape Cod National Seashore (MA), Central Park (NY), and the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail (AL). Given that this book is expected to be printed with 400 pages, my sample is too slight for me to give an unreserved endorsement despite its potential of meriting 5 stars.

Thank you to National Geographic and Netgalley for providing me with a digital sample ARC in exchange for an honest review. This review is based upon an uncorrected proof (ISBN 978-1-4262-2200-9). Publication date is May 10, 2022.

100 Great American Parks is what looks to be an informative photographic, coffee table book with lots of interesting information about Americas most famous national parks including 33 of the countries recreational, state and inner city parks aswell.
I received a 10 page sampler of this book and it have a small taste as to what was to come in the book. Each two page spread consisted of a photograph and information about the park. The parks I saw snippets of were the Yosemite National Park, Frank Church River of no return wilderness, Cape cod, Central Park, and the Selma to Montgomery National Historic trail. This book is to be pr8nted at a volume of 400 pages so a 10 page sampler was a very small sample to give a lengthy review on.

Interesting - This book covers all 63 of our National Parks along with 37 other national monuments, seashores, trails, etc. that were completely subjective. For each park there is the name of the park, the state / territory where it is located, a brief essay telling about the park and its history, some color photos, and a few facts (size of park in square miles (kilometers), best time to go, year established, and in-park accommodations). I'm still trying to figure out where the lodges (plural) are for Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which is practically in my backyard!

Some interesting entries: Frank Church of No Return Wilderness in Idaho; Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in Montana; War in the Pacific National Historic Park on Guam; Pearl Harbor National Memorial in Hawaii - If you get the chance to see this, go! Other sites include: Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historic Park, which was established in 2017 in Maryland; Central Park in New York City; Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania; New River Gorge National Park & Preserve in West Virginia, which received its designation in 2020 - I had no idea! Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail in Alabama; Buffalo National River in Arkansas; Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa.

While what I received was only a sampling of the written material and pictures of many US National Parks, it gave a decent illustration of what will be available in the full book. It's a nice overview and definitely intriguing for someone like me who loves the outdoors. It appeared well put together and the exposition was lovely and informative.

The book wasn't simply scenic landscape photographs with some writing that documented a park’s existence. Rather, there was much history to be gleaned from each park that was highlighted. For example, the displacement of the native Tuka Deka Indians who occupied the area within what has become Frank Church River of No Return in Idaho and the Selma to Montgomery Historic Trail which was protected to immortalize Martin Luther King's iconic walk for civil rights.

I love the outdoors and I’m thankful that I live in one of the most beautiful areas in the Pacific Northwest where I'm minutes away from both the Cascade Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean. While the PNW wasn't included in this sample, National Geographic and Stephanie Pearson did a great job of reminding me of the costs made throughout history and why we get to enjoy all of our National Parks.

Based on everything I saw in this sampling, I intend to acquire my own copy of 100 Great American Parks.

When National Geographic presents a new parks coffee-table book, I've come to expect great pictures of both Mother Nature and humans interacting with her. In that regard, this book doesn't dissappoint; there are stunning nature photos that fill my stuck-at-home heart, and inviting pictures of people inhabiting those parks—whetting my appetite to get back out there and experience the nation and its wonder. The book's organization into five interesting and specific sections will make for a great thumbing experience, as readers search for both the familiar and the new.

One thing that makes 100 GREAT AMERICAN PARKS a stand out, though, is the poignant and historical content of both national and state parks which capture unforgettable moments in our collective memory. These offerings fill the heart with awe and wonder. For example, I devoured the piece on Kennedy's beloved Cape Cod, loved the show and explanation of pristinely preserved rivers protected by Johnson's Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, and was pleased to see even a bridge made famous by determined and brave peaceful protestors, a bridge which is connected with one of the most important movements causing change in the 20th century. With the promise that every state is represented within the pages, this new offering is not to miss.

Thank you for digital portions of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The parks featured in this book are broken up by region and then even further by state. A brief history and description of the park is provided, along with helpful information like the best time to visit and whether there are any accommodations within the park.

The review copy I received only contains 4% of the book, but it has great information and beautiful photos. I’m looking forward to the rest of the book.

The photos in this book are absolutely gorgeous! And it’s not just National Parks that grace these pages. The parks are arranged in groups of geographic regions throughout the USA, with brief descriptions and seasonal availability for accommodations. The book would be a worthwhile purchase for nature lovers.

I seem to have the same issue other people had: samples I get, but ten pages? It’s a mere step above judging a book by its cover.

What I could see looks marvelous. I’m a huge fan of photography books, and the topic at hand—American parks!—intrigues me. The Cape Cod lighthouse is a thing of beauty, same with the Yosemite picture, say. The writing style seems informative and easy to read too.

I’m sure the entire book or even a decent-size sample is worth five stars. As it is, I can’t give it more than two and a half, rounded up to three.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

100 Great American Parks by Stephanie Pearson is a coffee-table photobook by National Geographic that includes stunning photos and essays about American parks. Some of the essays included in the excerpt I was sent include "Yosemite National Park," "Cape Cod National Seashore" and "Central Park." According to the synopsis, this book " takes readers to all 63 national parks, as well as 37 state, recreational, and city parks and green spaces." It also includes travel tips and the words of experts for park enthusiasts.

Overall, 100 Great American Parks is a photo-book that will appeal to travel enthusiasts and photographers alike. One highlight of this book are the stunning photos of national parks, which include one-page spreads. They are beautiful and worth the price of the book alone. I can see this book being the perfect gift for the nature-lover or travel enthusiast in your life, especially if they've always wanted to see the sights of America. If you're intrigued by the description, or if you're a fan of books about travel, I highly recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in May!

The new National Geographic book, 100 Great American Parks by Stephanie Pearson, has everything you’ve come to expect in a National Geographic book. It has awe inspiring beautiful pictures of the parks. There are 100 parks in this book including all 63 national parks. The foreword is by Garth Brooks discussing his travels as a touring musician and is very inspiring. The introduction is full of interesting facts including that Boston Common was the first park in the United States in 1634 put in place as a space to graze cows. Until 1817, a tree was used in the center for public hanging. It has seen a lot of change over time. Yellowstone National Park was the first national park in the world. The U.S. Park Service was established in 1916 to manage 420 units across 85 million acres.

The book is split into five parts. It starts with “The West and the Pacific” and has a wonderful section about the Grand Canyon National Park describing it with both words and fantastic pictures. The White Sands National Park pictures brought back some happy memories of a trip there in college. Part two is “Off the Mainland.” The stunning pictures really made me want to visit Alaska and Hawaii even more. Part three is “the East and mid-Atlantic.” It gave me a new idea to try to look for the “Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historic Park” while we are in Maryland next month. It made me excited about some places already on our list for our trip such as George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Part four is “the south. I found out that Arkansas had the first National River, the Buffalo National River. It looks beautiful. Part five is “the Midwest & Plains.” My only complaint is this section is very scant. As a lifetime Midwesterner, there are a lot more beautiful parks here than represented. The only park from Michigan was Isle Royale National Park and the only park from Wisconsin was the Apostle Island National Lakeshore. Meanwhile western states like California had ten parks included.

The last section of the book is a great list on how to protect our parks.

Favorite Quote:
“We all need a space to feel free.”

Overall, 100 Great American Parks is a beautiful coffee table book to remember great places you’ve explored, plan ahead for new places to visit, or to “travel” from your own home through the wonderful pictures.

Delving into the sampler of Stephanie Pearson's "100 Great American Parks" was akin to embarking on a visual odyssey through the heart of America's most treasured landscapes. As a devoted photography enthusiast, this glimpse into National Geographic's upcoming masterpiece left me awe-inspired, eagerly anticipating the complete exploration of these natural wonders.

While this sampler is but a teaser, it masterfully encapsulates the unparalleled beauty and diversity that awaits within the full book. National Geographic, true to its legacy, has curated a collection that goes beyond a mere travel guide—it's a celebration of America's cultural DNA, a testament to the breathtaking landscapes that define the nation's park system.

The stunning photography is, without a doubt, the highlight. Each image is a canvas that vividly paints the unique character of the parks—from the majestic mountain peaks of the Tetons to the constantly erupting volcanoes in Hawaii, and from the crystal-clad underworld of Carlsbad Caverns to the steamy swamps and mangrove forests of the deep South. The visuals are not just snapshots; they are windows into the soul of each park, capturing the essence of its landscapes, wildlife, and remarkable histories.

The diversity showcased in this collection is as expansive as the parks themselves. From bustling cities like New York with its Central Park gem to the secluded wonders of Yosemite and Sequoia, each destination beckons with its own charm. This sampler doesn't just inspire wanderlust; it instills a profound appreciation for the conservation and exploration of these natural open spaces.

As Garth Brooks, the legendary recording artist, aptly notes in the foreword, these parks represent the greatest experiences the world has to offer. Each entry in this captivating volume not only explores the landscapes and wildlife but also serves as a call to conserve these wonders for future generations.

In sum, "100 Great American Parks" is a captivating journey that promises not just travel information but an immersive experience. This innovative guide, adorned with National Geographic's hallmark photography, invites readers to connect with the unparalleled beauty that defines America's park system.

HOLD THE PHONE- This was just a sample but WHOA! (Kinda mad that I got invested in some of the descriptions and they're cut off- give me more please! )

The photography is STUNNING and breathtaking. The book layout is grouped by geographical location, which I found to actually be brilliant- instead of being clumped alphabetically by state or name. If you live (or are planning to visit) a specific area, finding a park would be a breeze. Each park lists the state you'll find it in and a rich description of its history and how it was founded/named/formed. What I also found extremely cool was that there is a snippet of park information that helps maximize your visit- such as: size, best time to go, year established, and the in-park accommodations (if there is lodging, camping, etc). Another feature I thought was a great addition was info on if the park is known for a landmark, or unique wildlife sightings. I'd love to visit a park that offers its own unique flora and fauna and actually KNOW what to look for.

Initially I thought this was a coffee-table type book where it gave some brief details on the parks while showcasing these gorgeous landscape photos but it was SO much more. Very educational and informative- and the layout screams 'VISIT ME, BECAUSE' to its readers by making everything accessible and easy-to-use.

I've already added this to my wishlist and I DESPERATELY hope my family orders me a copy! I will definitely recommend this to anyone who is interested in traveling and exploring our beautiful country!

Advance read copy was only a 20 page sample (only 5 parks) of the book. Book looks to be a coffee table hardcopy with many beautiful glossy pictures; at least that is the electronic edition perception.

I love traveling and am always looking for new places to visit and want the inside scoop to make the most of a visit.

The pictures included as part of the 20 pages were very beautiful.

Honestly rather disappointed that only 5 parks were included in the advance read copy edition. Really there wasn't enough content provided to adequately review this book.
2 of 5 parks were very expected.
2 of 5 parks were obscure ones that I was not familiar; although the description provided does not entice me to add to my bucket list.
1 remaining park was not something I would consider to be a park; although I can see how it would be considered a park.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author Stephanie Pearson and the publisher/National Geographic for the opportunity to read the 20 page advance read copy in exchange for an honest review. There isn't enough content to entice me to purchase the book. Publication date is expected to be 10 May 2022.

Note: This review is based on an ARC sample of the book, and not the entire book. Had I been able to view the whole book, my rating could easily have become 5 stars.

This book has all the earmarks of quality that have come to be the norm for National Geographic. Stunning pictures accompanied by interesting information make this an enjoyable read. All of the 63 National Parks are featured, and the book is rounded out by 37 state or city parks, recreational areas, and green spaces.

If you're planning a trip, the book has information on park size, lodging options, and highlights to include in your visit which would prove helpful. Even if you're just enjoying the view from your armchair, this is a book that will stir you with the beauty to be found within our borders.

A great gift idea for yourself or others who enjoy art/photography/travel coffee-table books.

My thanks to National Geographic for allowing me to peruse an ARC sample of the book via NetGalley. The book is scheduled to be published on 5/10/22. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and are given freely.

This beautiful book is filled with exactly the sort of gorgeous photographs one might expect from National Geographic. This 400-page book provides an overview of 100 parks throughout all fifty states, including all 63 National Parks, as well as 37 state, recreational, and city parks and green spaces. The text is organized into five geographic regions. Each park’s entry includes the state where it's located, its size, the best time of year to visit, when it was established, and any accommodations, as well as a brief narrative of the park’s history and significance, and of course, photographs.

Based on the brief sample I was provided, I don’t think the text is detailed enough to function as a travel guide, but this is a nice survey of the nation’s parks.

At roughly 9 by 9 inches, this hardcover book is smaller than most coffee table books. However, I’ve found that I like this size; it's easier to hold than a larger book.

Thanks to National Geographic for providing me with an unproofed ARC sample through NetGalley.

A great book to give readers the traveling itch and hit the road!

If you love to travel, and visit national parks in particular, this book is a must for you. This book selects 100 of the best National Parks throughout American with a glimpse into each one. The book is organized around different regions, so if you live in a particular area or just want to travel there, you can skip to that section and find out what parks are available by state (or territory) and get your travel list in order.

I love that this makes it easy and fun to get the travel bug. I’ve been to some of these parks, but there are still so many more to go. Just yesterday we hit up Sleeping Bear Dunes in Michigan and I can’t wait to see what else we can see. With amazing pictures and history of the parks, it makes it fun to just read about and plan your visit.

I recommend this book to travelers and those who just love a good book on travel for reference.

I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.

What a lovely book! This book is exactly what you'd expect from a National Geographic published work. America is full of beautiful public spaces, including the National Parks of course, but there are a plethora of amazing parks across the nation that are state, county, and city parks as well. This book features a unique combination of the beauty found in the various types of parks and public spaces found across America. Beautiful photographs, fun facts, and informational essays detail each park space. 100 Great American Parks is organized into 5 regions for the reader's convenience. It is the perfect coffee table book (great gift book) or perhaps for a waiting room. Based on what the sample of this book that was provided to me, I would definitely recommend it!

Stunning photographs and interesting facts about the national parks (and a few state parks and recreation areas) make this book a great resource for traveling within the National Park Service. All 63 parks are to be highlighted with planning information such as lodging options and the size of the park.

* Note: review is based on a sample copy with very few pages making it somewhat difficult to give a full review. However, what I did get was enough to see that 1) the photographs will be amazing 2) the facts about the park will offer history and hints and 3) that it will be a very good guide to the parks that I will definitely purchase.

100 Great American Parks is a nice overview of nice parks in the US.
I really like how along the amazing photos, the authors have added both information about the native species of flora and fauna, but also important historic notes when applicable. With the added info of "best time to visit" and overall info on accommodations and what attracts people there, it can be a great "what should I visit?" guide for nature lovers and tourists.
I'd definitely recommend checking out the book and if you like it and it fits your personal library, to get it in print, as I'm sure these photos look even better printed.

This is another wonderful book by National Geographic. There are five sections to this book. It divides the USA into geographical areas. (The West and the Pacific, Off the Mainland, The East and Mid-Atlantic, The South, and the Midwest and the Plains). As expected, the photography is superb. There is a one or two page description of the park and what to see there. You really can never go wrong with National Geographic books. This would be a great book for a bucket list reference as well as those who want to see as many of our National Parks as they can. This would be a great book for campers, RVer's and those who want to explore the great outdoors.

I would like to thank the author, National Geographic and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is both an informational as well as a beautiful book on our Nation's parks.

Stephanie provides a short commentary on each park showcased in this book which includes historical references, quick tips and areas you shouldn't miss. Pertinent information for the park visitor: size of park, year established, best time to visit and if in-park accommodations are offered are highlighted for each park. Gorgeous photographs complete the full package.

A beautiful coffee table book, yet will be used by many once it becomes available May of 2022. I look forward to getting a copy of the hardback version for our home.

Beautiful photos and layout. However not a lot of detail, just a quick overview of the history of the park. Think coffee table book vs guide book.

What attracts me most to this book is the parks given recognition aren’t your typical famous National Parks. More unique dives, however you’ll have to do a majority of the legwork yourself if you want more than a Cliff’s Notes synopsis.

Most parks are given 2-4 pages total, half photos and half written descriptions. Again- gorgeously laid out photographs, with a short synopsis of the park.

Oh how I wish I could give this a better review. However I only received a partial preview to review for NetGalley so I hope the full book is as good as the preview.

This is an amazing book with wonderful pictures of our national parks plus more. I especially enjoyed the information given that told me the need to know travel information, wildlife spotting tips and histories of the parks. The only problem I had with this book was that I only saw a sample of the book. I would definitely think that anyone who likes to explore our national parks should have this book as a starting point to what one should not miss. It is a one-of-a kind book. Even if you don’t go camping, the book gives you fantastic scenes with incredible information.

This is another beautiful sample from National Geographic. I was excited to see and read this book as our country is filled with beautiful places, many of which only locals are aware of. This was a good glimpse into what promises to be a fun book. It would be a great book to have in the classroom when studying the various states and the different landscapes of the country. The pictures are gorgeous and the information is interesting.

This is a brief, 10 page, preview of 100 American public parks, 63 national parks and 37 state, city and other parks. The pictures are stunning and the descriptions are appealing. There's historial information and wildlife info the book, as well. If the full version is anywhere near as beautiful as this preview, it will be a hit and a bestseller for sure! I'm pretty sure this one will be on my shelf in May 2022 after it's published. This would be the perfect gift for a graduate or anyone you love. Thank you, NetGalley and National Geographic for the ARC and the opportunity to review. Note: this was a preview copy, not the full book...but it was still great!
