An Ella Shane Mystery #3

A Fatal Overture

Rate this book
During the first winter of the twentieth century, Gilded Age trouser diva Ella Shane refuses to dim the lights on her dazzling show business career for marriage—even to a dashing British duke. But the versatile mezzo-soprano may have to put it all on the line once murder takes centerstage . . .

New York City, 1900. Renowned opera singer and theatre company owner Ella may have both much to gain and much to lose by getting engaged to her courtly long-distance love, Gil Saint Auburn. But there’s little time for romance or resolutions with Gil’s aristocratic mother and aunts visiting Greenwich Village—especially when the ladies discover a dead man in the bathtub of their hotel suite.

The victim’s disturbing background and subsequent demise at the elegant Waverly Place Hotel leave the group puzzled beyond the obvious certainty of an unnatural death. Adding to the confusion and mounting fear, danger explodes through Ella’s close-knit circle after a friend makes a stunning confession and Gil becomes a fresh target for violence.

Now, with a London tour run fast approaching, prenuptial worries weighing heavily on her heart, and an intricate Joan of Arc aria to rehearse, can Ella decide what she’s willing to sacrifice before confronting a relentless criminal bent on watching her entire life go up in smoke?

Kathleen Marple Kalb grew up in front of a microphone and a keyboard. She started her radio career as a teenage DJ at a small station in her hometown of Brookville, Pennsylvania, and despite a brief flirtation with advanced study in history before taking her B.A. at the University of Pittsburgh (her mother will never forgive her for turning down an assistantship at William and Mary), worked her way up through newsrooms in Pittsburgh, Vermont and Connecticut, to New York. But she never wore her Phi Beta Kappa key again after her first day at KDKA, when she accidentally hung up on a U.S. Senator. Her broadcast career went significantly better after that, including a number of regional Edward R. Murrow awards in Vermont, and her current post as a weekend morning anchor at 1010 WINS, New York’s top all-news station.
At age sixteen, she wrote her first historical novel, which thankfully did not find a publisher, though a couple of editors did actually read it. While she writes reams of news copy at work, fiction was firmly in the past until her son started kindergarten, when she decided to take another try. She lives in Connecticut with her husband, a fellow journalist and professor, their young son, a neurotic cat, and many, many boxes of Legos.

Ella Shane is surprised by the visit of three doughty older women, who are mother and aunts to the man she loves, and soon to be her fiancé. She and he then spend several days trying to sort out responsibilities and the like for their marriage contract so that Ella does not have to give up her performing and profits. And, incidentally, there is a murder and attempted murder, but these are really just the backdrop to meeting a variety of Ella’s large family, eating tasty meals, worrying how to replace her friend and highly skilled cook, changing into pretty clothes, and having all her male friends and relatives tell her she should be happy Gil is willing to let her continue to work after their marriage. And that only love matters.

I was so fed up by everyone telling her the same thing, repeatedly. I know it’s the Gilded Age and it’s truly a wonder that a man would consent to his wife having a life outside of his own, but it got super repetitive and irritating that everyone told Ella the same thing.

And the clues to the murder and attempted murder were easy to see, and no sleuthing was happening, except by people off-page.

I’m not sure if I’ll read anymore in this series.

Thank you to Netgalley and to Kensington Books for this ARC in exchange for my review.

I pre-ordered this book because it is the third in a series and I loved the first two books. I was thrilled when it arrived in my Kindle and, upon reading it, found it even better than the others. “A Fatal Overture” is a romantic, fast paced, suspenseful mystery in true Ella Shane fashion. As with the other books, it is wonderfully written as author Kathleen Marple Kalb continues to give the reader another exciting page-turner.

Along with the romance, I appreciated the reminder of the lack of women’s rights that is intertwined in the story. At the turn of the century in which these mysteries take place, by law a woman became the property of their husbands, something that greatly troubles opera singer Ella Shane. As a highly successful performer and company owner, she is a woman in her own right and struggles with the idea of possibly having to give up everything for the man she loves. This theme is present throughout all three books but comes to a head in this third novel when she and her duke tangle over a marriage contract. Continuing pressure from friends and possible future in-laws only make things worse. There is also the unfair treatment of young maids who fall victim to employer predators. Could this have led to that dead body found in a hotel bathtub?

“A Fatal Overture” has it all and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I highly recommend it to all readers.

Diva Ella Shane is thrown into another murder mystery when her beau's mother and two aunts cross the ocean to make her acquaintance. The owner of the hotel where they are staying is found murdered in their suite and Ella's friend, a journalist posing as a maid, claims that she murdered the man when he was making unwanted advances. Ella knows that her friend is lying to protect some poor innocent victim and does her best to convince her friend to tell the truth. Meanwhile, Ella and Gil, her British duke, have become secretly engaged and are working out a legal document regarding their future. Determined to keep her freedom as a well-known opera singer, Ella insists on having the right to one more annual engagement in the U. S. than Gil will agree to. Will this impasse stand in the way of their future as a married couple? A delightful addition to this series abounding with charming characters that offers a bird's eye view of the New York Gilded Age.

This was a new series to me and an overall enjoyable, if predictable read.

I was surprised that the mystery seemed to be more of a subplot. While others investigated the murder, Ella and Gil's engagement and the hashing out of the marriage contract took center stage. Ella is an opera singer who will not marry Gil unless she can keep some part of her career. His mother and aunts arrive to smooth the preparations and prod the two to the alter.

Meanwhile, a murder and another attempted murder occur at the opera house and Ella is somewhat entangled in the investigation. Since the book was hyped as the third in a mystery series, I did expect the murder investigation to play more of a central role in the novel but it really did not. It was also easily predictable.

All in all, this makes an easy rainy day read, but I'm not sure I'll be reading more of the series.

Wow! This book is so good! It is oh so cozy-mysterious, witty, full of twists and turns, romantic, thought-provoking, and so much more! Whenever I picked up "A Fatal Overture", I was whisked away to the Gilded Age, and went on quite the adventure with this story.

This series is truly one of my favorite cozy-mystery series! I love the mix of opera, history, romance, and mystery...and I find each book impossible to put down!

This is the third book in Kathleen Marple Kalb's "An Ella Shane Mystery" series...and oh I LOVE this series! Ms. Kalb brilliantly brings the past to life before the reader's eyes, and each moment throughout the book is viscerally and vividly detailed. I could envision each scene, and Ms. Kalb does an incredible job of character development...both in characters from previous books, as well as new ones. Each piece of the puzzle of the mystery is revealed to the reader in exactly the moment it needs to to push the plot forward...and I often found myself on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next.

As Ella and Gil's relationship continues to develop and deepen (they are engaged!!), Gil's mother and aunts come to visit and meet Ella. Soon, someone is found dead in their hotel room, and Ella's friend takes the blame. I do not want to spoil too much about the plot, so, I will simply say, this book kept me hooked. Who was killed? Was he who was intended? Why is Ella's friend taking the blame? Is Ella's friend innocent? Is there more going on than meets the eye? You will just have to read to find out!

As Ella and Gil are engaged, many would expect Ella to give up her career, which she does not want to do (and she certainly should not have to give it up!). Ella stands up for herself and for what she believes to be right!

If you enjoy historical mysteries, I highly recommend this book! It kept me turning the pages to see whodunit, and I hope there will be many more books in this amazing series!

Thank you so much to Kensington Books for the ARC of this book, it is phenomenal! All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I really enjoy this series. I love the time-period of turn-of-the-century New York and I love the characters in this, especially Ella.

This is a fun, sweet easy-reading series and the murders are well-crafted and interesting. In this book we get to meet Gil's mother and aunts who have arrived from England to try to chivvy Gil and Ella along toward setting a wedding date and they are a lot of fun.

I really like the dichotomy of Ella between being a determinedly modern and independent woman with a career and her own control of everything in her life, and her sheltered view on men and relationships due to her being protected so carefully by those around her. Somehow it just makes her endearing and smooths out the hard-edges of her insistent independence and I like her more for it.

I definitely plan to continue reading this series. I like where the plots are going and look forward to more books.

This is yet another series that I am really enjoying the progress of. The setting is unique, as are the characters and their interactions.
It is 1900s New York, and Ella Shane runs an Opera company. I would not recommend starting this series at this point because the interactions will feel lacklustre without the prior history. Ella does repeat herself, something I am not overly fond of. Still, if there had been a longer gap between my reading of the various books, I might have appreciated it more.
In the previous books, we see Ella and a Duke announcing their feelings for each other. This story begins with the arrival of unexpected reinforcements that is meant to hurry their relationship along. Amidst the general confusion, a man's dead body is found in a bathtub. This splits the story into two. One is Ella and the company's personal growth and life, and the other is the investigation. Originally, wince she does not have any special reason to unravel the case; our lead protagonist does not think or process too much information about that death but is more concerned about the life of her sort-of fiance.
I guessed the culprit of one of the parts, and despite me trying to point them the right way (in my head), the characters took their sweet time in getting to the point. Even with this being the situation, I surprisingly enjoyed the entire thing. I like the people, which is always a bonus when reading such books.
I would recommend this series to anyone who likes the blurb and/or the premise.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

This is a new series to me, but it's one I'll definitely be reading again. It's funny and engaging with great characters. I enjoy historical fiction with a good twist and this one fits the bill. I took my time reading this so that I could enjoy the story a little longer.

4 Satisfied Stars for FATAL OVERTURE, bk3 in an Ella Shane Mystery written by Kathleen Marple Kalb.

MY RATING GUIDE:
1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/cute; 3.5= I enjoyed it; 4= I LIKED IT, QUITE a LOT; 5= I Loved it, it was great! (I seldom give 5 Stars).

New York City, Autumn 1899 ~ The Gilded Age
MC, Opera Diva Miss Ella Shane owns a NY based touring theatre company which is completing a successful run of their latest opera in New York City before regrouping and heading to London for their first overseas production. Ella met her as yet unannounced fiancée former barrister, Gilbert St. Aubyn, the Duke of Leith nearly a year ago when he came to New York to settle a family matter (bk#1). “The Barrister” recently returned to New York concerned for his English mother, the duchess, and 2 aunts who independently traveled to New York without explanation. When Gil arrives, he discovers his family and the woman he cares for embroiled in a potentially scandalous murder. Soon additional mishaps, jealousies, misunderstandings occur threatening the safety of opera patrons, Ella and her friends. I enjoyed both the historical romance and mystery elements in FATAL OVERTURE.

What I Liked ~
1) The main characters were well developed individuals I enjoyed reading about and could respect.
2) I was invested in the solving of the mysteries.
3) I love experiencing another time and place, and mysteries seem able to accomplish this nicely. The setting in FATAL OVERTURE (the period and the profession of the MC) drew my attention, including details pertaining to the performing arts and life among the different social classes (particularly the women) of the Gilded Age (early 1900’s).
4) The mysteries I enjoy most are either Classic, British, Historical or with characters of an unusual profession (magician, forensic entomologist, former WII Ranger/archivist) - preferably falling somewhere between Cozy mysteries and the more graphic and dark sort, but not precisely at either end. The Ella Shane series is closer to the Cozy end of the spectrum but not ridiculously so. I found it light, easy to read, and interesting.

FATAL OVERTURE was a glimpse into another time and place - I enjoyed visiting it and have marked the books in the series for purchase if they ever go on Sale ($12.99/book is too steep for my pocket). Historical fiction fans might especially be attracted and/or readers looking for a mostly Clean Cozy, not necessarily a complex mystery. I consider FATAL OVERTURE a “gentle” story, appropriate for readers looking for a relaxing read. Those who prefer darker, grittier - perhaps “truer to life” (and the worst it can dish out, in detail) may want to look elsewhere.

READER CAUTIONS -
PROFANITY - Yes. Occasional use of strong language.
VIOLENCE - Murder occurs off scene. The description is minimal and not at all graphic. This is a light mystery - G/PG.
SEXUAL SITUATIONS - None. Hugs & kisses.

I found myself deliberately slowing down my reading pace as I wanted the story to last awhile longer for my enjoyment. Although this was a new series to me, I will definitely be following the adventures of Ella Shane in the future, not to mention going back and reading the previous entries. While the story unfolded at a perhaps slower pace than many others of the same ilk, perhaps appropriately since it unfolds in the early 1900's, it was a delight to meet not just Ella and her beau Gil, a duke/barrister/lawyer, but his family and Ella's extended family and friends. And let's not forget Montezuma, an Amazon parrot, who is thoroughly entertaining with his renditions of not just opera but raucous drinking songs with attitude.

I loved that Gil's mother, a countess, no less, and aunts weren't put off at all by Ella's humble roots or mixed religious influences, even if it was a bit surprising to read they'd discovered a body in the bathtub of their hotel suite. True, he sounds like someone soundly deserving of his fate but, well, this death sets off a series of events and actions that draw you further into Ella's surroundings and reveal past events to those like me who are just discovering Ella Shane.

It's a fascinating world, too, peopled by characters that author Kalb brings to life well. I was particularly intrigued that one of the characters had been a drummer boy at Gettysburg as I, too, have an ancestor who fought in that battle. True, Ella is only a figment of Kalb's imagination but it shows how well she ties the characters, good or not-so-good, alive and part of their world, not just distractions. Not only is there the bathtub murder to solve but the question of who is threatening GIl and what role does Ella's reporter friend have in the murder. And, oh, yeah, that ominous message from an aunt with second sight that Ella should be careful where fire is involved. The laudanum dreams Ella has at one point are both wonderful and reveal much background in a way that works, too. Finally, toss in the negotiation going on between Gil and Ella, both of them with many responsibilities, and every chapter was intriguing and informative on who these people were.

Bottom line, I'm looking forward to the next entrant to their lives. Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Press for introducing me to these fascinating people.

" A Fatal Overture" is book #3 in "An Ella Shane Mystery" by Kathleen Marple Kalb.

"During the first winter of the twentieth century, Gilded Age trouser diva Ella Shane refuses to dim the lights on her dazzling show business career for marriage—even to a dashing British duke. But the versatile mezzo-soprano may have to put it all on the line once murder takes centerstage . . .

New York City, 1900. Renowned opera singer and theatre company owner Ella may have both much to gain and much to lose by getting engaged to her courtly long-distance love, Gil Saint Aubuyn.

Now, with a London tour run fast approaching, prenuptial worries weighing heavily on her heart, and an intricate Joan of Arc aria to rehearse, can Ella decide what she’s willing to sacrifice before confronting a relentless criminal bent on watching her entire life go up in smoke?"

My thoughts:
Navigating the rather restrictive proprieties of what is acceptable and what is not when courting, is rather challenging for Ella and Gil. There is an understanding that they will marry, but sorting out the details of a potential married life is a massive undertaking.

A murder at the hotel where the Highland ladies are staying, sees the ladies being moved to the Washington Square home. An interesting way for Ella to get to know her intendeds family. At the same time, the household cook, Mrs. G, is preparing to leave to marry Preston Dare. Finding a replacement won't be easy.

Ella and Tommy are also informed by a reliable source that there is a threat to Gil's life but they aren't sure who is making the threat or how far the person will go...

The murder at the hotel was an unsettling case and showed just how threatening life could be for the young women who had next to no rights at the time. Many twists before a stunning resolution!

I wasn't the least bit surprised as to who was behind the threat to Gil - but the lengths the person went to, to get to what they wanted were unsettling to say the least.

As always, the core characters of this series are engaging and entertaining. Enlightened conversation and witty banter as well as a deep loyalty and love for one another make for a thoroughly entertaining read.

Originally posted on my blog Nonstop Reader.

A Fatal Overture is the third Ella Shane historical cozy mystery by Kathleen Marple Kalb. Released 29th March 2022 by Kensington, it's 320 pages and is available in hardcover and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

Set in the early 20th century, Ella is an opera diva and engaged to British royalty. Whilst they're ironing out the basic conditions of their married existence as a couple (she has no intentions of giving up her career which his family sees as deeply problematic), murder and attempted murder intrude in the negotiations threatening to upset the apple cart forever.

Although the author is good at providing backstory, I would recommend readers begin with the earlier books in the series. There's a fair bit of character development which will be missed by hopping into the series here.

Quite a significant proportion of the action in this installment is spent on descriptions of food and clothing, to the detriment of the mystery. For readers who enjoy cozy drama with a side of mystery, this will suit. The mystery itself was mostly straightforward and mostly investigated off-page.

All in all, it's well written and the author has a good grasp of descriptive prose and plotting. The dialogue is a bit anachronistic in places (especially the British aunties/mother), but overall harmless and good fun.

Three and a half stars. Eminently readable.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I missed the first two in this series with opera singer and part time sleuth Ella Shane, but I am going to go back and read them soon.
Even without reading the first two this book works very well as a stand-alone whodunnit. I gleaned enough from the well written descriptive text and dialogue that I did not feel at a disadvantage for missing the two previous books at all. It was very easy the catch on to who was who and their relationships and back stories. That being said, I did enjoy reading Ella's story, the three sister's arriving brought spunk and humor to the story which I very much enjoyed. I did have one slightly large problem with the book overall. This is supposed to be a historical mystery? Ok, yes there is a body, yes it is a murder, but the amount of attention paid to said murder itself, let alone to the solving of it is almost like a forgotten footnote!, an after thought if you will. To me the murder occurs, is discovered, the sisters are questioned and then the book goes off, more concerned with Ella and her love-life, whether her and Gil are going to finally come to an agreement so they can marry. This seems to be the primary focal point, the murder takes a dim second.
Still the book is well written, the characters are entertaining and likeable. It is a quick, enjoyable, entertaining read for a weekend or breezy afternoon. Just don't expect to be solving an intricate murder plot.
Thank you to the publishers at Kensington Books and to Net Galley for the free ARC, I am leaving my honest review in return.

Five reasons I'm giving Five Stars to A Fatal Overture by Kathleen Marple Kalb:

1. The libretto - we are in New York in 1900 and three elderly ladies, in town to visit opera singer Ella Shane, find a body in their hotel room. What can Ella do but try to help, surrounded by her beloved and a loyal band of family and friends?

2. The diva - Ella is an accomplished and kindhearted woman, a mezzo soprano “trouser diva,” known for singing male roles, and owner of her own opera company. She leads a full and complicated life, from very humble beginnings to the love of an English duke, and is a strong, human and very appealing character.

3. The troupe - Ella is part of a close-knit community, some family, some friends collected along the way, some from her professional life. All are unique and interesting characters, as kind and loyal as she is, and all add color and warmth to the story.

4. The score - the murder and the investigation that follows are not the main focus of this book. We focus is Ella and the direction she wants for her life as an independent woman at the turn of the 20th century. This is the third book in the series and the first for me, and I was just fine diving in.

5. The bel canto - if you are in the market for a charmer, a lovely read that is captures your attention and your heart with its fine characters and gentle mystery, this could well be the book for you.

This is the third book in the series and I’ve absolutely loved all the books in this fantastic cozy historical mystery series.

Ella Shane, renowned opera singer, is back and she unexpectedly meets Gil’s family when they come to New York. Gil is Ella’s will they/won’t they barrister and duke. They’re in for a surprise though, when they find a dead body in the bathtub in the hotel! Things take an even more concerning turn when Ella and co. discover that Gil is also a target.

I definitely recommend reading the previous two books first since you get a better understanding of these characters since you get more back story on them, I’ve loved “watching” as Ella and Gil grew, both as individuals and their relationship. I was cheering them on during this book! The mystery was intriguing and I loved seeing Ella’s friends and sleuthing cohorts and meeting Gil’s mother and aunts have us some laugh out loud moments.

I really hope we get more of this awesome series and I recommend it for anyone who loves historical fiction and cozy mysteries.

Thank you to Netgalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Once again, Kathleen Marple Kalb writes an Ella Shane story that is hard to put down. The 3rd in the Ella Shane series is somewhat different from the last two in that it examines relationships more closely than in the past.
Is the Diva doomed to sabotage her chance at true love for fear of losing her identity? When the Duke's family makes a surprise visit, and murder is committed in their hotel suite, it finds Ella playing host to them in her home. Changes abound. Not the least is the worry if she will measure up and if she and Gil (the Duke) can agree that their love is more important than either of their careers.
The usual cast of characters can all have an opinion, even Ella's friend Hetty who finds herself confessing to the murder.
Death also seems to be stalking more than one of the people close to Ella.
This book is chockful of exciting twists and turns as the characters adjust to changes in their lives and dangers lurking around to corner.
But for me, the heart of the story is the meaning of family, love, trust, relationships and understanding.
I love this book for its depth and its rollercoaster of emotions. Well done, Kathleen!

What a boring narcissistic stupid woman ...she thinks she's more intelligent than she is .

Apparently shes also thst dumb thst she keeps getting into dangerous situations and almost killed ..in this book and apparently rlthe preceding books.

Also bemused how every female writer of "mysteries ",has every man who is related to them ir looks sideways at her "oh so in admiration/love " with rhe female is from "pleasant looking " to " rlthe most beautiful man ever " .BUT, the murderer /criminal " are always plain to.ugly .SO lame . Also funny because when a male writer claims all females are gorgeous that want the lead MALE character , female readers are in an uproar.

As a natural.born female, I find the " modern feminist " is quite the hypocrite in fiction as badly as in reality .

In short I can't stand Ellen and her crowd of male admirers are so mind whiped by her. Her little passive aggressive tantrums thst the dumb men are amused by would make me back off if I was a man .

Her constant patting herself on the back as she babbles every chapter about her charity is beyond annoying too .

Will nkt read previous or future books by this person.

A FATAL OVERTURE by Kathleen Marple Kalb
The Third Ella Shane Mystery

Forced to postpone her opera company's London run, Ella Shane is relaxing at home in New York City. While she's disappointed not to be seeing her beau, it gives her time to consider the consequences should she marry. She's stunned when Gil's mother and aunts arrive at her doorstep. Instead of being opposed to the match, they've come to ensure the nuptials! A murdered man in their bathtub at the hotel gives Ella and Gil, who has followed his relatives to New York, pause. The trio didn't know the man, they certainly couldn't be involved, could they? They certainly seem to know something. As Ella and Gil attempt to come to an agreement about marriage, strange accidents and illnesses keep occurring, and Ella's aunt warns of fire. Will Ella overcome her doubts? Or will she lose everything, including her life?

I absolutely love this series and this third entry is a wonderful addition. There's danger, cunning, and strong women aplenty. I love how Gil's aristocratic family is accepting and welcoming, providing quite a different reception than Ella could have faced. I admire their practicality and hope to see more of them.

A FATAL OVERTURE shines a light on the plight of women in service at the turn of the century. It also shows how desperate and despicable men can be when they can't have the woman they want. Sadly, these issues remain prominent today, well into the next century.

With protection a key theme A FATAL OVERTURE combines romance and adventure in a smartly written mystery.

I received this book from the Kensington Cozy Club. It's the third book in the series, and I haven't read the first two. It can be read as a stand-alone but there are quite a few characters whose relationship to Ella and Tom aren't fully explained in this book and there were times I was confused as to who was who.

The plot is a bit slower than I'm used to. I'm not sure if that's because of the historical setting.

This is set at a time when women had fewer rights than they do now. Service (a la Downton Abbey) still exists and most young women must worry that they'll be dismissed without a character reference and be unable to secure future reputable work.

I understand Ella's wish to continue her career--but honestly, if the only sticking point is whether she'll do 1 or 2 additional runs in New York--have they ever heard of compromise? Couldn't they agree to alternate years? One year do 2 and the next year only 1. I was a bit dismayed that it again took a "life or death" issue to get them to realize they do love each other and don't want to live without each other. It seems to be a formulaic part of plots these days and it's getting old.

A Fatal Overture is the third historical mystery to feature Ella Shane. The story takes place during the Gilded Age so fans of that TV show may enjoy this view of the time period. Ella is a performer; she is also in love with a British aristocrat so there is a tension in the story over work vs. relationship. Readers of the prior books will no doubt enjoy catching up with the latest on this couple.

Now relatives (a mother and sister) of our aristocrat have come to visit. There is trouble when a body is found in a bathtub in their hotel. Lord Peter Wimsey once investigated a case of a bathtub victim but here we have Kalb’s version. It is entertaining and sure to be enjoyed by cozy mystery aficionados who may also enjoy the opera and show business that are in the novel.

This series is best read in order. However, a reader could still start here and go backwards.

I hear this author on my local news. I am so impressed that she also writes mysteries.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Kensington for this title. All opinions are my own.

Though A Fatal Overture is Kathleen Marple Kalb's thrird in the Ella Shane Mystery series, it is my first. What an enjoyable historical read, set in the early 1900's London. I did not feel as if I missed anything by not reading the first two books, but the characters and their story was so enjoyable, I want to read more about them---I will get the ones I missed and catch up.
The plot moves at a good clip , the characters are believable as real people, the murder and its mystery were also quite good. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for sending me the review copy that I requested. All opinions are my own.

I was hoping to find this next in series!
What a wonderful story that really has it all: a mystery, historical insights into class and religious distinctions, and discriminations, misogyny, and romance.
The characters are real (the good, the bad, and the disgusting), Ella is an opera singer with talent and from a mixed religious heritage (and a large extended family) from NYC, Gil is a barrister and a duke from the Highlands, the victim was a bounder and lech who got what he deserved. Let the sleuthing begin! Very enjoyable and well written. Loved it!
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Kensington Books via NetGalley. Thank you!

Ella Shane is a fascinating protagonist and I absolutely loved A Fatal Overture! When the Duke's mother and aunts arrive unexpectedly in New York City to meet Ella, the last thing you expect is for them to find a dead body in their bathroom, Luckily Gil arrives in good time to assist Ella in figuring out what really happened in his relatives' bathroom.

I love the characters in this series and the new additions of Gil's family are surprising. I do not want to give away any of the exciting plot twists but this book is so well done - I highly recommend it! I cannot wait for the next book and thank #NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of #AFatalOverture!

I have some doubts about the historical accuracy, maybe the mother of a duke wasn't so openminded during the Belle Epoque, but I'm sure I had a lot of fun in reading this mystery and thoroughly enjoyed it even if I didn't read the rest of the series.
The mystery takes often the backseat to the romance but it's solid and kept me guessing.
Ella and the cast of characters are likeable and fleshed out, I liked the humour, and the storytelling. A fast paced story that kept me reading.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

I love historical fiction, murder mysteries and strong female characters. Plus, I was hoping this book would be a harbinger for many subsequent books to come in the series. But alas, the plot was so painstakingly slow, and the excessive unnecessary detail so off putting, I barely could get through this book. I was extremely inclined to like this novel, having read many historical novels of this type. I must say I struggled to give this 2 stars. Sorry, but Ella Shane is just too drab for this reader.

Opera singer Ella Shane has a lot in her plate. She's dealing with her engagement to Gil, a Duke, and now she's got another murder in her hands. The manager of the hotel where they're staying is murdered and the prime suspect is maid. Except this maid s a journalist friend of Ella working undercover for a story. She isn't giving truth to what actually happened. Could she be covering for somebody? The mystery gets deeper from there mixed in with Ella and Gil's relationship woes. Plus an unexpected visit from his family

Nice to visit Ella Shane's world again. A lot of this book is about the shifting situations as Preston marries Mrs G, Ella and Gil get formally engaged, and Hetty finally finds a man that respects what she does after she goes to extreme lengths to prove herself. The mystery itself was really two easily predicted ones. However, as I find I'm not as interested in the mystery as I am the characters, I was really satisfied with this one. Not sure if there will be a fourth but there's a lovely denouement if not, along with somewhere to go if there is.

What a delightful book in a delightful series! I have read this series from the beginning and it keeps getting better and better. This one is dedicated, mostly, to catching up with our previous cast of characters while adding some hilarious new ones (Gil's mother and aunts *giggle, snort*). I enjoyed every page of this and was only sad when it ended. If you haven't tried this series, check it out.

Ella is back in A Fatal Overture! I was so happy to read this next installment in which the main character is dealing with murder. This historical mystery did a great job of portraying New York City in the 1900s. Whether you have read the two previous books you cannot help but be invested in the characters.

I could not put this cozy mystery down and now I can't wait for book 4.

Looking forward to reading more books by this author in the future.

This was an awesome novel. Love and mystery are one of my favorite combinations. Ms Ella Shane is a strong, determined woman who made sure to not lose herself or work when getting engaged to her soulmate. This book was all about women standing their grown and being seen as noble. Loved it.

Although the overall book was great it did have one downfall for me. The mystery murder seemed to be dragged on a bit and the story of Teddy wasn't well detailed.
