Farley is an introverted mess. Overweight and still living with his parents he didn’t think his confidence could get any lower until he’s carjacked in a convenience store parking lot. The severe beating is nothing compared to having to replace his mom’s car on his part-time wages. He makes a plan to change his life around starting with getting fit.
Farley can’t see why anyone like Oscar would have even the slightest interest in him. He’s a goof-off at best but when Oscar agrees to help him get into shape at the gym, Farley won’t say no. He’ll just have to keep his libido in check before he makes a fool of himself.
Oscar can’t explain why his inner wolf has taken him to a hospital room where a man lay, his face swollen and bruised. Until now, he and his wolf have lived in harmony. When Oscar wants physical contact he goes out and gets it, no strings, no second nights. But that all goes out the window when he sees Farley. He doesn’t know the first thing about being a mate, but he knows that no one will ever hurt Farley again.
Oscar fears his intense feelings may scare his mate away so Oscar agrees to be Farley’s trainer. As fun as watching Farley squat may be, Oscar begins to suspect that the simple carjacking Farley endured may be a sign of something more, that he may be in danger. But this time, Farley won’t be left beaten. Farley is his baby to protect.
His Baby to Protect is a steamy, funny, 50k word romp into the world of mpreg and wolf shifters. It is the first book in The Den series, a spin-off of the Wolf’s Mate series and can be read as a standalone.
This was an okay shifter mpreg story, but in some points it was too superficial, which made me feel detached from the characters.
I really liked Farley and Oscar was an okay character, except there is a thing as being too overprotective.
Farley is an overweight (human) man in his thirties, still living with his parents, with a dead-end job. He is just coming out of a convenient store when he is mugged by a stranger. He gets pretty beat up, so he ends up in the hospital.
Oscar is a wolf shifter, who has never been interested in dating or love, until he feels the pull of his mate. When he finds his mate in the hospital he knows he can’t just barge in and claim the man. Especially since it is clear Farley has such a low self-esteem, he will never believe a man like Oscar will want him..
This is a sweet story without a lot of relationship angst. It took Oscar a bit of time convincing Farley he really wanted him, but after that it was pretty smooth sailing for these two.
And while this story definitely had its funny moments..
"But, you shouldn't talk like that around the baby," he said, he ended his sentence on dramatic stage whisper. Farley started to laugh. "He can hear me, but he can't understand me. If it upsets you, I'll use a code. Turtle me, Oscar. Turtle me hard." Oscar liked that Farley sometimes referred to their baby as a he and sometimes as a she, keeping both possibilities open in his mind. He wasn't sure about the new code though. "Turtle my shell, raw and rough like I like it."
It also skipped some important parts, like the whole pregnancy. Farley suddenly went from his body still adjusting to be able to conceive, to being in heat, to being pregnant, to giving birth. It was over before I knew it.
Overall, this was a nice mpreg, but not that special. I won’t read the next book.
Gosh, this might be my favorite story in the series (this is the first book in a spin-off series from her Wolf's Mate series) because I just adored Farley. He might be an introverted mess, but he's adorable, and completely deserving of the love and adoration that Oscar gives him.
Although this is a stand-alone and the first book in The Den series, you would have first met Farley and his family in the Wolf's Mate series and learned how the pack at the Den came about, so I do recommend reading in order. I love their whole family, and am so glad that Farley finally got his mate.
I loved that Oscar was so supportive, patient, and understanding with Farley. He didn't see him as an overweight mess, he just saw the mate he adored and he was caring and devoted right from the start. With his help, Oscar really brings out the personality and confidence in Farley. They also had great chemistry together, which is a must in my book!
I just love this series, each book I seem to enjoy even more than the last. I can't wait for who is next - Caleb, right?!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a very enjoyable read, with Farley tugging at my heartstrings with his vulnerable self and Oscar making me enjoy his protective mate personality.
I am in love with this shifter series, each couple comprises of such unique and distinct characters, and the romance development in all of the books is just drool-worthy.
However, having said that, I didn't get to see as much of vulnerable mate-overprotective mate moments as in previous books. This was more there being two strong characters, one of which was just having self-image issues, though with reason. Being mugged because you were judged weak and frail would snap anyone's priorities in life into clear focus.
I enjoyed how Farley was able to go through his workout with the gorgeous eye candy, Oscar, to provide him with distraction! And I really hadn't even come close to thinking it would be Oscar who would snatch Farley from the singles' group! It was such a surprise!
It was gratifying meeting with the previous couples. It made for a walk down memory lane when I remembered the personalities of our sweet heroes.
All in all, it was a satisfying and lighthearted read, with not too much angst. The romance development could have been more detailed. It felt like they got closer and trusted each other way too quickly. But I'm still hooked on to this world and can't wait for the next book in this brand new spinoff series.
* I received an ARC in exchange of an honest review. *
This was...not good. Everything happened in hyper-speed mode, way too fast even for my instalove heart.
So many things just didn't make sense & that's saying a lot for an mpreg story...Farley, a human, getting pregnant like a week after they get together was the biggest. There was no description of how he suddenly develops the ability to become pregnant, like give me something here?!?
I didn't find either MC particularly enjoyable, it read as they were young, unworldly but Farley is 30 & I've no idea abt Oscar...
Don't waste your time or money on this book...I picked this up as a buddy read and I was the only one of the 3 of us to finish it & that's only bc I have a hard time doing that!!
When Farley is beaten and carjacked he winds up in the hospital in serious condition. After he awakens a man is in the doorway watching him and frightens him. When Oscar realizes Farley is his mate he runs away. He's used to being a player and not ready to settle down. When he realizes his mistake he goes back to the hospital only to be told his mate has died. Shocked to later discover his mate at the same gym he works at he doesn't take it well and scares Farley.
Farley is sweet and gentle though often self deprecating. Oscar is all alpha male and overprotective of Farley since his assault. They are so sweet together. The story is well written and both characters very likeable and relatable. The angst is kind of medium level.
Don’t kill me, but I heave to say this was just okay. Besides the usual: I didn’t feel like there was much to either MC, nor did they develop much. Also, with this being a spin off series, the author (again it’s just my opinion) didn’t give a decent brief overview for readers that have yet to read the Wolf’s Mate series.
Oscar is the things dream are made of and Farley wonders when he's going to wake up.
This is a nice opposites attracts story. Oscar, the shifter and Farley, the overweight nerd. Things are shakey at first for the couple but then things click into place.
What a Fantastic Book, I was hooked from the very start. The writing is very well done and thought out. The characters are engaging and likeable as well as though out. The flow of the book was smooth and steady. This is the first book that I have read by this author. This is also the first book of a new series that is apparently a spinoff, of the Wolf's Mate Series. There are references to other characters and events of those books so, if you have that series it ties in but if you haven’t like me its ok anything important is explained. The MC’s are Farley who is human, overweight, computer / game geek, has social insecurities, uses humor that hurts himself, sweet, adorable, helpful and more. And Oscar who is a wolf shifter who is very protect of those that he considers his or that are in need, is into making sure that he is physically able to protect those he needs too, good looking, has not wanted a relationship, patient.
The book starts with Farley buying an arm full of food and trying to pay for it with it still in his arms. Which he has a hard time doing, because of course he doesn’t have enough money so he’s trying to look everywhere for more. And I’m thinking why aren’t you putting things onto the counter, it would help. Once he gets outside and almost into his mom’s car, he gets mugged. So now I feel doubly bad for my previous thoughts, poor guy. The first time that Farley and Oscar see each other but don’t meet is at the hospital. At one point in the hospital a nurse comes into Farley’s room and this is part of the conversation. (“Word is, you aren’t going to be around much longer,” she said. Farley’s mother gasped. “Oh God. No. Not like that,” the nurse said, apologizing. “I meant you were going to get to go home soon. I should really think about the way I say things,” she muttered as she left.). She also at another point makes Oscar think that Farley dies. Those two moments caught my attention because after I had major surgery for the first time I had a similar conversation with a nurse only the other way around.
Farley decided that he needs to be stronger and joins the same gym that Oscar goes to. They meet for the first time and things are off and running. Oscar fights through Farley’s insecurities and the fact that he never wanted a mate. While their working on their relationship they have friends and family that do some meddling and they are still looking for the muggers. At one point before anyone knows about Farley being gay and about them being mates they go on at date. Here are two parts of the conversations from that date. (“I want to go somewhere where no one can smell me beyond regular old cologne and body odor.” “Even your body odor smells good,” Oscar said. “Okay, Casanova. Do you know of a non-shifter place?”. .... Instead Farley closed his eyes in an expression of relief. “You make mistakes. This is great.” Farley stood straight and looked down at the bar, speaking from the corner of his mouth. “And also, super awkward. He is right behind—“). To get the complete picture and understand you will need to read the book there is too much to put down here. But it is good and there is a lot more in this book. I would definitely recommend it. Plus you need to read it so that you can find out about the reference “turtle me” means. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.
Oh gawd!!! I wanted to DNF SOOOOOO BBBBBAAAAADDDDDD!!!!
This was waaaaaaaayyyyyyy OVER. THE. FUCKING. TOP.!!!
WTF IS "But the appendage between Oscar's legs may as well be classified as a WMD because Farley was sure it would destroy him.???
And every time he calls him "mate", I'm not thinking awww, his forever, I'm hearing Australian accent in my head wondering whyyyyyyy?!?!? Which just throws off the mood especially when I have to battle with all the other eye-rolls in this here shindig!!!
'... and now used his cock like a bottle of lube...' 👀👀
I got into this really wanting to like it, 1. Because I really like mpreg and was searching for something new and 2. The premise behind this seemed fresh and exciting.
This fell flat in sooooooo many ways, the storyline was disjointed and awkward, I did not believe the chemistry between the MCs even with shifter hormones involved that were supposed to make it more palatable. Farley did not incite feelings of empathy and wanting to protect him in me. I left dialogues where he was involved confused as to who he is as a person at best and shifting between cringing at things coming out of his mouth and over his pity party at worst. (Please don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't identify with his plight, it's more that the writing did not get me empathetic towards him; his character portrayal just left a bad taste with me.)
Only reason I even pushed through is because I really really wanted to like this and I kept wishing that with an established relationship, the awkwardness in the beginning would somehow morph into something good...
... if wishes were fishes we'd all swim in riches...
I'm usually a fan of mpreg, though those stories tend to be set in the omegaverse which this one isn't. Making it a bit more difficult for the author to justify the change Farley suddenly have to go through. But it's fated mates and instant attraction The pregnancy happened very quickly and was over just as fast. Which robs the reader of the experience.
I thought Oscar would have to work more for it but not really. Farley is not freaked out over a random man taking ownership of him I didn't really feel the chemistry between the chars so I skipped most intimate scenes.
When there is so few books with chubby characters, I read what there is and half of them is always about some weight loss journey instead of having them learn to love their body and be loved for it.
Because realistically, Oscar would never have gone for Farley if his wolf didn't insist, Farley was so far from his usual type. Which again made me even more annoyed that Oscar kept dismissing Farley's insecurities about just that. "Me and the wolf are the same, you're mate, accept it." He needed a punch in the face.
The cover model looks like Macklemore which then made Oscar look like Macklemore. Which then made me sing Downtown the entire time I was reading. Normally that would be a good time. This time though it was annoying bc I was actually enjoying the story. It wasn’t the best but it was enough to keep my interest. And then they decided to knot for the first time in a gym locker room. Also not a good time. Then there were a few other things that just got on my nerves but I can’t be bothered to write them out.
I stumbled into this series and it looks like it is a spin-off from a previous series as there are established couples throughout. I still enjoyed this book and the 2nd one in the series but I'm going to stop now and go back and find the beginning series before finishing this one.
I loved this book. It was well written with well developed characters. This book is a spin off of The Wolf's Mate series by the same author. I love that series and this one was just as great. I am looking forward to see where this series is going next.
I love, love , love Oscar and Farley together! I can relate to Farley in so many ways. Just like me, Farley is overweight and has confidence issues due to bullying over the years. He gets attacked outside of a store and is made to feel helpless. He decides to make changes in his life so that he may never feel helpless again. He meets Oscar and Oscar can't take his eyes off him! Oscar helps Farley get his confidence back. I truly loved this story and can't wait for the next installment.
While this is the first book in a new series, The Den, this is a spin off from The Wolf's Mate series. If you, like me, have not read the books in The Wolf's Mate series you will not be lost & this is still a very good & enjoyable book. I do suspect, however, that the characters will be more familiar & more developed.
This was a nice shifter romance good for a light read.
I liked how not all of the characters were perfect & model-like, though Farley does tend to focus on being overweight a bit much. Oscar is a gym rat & helps his new mate with learning how to exercise well to achieve his goals after an attack. There is a lot of gym & diet discussion is this book, but a good amount of steam and other drama to balance things out.
I'm very picky about MPreg. Sometimes it's not done correctly and there's a lot of wolf shifter mpreg. In this case we have Farley a human and Oscar, an alpha shifter. I think the first thing that needs to be talked about however, is the pack dynamic. They have this structure where they have pack masters. This book is a spin off of another series by the author, so I'm not sure if you have to have read that to understand the hierarchy and dynamic of their pack structure. If so I think that might be a tick off of the story because there are so many characters based off of that structure that feed into how Oscar and Farley end up together that it almost felt like there were holes left.
Anyway, one day and small twists of fate when their mating bond reacts when Farley is attacked and Oscar feels that and they both end up in the hospital for independent reasons. Oscar knows his mate is there. When he finds out who it is, he subtly, but assertively puts himself in Farley's life. Farley is a very insecure person, but also charming and open which draws Oscar to him even more.
With everything that's happened Farley and Oscar are oblivious to who they are to each other outside of mates. Farley is Oscar's pack master's brother. It's this part of the dynamic that I feel leaves a lot of holes because when we found out who it was that attacked Farley, nothing in the story connects that thread of detail. It seems a lot more like circumstance than the author's deliberate attempt to weave all the leading events to that one point, including Farley's pregnancy. That is also almost like a side detail of the story.
It was overall very good and highly erotic between Farley and Oscar, but the story outside the romance could have been better. I almost with it was longer, to fill in those holes, or that the next books was a continuation of book one after book one had a cliffy. Either way, it was good enough that I finished and am looking forward to the next book 3.5 stars.
This was a cute little story sure to please all the BBW ladies who dream of getting the hottest guy in the room. Farley is a classic overweight, socially isolated, geeky person (like me!). His friends are mostly online and he uses humor, including making fun of himself, as a shield. Oscar is a hit-it and-quit-it kind of guy with no thoughts of a mate. When forces drag him to Farley's hospital room after Farley's attack, he is completely confused and freaked out. Once the two meet in person at the gym when Farley is trying to toughen up, they are a match made in heaven. There really is no angst in the relationship except the anxiety stirred up by Oscar's shifter overprotectiveness. Oscar is that unattainable guy for most women--ripped, protective, sexually impressive, and thinks his pudgy, geeky mate is gorgeous and perfect. The pregnancy is a short part of the story but has many cute moments and a sweet birthing/new baby scene. Now, where I find fault with the book is it's claim that it's a standalone. I read a few but not all of the books in the original series and still was lost a lot of the time as to who was who. The characters from the earlier books appear briefly but all out of context. The shifter world and the male pregnancy logistics are never really explained. The author really is assuming that you've read the other series completely. There's no cliffhanger here at least. No character hinted at to be the next mated. I think the author needed somewhere for her series to go and decided to spin it off. It's a good series start but I think the next one will need better backstory handling. I enjoyed the book and found it fluffy and sweet. I will definitely be following the series.
I liked this first book in the Den series and seeing some familiar faces. I loved that Farley got his happily ever after like all his siblings have. I loved the connection between Farley and Oscar and I loved that Oscar offered to help Farley workout since Farley joined the gym and then he offered to help Farley with a food plan but if Farley never was interested in the gym, losing weight or eating healthily he wouldn’t have tried because they’re mates and they both want the other to be happy. I really didn’t like Farley’s self depreciation but that came from a way to protect himself as no one can supposedly hurt you if you make a joke about yourself first. I’m glad that there was a wee bit of conflict when Felix found out from his mum that Farley had moved in with Oscar and he was worried, he pushed Farley out of the way and Oscar didn’t like that and they nearly came to blows, as even though Felix knew that Oscar and Farley are mates and that things usually move quickly he was just worried about Farley and that Oscar hadn’t come to him as not only his co-pack master but his mates brother. I loved that Oscar finally found out who had mugged and beaten Farley and who was doing it to so many others as at least they got one of the Coyote’s and know that his pack are going to most likely be a big problem in the near future. I’d definitely recommend this book, series and author to everyone.
Kiki Burrell's new Den series picks up where the Wolf's mate series leaves off. So if you've enjoyed the previous books, and I highly recommend them, you're gonna love this one. (Yes, I know they're all stand alone books but I'm one of those who has to read in order.)
I really enjoyed this book and as always the story and characters grab you and you can't put it down. It's a bit of catching up with older characters and learning about Oscar and Farley who previously had small roles in the series. I love that Oscar accepts Farley as he is, that the changes are what Farley wants and not what he has to do to win Oscar's approval.
Farley spent most of his life hiding from people because he's tired of being picked on about his weight. He is sure Oscar wouldn't want to voluntarily be around him because of it.
Oscar wasn't ready to find his mate. But he's soo connected to a man he doesn't know that when Farley takes a beating he feels his pain and even passes out. He's gonna have a hard time in more ways then one getting Farley to believe he's for real. He doesn't think Farley needs to change but he wants to protect him and help him in any way he can.
There is a really nice community of characters in these two series and I look forward to reading about each one. I received this book as an ARC for my honest review.
His Baby To Protect is book one in Kiki Burrelli’s The Den series. Now, I was told this was a spinoff from another series but I never read that. I can say without a doubt you can read this as a standalone without reading it though.
My favorite thing about this book was Farley. Without question he was amazing. I didn’t love his self-deprecation but he was a product of the life around him. He’s overweight and when the book opens, he’s violently mugged. Drawn to the gym to get in shape and not be a helpless victim is where he meets Oscar. Well, re-meets him.
What I really loved about this book was that the author never, not once, body shamed Farley. As a matter of fact she showed us that we can love ourselves no matter our size and that others will love us too. Major props to that I was impressed.
Oscar was adorable in his need to protect Farley and their interactions were often humorous. This isn’t some high speed action book, or even suspenseful. There was a bit of nail-biting at the end for a brief moment but all in all it’s a fairly light read. I really loved the message in this book and look forward to reading more of this series.
I think out of all the Kiki Burrelli books I have read, this one is my favorite. I absolutely adore Farley. I love the way he was written. In so many books it's always big guys and built ones and Farley is just a regular, a little overweight man with a charming personality.
I already adored Farley from the other books because he was the brother who didn't ask questions. He just gave his quiet strength and was there for you no matter what. When we first meet him again in this book, he is being carjacked. I cried. I bawled because who could hurt such a wonderful man. I hated what it did to him too. Farley was already down on himself, because he wasn't the 'perfect’ brother look wise he thought the others were. Being somewhat overweight and still living with his parents has weighed down on his self esteem and this beating he got just made it worse. My heart just kept breaking. Farley is just perfect the way he is and you want him to realize it. He's so sweet and caring and has this quiet strength about him. I was so glad when he finally got to meet Oscar.
Oscar right off the bat knew that Farley was his mate and was so pissed about him being beaten. But he had to take things so because Farley was so skittish. But Oscar became the strength Farley needed. And Oscar helped Farley blossom into a more confident man. He encouraged him and loved him and showed him he was perfect the way he is. Not as somebody else. Oscar encouraged him when Farley wanted to join a gym and better himself. I loved that about Oscar. He refused to give up and calmly persisted to gain his mate and finally have the lifemate he has always needed.
Just when I thought these series couldn't get any better, Kiki Burrelli spins off and starts a series with a bang. These books will definitely stay in my library to be read again and again.
Great relationship but inconsistencies in the story
3.5☆ I really loved the relationship development between Farley and Oscar, they have two distinct personalities as well as being two different species but it is the protectiveness Oscar has towards Farley, not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well - even when it is Farley who is putting himself down - and the resulting confidence in Farley that speaks to their growing connection, the deep well of affection, the genuine love, and leads to their HEA. There is some troubles they need to overcome, conflict with outside sources, some violence, family issues, plenty of steamy sexy times, and some great secondary characters that help carry the story along. My main issue with this story was the inconsistencies, there were a few times it was hard to grasp the timeline and some things felt unresolved or incomplete. An example with no spoiler is at the end of chapter 25, there is a fairly explosive event and everyone agrees to go down to The Den to talk about it but in chapter 26 it is apparently some time later and there was no talk or mention having gone to The Den or what happened there.
First let me mention, this book is a standalone, but I highly recommend reading the "Wolf's Mate" series. Not because you wont understand the book, but because it will make this book just that much sweeter. Kiki Burrelli is a new to me author, but after reading her blurb i didn't hesitate on the opportunity to receive an ARC of his baby to protect in exchange for an honest review. While I thought I would just be signing up for a great weekend read, I now know that I've found a new author to stalk relentlessly for new releases.
I absolutely LOVED Farley and Oscar. Farley was this introverted pudgy guy with low self esteem that just decided he would steal a piece of my heart. While Oscar was this hot and sweet shifter that absolutely would not give up on the mate he never even went looking for. Their romance is the sweetest, and their chemistry was off the charts.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good shifter romance.
His Baby to Protect doesn’t involve a baby until near the end, but there is a lot of protection going on. Farley is human but he is the chosen mate of a wolf shifter. Farley is out of shape and lives with his parents, playing video games and eating unhealthy food when he is mugged in a grocery store parking lot. The attacker isn’t identified until much later in the story but this becomes a thread that will probably continue through the series. Oscar is a wolf shifter who realizes that Farley is his mate while Farley is in the hospital recovering from the beating he received when he was mugged. Oscar determines then and there that he will not allow any one to ever molest his mate again, but it’s hard to convince Farley that he means it. This is an mpreg story with just a bit of angst, but mostly it is a sweet romance. Enjoyable for those who like mpreg (I do!) and shifter stories (again, I do!).
a great new spin-off series from Burrelli’s “Wolf’s mates series
This is the first book in “the Den” series which should be read in order and after reading the “Wolf’s mate” series. This book follows Farley & Oscar, both were in the previous series but they had never met before. Farley is an overweight nerdy gamer who is attacked one night outside a store. He meets Oscar at the local gym when he wants to learn self-defense after he gets out of the hospital. Oscar, the wolf-shifter, knows Farley is his mate from first sniff but he’s human so he doesn’t know why he feels drawn to Oscar. There’s a great story here, especially amongst the pain and darkness! If you like some darker aspects of stories (some triggers for assault) and live mpreg, give this second series a chance!
I think this might have been slightly better if I had read the series that lead to this one first. I think a lot of background info was lost by not having done that. This is pretty much an insta-love book. I liked the characters overall and the plot was easy and straight forward. I really did enjoy the read.
My problem with the book is that it was SO shallow there is little conflict and the characters jump from one moment to the next with little to no detail. The author has a good concept and does well with the writing itself but it needs a bit more to push this book to be a really good read. Still I may see what this author writes further down the road because the potential is there.
