Grace Beneath the Frost

Rate this book
Professional success. Personal failure. As a respected cancer specialist, Paul Webster knows what he's doing. At least, he does at work. His home life's another story.
Now he's been thrown into a spin by a patient's death and her unshakeable confidence in life beyond the grave.
He’s always dismissed Christians as simplistic fools but this woman didn't fit his stereotype. What if there is truth beyond what he can learn with lab tests and logic? And what will checking out that truth cost him? Grace Beneath the Frost is a soul-stirring contemporary Christian novel. Book 5 in the Grace series. If you like compelling Christian fiction, relatable characters, and real emotion, then you’ll love Christine Dillon’s inspiring series.

Christine Dillon's Grace series are my favourite set of books. They encapsulates everything I want to see in a book.

This book is the 5th book in the series. The story is life changing and heart touching. The characters are inspiring and real. The author did an amazing job even though it is the 5th book in the series, the story is still captivating. The story and faith illustrated in the book is beyond words.

If you love deep faith based stories, you'd love this one.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

There are dozens (maybe hundreds!) of authors now writing “Christian romance” novels which generally involve a man and a woman, one or both professing faith in Christ, who eventually fall in love. They are often predictable (though sometimes entertaining) and generally lack much depth of spiritual food for the soul.

Christine Dillon, on the other hand, writes God-stories. Stories of God wooing people to Himself. With all the thrill and emotions of a romance, but centered entirely on what our hearts and minds ought to be. Each of her characters comes from a unique past with unique prejudices and experiences, making each book of her Grace series a fascinating read.

This book follows an educated skeptic who is touched by a patient’s rock-solid faith through the trials of cancer. Through his journey we meet doubt and skepticism, mystery and mild suspense, fears and victory, and even a touch of romance. But most of all, we learn from his journey walking and talking with a God he’s not even sure exists.

An excellent read, and I love the ending, though some may disagree!

What do you do when your work life is going really well but your personal life stinks? This book guides you through the heartache and traumas of a very real situation.
The characters are believable and likeable and so realistic.
The main character, Paul, is challenged to re-evaluate his whole life, behaviour and everything he's believed.
Bible truths are revealed in such an engaging way that the reader is captivated and enticed to want to know more, but the book is not preachy or moralistic - it's so appropriate for today.
Wonderful book! I've only just finished it but I'm already planning to read it again!

Christine Dillon’s fifth book in the “Grace” series is another work of wonder.

Like her previous novels, this one continues to tackle the difficult themes of selfishness and pride; forgiveness and reconciliation; grace and redemption.

I found it particularly easy to relate to the main character, a 50-something year old bloke who thought he had it all: great career, great wife, great kids. Little does he realise that these are all gracious gifts from a generous God. Gifts to be treasured and nurtured, and not to be taken for granted.

As with Christine’s other books in this series, ‘Grace Beneath the Frost’ can be read as a self-contained, stand-alone story. Earlier references to characters and events don’t require any prior knowledge or an in-depth understanding of what’s gone before.

Yet, all five stories intertwine and overlap so seamlessly that it would be a shame not to enjoy the many complex characters Christine has so carefully brought to life throughout the series.

Characters who enjoy love but endure loss; who suffer pain yet pray patiently: who rejoice gladly for all the good things God has given them, in spite of their myriad flaws and failings.

And, if there’s one common theme that runs straight and true through all her books like a vein of precious gold, it’s grace. Grace so abundant it’s overwhelming.

Grace enough to melt the coldest heart.

Christine’s books are a wonderful encouragement to followers of Christ, especially in this novel which looks closely at discipleship and how we equip, model, and mentor younger Christians.

Yet it also poses a gentle challenge to non-believers: to look carefully at the person of Jesus Christ and thoughtfully consider his life-changing claims.

As with her last four novels, this one left me wanting more: more of her insightful and heart-warming characters; and much, much more of her God - our faithful God - who hears and answers prayer.

This 5th book in the Grace Series returns us to an earlier timeline, shortly after Esther's death. I wondered how this book would fit into the narrative after the resolved conflict within Esther's family in book 4.  Wonder no more, for Christine Dillon unveils yet another aspect of Esther's story and with her gentle teaching invites us to see the harvest possible even when a voice has been silenced on earth. The question, "does my life matter and what is my legacy", is central in this book.

We become privy to how lives are impacted after Esther's death. We are again treated to Dillon's brilliant storytelling where Esther's oncologist Paul and fellow cancer patient Rob, wrestle with the question of who Jesus really is. As both men embark on a similar path I very much enjoyed "meeting" Paul's wife and children. Although separated from his wife & children Dillon uses no tropes in developing Wendy, Lauren and Ben. The conflict of Paul's past and with his mother &  father added another unexpected and engaging plot twist.  Dillon so beautifully describes how anyone can find the missing connection to Jesus by simply reading the Bible and having a willing & open heart. (I think we have forgotten that and look to the Sunday pulpit to be the most likely place for conversion). All it takes is a catalyst, which is, of course, Esther for both Paul & Rob. The way Dillon writes these spiritual encounters is deeply moving, and serves as a reminder of the precious gift extended to all by God.

I have sung the praises of this series from the very beginning and say it again; this is Christian Fiction at its absolute finest. The theme of redemption is beautifully executed and the step back into an earlier timeline does not diminish this sequel, it is not a space filler. Issues like free will, disappointment, and personal responsibility are also represented well in this narrative. The message is loud and clear: both our life and death as a follower of Jesus are to be a testimony.  Our encounters with people are not random, and God works behind the scenes for our good.

Book 6 is already on my Kindle, so excited to see where "Grace Across the Miles" will take us.

I really liked Grace Beneath the Frost (and the way it ended). The first third or so I would give 4 stars and the rest 5 stars. I think the reason for this change in rating is that Paul is almost an entirely new character to the series and there was a bit of ground work that was needed to set up the rest of the story. The descriptions really involve me in the story and I feel like I am a spectator watching things play out as they happen. Many of the descriptions take me to times and places where I have experienced similar things. I love the challenges and issues the book explores and all the practical wisdom it brings and incorporates. I'll admit to tearing up on several occasions while reading Grace Beneath the Frost.

I think this book could easily be recommended a stand alone (much like Grace in Deep Waters), but is also a great addition to the 'Grace' series by Christine Dillon.

I was invited to help proofread this book and so received an advanced copy, however I am also eagerly awaiting the opportunity to purchase a hard copy of the book. For me it is a keeper and one to be recommended and lent out to friends and family for sure.

That classic illustration from C.S. Lewis about stories being a way of 'stealing past watchful dragons' (ie inhibitions or other set ideas) is most appropriate for 'Grace Beneath the Frost', as it has been for each book in this Grace series. I appreciate reading stories that edify my soul ... stories like 'Grace Beneath the Frost'.

The storyline was solid and kept me engaged throughout. There were evenings when I switched out the light much too late because I wanted to read 'just a little bit more'. That's always a sign of a good story.

I also very much enjoyed the descriptions of various places in which the stories took place. I found myself almost shivering in the mountains or could just about sense the sun on my face when on the water.

Although this is part of a series, it could be read as a standalone book. At the same time, I am so glad that this series continues. I have come to know and feel deeply for the characters.

Profoundly educational

What I love about this series is how relatable the characters and their lives are. Having come to faith in my 50’s helped me relate to Paul and his search for answers and understanding. His time with Pastor Stuart reminded me of my time with our Pastor and how he helped me. So I found this relationship not only relatable, but also educational and inspiring.
Relationships, whether marriage, friendship or parenting are complex and often challenging and I admire how Paul leaned on God’s wisdom and trust to deal with his children and his wife.
A beautiful story that challenges our wisdom and humility.

If you liked the God's Not Dead movies/books and A Case For Christ, you will love this!!! I don't know if it's a true story about Paul, but wow! His journey is amazing. It all started because of Esther's legacy. Praise God! Paul's skepticism is shown very well and the questions he asks are very valid. I highly recommend this book. Very well done! I received an advance copy of this book.
I was not required to give a positive opinion, any opinion is my own.

Christine Dillon’s latest fiction – a delightful read, full of challenge and truth. Esther’s legacy lives on as we now become entangled in the life of her specialist Dr Paul Webster – a man with deep levels of hurt and ‘frost’. Enjoy the Australian landscape as Paul’s adventures unfold through bushlands, suburbia and The Snowy Mountains. You will be moved, encouraged and challenged as you read ‘Grace Beneath the Frost.’ - Jane C

I just finished this, and my first thought was, "Oh, no." I didn't want it to be over. I care more about the main character than I expected to, and I'd thought he was a good guy in the first book.

I am amazed at how each of these books shows me something about my faith in a way that makes me stop and think about what I believe. I've been smiling and praying all afternoon!

What a brilliant book, very well written and explained. If you are a believer or none believer, you can learn from Christine's books.
I was very touched and rear all 4 books in the series.
I would recommend them to anyone seeking the truth about the love of Jesus.
I will certainly look to read more of her books.

This is the story of Paul who we met in the first book of the series. He is a sceptic when it comes to God and goes out to prove or disprove what Esther had tried to teach him, a bit like C.S. Lewis. He also encounters some truths about his life that took him by surprise. He becomes reconciled with someone from his past and seeks to restore his marriage. I picked up a few tidbits about the Bible I had not seen before. Enjoyed all the books in this series I highly recommend all of them but be sure to start with book #1.

I adored this book. Again the storyline and characters are so real and believable and love how the gospel is so naturally presented through Joy's letters. I didn't want it to end.

This one "spoke to me" as have absent father and cold mother issues too. I loved how the book took you on a sceptic's journey in a real and unvarnished manner. Lots of really good examples; great letters; and useful prayers. Gives extra glimpses of Australian flora and fauna too For a virtual experience.
Well done. My favourite so far.

What a great add to the Grace series. To see the residual effects others have on the lives of those around them even after they have passed on. A beautiful story of seeking God, finding Him and allowing Him to work in you and through you.

I've read the earlier books in the Grace series and continue to be extremely satisfied with Christine Dillon's storytelling ability. The story is well written, the characters believable and the situations and challenges that face them are realistic and emotive. Here is the story about a professional man who has worked hard to achieve his station in life, now faced with some seemingly impossible situations. As a medical specialist working with cancer patients, he has always kept himself apart from becoming emotionally involved, but one young patient issued him a challenge to consider the role of Jesus in his life.

The journey of discovery that Paul, the central character, embarks on follows a logical path, with each new revelation building upon the lessons learned from the earlier ones. He has some serious challenges to deal with which affect all his personal and professional relationships. He makes mistakes but overcomes the obstacles in such a way that he is able to pick himself up. The process teaches him that he has relied upon himself, focused on himself, and estranged himself from everyone who matters to him. It takes a few coincidences to change his mind about whether to believe in miracles, and he is still asking lots of practical questions while opening his eyes to the unfolding new way of life that is being revealed to him.

As with real life, there is no magical resolution to overcoming the challenges. This book contains clear guidelines for anyone wanting to explore how to approach a conversation with someone seeking answers, as well as information about learning how to pray. There is valuable information about changing how we pray so that the emphasis turns away from what we want, focusing instead on what is best for the person who is being prayed for.

I was very excited when I found out that there was a new book in Christine Dillon's Grace series, but at the same time it took me a while to warm up to this story and be fully drawn into it. I think this was because it is such a long time since I read Esther's part of the story and had forgotten so much. Also, the meetings between Paul and Dan felt awkward - which they definitely would have been - and made me feel a bit uncomfortable. But as I started to recall events from the previous books, to warm up to Paul as a person, as well as appreciating the wisdom of people that came his way, like Joy and Stuart, I became fully engrossed in the story and found it hard to put down. I enjoyed getting to know Paul, Wendy, Lauren, Ben and Russ, feeling their pains, struggles and triumphs. As I made my way through Grace Beneath the Frost, I had many ideas in my head as to how the story would, and should, end. Thankfully, Christine had very different ideas to me and after I read the final chapter, I felt that it was just perfect - so much better than anything I had imagined or wished for!

As always, I felt both encouraged and challenged by the Biblical truths that Christine wove into this story, and was left with many ideas to ponder. This was particularly so in regards to prayer. Whenever you come face to face with God and His word, there is so much to learn and so much to prayerfully work towards.

I read this book some time ago and really enjoyed this story about Paul, a man we briefly met in Grace in Strange Disguise. This is a stand alone book, although will be made much richer if you know the other characters from previous books ( especially Paul's former patient Esther McDonald).
Dillon's writing keeps getting better - this book contains many spiritual truths and disciplines that would benefit any reader to explore in more details. These books are wonderful for their relatability and realness, not fake romance or pseudo-happy families. I love that Dillon doesn't sugarcoat the Christian life ( it's not all wine and roses if you follow Jesus) but portrays the search for truth and also the reality of living out the Christian life amidst the pain and discord in our world.
You won't be disappointed to read any of her 'Grace' series.

How does the successful professional go from unbelief to faith? Christine provides a wonderful story that isn't too predictable or stale, but lively and realistic - one that shows how the Christian message can change someone's life. Christine doesn't gloss over the costs of following Jesus either that the main character (Paul) faces either.

As always, Christine brings out the many intense emotions that inevitably come with such a life-changing story - it ended up being a very enjoyable emotional rollercoaster. Quite hard to put down. I also enjoyed the ending - which wasn't quite your expected feel-good ending, but a far more realistic one that kept the story grounded.

I so appreciated and enjoyed the 5th book in the “Grace” series. As always, it was a page-turner that taught and reminded me of really helpful things through the characters and their dialogues. As someone who can never remember not assenting to the gospel, it was particularly inspiring to enter into the journey of a middle-aged adult encountering Jesus for the first time through the gospel of Luke. And of course Joy Wong did not fail to disappoint with her wisdom on the topic of opposition, and just her awesome-ness in general. I learn so much from how she handles tricky topics. Highly recommended reading for anyone who likes a good story that will inspire them to look for answers in God.

This is the 5th book in the series, and I have read and loved them all. Ms. Dillon has a wonderful way of leading the reader through the steps to understanding the Bible and Christianity in ways that open the world to us. This story helps to lead the main character Paul through the steps of learning to pray. I highly recommend these fictional stories to anyone who is yearning to learn more about following Jesus. I just purchased and am about to begin the 6th and final book in the Grace series.

This book is another captivating story and I thoroughly enjoyed it. A doctor and skeptic, who comes to faith through God's grace, discovers the joy of prayer and reading the bible, and sharing his faith with his family and friends. It inspired me to keep praying because God is working to change people.

Authentic relationships

Once again we meet real people with messy lives who are seeking more. The Christians challenge their friends to investigate Jesus. They gently answer questions and walk with their friends as they struggle with everyday life. You will be encouraged to take seriously the claims of Christianity without feeling coerced.

Just finished reading this on Kindle. I enjoyed the character of this oncologist, and how he was forced to wrestle with the christian faith because of a patient who had challenged him.

Even though we had christian chat, I didn't mind. I felt it challenged a non-christian to think seriously about important issues relating to life.

Great Read!!!!

I love how the author developed each character. And I love how realistically she handled Paul becoming a Christian. Again, very realistic. There were more than a couple of story lines going on but they were all very clear and they did not cause any confusion. It’s a really good read!
