Daxas has reached rank eight. He has conquered and subsumed a second dungeon increasing his power and pulled one over the Divine Lords in the process. However, he is aware this will bring new difficulties to his door and the Divine Lords are unlikely to take their humiliation well. He is going to need to continue his plans of expansion which now includes a second dungeon as well as an adventurer guild, the Dark Moon Rising, ready to answer his commands, well mostly ready. There is also the not so small matter of his unfinished business with Jen'Zadeer Shadestar. She remains just out of his grasp, but not for much longer.
(The story contains Gamelit elements like stats and levelling.)
Okay here we finally get some challenge for our main character. In fact there's a real whiplash of "oh shit" and then even more "oh shit", and things feel actually dangerous for once. That alone, plus we get to see his dungeon really work for it. Also Daxas's influence is built beyond his dungeon and I enjoyed reading about that.
The sex-to-action pacing is much better. On that front it gets more dominance/submission-y, with an addition of a rabbit-girl in a very, very hot scene. Unfortunately while the sexual seduction and conquering is great, she doesn't get any real chance to shine.
The one downside is Jen'Zadeer. The series has been building up to Daxas coming for her, and it should be no surprise he gets her. The problem comes because he has to "break" her, and it works too well. The "breaking" is actually funny, believable and kosher--but her personality sort of dies. Outside of the occasional curse at their enemies, she has no spunk or spark left. I understand smothering any sense of rebellion or haughtiness, but so too goes any sass, spine or real playful heat. Something like Soria from Monster Girl Dungeon. Once she's broken, Jen'Zadeer rolls over like a good dog, and that's disappointing.
Even with that, this is to me the strongest book of the series.
It was okay Did it change or did I? Because I liked books one and two, but book 3 was a struggle to get into. After I got past the slow start the momentum of the story carried me along, but I never felt as into it as I had been. The MC seems like a much bigger creep, his smirking cocky attitude seems smarmier, and his subjugated girlfriends seem more cringey in their servility. There are some lecherous villains in this book that do the whole "I'm gonna make you mine and your gonna love it and beg for more" spiel, but the MC's words and deeds are indistinguishable, and just as skin crawly. But you know what? maybe it's just me and you won't notice any difference.
I didn't enjoy this as much as the first one. I know he is a sex dungeon, but this book seems to be the protagonist being lead around by his crotch, while reacting to other people's machinations.
Hopefully the next book will have him back to forging a way forward for himself and his people.
The Wolf King's Lair book three. Is an awesome series. That I've really come to love. The Wolf King and his harem. Are all fantastic characters. Who are really fun to read about. I can't wait for book four to come out.
I thought this was another good addition for this series. A lot more action in second half and it felt like maybe the MC was facing more of a challenge than he has previously.
