This is an incredible anthology of poems, and each individual poem is bursting with color and life, but it’s best taken in small chunks. There’s understandably a great deal of repetition, so it’s difficult to read more than a handful of these at a time. I was surprised at how easy the poems are to read today, though. Although there are some questionable passages, very few displayed any real negative or disparaging sentiments; they’re mostly positive affirmations about a particular way of life and the specifics of that era. It’s high fantasy for the Old West.
