Text-to-World Connection

This book is a great reminder of knowing the earth gives us everything we need. The world is currently telling us that it is sick. If people would just stop and realize how much damage we done, maybe the earth can begin to heal. During the height of the pandemic, the earth was recovering and the skies were clearer. The earth begin to show us the gentle side of it again. Now that the pandemic is over, the earth is pleading for us to listen again. Beautiful book!

A simple book with simple text whose illustrations speak as loud as the words. Perfect for an Earth Day gift for kids ages 4-10. May spark discussions of how we can protect our precious environment.

This lovely rhyming picture book follows the changing of the seasons and shows children and their families enjoying, respecting, and giving back to nature.

The majority of the text is done in rhyming couplets, with exceptions for the bits that talk about the Earth giving. I think it all flows rather well.

I like the illustrations in this one. There's plenty to look at! The pictures go through the changing seasons, highlighting various activities that are common in the different times of year. The cast of characters is diverse, and if you look carefully, you can see the different families pop up repeatedly in the varying seasons.

Rhyming picture books don't always work for me, but this one does. The meter is decent, the illustrations are a wonderful accompaniment to the text, and the overall message is a good one. This would be a nice one to add to a collection of Earth Day picture books, but the message can be enjoyed and appreciated all year long.

Quotable moment:

“Still, the Earth gives more.”

The Earth Gives More by Sue Fliess is a bright, thought-provoking poetry book about everything the Earth gives us. It talks about different things you can do on Earth such as feeling the wind blow through your hair, chasing the clouds and swimming in the ocean. It also talks about the different changes that take place on Earth during the different seasons, such as colorful leaves and stormy weather. One additional topic this book talks about is how we can “help the Earth thrive and grow.” How can we do this? Read this excellent poetry picture book for some ideas!

This book is a great read aloud for students in first grade through third grade. It can be used in the classroom in many ways. One way it can be used is to help teach students about the four seasons. The teacher could read this book aloud as an opener or launch to a lesson on seasons. Another way this book can be used is for an Earth Day lesson to show students what all the Earth gives us. The teacher could then have students do an activity where they state different ways they can protect the Earth so that it is able to continue to “give us more.” An additional way this book can be used in the classroom is as a mentor text to teach rhyming.

The Earth Gives More is a beautiful celebration of nature gift to us through the seasons. Swim in the water, play in the sand, leap in a leaf pile, sled and ski are just a few of the fun ways we can engage with the great outdoors. The illustrations showcase a diverse cast of characters and families enjoying, respecting and giving back to the earth.

💡This is a great text for children and students to make connections!

Why is this important? Children who make connections while reading have a deeper comprehension of the story. It is important to give children the opportunity to share their own experiences and connect it to the story they are reading/listening to.

💡 While reading and listening to The Earth Gives More, ask your child/students one of the following questions:
▫️I loved the Winter activities in this story, can you make a connection to a winter activity that you have tried?
▫️Did any of the Summer activities remind you of something you love to do?
▫️I noticed a child having fun in the Fall jumping into a leaf pile, have you done this before? Tell me about what else you like to do in the Fall?
▫️This book showcased the great things we can explore in all four seasons. Sue Fliess

I like the ideas behind the text but it's not my favorite. I do like that this book is about so many outdoor activities you can do throughout the seasons and helping to care for the earth.

I also like that it not only has a wide range of racial diversity but also has a character in a wheelchair who appears a few times. This is a very important type of representation because it allows those who are in wheelchairs to see themselves reflected as a "kid just being a kid" (with no special focus on the fact that something is different) and also helps to expose and normalize kids in wheelchairs to kids who are not and may not often be around those who are. The little girl in this book is shown trying to catch leaves with her sister, watering the garden, and playing ball.

Watch the seasons change as you turn the pages; autumn and winter are especially identifiable. The text rhymes on many pages and the line "still, the earth gives more" repeats throughout the book. I enjoy the illustrations; people of different ages and skin tones are included throughout as well as a child who uses a wheelchair. The illustrations on three pages include humans picking up litter. The message about taking care of the earth could have been more direct and insistent. I could see including this book during our Earth Week lesson plan, but as an additional book, not as the main book we focus on. I would borrow this book from the public library again over buying it for our class.

Rhyming text takes us through the seasons in a neighborhood, focusing on what nature is doing during different seasons and what people can be doing to take care of the Earth. Clean up the beaches, use fallen leaves to help fertilize your flower beds, etc. This book is a celebration of all the Earth gives us and a plea for us to do what we can to give back to the Earth.

Don't know, something about this just left me wanting a bit more. It has lovely pictures with plenty of diversity and charming details; flows through the seasons beautifully; the rhymes aren't annoying; and it talks about simple ways of caring for our Earth; and yet....

It just didn't click with me.

Nature: Environmental appreciation and protection

Action-filled rhyming couplets celebrate all that nature has to offer us through the year. While multicultural families joyfully interact with the natural world, Fliess periodically encourages us to do our part and "help the Earth to thrive and grow." An excellent addition to units on kindness.

"Do your part. Use what you know. Help the earth to thrive and grow."

There is so much beauty in our world, even in simple things. The bright sun of the summertime beach, the swirling of red and yellow in autumn, the coziness of winter hibernation. No matter what we give to the earth, it always gives more. That's why we need to take care of it.

I think this is a perfect picture book. It's about the changing seasons, the goodness of the natural world and it's a call to do what we can to protect our world. The words are spare, the artwork is lovely and the rhymes are precise.

This book is wonderful to talking about the different seasons. The story goes through all the seasons of the year, the sun, rain, and snow. It is a great story about how the Earth changes and how it affects us. There are also many questions you can ask children about after reading this story.
