Gretta Mulrooney (1952-2023) was a British author of mystery, thriller, and crime novels. Born and raised in London to Irish parents, Mulrooney began publishing novels in her 30s, working with publishers such as Poolberg Press, Harper Collins, and Joffre Books.
Murder in Mallow Cottage is the third instalment in the Detective Inspector Siv Drummond series set in the small town of Berminster, Sussex. Siv is on her way to attend Berminster crematorium as the funeral of fallen colleague DC Lisa Flore is about to take place there. They hadn't worked together long when she was tragically killed at New Year by a drunk driver who collided with her mowing her down with his vehicle as she strolled along the pavement. But before it can take place, the crematorium manager, Toby Foxwell, discovers the deceased body of a man sprawled out on the front steps beneath a line of wreaths. He looked to have been strangled and is later identified as 27-year-old Eugene Warren who moved from Berminster as a teenager after attending Fulbrook Upper School. As Siv and her team investigate the murder, another man goes missing; 28-year-old Henry Kilgore had attended the same school as Warren and they had been friends during their formative years.
The incidents, therefore, appear to be connected. During the investigation and interviews of those who knew the two victims, a link is forged with a death that happened years prior in the town when a young girl died after ingesting alcohol and party drugs during a school holiday shindig. It's clear that there's a conspiracy to keep what happened a secret, so Siv and the team certainly have their work cut out for them. This is an intriguing, engrossing and original mystery and with few suspects, Siv must work her team doggedly to get to the truth. There are ample twists and turns to keep you guessing until the morning light and a few red herrings too which alter the direction of the plot. Mulrooney does a staggering job of keeping the perpetrator under wraps until near the end and even then the culprit and the information that unravels about the links between the cases leaves you in shock. It's compulsive, cleverly plotted and features interesting, well-developed characters. Highly recommended.
I don't know if my having not read the previous books in this series hindered my ability to enjoy this one, but I struggled to stay engaged throughout this book. 🤷🏻♀️ The plethora of characters made it hard to keep everyone straight. On top of that, I struggled to find DI Siv Drummond likable. On a more positive note, this is a relatively quick read, and the author does a good job leading us on a merry chase of red herrings until all is revealed.
He wasn't scheduled to be cremated today .. someone else was. Eugene Warren is found on the steps of the local crematorium.
DI Siv Drummond and her colleagues are called upon to investigate. Looking into the victim's background and talking to friends and family, Drummond finds that his closest friend is missing. A victim .. or a killer?
Eugene's car is located .. and a mysterious message is found. "Remember the fun at Mallow Cottage"
Drummond and her team have a real mystery on their hands and she suspects there will be more killings if they can't figure out what connects the victim to Mallow Cottage.
This action-packed page turner houses an intriguing mystery/crime filled with stand-out characters. Drummond is a superb protagonist, she's smart, she's fierce, she's dedicated to her profession. There's plenty of multi-layered suspects, some of who are harboring secrets from the past. The ending is unpredictable. Although 3rd in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone. I would recommend reading in order, the backstories are well worth reading.
Many thanks to the author / Joffe Books / Books n All Book Promotions / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Eugene Warren is found at the local crematorium. But he shouldn't be there. Nobody knew he was dead. Detective Siv Drummond and her team are on the case. But the only person the victim seemed to be friends with is missing. Now the search is on to track down Henry Kilgore. But what they find is Eugene's car and a cryptic message: Remember fun at Mallow Cottage.
A crematorium employee makes a gruesome discovery, and another man disappears. Is there a connection? There are no suspects and people are holding back information. The prologue features the death of a young girl.
Filled with plenty of twists and well developed characters, this is an intriguing read. Is there a lnk to the two murder cases? I like Siv Drummond, she's tenacious in all she does. There's a few surprises along the way and all the loose ends are tied up by the end. The story held my attention throughout.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #JoffeBooks and the author #GretaMulrooney for my ARC of #MurderInMallowCottage in exchange for an honest review.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy of Murder in Mallow Cottage, the third novel to feature DI Siv Drummond and her team, set in the fictional Sussex town of Berminster.
A man’s murdered body is found at the entrance to the crematorium. He is later identified as Eugene Warren, who left Berminster as a teenager and has stayed off the grid since then. As Siv and the team investigate the murder Henry Kilgore is reported missing and he is a school friend of Eugene’s.
I thoroughly enjoyed Murder in Mallow Cottage, which is an absorbing read with several twists and turns. It is told from various points of view, mainly Siv and the team but it also examines the emotions of those left to cope. This latter I found fascinating as secrets come out and reactions vary, casting light on their personalities.
I found the plot engrossing as Siv chases links and a motive. The prologue gives the reader a big hint about where these might lie and there’s nothing new in it. This did not put a dent in my enthusiasm as the novel has a well concealed perpetrator and a hint doesn’t cover all the twists, turns and developments incorporated into the narrative. Incidentally I thought the final reveal was excellent as it took me by complete surprise.
All good series move their characters on as time goes by. I am totally invested in Siv Drummond by now, so I’m pleased to see the green shoots of optimism in her character after a long mourning period for her husband. She’s smart and dedicated so this is good news. Her mother is still causing her problems and she’s caustically funny on that subject. I’m already looking forward to the next novel to see how this situation develops.
Murder in Mallow Cottage is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
A dead body at the local crematorium. Nothing unusual about that except Eugene Warren was found under some flower wreaths on the steps of the chapel, wasn’t meant to be there. Detective Siv Drummond and her team are on the case. Then the only person who knew the victim, Henry Kilgore goes missing that same day. The single clue they find is the dead man’s car containing a holiday brochure and a cryptic message: Remember fun at Mallow Cottage. This is third outing for Siv & another well written intriguing read. I love Siv who doesn't give up & who is now starting to see light at the end of the tunnel following her husband’s death. I love how her character is developing & starting to move forward. There were twists & turns along the way to the final reveal, which did surprise me & I didn’t see coming. An engrossing read & I look forward to more in the series My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
DI Siv Drummond and her partner DI Ali Carlin investigate an oddly staged murder scene in The Murder in Mallow Cottage, in which the body of a man is placed on the steps of the crematorium with three wreaths placed on it. Then the son of a business woman and vacation rental owner in the town, Henry Kilgore, goes missing while he is in town to celebrate his friend's engagement. Is the motive for these murders based on recent events or do they go back much further in time?
While this is a relatively short and fast-paced novel, just 25 chapters, I struggled to feel invested in the story. I believe this is because I didn't find the main character, Siv Drummond, to be very likeable. She is grieving the loss of her husband and appears to have retreated into a shell, which is understandable. However, I found the descriptions and attitude displayed toward her partner, Ali, to be rather negative and judgmental of his weight and eating habits, verging on fat-shaming. He is supposed to be her colleague and friend, besides being a very engaging character; therefore I don't understand the lack of empathy and kindness toward him. There is also a large number of characters introduced and it became a struggle for me to tell them apart and keep them all straight in my mind.
Ultimately, this just wasn't a satisfying read for me, although a reader who had previously read the first two novels in the series might have a more positive take on it. Thank you to Joffe Books and NetGalley for providing me with the opportunity to read it.
Siv Drummond is back in this stunning addition to the series. While this is book 3 they do work perfectly as stand alone.
A body is left on the steps of the crematorium, no ID and nobody seems to have missed him. However, a young man is missing but it would be too easy for it to be the same man and nothing for Siv Drummond's team.
Henry, the missing man, and his friends are spending a few days in a cottage owned by his family. The fact the group are not based here is just one problem of many for the team. The other problems include a number of secrets being kept hidden.
Filled to the brim with suspense this story is a roller coaster ride of twists and turns as Siv and her team try to uncover the motive behind the murder and at the same time try to find the missing man.
The characters continue to develop and their background fleshes out nicely over the course of the book. Siv is still grieving for her dead fiance, Ed, and working through her grief and trying to move on with her life ads interest to the story. Other aspects of the characters in this series are also brought in to the story.
This story has it all great characters that are well drawn, intrigue, secrets, drugs, revenge, guilt and relationships all play a part in gripping read that keeps the pages turning.
A gripping, suspenseful read with plenty going on!
When a body turns up at the local crematorium, it’s a little different from usual; laid out on the steps and covered in flower wreaths, this one did not come via the usual channels. Detective Inspector Siv Drummond and her team roll their sleeves and but before they get too far with their latest case, a friend of the deceased goes missing. The only clue they have to work on is the deceased’s car with a brochure for a local holiday cottage and a cryptic message. How does it all fit together?
It’s never easy to come to a series a couple of books in and I must admit I struggled a bit with getting to know the team on this one, but before long I was completely engrossed in the crime investigation and they all just slipped into place. By the end I was rather fond of Siv and her colleagues! Add in some office politics and the pressure is on. The mystery is beautifully plotted and written and kept me gripped all the way through, but I have to hold my hands up and say I didn’t solve it until it was in front of me in black and white. Thrilling and riveting, definitely a series to follow and one I’m happy to give 4.5*.
Two men are found murdered and it all ties to a years-ago death of a young woman.
Siv Drummond is in charge of her very fine team. She is more than a little chagrined when she finds out that her mother has moved in with her boss, Mortimer. Then, her usual partner Ali faces a crisis in the middle of the investigation.
It turns out to be a very complicated investigation. There are no suspects, then there are many. No one seems to be telling all they know. The identity of the killer turns out to be a complete surprise.
Ms. Mulrooney writes very well. Her characters are fully fleshed out and interesting. This book is perhaps her best so far. I very much look forward to the next in this series.
I want to thank NetGalley and Joffe Books for forwarding to me a copy of this very fine book for me to read, enjoy and review. The opinions expressed here are solely my own.
This third book in the Siv Drummond series lives up to its predecessors. It’s an easy, entertaining read that is better if you read the series in sequence.
Murder In Mallow Cottage by Gretta Mulrooney. Joffe Books. Having not read this author before, I did not know what to expect. I was hooked from the first. A dead body on the steps of the crematorium in a historic cemetery. Zowie! The main character is a detective with a complicated personal life and she lives in a circus wagon. Her colleagues have issues too but they all work well together except for the fact that her boss is dating her mother, her terrible mother. I have not read the previous two books in this series but I plan to remedy that asap. She also has another series that sounds interesting. My only complaint was that the ending seemed a bit rushed. Thanks to Netgalley for this excellent read.
This is the third story in this detective series set in Sussex and each book gets better and better as the reader gets to know more about the great set of characters featured here. Recently widowed and still grieving, Siv has moved from a high profile role in London's Metropolitan Police to take up a post at a slower pace in her old home seaside town of Berminster. This was where she and her sister were raised by their father after their chaotic Finnish mother Mutsi dumped them finally to run off with yet another lover. Since her arrival she has already investigated two baffling murder cases and this one proves to be no different. A body turns up at Berminster Crematorium. Nothing unusual there except this one was laid outside minus a coffin, covered with wreaths and had been murdered. The discovery is made more difficult for DI Siv Drummond and her loyal team of DS Ali Carlin and DC Patrick Hill by the fact that it was the very day they were saying goodbye to one of their own, DC Lisa Flore, killed by a drunk driver. When the victim, Eugene, is identified, they find out he was childhood friends with another man, Henry, who has mysteriously gone missing from his mum’s holiday rental whilst on the way to visit a third friend of theirs, a man with a prison record. The dead man had not visited his hometown for years so what has suddenly brought him back? His car is found at one of Henry’s mother’s other holiday homes with a strange message inside. Is it a warning? Where is Henry now and is his disappearance connected to the murder? Can Siv and her team make sense of the evidence in front of them or will they have to delve right back into the past to come up with the solution to this case? Siv is starting to fit in really well now, largely thanks to the warm and caring nature of Ali who contrasts well with her sharp edges and unwillingness to open up. With her boss DCI Drummond now dating her mother who is back on the scene and Tommy Castles still rumoured to be wanting to move back to his old station, life is testing for Siv but at least she has Bartel, the Polish builder friend she made in book one, for good company and with the others in her team beginning to like and respect her, she is proving to be a great boss and leader. The plot was clever, twisty and kept me guessing right the way through to the end which still took me by surprise. This is a solid story of very likeable detectives working hard and piecing together of all the clues to reach a satisfying and plausible ending. Highly recommended and I am looking forward to reading more books in this series. 5*
I have been a fan of Gretta’s work for a little while now. I have read each and every book that she has released to date. I especially love her new series, which features Detective Inspector Siv Drummond. ‘Murder In Mallow Cottage’ is the third in the series and it is another cracker of a read and then some. I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Murder In Mallow Cottage’ but more about that in a bit. As soon as I saw Gretta’s name on the front cover of the book, I just knew that I had to start reading it immediately. When I started reading, I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to put the book to one side. My Kindle wasn’t exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I just couldn’t bear to miss a single second of the story. I became so wrapped up in the story that I lost all track of time and just how quickly I was getting through the story. All too quickly I reached the end of the story and I had to say goodbye to DI Siv Drummond. I found ‘Murder In Mallow Cottage’ to be a gripping read, which kept me guessing and which kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. ‘Murder In Mallow Cottage’ is superbly written but then that is true of all of Gretta’s books. She certainly knows how to grab the reader’s attention and draw them into what proves to be one hell of a story. For me, the story hit the ground running and maintained a fast pace throughout. I love the way in which Gretta makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story themselves and at the heart of the action. Reading ‘Murder In Mallow Cottage’ felt like being on a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster with many twists and turns along the way. In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Murder In Mallow Cottage’ and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I hope to read much more of Gretta’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
Toby Foxwell arrives at work at the crematorium and sees a bunch of wreaths at the main entrance. Getting closer, he sees they are balanced on a dead body. Meanwhile, Henry Kilgore, his girlfriend Saffie, and college friends, Viv and Damien, are staying in a cottage Henry's Mom Imelda rents out. After dinner the first night Henry, Viv, and Damien go to a pub while Saffie goes to sleep. Early the next morning when Saffie wakes up, Henry isn't there. She finds a message on her phone that he went to his Mom's so he wouldn't wake her. However, no one can find Henry!
DI Siv Drummond begin looking for Henry and looking into the dead man at the cemetery. For a long time, the dead man is not identified, but they finally find out he is Eugene Warren, a school friend of Henry, and not exactly the nicest person in his school days. They finally find Eugene's car near Mallow Cottage (another of Imelda's rentals) and a brochure with a note saying "Remember fun at Mallow Cottage." Shortly thereafter, Henry's body is found hidden behind Mallow Cottage.
This is the third book in the series, and I haven't yet read the first two. There were a lot of characters in the story, and I had a little trouble keeping track of all of them. I have just purchased the first two and hope to catch up. The story was good, although other than the police, the characters didn't seem very likable.
A man's body is found murdered on the steps of a crematorium. Another man is missing. Detective Inspector Siv Drummond needs to work out the connection between the two men so she can uncover the motive and find the killer... Murder in Mallow Cottage is the third book from Gretta Mulrooney to feature Siv Drummond and her team but it is the first that I have read. There are mentions about personal plotlines which I assume were included in previous books. Siv is a great lead detective and character. She frequently chats to her deceased husband and she is constantly irritated by her mother who just happens to be dating her superior officer. Siv is deeply caring about her fellow police officers and is determined to find out the truth so that the victims can receive justice. There are plenty of twists and turns as links between the two men are established and explored. Many of the characters are not entirely truthful with the police, trying to portray themselves in a positive light but potentially hiding relevant information or even secrets about their own involvement. Both the police and the suspects were written in a realistic way and their behaviour and dialogue seemed natural. Murder in Mallow Cotage is an enjoyable police procedural novel.
Eugene Warren was a typical rebellious teen~ager more so than most (though he did not start as that). Aside from having sex with as many girls as would tolerate his unkempt self, he also dealt in drugs... ergo he had a source he called "The Wheel". Then one night at Henry Kilgore's mother's for rent cottage, something tragic happened that made him leave Berminster and swore that he would never come back. He turned his life around and adopted a nomadic existence, became interested in birds and nature conservation, even baked and sold well~liked pies and yet he returned to Berminster and got himself killed. Why?
p.s. ~ The lesson here would be... despite Eugene Warren's deep and genuine attempts of Atonement and Redemption, such were never enough when dealing with a Warped and pathetic mind. Same with Henry Kilgore... though he did not feel guilt, he just wanted to forget their shared past. This author has a keen understanding of human flaws and the totality of a person's psychological make~up that make her characters real and sometimes disgusting depending on one's moral compass and maybe culture.
Very likeable team of detectives. Her writing flows very nicely. I have only one complaint and it is probably irrelevant to most people. Being a huge animal lover, I am always nervous when I read a book by a writer new to me, and how the animals will be treated if they appear in books. I know several authors I trust completely to treat the animal's welfare humanely and even sympathetically. I was disappointed in this authors last book by how she handled the fate of a dog. She did hold out a little hope for the fate of the dog that appeared in this book. I know it's very silly of me to worry about animals in a non-fiction book, but I'm still shattered by Bambi, which I read almost 70 years ago. I realize most of the people in books are fictitious, and I can remain semi-detached from them most of the time, but I'm unable to do the same with animals. Other than this personal issue, I find Mulrooney's writing to be excellent and the storylines are quite unique. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone looking for a good police procedural. I would also highly recommend her Tyrone Swift series.
DI. Siv Drummond finds herself and her team find themselves called to the local crematorium when a males body is discovered on the steps outside. The body has been covered with floral wreaths. Whilst discovering the identity a report of a missing man comes in. The missing man is Henry Kilgore who along with two friends and his girlfriend are staying at one of his mothers holiday cottages in Berminster. The dead man is positively identified as one Eugene Warren, an old school friend of Henry, who left the area as a teenager. Could there be a connection between the two cases? Will they track down Henry, more to the point will he be alive? During the inquiry people who knew them both provide details linking them to a cold case involving the death of a young girl, it seems the more they look into this one the more complicated it becomes. An absorbing murder mystery that had me guessing till the end. Many thanks to Joffe books for the chance to read this as an ARC in return for my honest opinion.
I want to thank NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for allowing me to read and review this book, ‘Murder at Mallow Cottage’.
DI Siv Drummond has her own problems to deal with (the death of her husband, a new job in her old hometown, and her mother who just moved in with her DCI boss) when a body is found at the local crematorium. When a second person is found to be missing (a friend of the dead person), her team is forced to go in two different directions to solve these seemingly related cases. When the interviews of people who knew the two men seem to point to an event in the past, the team must dig deeper in order to solve an old case, as well.
This is the third book in the series featuring DI Siv Drummond by Gretta Mulroony and fits in very well as a British police procedural. The cast of characters is varied and the storyline is well developed.
This us a very engaging series. Deftly woven together plot. Or should I say, intricately folded and crafted. I like the Origami past time of Siv. I like how she thinks. J love the home she's made for herself. I particularly respect the grief she is learning to make peace with. Third in the series and still strong story line. I'm looking forward to a fourth. I won't give away any spoilers. This is a strong plot headed by a strong DI and her small team are a very worthy duo of loyal and likeable guys. I highly recommend this series. I would suggest readig them in order so you can see and fell the personal growth this DI is experiencing. Incrementally she is folding her life into a strong structure not unlike the specimens she so carefully designs with her Origami creations.
This is the third in the Detective Siv Drummond series and, as soon as I’d finished reading it, I bought the first two books! Each book can easily be read as a standalone, though.
The story starts with a body being found at the crematorium – but not in the usual place, instead it was discovered on the steps and covered in floral wreaths. Someone else goes missing, and there’s a connection between the two people and they, in turn, are connected to a death in the town a few years ago.
I was hooked from the start and had difficulty putting it down. Brilliantly written with a very clever plot.
Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for an advance reader copy in return for an honest review.
This series is just gets better with each book. This time DI Siv Drummond is called out when a body is found at the local crematorium - not so strange because it isn't in a coffin! Then the son of a local business woman , who is in town with his friends for a holiday, goes missing. Nobody seems to know anything and with not too many clues to go on, Siv and her team struggle to find out what is going on. Really tight plot and yet as the reader, you will probably not guess the killer until the end. Add to this the ongoing issues with Siv and her mother, who is also dating her boss, and you have a great read. Thanks to Joffe Books for the ARC to review.
While this book works well as a standalone, I recommend starting with the first one in the series. It is satisfying to evolve along with Siv Drummond as she moves out of her deep grieving stage and into the role of top investigator in the seaside town in UK, and "guv" to her team that helps her solve the crimes. This was a good mystery, one with many characters that you knew all knew each other, even if they didn't admit it at first. With so many characters, it helps to know Siv and her team and her family dynamics as she investigates one, no two, gruesome deaths. A good read.
Another late night where I have found myself stuck in a book that I don’t want to put down.
Although this is the third instalment the author has written this so well that you wouldn’t realise. What starts as a strange murder - the body left with wreaths on the steps of the local crematorium. Then a missing person - the story twists and turns rapidly where you find yourself thinking alongside the main character, Siv - how are the murdered linked??
A cracking good read - and looking forward to reading more of this author’s work.
Siv Drummond is heading up an investigation into a body found on the steps of a crematorium , and the team also gains a missing person enquiry , the plot thickens when it becomes apparent there is a link between the two men. I like the protagonist she is a strong and complex character and the writing is of a high calibre and keeps the readers interest with the twists and turns through the story. It kept me guessing right through to the conclusion. The book is an absorbing and enjoyable read , I look forward to the next in the series. Thanks to NetGalley and Joffe Books.
MURDER IN MALLOW COTTAGE kicks off with a horrific tragedy. A Crematorium employee is greeted by a macrabe, gruesome discovery. A man out for a good time mysteriously vanishes. Is there a connection? Who's responsible? Trying to solve this conundrum will place you in a maze with almost all dead ends trying to follow all the twists and turns to a shocking ending.
Loving this series, I've read all Grettas books and can highly recommend them. Fabulous characters who you really invest in and excellent storylines, like the Tyrone series which I am missing and hoping there will be more of. This book grips you from the start and keeps you guessing all the way to the end, hence I found difficult to put down. Loved it and can't wait for the next book.
An intriguing murder mystery mostly centered around a Victorian cemetary and the characters who work there. The prologue features the death of a young girl. Another exciting though sad case for DI Siv Drummond. I loved the references to Walthamstow Wetlands and Lockwood Reservoir. In all, well thought out with plenty of surprises.
I enjoyed the DI Siv Drummond series and the various character development throughout the series. Mulrooney is also good at dropping clues throughout the series’ murder investigations that lead you to the suspect; but you really have to pay attention to spot those clues. For me, that’s the best part about Mulrooney’s novels because the suspects were not some random characters that just crawled out from under the woodwork at the end of the novel.
