The Great Jahy, the Dark Lord’s right-hand woman, has fallen into the human world…and fallen low! After enduring many struggles and the results of her questionable decisions, however, she has finally managed to restore a sliver of her once-formidable magical power. Unfortunately, her difficulties in the human world are far from over! Will getting interrogated by the police or surviving on pennies until payday break her at last? Nay! For the Great Jahy will not be defeated!
The Not-So-Great Jahy is actually constantly being defeated, whether by hubris, lies, or more successful underlings. Still, she’s up against assassins who are even worse off than she is, not to mention the concept of public decency.
Another volume of Jahy being her own worst enemy, really, with basically the same jokes that weren’t exactly hilarious the first time. It doesn’t help to be coming out a week after the latest volume of The Demon Girl Next Door, which is basically this, but funny.
The first chapter is the best one, with Jahy once again in possession of a massive mana crystal that lets her maintain her more adult form and has her crackling with evil power, up until she tricks herself into showing off and uses all the energy to clean up the bar she works at. Demonic magic cleaning the sink is my kind of comedy.
We get a new character in two chapters, a lower demon out to assassinate Jahy, who is even more pathetic than her. Her introduction is very dull, but the subsequent follow-up where she sets out to ruin Jahy’s life, but improves it instead, is fun enough. This series doesn’t do great characters, honestly, which is part of its problem.
Everything else is mostly the warmed-up leftovers of last time. I absolutely hate the character of Druj, Jahy’s subordinate who is doing infinitely better than her mistress. Her schtick didn’t do much for me in the first volume and seeing her back for the same set of jokes is annoying, at best.
The two sisters housing our demonic lead are okay, but just the same old same. If the characters aren’t growing much at all, the whole series feels very inert, case in point. As we’ll see, this changes a bit by the end, but it’s been a long, dry walk getting there.
The bizarre police encounter, where Jahy gets busted for her bizarre costume, but it turns out they’ve mistaken her for somebody else, isn’t terrible (although possibly a touch phobic at the end). This is one time where Jahy’s indignation is pretty great, as she rails against the cops bringing a bike to a foot chase.
A pathetic character can be fun, but a pathetic, whiny character who can’t catch a break and isn’t that funny doesn’t make for much of a comedy. You can almost always just assume that the worst outcome will happen and then you’re stuck waiting around for it.
Still, while the chapter about colds is as predictable as all heck, it does inject a little warmth to things, at least, and that might be the turning point this series needs. The idea that Jahy is changing because of contact with humans is hardly unexpected or revelatory, but making her a bit more than she is now can’t go wrong. And the last panel reveal in particular promises a nice shake-up coming.
2.5 stars - rounded up to 3 because I like house chores solved by demonic power, I guess. This one may get the very rare third volume chance, since I’m not on board with it yet, but there’s a narrative shift looming that might make this into something better than it is now.
3.25 Stars. A very fun and quick read again. At this point the story is rather episodic and face paced however this is not a bad thing. Druj stood out as the character with the most development in this volume. I'm looking forward to book 3.
I also really enjoyed the second manga in this serie. It was again very easy and fast to read. Still don't fully have the hang of the reading order, but i'm getting there. She is still a badass with funny childish tantrums. Love how she got turned into a kid when she got in the human world, makes it soo funny. Like how she is trying to still be this badass leader to her minion. It's not really working, but yet with her it is, like how?! I also feel a little for her in this one. She is having a hard time being trapped as a kid and working. Really like this serie and can't wait to read the next one.

Jahy's quest to restore the dark realm continues and this time The Incompetent, The Unlicky Saurva is on her trail! Druj continues to make Jahy feel like a total failure though it's because of her direct actions that Druj is the way she is lol. Jahy learns about budgeting and also has some "help" paying her rent this month ;).
My expectations weren't high since I didn't like the first book, but I was hoping at least the story will develop. I was let down. The same joke is repeated over and over.
