Rath K’zar is an alien bounty hunter. The best in the universe. I’m his admin assistant. I send him his bounties, and I process his payments. I know him better than anybody. He doesn’t know I exist.
I have dreamed about him every night for months. You could call it a crush, or a fixation, or maybe an obsession. Whatever. I never thought it would amount to anything. Then there was a… misunderstanding at work. I became the galaxy’s most wanted overnight. Now he’s hunting me.
Nobody escapes Rath K’zar. He’s merciless. He doesn’t care about innocence. He cares about the bounty. And my name is on his list.
Amazon Top 100, USA Today bestselling, and #1 bestselling author in multiple Amazon categories, Loki Renard writes sizzling hot, occasionally dark and twisted stories of dominance, submission and discipline.
Although this is yet another entry in the author's opposites-attract, planetary romance stories, it is a standalone. Here we get Lyric, an admin in a bounty hunting company who soon finds herself the target of the most feared "alien" bounty hunter she knows; too bad she's also wildly attracted to him. While it's labeled "dark" due to subject matter, I was okay with it since Rath never actually harms Lyric and the sex is consensual.
As with most of this author's books, I found the underlying idea compelling, but the execution lacking (for the umpteenth time, I have to wonder if Ms. Renard uses an editor). She is one of the very few authors in sci-fi erotica who underpins the smexy times with allusions to our contemporary social problems (in this case, the never-ending wars between those of different ethnicities, nationalities, cultures, religions, and, er, species). Unfortunately, though, this book quickly lost its way.
Let me begin with what I liked: The plot, theme (or what I think is the theme), characters (who exhibit growth), conflicts (high-stakes and seemingly insurmountable), and allusions (Ms. Renard was clearly inspired by 1984, Philip K. Dick, and https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114558/).
Here's what I didn't: The plot holes, inconsistencies, and incoherence. (It's impossible to give examples without spoilers so I'll be using that function.) In terms of inconsistencies: the human tunnels either do or do not blow up if a korabi tries to access them. Lyric either does or does not know what tears are. It takes either a day or week to return to the city from the country.
In terms of plot holes, Rath's master plan made little sense since . And his insistence that she should simultaneously trust him and was ludicrous.
But my real problem was the ideological incoherence which, in this case, takes the form of false equivalence. When one side of a conflict has all the power and the other none, then blaming both equally for resulting violence is an example of unreasonable comparison. So, no, enslaved people who killed their "masters" were not just as guilty; Native Americans who killed the settlers forcing them onto reservations were not just as guilty; humans who kill...well, you get the idea.
Finally, the world-building could be clearer (what, exactly, is a "korabi"?) and the twist really isn't that surprising if you've read this author's other books. Fans of and the urban/green sci-fi trope will probably enjoy this, though.
3 stars. Although I had reservations about this, I will be reading the next one since the MFC is atypical for this genre. Personally, I think the MMC is irredeemable, but we'll see.
What the actual Fuck? This book started off soooo good! But then the two MCs (one 400lbs and the other a virgin) banged in a river while rolling and floating down the water. Huh? Theeeeeennnnn this 400lb alien decided after that (I mean right after that) he would try anal out on our heroine. Yes…yes…I would have chalked all of that up to bad alien smut, but because this book started off so well, it’s just disappointing to see the author take this route.

Still trying to figure out how I feel about this book
Lyric is a human. Considered one of the elites. all that means is that she submits completely to their Korabi overlords and she’s rewarded with access to an apartment, grocery stores, a gym, etc. she works for a company that manages bounty hunters. She is the administrative aid to one of the most vicious, but hot, Koribi bounty hunters. She has all kinds of lustful thoughts about him. Thoughts she really shouldn’t be having. For the most part, humans and Koribi don’t mix. It would be considered an abomination for him. They think humans are pretty much scum. Her life is upended one day, when she sees that a bounty has been put out on herself. She doesn’t have much time to get back to her apartment, grab some supplies and high tail it outta there before her crush, Rath, starts tracking her.
To be honest, this storyline pulled me in from the beginning. But I was getting frustrated the more I read because it could have been executed much better. There were so many interesting things in the world building, I just wish it were a bit more complete. There’s really no explanation about how, or why. Humans and Koribi came to live on this planet. Sure there was a brief passage about them being put there some time ago. But that’s it. That’s. It. Really?
Character building was also done halfway. There’s so many questions I have about who these characters are and what motivates them . . . Apart from the specific actions which are what this book is about. Technology is a huge thing in this society. So much so that Lyric doesn’t recognize herself when she sees her reflection in a river without her “augmentations” on. These augmentations are either glasses/contacts that change your perception of what you see, or are actual organic “upgrades” to a person to either enhance their abilities or fix a problem (such as a spinal cord injury). I thought that was a convincing and interesting plot device. I mean, when she sees the world she’s been living in without the enhanced reality provided by these augmentations, she’s quite stunned to see how bad things really are.
The only way I can get through this review is to hide it under the cover of a spoiler alert. So here goes . . .
The one thing that kept me going was the plot was very interesting. And there was betrayal and heartbreak all the way around here. At one point the heroine asks if there’s anyway for them to get past it all, how could a romantic relationship survive everything they’ve been through. It almost would have been worth it for the author to be brave and have the story end where the two main characters are not together, each lost in self-recrimination and unresolved feelings of betrayal, anger and loss. But then, that would definitely be a sucky way for a romance book to end, yeah? In any event, a lot of my rating is dependent upon how I feel when the story is done. And here I just feel a little icky. I didn’t hate the book, although I was frustrated through a lot of it, but I didn’t absolutely love it either. I do plan on reading the next book, however. As for a recommendation on this book? I’d give it a lukewarm recommendation.
I was conflicted with this. I was SO freaking hooked at first. I thought the concept was amazing. Dystopian, everyone is augmented, society is broken into really intense factions, and ultimately, Lyric barely even knows who she is. This is something that sings to this day-and-age of our existence where most of our social interactions are done online and we have the persona we know and THINK is us on the internet and in person, we barely function sometimes. Lyric doesn't even know what she REALLY looks like anymore since augs make all elites look the same. Rath mentions she hasn't had an original thought in her life and she argues only for him to argue back saying she only has thoughts influenced by her augs. This is like...social media on a massive scale haha!! Which I was digging so much. Make that extreme on a life-or-death scale and I think that's why this book caught my interest. And Lyric didn't even know how controlled she was, which I thought was so reminiscent of today's social media and technology, etc. So I was super interested to see how things progressed. Then the sex happened and I was just super confused...about all of it. I was confused on HOW they were doing it. I was confused on why. There really wasn't any buildup. I think he literally said "I want to mate" and they had a weird alligator death roll sex scene in a river... So i was conflicted I guess in that I LOVED how the concept was rolling out. I was so excited and even able to get past the fact that the alien was 8.5 feet tall (which is just crazy). Lyric had an interesting personality. Kind of sarcastic and able to make fun of herself and awkward and her inner monologue was great. She was very matter of fact. The Story itself and the world building was BEAUTIFUL and creepy and exactly something I love getting into. i was just put off by the actual relationship and the hollowness between the characters I guess? And it seemed to distract from a story that had LOADS of potential. I mean, sexy bounty hunter hunting you? That's literally the greatest porno idea ever and I'm pretty sure Lyric says she had fantasies about Rath breaking down her door. That was great. I loved it. There was just a lot more to be desired between the two for me. But there are tons of other reviews saying it was amazing, so obviously this is just one opinion in a sea of opinions.
This is a great example of the writer telling me the story and not showing me the story .It was bland not exciting and I felt like I was reading a book report 🤷. That's a no for me caused I was bored to death.
Plot-hole, the book. Everything that happens in this book seems to get contradicted on the next page. None of it made any sense. But the initial idea was sound and interesting, and I wish that was the book I had read.
For a short story, I really enjoyed this book. I read some comments on the DNF/DNR, and I disagree. One, she was not a virgin. Two, there is way more to the story. A second halve that develops and shows all. Third, the heroine is strong, survivor, and brave.
So the blur is only the fog on the window. The world they live in is not earth. It's a world discovered by two different races, and guess who later took over? In this world, humans are divided into scum and elite, and something in-between that is still not great. One thing that has not changed is that being female is still hard, and if you are not in service to the overloads, then you usually end up selling yourself to get by. Most scum places see women as objects, so it's not a world with many choices. In all of this, there is an AI who decides justice, which is then picked up by bounty hunter to bring in whole or in pieces. No matter what, what the sentence is, death.
This is the world we discover our MFC, and she's an elite, but her mind sometimes sparks with thoughts she knows could get ya killed. It's her journey to discover that we follow. We follow her grey restricted world, where being a second late can be death. We follow when that world is in danger as she becomes wanted We follow as the bounty hunter she has a crush on chases her down. As she runs to survive so she can prove her innocence. As that bounty hunter responds to her and her body responds to him. And just based on instincts, they have some steamy smutty moments! Although I think the smut could have been hotter with better writing. How I became jealous of a girl getting alien 🍆... well, that's something for my free app therapist to run algorithms on and work out 🤷🏿♀️
Anyway, we follow her to the truth, and it's a little emotional for one reveal. Again, the writing could be better, but it is a short book.
The world building was good. The characters were ok as well. Together with the plot, the book is more than good but not excellent. The ending indicated a new story, and I wanna know. Because I kind of like these guys
Wow! Obviously I’m a huge fan of Loki’s but this took me by surprise in every way. Yes, I read the blurb, but I don’t think anything could have prepared me. This book is a refreshing take on a dystopian future. It’s not as simple as a hostile alien force invades earth. Humans are invaders, too, they’re just not the apex predators. There are much more fearsome races in the galaxy and humans find themselves hunted as rogues or forced to toil in service of a superior species. This tale is interesting and engaging from beginning to end. We get to witness two timelines unfolding simultaneously and it’s like unwrapping two gifts at the same time. I think we can get a bit spoiled with strong, alpha males who are brave, fearless, and invulnerable saving female heroines who are strong and capable but a bit broken. But what if both characters are a bit broken? This story flips the script and challenges everything expected and predictable. Themes include colonization, classism, subjugation, and oppression. Fascinating, descriptive, vivid, unique, unpredictable, and utterly unparalleled. I’m thrilled we get to spend more time in this universe as I was very sad to see this story end. I really couldn’t devour it fast enough and I’ve already pre-ordered the next book in this series.
This was an amazing story! I was pulled in from the very beginning and every twist and turn made me more invested in the outcome. I was a little concerned around the halfway point that the story wouldn’t end in the HEA I wanted, but I should have had faith. The intensity increased until the story reached an unexpected conclusion that was exactly what I was looking for. And it looks like the next book is going to be a HEA for another character that pulls at the heartstrings. And I can’t wait!
Loki Renard brings us another brilliant thought provoking trip to a dystopian fantasy world with The Human Hunter. I would say that this is a stand-alone in her alien book series. I love the underlying examination of our society and all the anthropological observations. There is plenty of chemistry between the two main characters who can be found appealing despite (or perhaps because of) their flaws. As always there will be some twists and turns to keep you in suspense about the outcome of the book. The ending was every so slightly abrupt I felt, but none the less I found this to be a very enjoyable read and I would recommend it!

Very intriguing story! Rath is a human hunter and Lyric is his administrator. When her name comes up as a bounty she knows something is wrong but having a korabi like Rath hunting you, you have no other option but to try and run because once he gets you, you will no longer exist. Rath catches up to Lyric and takes her captive. Things are definitely not what they seem in their story. Memories are missing and truth is just out of reach.
Great book! I don’t think I have ever red anything like it. The scene is set in a dystopian alien future where humans are either stripped of their personality and used as servants for the Korabi ( resident aliens ) and referred to as the elite or they are illegal runaways referred to as scum. It was a bit trippy as the elite have implants that make them all look the same - at least through their eyes they are all the same people just different names, and all their memories are erased. Lyric, one of the elites is assistant to Rath a famous Korabi hunter. She is also tragically in love with her but he does not see her. One day she réalises a bounty has been put on her head but little does she know it’s the key to her freedom for she and Rath share a tragic past that she has yet to remember.
I picked this up on a whim because the premise sounded intriguing. And while parts of it were interesting, but I won’t be reading the next book in the series.
Lyric, especially in the latter half of the book, is a great character. She’s feisty and spirited. I wish the author had developed Lyric and and Rath, and their relationship, more because they had a lot of potential.
Overall, this story and the actual composition of the novel felt more superficial. I felt like I was skimming the surface of the story, characters, and setting/ world rather than experiencing those elements in a richer way. The story meanders at time and was more a a series of somewhat connected events rather than a smooth story arc. Certain events are fleshed out while others don’t give the reader enough substance to connect to them other events or characters or memories.
On a lighter note, it’s funny that there’s some reviewers complaining of too much spice, because it was more tame to me — or maybe those readers and I have different expectations around alien romance novels - ha.
I really, really, really wanted to like this story. It had a great blurb and sucked me in at first. But the story just kept getting more and more confusing. Secrets and betrayals all the way around. Which usually make for a good interesting story. This one not so much. The betrayals in this story are huge.. and ones I am not sure you can come back from. I don't think you can just say okay we hurt each other... I'm sorry and then walk off into the sunset together. Not for the reasons these betrayals happened at any rate. There are just some common core values that a person has that you don't cross. You either have these values or you don't. You don't cross those values for the sake of the story. In this story the one that Rath crossed... it undermines his integrity. Everything he stands for. So how could he have done what he did? It makes no sense to me.
This story went from being interesting and enjoyable... to confusing and frustrating which is why I gave it such a low rating. It went from likable to just okay.
DNF at 32%. And I really hate to do it—especially when the book was free, the audiobook's free on Hoopla, and it has good narrators.
IMO this was a bait and switch. I was hoping for a sexy, futuristic/dystopian version of The Fugitive. And it sort of was, at first. We even got some intriguing worldbuilding.
But next thing I know, they're trekking through a jungle together, he throws her in a river, and suddenly they're having sex there. (He's like three feet taller, 300lbs heavier, and she's supposedly a virgin... and he slides in easy with zero foreplay. The math didn't math.)
The scene left me cold, but he made a comment that tingled my spidey sense. I started skimming, and turns out this story is ACTUALLY a (⚠spoiler)
➕ I hate surprises ➕ Especially when they're 2 of my least favorite tropes ➕ And apparently they also both
Lyric has been Rath K’Zar administrator for a year. She catalogs and gives him his bounty. But being an elite isn’t always easy and today it sure sucks. She is flagged to be the next bounty. She knows what will happen if Rath catches her. A korabi like Rath have no feelings. He is a killing machine. But he is more than that. He is on the hunt for Lyric but at the same time he learns about her as well. All those fantasies that Lyric had about him may just be coming true but first need to find out really is going on. Once they are away from Megaris, there is a whole new world but why? What is it that Rath knows that he isn’t telling Lyric and who is she really? This is a really weird world. When things start to come unraveled, THAT’S when we learn what really happened. You will hurt for them both. Sacrifices were made and a debt paid. Lyric is a strong woman and when she truly learns of herself, you see the strength. With their HEA during difficult times we now await His Broken Human.
Absolutely INCREDIBLE. I picked this up as a fun sexy little sci-fi romance and Oh. My. God. Sexy? Check. Kick ass heroine? Check Amazing sci-fi world building? Check Hot as Hades, take no prisoners male eye candy? Double check. And then there’s the FEELS. I am not exaggerating when I say this book broke my heart. Like… literally made my chest hurt. Very few stories leave me guessing quite like this. If I wasn’t guaranteed a happy ending, I think I might have actually cried. The characters had instant chemistry and, okay maybe it was a little contrived, but that’s acceptable in the genre. But then you bring in the BACKSTORY and DAMN. Like. World building like that doesn’t come along every damn day. Plus the author is hiding a little literary heart in her words. ‘Poetic’ comes to mind. I had plenty to highlight. Hats off and five well earned stars. God. Damn.
When I started reading this story, I thought I knew what was happening but suddenly things were not as I had thought them to be. I loved this story and was constantly amazed at what I guessed was to happen next was nothing like what actually happened. Rath and Lyric’s relationship was much more complicated than I ever dreamed possible. This is a story that grabbed my attention in the very beginning and held it until the end, which I was sorry to see come to an end. The story continues into the next book but Rath and Lyric will probably play a minor role in it. I would highly recommend this book as a great read that does not disappoint. I received a free copy of this book via the author and are voluntarily leaving a review.
Lyric is a human who lives in a totally technological society. As an Elite member of this society, she looks the way she is programed to appear; and she sees and hears what her technological tools allow her to absorb. Rath is an alien korabi bounty hunter. Lyric is Rath’s Bounty Administrator. She has been fixated on Rath for quite some time. But when she is erroneously labeled a traitor and placed on Rath’s bounty list, she flees.
Will Rath easily capture her? What will happen when he does? What secrets does he remember that she does not? How will he help her learn?
I highly recommend this intense and complicated adventure, shared between two totally different classes of individuals, looking for a way to overcome deep and depraved obstacles.
Interesting dark alien "romance." First act sucked me in. We follow the FMC getting accused of a crime and fleeing for her life. The 2nd act almost caused me to DNF this book. It has some Matrix vibes, which was really cool. But...it has some really rape-y and confusing sex which led me to question 1. physically how are they doing that? 2. why are they doing that right now? It made the MMC almost irredeemable and the FMC very weak and complacent. For someone who was wanting to flee for her life in Act 1, she sure gave up pretty quick in Act 2. I am glad that I stuck around for Act 3. It answered almost all the questions and got pretty exciting. The relationship between FMC and MMC was still very confusing to me. I did not feel any chemistry. There seemed to be no connection between them. Maybe it is because he is alien and she was brainwashed? The audiobook was OK.
Blurb: He’s hot. He’s deadly. And he’s hunting me.
Rath and Lyric are like a really messed up Romeo and Juliet, I'm sure that my analogy is making you wonder what the heck I'm smoking, but the stories really do line up! They are from opposite families, okay, species. Both families/ species hate each other and clash all the time. They meet secretly. Love blooms. Betrayal happens. There's an uneven battle, A "cousin" dies. Revenge is plotted. Double suicide-ish stuff happens. Then the story twists on itself and it's kind of like 50 First Dates, sort of, because of the memory thing.....I love it when Shakespeare meets sci-fi, lol, can't wait to see the next book, hoping to see the yogi-type prison guard find love with a human, maybe Jazz?
This was such a great read - it has such an amazing twist! The way it is written keeps the reader engaged and excited, the world is described so well. It's a mix of a dystopian life, love, sex, betrayal and hope. I have read Loki's work before but this was a bit of a twist from the other stories I have read. Lyric was in charge of bounty hunter Rath, who always gets his man/woman. Suddenly she becomes the hunted as her name pops up on his list. Things are not what they seem and the chase is on once he see's she is his next target. Loved it, cannot wait for the next one!

I really ask authors for so little, so I'm quite generous when they deliver. The back story was good. Maybe it's reminiscent of some fantasy sci-fi plot, but i don't watch or read too many of them to be disappointed by similarity. This novel had a reasonable number of sex scenes; not the excessive one every 4th page. But i really enjoyed the characters and their unraveling histories. It warranted five stars not because of perfection, but rather the lack of standard imperfections I'm so familiar with seeing in this genre. A good two hour read.
Lyric is having a bad day, not only was she running late for work as a bounty administrator but she also finds herself on the wanted list and the best bounty Hunter Rath K’zar on her tail…and when the intimidating kolrabi catches his bounty their lives are always forfeit.. But there is a history between these two characters and the storyline gets really intriguing and takes many surprising twists as I kept reading, definitely making it a hard to put down read and I know I can’t wait to read the next book..
Loki Renard’s book always bring that little something extra - extra trippy, extra quippy, extra extreme - and this story is no different. In The Human Hunter, she has created America’s nightmare - the individual no longer matters, all are just cogs in the machine, subject to the whims of algorithms. And oh wow, the twists in this story, the absolutely toxic chemistry between Rath and Lyric, the ENDING ( where you just can’t see a way forward to happily ever after)… just a phenomenal, in-put-down-able book.
From the mind of Loki Renard comes this wild alien ride full of twists, turns, deception, and steamy, steamy fun. Lyric has been Rath K’Zar administer for some time, has always found him hot, but felt he didn't see her. When her name comes up as a target, she runs and fast, but not fast enough. Things are not as they seem and this is when the book gets interesting. As always, Loki's books are full of action, steam, twists, steam, turns, and steam. Another great read and a FREE read with KU. Enjoy!! I received an ARC and this is my 100% honest review.
Loki Renard never disappoints!! I read the blurb but the story I read was so much MORE. There is no way to describe this story without spoiling it. I am overcome! I LOVE this book Rath K'zar is Korabi. He's a bounty hunter. He's vicious. All of his bounties are brought in in pieces! He ALWAYS catches his bounties, he NEVER fails. Lyric is human. She's Rath's administrative assistant but something has gone wrong and she's on the list and now being hunted by Rath. Lies, Sex, Love and Betrayal This has it All
If it wasn’t such a short read I probably would have DNFed it. There was so much going on and honestly didn’t understand the romance. It was literally based on looks. Like her saving him once means enteral love? He couldn’t remember her name then it’s a epic quest to save her by the shit he caused? I liked the beginning and if the book was about him falling in love with his bounty helper/assistant who was utterly in love with him dispute being a lower class would have been cute, but not this reaching scifi hodgepodge of stuff. Maybe I am just missing it?
