Is it an adoption story? Is it a science book about what kinds of critters hatch from eggs? It is a funny adventure? Let your child decide.

I especially love the book design, with the variety of page layouts and some font changes... I scurried along as I read, just as a hen on a mission would.

When Hattie Peck's egg doesn't hatch, she sets out to find other eggs and ends up with a wonderful brood. Would be a great pick for spring st or talk about what kinds of animals hatch from eggs.

Great story on the joys of adoption. Hattie Peck wanted nothing more than to be a mother, but she had only laid one egg in her entire life and it had not hatched. Thinking of eggs made her sad. So one day she decides to search the world high and low to find abandoned eggs. She returns home with her huge clutch of eggs and patiently sits on them until they hatch. Now Hattie Peck has a huge family of alligators, penguins, lizards, aardvarks, snakes, turtles, toucans, owls, and more. And she couldn't be happier. "Hattie Peck made the perfect little mom!"

This was a cute one about Hattie Peck collecting eggs of every type from all around the world. Anyone dealing with infertility this might push a bit of a button for you, but not in a sad way, and it has a sweet ending. Nice story for unconventional families and exploration. Simple construction of "she went over here and found this, she went over there, and found that" but effective and a good length.

Loved it!

this book was read by us (10yo,8yo,7yo and mommy) for fun because we too have a chicken who loves all eggs and just wants to be a mommy. She is a cute and sweet chicken with one wing (due to a successful battle with a Fox!). We recommend this story to anyone who loves chickens and a happy ending!

Hattie Peck is a brilliantly illustrated picture book where Hattie the hen travels the world in search of all the abandoned eggs. She searches high and low, across oceans and into caves. She finds them all, but then she must sit on them. Soon enough they begin to hatch. This is a great story for adoptive families or those who are struggling with fertility issues.

Hattie Peck is a chicken who has only ever wanted an egg of her own. When things don’t work out for her, she decides that she will gather up all of the lost or forgotten eggs and raise them as her own. This would make a wonderful book for any child, but I can see it being especially sweet for adoptive parents and their children.

All Hattie Peck loved was eggs! She laid one egg, yet as it never hatched she set off on a journey to find all of the abandoned eggs in the hope of rescuing and hatching them all. Through overcoming her fear of heights, trudging through gloomy caves and battling fires, Hattie was able to become the perfect mum to lots of different creatures...a larger variety than you would expect!

Poor Hattie Peck simply loves eggs, but she has only ever laid one egg--and it never hatched. Eggs are all she thinks about, all she dreams about. No egg is too big; no egg is too small. So if she can't lay another egg, she's going to have to go out into the world to find one.

Hattie embarks on a journey in search of all the abandoned eggs. She dives to the deepest depths of vast oceans. She soars over gigantic cities and climbs up mountains towering above the clouds. Through gloomy dark caves, deep below the ground, Hattie searches. And she doesn't find just one egg. There are so many abandoned eggs, just waiting for her to find them!

With her newly gathered eggs in tow, Hattie Peck returns home. Sitting on so many eggs at once is quite the task, but Hattie doesn't mind. Days and weeks pass, until one day, finally, there's a Crack! Scratch! Tap! But what will happen when all those eggs hatch together?

Energetic and colorful illustrations fill this story with humor and fun. Kids will take away positive messages about making your dreams come true in unexpected ways. This can also work as an adoption story about unconditional love. With a cute surprise ending, this is sure to make kids laugh and smile.

Emma Levey has written this lovely story for her mother and father and quite befittingly as it’s about a hen who cannot hatch eggs of her own, but optimistically goes in search of all eggs- elsewhere! A beautifully illustrated storybook, Levey’s hand-painted teal hen really is a busy-bee, ‘clucking and puffing’ across stormy seas, ‘diving’ to coral reefs, ‘trekking’ through villages, ‘soaring’ over gigantic cities, ‘trudging’ deep underground and much more in search of her beloved eggs. This is certainly a book to teach some powerful verbs.

Moreover, since infertility is now considered “a disease of the reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected intercourse” by the World Health Organisation, it is certainly an idea that young children will increasingly grow aware of. With married friends of my own who have struggled with what they call “a life-ruining” and “depressing monster”, this story particularly stands out to me. But, what is really great, is Hattie’s ability to change her life and her refusal to passively accept what Nature has thrown at her – and she does it with aplomb!

Also, Hattie, who is described as having a ‘plump little body’ is certainly active. Children might like to try out some of her ‘moves’ in PE and practise spellings. For higher ability pupils, gerunds might be a good grammar point to introduce – ‘verbal’ nouns like ‘swimming’ and ‘running’ are common examples. In terms of theme, it may feed into learning about family members and some children will certainly be from reconstituted families or even be adopted themselves. Whatever the discussion, I cannot get over how colourful the illustrations are – quite similar to ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. This beautiful picture book could be read to a class and would most certainly appeal to pupils in the EYFS and KS1.

Hattie Peck, an adorable plucky chicken is on a mission. She is on a mission of love. You see she has only laid one egg in her life and that egg did not come to fruition. Poor Hattie all she ever wants and thinks about are eggs, eggs, eggs and the poor dear came up empty. Not to be discouraged Hattie decides to go on an adventure that will change her life forever.

She is determined to seek out every throwaway egg, scoop it up and bring it back home where she can mother and nurture it and welcome it with loving wings into her family. She literally goes to the ends of the earth finding precious abandoned eggs that are just waiting for a loving home. She excitedly adopts every size, shape and colour of egg to make a perfect blended family.

When she arrives back at her coop her egg pile is humongous, her resolve even greater. Hattie fondly nests on her eggs day and after day, week after week exercising great patience. Does this depress her? Au contraire, she finally hears, "CRACK! SCRATCH! TAP! and her prayers are answered. Voilà her long awaited family has hatched!

Hattie turns out to be the perfect little mom and she and her eclectic hatchlings live happily ever after... Unconditonal love reigns!

Levey, Emma Hattie Peck. PICTURE BOOK. Top That Publishing, 2016 $16.99.

Hattie Peck is the epitome of a mother hen. She loves eggs, but alas has only ever laid one of her own and it never hatched. Unhappy with her lot in life, Hattie sets off on a world-wide adventure to rescue and care for all the forgotten eggs in the world. No matter the shape, size or color, Hattie will save and hatch them all.

This heartwarming story of a mother hen who just wants her own egg to hatch a darling adventure tale. Hattie's escapades traveling across mountains and oceans will really engage readers. This tale is great for teaching story predictions as the readers can try and guess which animals will hatch at the end.

I was hunting for a story which included eggs for an art project with junior kids. I wanted a story to inspire some art with eggs. This is a delightful story about Hattie who doesn't have any eggs of her own so she goes off into the world to find abandoned eggs and give them a home. She travels all over and finds all sorts of eggs. A great story. It includes a bunch of Australian unusual animals that hatch from eggs which would give this books a great lead in to talk about science topics about eggs.
