Unlike a lot of people, I never had to read Beowulf in grade school. It never particularly interested me either, so I likely never would've picked it up were it not for a Seminar in British Literature class I'm taking for my degree.

I'M SO GLAD I DID!!

Honestly, I loved this. It was a pretty short, easy read and felt very theatrical, much more so than other epic poems I've read. I really enjoyed the characters and the tie-ins with both Nordic and Christian mythologies, and it was surprisingly action-packed.

Basically, if you want to get into classics and haven't read this, or have negative memories because you had to read it in high school (which automatically diminishes the enjoyment of all literature) give it a try!

This is a great story. It gives lots of insight into fame, honor, and value. There are lots of names which can get confusing, but this edition has a glossary of names and genealogies in the back that was quite helpful in keeping track of everything.
Also, you Tolkien fans would appreciate finding inspiration for The Hobbit in this book.😁😁

Admittedly fantasy seems to be my favorite genre (don't tell sci-fi) but I really love that this poem is taught in schools. Especially with the popularity of The Witcher, the dialogue in this poem is pretty accessible and easy to imagine Kings and swordsman speaking (or Henry Cavill). I also love how neatly the stories wrap up and feel complete. It's definitely refreshing to read something that wasn't written to make you feel anything but ultimately triumphant!
