A Cotswolds village—a Fall Fête—TWO four-legged sleuths—and a murder!
Leta Parker is back with her talkative companions—Dickens the dog and Christie the cat.
Though Leta’s still haunted by her tragic loss, moving from Atlanta to the village of Astonbury has given her a new lease on life.
Leta’s days are filled with yoga, book club, walks with Dickens, naps with Christie, and outings with friends. Add preparations for the Astonbury Fall Fête—complete with scarecrows, pumpkins, and costumes—and she’s beyond busy.
All is well until a dead body is discovered on the riverbank, and once again, Leta and her sleuthing girlfriends are drawn into a search for a killer—a search that takes them to Dartmouth on the coast of England.
Will touring Agatha Christie’s summer home help them access their inner Miss Marples?
Will Dickens sniff out clues closer to home? Or will Christie the cat outthink them all?
Discover the answers—and a recipe—in Pumpkins, Paws, & Murder, book two in Kathy Manos Penn’s Cozy Animal Mystery Series.
Kathy Manos Penn lives in Sandy Springs, Georgia with her husband and her four-legged office assistants. When she dreamed of retiring from corporate America, she envisioned indulging in her favorite pastimes—reading, traveling, and writing columns for her local paper. Taking her bucket list trip to England was a top priority.
A second career as an author was never part of the plan—until someone uttered the fateful words, “You should write a cozy mystery.”
Ten books later, readers can’t get enough of the Dickens & Christie mystery series. Kathy adheres to the adage to write what you know and populates her mysteries with well-read, witty senior women, a loyal dog, and a sassy cat.
Her two four-legged office assistants inspire the personalities of Dickens & Christie. Why is Dickens a fiend for belly rubs? Because Kathy’s real-life dog is. The same goes for Christie’s finicky eating habits and penchant for lolling on top of the desk or in the file drawer. She gets it from the calico cat who rules the roost.
How does Kathy describe her life? “I’m living a dream I never knew I had.”
Book I in the series, Bells, Tails & Murder, won a 2020 Readers’ Favorite Gold Award, and Pets, Pens & Murder, Book VII, garnered a 2023 Georgia Author of the Year nomination.
Another fun adventure with Leta, Dickens, Christie, Wendy and Belle as they travel from the Cotswolds to Dartmouth and Agatha Christie's summer home in search of clues for the latest murder in Astonbury. Leta's ability to talk to her animals makes for some humorous conversations as they help uncover the clues.
Max the Magician was a real piece of work, so it definitely didn't surprise me when he ended up dead leaving a string of plenty of suspect possibilities aka women he'd wronged. But Leta's main concern was her friend Beatrix's niece who was looking good as the top suspect.
I loved the road trip Leta took with Belle and Wendy! Belle's just an awesome character, and despite her apparent frail looks, she was surprisingly able to stand a lot more sleuthing than Wendy or Leta thought she could. As she'd say, "I can sleep when we're home." lol. She did end up finding out a good clue, and even Gemma came to somewhat respect their little amateur sleuthing efforts or the "little old ladies" as she liked to tease them.
The showdown was really exciting, and once again having Dickens and Christie close by saved the day. Dickens was still being called a little hero from the first adventure but was happy to share the limelight with his kitty sister and their bookstore cat friends, Tommy and Tuppence. I'll be borrowing the next book as soon as I free up a slot in my Kindle Unlimited!
you don’t have to read the others in the series but you will want to
This book picks up where book one leaves iff. But the author writes where if you didn’t read book one you won’t be lost. But after reading this book you will want to read book one to get to know the characters and town etc better. Book one in my opinion was better than this book but both are good. If you like a good mystery to figure out before the author lets you know these are the ones to read.
I became a fan of the Dickens & Christie Mystery series by Kathy Manos Penn when I read the first book in the series, Bells, Tails, & Murder. I mean how can readers not fall in love with a book where the main character can talk to and understand their cat and dog ???
Main character Leta moved from the United States across the pond to a little village, Astonbury in the Cotswolds in England after her husband Henry passed away. Within a short time she has made a great circle of friends and seems to be adapting quite well.....that is until she gets involved with murder cases.
In Pumpkins, Paws, & Murder, the second book in this series, the village is getting ready for the Astonbury Fall Fete at The Olde Mill Inn. A fete is a celebration or festival. Leta is dressing up as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz and her dog, Dickens, is going to be Toto. There is a lot going on the day of the Fete, as we can all imagine, and it seems like it went off without a hitch.....until the next morning when the body of the magician from the Fete is found behind the Inn on the riverbank. You would think with Detective Sergeant Gemma living in the cottage behind the Inn that it would be an open and shut case but that is not the way it is.
Leta and a few of her friends, mainly Wendy and her 90 year old mother Belle, "helped" Gemma solve a murder before so they decide to "help" again. And when they find out that Trixie, the niece of their friend Beatrix, is on the suspect list, they jump in feet first. They know that Trixie wouldn't harm anyone but they know that they cannot go on just their word and their impressions of people so they decide to do a little investigating. And with the Fete having drawn in people from all over, they have their work cut out for them. And surprisingly Gemma seems to have given in to allowing them to help.
Readers will thoroughly enjoy Pumpkins, Paws & Murder, as well as the first book, in this series. The author makes it so easy to follow along and even provides a list of the cast of characters at the beginning of the story so that you can go back at any time to get to know someone. And the fact that Leta can talk to her two pets as well as a few other area animals is such a delight especially if you own cats or dogs and you "talk" to them. You wll see your animals within them. I highly recommend getting these books and getting lost in this quaint little village and get ready for the next installment..... I know I am looking forward to November when the third book is being released.......
What a great cozy mystery read. It’s got a dog, a cat, older sleuths, and a murder in a small hometown feeling neighborhood. Perfect for snuggling in and reading on a cold autumn day. The book also has a list of characters, a map of the town, and recipe. All the ingredients needed to solve a mystery.
I'm not a cat person, but I can relate to Dkckens. I have had a line of Pomeranians, the current being a chocolate merle named Flash, who even sleeps in my bed. We communicate with looks and actions as we are not blessed with the ability to verbally communicate -- but oh how I would love to be able to! Keep up the good work. I can hardly wait for more!!!
Another fun adventure. They travel from the Cotswolds to Dartmouth and Agatha Christie's summer home in search of clues for the latest murder in Astonbury. Leta's ability to talk to her animals makes for some humorous conversations as they help uncover the clues.
I truly enjoyed the characters interactions and friendship along with the love the main character had with het animals! Being able o talk with het pets added laughter and love to the read
This second book in the Cozy Mystery series is even better than the first and I loved Kathy Manos Penn’s first book. As the story begins a vicious villain is slain, but by whom? Possible suspects abound and you won’t know who the perpetrator is until the end. I can’t wait to see what Leta, Dickens, Christie and the others are up to in book 3.
This is book 2, so grab book 1 also if you haven't read it yet! Each book offers a strong stand alone tale (tail?) with an interesting lead character, Leta, the greek cooking gal from the southern U.S. The Little Old Ladies Detective agency is on the case again, and it's so interesting how loose tongues wag when talking to little old ladies! With the aid of some very helpful pets, the story leads you through the twists and turns at a perfect pace. Set in the beautiful countryside of England, this is so much more than a regular cozy mystery. The author does her homework as she treats us with interesting and well researched tidbits, wonderful animals, and of course, some pesky murder! Each book has a strong conclusion, so (thankfully) there's no irritating "hanging story"- you won't need that kind of gimmick to get to you to WANT to read the next book. Enjoyable, recommendable!
Both books in this series are fast paced, kept my attention and were humorous as well. Dickens and Christie are the best part. I've always appreciated the intelligence of my pets - one dog and two cats at this time. I love that these two not only assist in solving the mysteries, they are articulate and opinionated like we all know our pets would be if we only had the enviable ability to converse with them! I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
Leta Parker is at it again with her favorite canine and feline sleuths, Dickens and Christie. If you’ve ever had a family member with four paws, you’ll enjoy the banter between these three, as Leta is the only one that can actually understand them. I love this series! In this second book of Dickens and Christie, the murder victim wasn’t necessarily a nice person, but did they deserve to die? And who did it? I have to admit, I thought I had the whodunnit figured out early, but I was wrong.
Dear Christie and Dickens, I must admit to admiring your skills and styles as much as I admired your mistress and her talent for sleuthing! Being 95% British DNA , I do have a weakness for anything located in those beautiful isles so you need to encourage her to look for more intrigue and mysteries to solve and soon. Also more recipes as I am quite fond of Greek food .
I have not always been a fan of the animal detective books but I love this series. I think it is because the dialog is so believable. I can see Dickens and Christie in my minds eye as I read the story. I love the setting, the warmth of the cozy village, and the themes of these books are believable, fun, and just a pleasure to read. I will be waiting eagerly for the next book to come out.
I love Leta’s talking animals they are a perfect help with her detective skills. No one knows that she is able to talk to them. The magician in this story is a womanizer and causes trouble with the women in the Cotswolds. A dead body starts the detecting with Leta, Wendy, and Belle.
I love animals and cozy mysteries. I am older myself so I also prefer my characters to be more mature. Well written with correct grammar and punctuation. Rare in these days.
Another fun adventure with Leta and the ladies and gentlemen and all of the fur baby assistants. The town is so rich with wonderful characters. The complex mystery will keep you hooked. Looking forward to more adventures
This is the second book in this series and very entertaining. Leta and her friends, four legged and two legged, once again investigate a murder. And the Little Old Lady Detective Agency is formed.
Enjoyed this series of books very much. Looking forward to more of the same.
I would recommend this book. It has page rurnability. The talking animals provided a sense of humour. Also learned quite a bit about Agatha Christie the queen of mysteries.
Always a good mystery when the victim has so many people with reasons to want him dead. Makes the solution that much more difficult. The murder scene was creepy!
Well, I was not disappointed! This was the perfect book two! The plotting is grest, and the people are fascinating. But, as usual, the animals are the stars!
I have read two so far in this series and they are fun. The mystery was much better in here. Her descriptions of the area was great. Love the animal helpers too.
Leta continues to settle into her retirement home in the Cotwolds after the unfortunate discovery of her maid's body on an outing with her dog about a month earlier. She's become an active member of the Astonberry community, and is busy helping with preparations for the annual Fall Fête. The morning after the celebration, the body of the magician, also the soon-to-be-ex-husband of a friend's niece, Trixie, is found on a local riverbank, with an apple stuffed in his mouth like a Christmas pig. Discovering that another vendor in town for the fair is a long-time on-and-off girlfriend from before his marriage to Trixie complicates things a little bit, but Leta and her friends gamely set out to clear Trixie, despite the complaints of the local police.
Christie, Leta's black cat, and Dickens, her dwarf Great Pyrenees dog, continue to help the "little old ladies" figure out what happened, and the fact that Leta can talk to them is still unknown to her friends and neighbors (she's quite good at responding to them in front of others in a way that makes them think she's just pretending she understands what they're saying). The rest of the townsfolk continue to be developed as characters, and you start to feel like you're getting to know them, too.
The mystery has a few twists, but I don't think it was engaging as the first volume. One of the twists was rather obvious from the second it was introduced, and I found it kind of insulting that the author tries to make us believe that Leta and Wendy wouldn't have immediately figured it out. It just wasn't that hard.
It's Autumn in the Cotswolds and the village of Astonbury, England is having their annual Fall Fete. Preparations have been underway and all seems to be going well when things start. But when a body is found on the riverbank near the inn, things come to a halt for Trixie, the niece of the woman who runs the book shop, who has been trying to divorce the man. Leta, with her talkative dog and cat Dickens and Christie, joins her friends, Wendy and Belle, in the investigation trying to gather clues to clear Trixie. Their leads them to Dartmouth on the coast of England to find out just what kind of man Max was.
I loved the first book in this new series and this book was just as wonderful. I was so entranced by them that I actually bought them even though I could have gotten them through Kindle Unlimited. This book was well-written with well-rounded characters. I was hooked from the beginning and kept ensnared all the way through to the end. I laughed out loud in places and cheered in others while being totally captivated with the characters. I especially love Dickens and Christie and how they talk with Leta. The identity if the killer isn't easily identified so you're kept guessing and are never really sure. I'm really looking forward to the next book and hope it comes out soon. I highly recommend both book and series which I suggest you read in order.
The backpack Leta ordered for Christie arrived, she shows it to Christie and explains that she can accompany Dickens with her on their walks. Christie not sure about the backpack but in to try it out and likes it. She gets her first outings goes to The Olde Mill Inn and meets Paddington. Leta and Dickens go to fête join up with Wendy and Belle. Leta and her group are dressed as Peter Pan characters, with Dickens dressed as Toto, Libby and Gavin's group dressed as the Wizard of Oz. Trixie is new to Astonbury and is trying to divorce her scumbag, cheating, abusive husband who wants her back he's a magician at the fête. Max is found dead with an apple stuck in his mouth. Gemma calls Leta to come to crime scene and asks for her help. Leta, Wendy and Belle join together to help Gemma solve the murder. Good fun story and characters.
PUMPKINS, PAWS AND MURDER by Kathy Manos Penn is the second book in the Dickens and Christie series.
The story line carries the characters from the first book into more fun, travel, surprises and even murder. Penn's characters become the reader's friends as they continue their lives in the Cotswolds of England.
Join in as the little old ladies (or are they simply nosey, gossiping old ladies) have a pint in the pub or take a seat at the inn and have a cup of tea. They will ferret out clues and suspects with the help Dickens, dog detective and Christie, cat detective. Will Leta, Belle and Wendy decide on a name for their detecting? Join them as they solve the murder in this cozy mystery read.
I thank Voracious Readers Only for providing me an advance reader's copy.
The morning after the Fall Fete in the village of Astonbury, a body is discovered by the river. It is Max, a magician who performed at the Fete. He is also the estranged husband of Trixie, who is the niece of the books store owner. Leta, Dickens and Christine, along with her friends Wendy and Belle, begin to search for clues in the murder. Max had a temper and was a womanizer making for a lot of suspects. Trixie was, of course, suspected because she was his estranged wife. The hunt takes the ladies and animals to the town Max was from to search for clues. While they learned a lot, they still didn't know who was the killer. Was it Trixie, Sparkle, the girlfriend, Barb, a jealous husband or boyfriend? Read to discover. Love the series.
