Search or be destroyed. Hunting the Wild Hunt. Death is the welcome to Grestal.
Marcus Bola and his friends barely made it through their last self-imposed mission. He found and rescued his estranged son from the clutches of a Seelie drug cartel bent on taking over Columbus, but success means that they’ve proven their ability to get the job done.
Now tasked with retrieving the Huntsman's Mantle in hopes of giving the Wild Hunt new life, Marcus and his friends leave the High Table for Grestal, the birth place of nightmares. A double-shot of danger is added to this already-volatile cocktail as Marcus learns more about the world and his friends, while enemies start hunting them in return.
Luckily, he’s pretty handy with his magic—and a shaker.
A very strong followup to Galaxy. Everyone’s leveling up as expected, gods eating gods for powerups, and a nice little romp through many different realms.
And, of course, a quest to be the Huntsman of the Wild Hunt… itself a very neat powerup. :)
Overall, this is all quite nicely balanced. A little love, a little romance between monsters, a little heroism for the sake of jinn, a little rage, and a whole lot of blood. Everything that a growing avatar of an elder god needs.
Mistakes: Well written and edited. I didn't find anything wrong with this book.
Plot: very very litrpg light. More of a slow burn heram story. I will probably stop reading this series.
Characters: While I like the characters, I have a dislike of having any kind of romantic relationship with someone or thing that is either bound to you or lives inside you. Smacks to much of slavery and rape. I mean do they really have a choice if they can't leave?
(audiobook, great sound mixing and solid narration)
Overall another fun romp and a lot more enjoyment in learning the ins and outs of this universe with more answers and questions about the place each of our MCs have in it.
Only real nits have to do with some, (for lack of a better choice of trope) men writing women trope. (Regarding triangles and such)
Life or death challenges are becoming a regular part of Marcus’s day
As he continues to try and stay afloat in a newly discovered world of magic and mayhem. Mayhem is definitely a Marcus specialty and he just keeps growing in ways to kick ass! And the team is growing as more odd wayward folks are brought into Marcus’s crew of myths and legends. A Flame Jinn, an Oni, and a reborn goddess discovering their limits as they join Marcus and grab other strong unappreciated people into their little group. Galaxy grows in leaps and bounds and shares what she can with the group as they all grow in levels and customize their stats and builds in real life. As gamers the Jinn, Arden, and the Oni, Cassia, use their knowledge and skills to teach and keep the others alive when they are outclassed. They know when to run even if they don’t want to, but there are multiple levels of plans and schemes in place that will only be revealed in the moment they are sprung. Finally, the ultimate quest that no one has survived in millennia to restore the Great Hunt and the Huntsman to its proper place protecting humans and others from great evil. Not as the plaything of the elven courts. Now, he just has to survive and find the mantle…
“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”
As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis. I hate trying to define my enjoyment and describe facets of it that would appeal to someone else. It is simply not my style. But for the sake of those fishing for clues:
Character development: very good Game elements: minimal Harem elements: none yet, but he keeps flirting with the idea Tone: good blend of seriousness and humor in a modern supernatural setting
I will happily discuss the book with you on Goodreads if you are so inclined. As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here.
Book 1 was fairly decent, but while I had high hopes for book 2 picking up where book 1 left off and (ideally) improving, it...didn't. There's a weird cross-over with what I can only assume is one of the author's other series, but it's not at all explained and makes no sense without context. New characters are being added, but they're not especially interesting or likeable. The plot is getting more and more convoluted, but I struggle to find any reason to care.
I dunno, everything about this book feels like book 1 with the best bits removed, and the worst bits emphasised.
I'm really not sure who this book is for. I normally write something like "if you liked book 1, you'll like this one too, if not skip it", but I liked book 1 well enough and I still didn't like this book, and I'm not really sure why anyone would like it.
Maybe if I'd stuck it out a bit longer it would have improved?
I have read many aspiring series where the first book is like and the characters developed and the relate align well. That is often because the author has had time to think it through completely for their first volume. But when they get to the second book, it suffers and does not maintain the.promise. We get lucky when the author grows along with his series, whether it is their first or their fifteenth series. This is one for those! I now have a new author and a new series to follow and eagerly await and anticipate the next installment!!
The dynamics Chris puts into this book are very familiar to anyone who's read his Axe Druid series. The developing relationship between Marcus, Cass, and Galaxy will vividly remind anyone of his trio of lovers from the other series. More you read, the clearer it becomes that the worlds are all tied together, which raises a lot of interesting questions. As usual for one of Chris's books the action is great, the snark abounds, another are deeper implications to everything that you'll just have to read to pick up.
Good series so far. The Mc is very hard charging and the readers get to enjoy non stop action and fun. This time the group has to explore a different realm from earth. There they learn more about galaxy and themselves as they get stronger. The whole love possible harem triangle is weird but i assume there will be some conclusions drawn soon. Doesn't affect to fun though. Looking forward to the next book.
The main character gets stronger by traveling to different realms and battling for his life to find a legendary item to make him the Huntsman. All the characters learn more about themselves and gain through the events. Decent mix of action and character development with some surprise jumps to remove mundane travel log writing.
One small difficulty: the writing often left me confused with pronouns about who was saying/doing what and when.
Solid character progression, by that I mean emotional growth and change. GameLit was a bit lighter then the first book, the main character checked his stats maybe three times in the whole book, it's better then stats interrupting storyline in my opinion but with noting.
What happens when a marine, a jinn, an oni, and a wizard walk out of bar... you'll have to read the book to find out.
The second book in the series really adds some more character development to all the characters you know from the 1st book with some interesting new powerups and upgrades.
This one picks up where the previous one ended. Liked it but took a little to get caught up since it had been a couple of months since I read the first one. Looking forward to 3rd one!
What a great book too I think it was even better than the 1st book. I certainly look forward to reading the next 7 books in this series while I hope they just never stop.
Really enjoyed the fast pace of this book, characters were different and diverse which I enjoyed, couple of occasions there were repeats of the plot but this didn't detract from the story. Would really like to see a third book to continue on.
New allies, new enemies, and new powers. Marcus and company are still steadily powering up, getting stronger with each new encounter and learning more about themselves and what they mean to one another.
