Hero and the Demon Generals make their way towards the Demon Lord, but nefarious doings are transpiring. A cabal of sages leads to a battle royale, and I assure you this all sounds a lot more fun than it is. Also, and I don’t say this lightly, this series is wasting your time.

Hoo boy. After the occasional chuckle from the first volume, it seemed fine to give this second one a chance. This is, safe to say, not true. It turns out this series didn’t make it past two volumes and ends with a hearty ‘if you want to know more, read the light novels’.

The inherent flaw there is that you need to make the reader want to know more and, frankly, I don’t. There should be something fun in combining two disparate elements together - you shouldn’t, for example, make the core concept worse by adding social media (there is probably a greater lesson for the world at large there).

And this project is woefully ill-suited to adaptation anyway, consisting of lots of texting and what feel like still shots of the goings-on. It looks and feels like a slide show more than an involved story. Manga is a combination of words and pictures, not stapling one on top of the other and calling it a day. Or shouldn’t be.

Needless to say, this caroms through its plot like a greased pig on a luge track, establishing a giant cadre of bad guys that get defeated in the most half-assed fights possible and bringing in a character to betray the Demon Lord just to get it all wrapped up in time. It is absolutely underwhelming.

The odd joke lands, I give it that much, which will keep this out of a one-star rating. The Demon Lord and Hero’s eventual meeting is awkward sweet and has a great reaction from the Generals, but it’s not near enough of a reward since we know the adventure continues. The Hero’s big speech about how great social media is? Hoo boy redux.

And we get too much meta humour, which almost always drives me nuts. I think I have found my rule about this - you cannot break the fourth wall if that is your only hope of a good joke. In this story, well, the six sages are literally named after misspellings of the numbers one through six, so you tell me.

In the end, the biggest failing of this series is that it neither adds to the source material (presumably; lord help us if it’s worse) nor elevates it. If this manga didn’t exist I doubt anybody would care and I probably won’t remember it in a year.

2 stars - the art’s nice.

I am sad that this one is the last given that there is still plenty of stuff that we could get to, I mean he never made it to the castle, though he did meet the DL now. Oh well. *sighs*. But I had fun reading this volume. Seeing DL and hero get closer, see the chat messages between everyone, meet the Six Sages and their bad plans, see a grand mission start and various battles of awesomeness, and then that end. The art was a lot of fun! Hopefully one day we will get more manga.

So... the hero ends up with a harem of monster girls that have absolutely no interest in dating him and he has no interest in dating them because he's in love with their female Demon Lord boss. I mean... their romance is cute and all... but there's no substance to any of the other characters. Due to the social media gimmick, there's a lot of text dialogue to read and most of everything is exposition-dumped via text messenger.

Then there's some last minute antagonist plot that ultimately has the dumbest reason I've ever heard of, especially considering the bogus backstory for the whole thing.

Also they never resolve the "Save the Princess" subplot or the "Cursed Hero" subplot

Overall...not the most entertaining series. I struggled to finish this singular book, which is a pretty good indication that I wasn't enjoying it. Let's just say... I personally didn't care for it and I'm glad I'm done with it.

This series has 2 volumes.

I had a great time with this series. It finishes in a nice enough spot to be considered wrapped up, though there was some regret to learn that the original story continues in the light novel it's adapted from that doesn't get covered here. The art is awesome, the humour is great and the characters are lovely in their own unique way without ever feeling like one could stand in for another.

Such a shame this only lasted two volumes, it was really cute and had some really good development!
