Michael is an M15 security agent who specializes in profiling. He soon meets his match.

Neva is a highly trained assassin. She is cold-blooded. Her mantra is to follow orders, remember that curiosity kills, never fear and fitness is key to survival.

This was an action filled cat and mouse chase. It reminded me vaguely of the Orphan X series, but didn't quite reach the addictive pacing of the Orphan series. I was glued to the pages of most chapters and skimming other parts that were too drawn out for me.

A quick, entertaining read which is the first in a 3 book series. I want to read more and see how the author deals with the good vs evil premise and I'm keen on the two bad ass protagonists.

Neva has gone rogue against her agency and now she needs to be “retired”. But first her handlers want to know what caused one of their most valued assassins to quit.

The above description is only the beginning. Espionage, murder, and run for your life scenarios abound in this book taking the term survivor to the highest level. Outwit and outplay equal outlast in a nest of viper killers. Being expert in weaponry is helpful too.

I’m drawn to espionage and hitman hitwoman themes and this is a great one. The bodies pile up as blood flows, however there’s no gratuitous gore. The writing and plotting were tense and I loved all the scheming. Count me in for a long game - one of my favorite things.

I read this quickly and didn’t want it to end. However, I’m in luck because it’s the first of a three book series with the second due to publish in May and the third in July. I’ll be there for the sequels and happy I won’t have to wait long.

Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for my advance reader’s copy.

CW:

Well that was a brilliant Hanna crossed with Jason Bourne type action thriller!

I loved the main characters and the story was so engaging. This would make an excellent movie or TV mini series. Seriously, I kept finding my husband and telling him how entertaining this was and what was happening at various points. Just an exciting cat and mouse thriller with kick-arse assassins and a shadowy organisation. Fun times!

This book was so frustrating! To start with I loved it, then it dragged, then I loved it again then...

Neva is a cold-blooded assassin, trained to umpteenth degree to obey orders and ask no questions. But when she has to ‘retire’ (kill) an older version of herself and that version fights back and they talk a bit, well, Neva’s conditioning starts to crumble. She starts to remember some of what they did to her. The Network. That shadowy organisation that controls everything Neva does. Until now.

Michael Kensington is an MI5 agent in a top secret group called The Archive. It’s all very cloak and dagger isn’t it? Michael and the Archive have been after a shadowy assassin for some time now. Michael and Neva meet, quite by chance, and there’s a certain something that is triggered. Michael wonders if she is the assassin he has been chasing but doesn’t turn her in. Neva wonders if Michael can help her take down the Network but doesn’t trust him.

The is a lot of cat and mouse chases going on here, both in the UK and in Europe. That part does get a little samey and could have been changed up a bit. Throughout the narrative we slowly learn how operatives like Neva were trained and brainwashed from a very young age. I don’t want to say any more about the plot but there are a few surprises in store, although I guessed most of them so it’s not that hard to work things out.

It was a good story that suffered a little bit by being patchy. Some parts were really riveting and others were quite slow. Neva was probably the only character I thought was fully fleshed out. The others were a bit thin. I believe this is to be a trilogy so there is opportunity to develop some other characters in future books. And I do want to read those other books. I did like the plot and the whole premise has a lot of potential. I would like to thank Netgalley, HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter and Samantha Lee Howe for providing a copy of the book to review. My opinions are my own.

I received an advance copy from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

The House of Killers follows Neva, a female assassin, a ruthless cold assassin, with no past, who goes rogue against her own organisation who trained her to kill anybody, no questions asked. Shortly into this story she crosses paths with Michael, a loner with his own issues, who works for Archive a highly secretive part of MI5.

Each chapter is told from a different character’s point of view. For me this works well and helps maintain the pace. The book is action packed, with multiple threads and twists, that keep you on your toes. Each of the characters is well developed, with great voices.

This is the start of a trilogy book 2 and 3 scheduled for May and July 2021, I believe. I look forward to reading these.

"The House of Killers" was such a pleasant surprise. Earlier this year I read the author's first novel, a classic domestic suspense, and loved it, so I was a bit surprised when I first read "The house of killers" synopsis, as it was a complete change of genre, so I came into it a bit skeptical. But my skepticism was not justified at all cause she delivered a super entertaining tale of assassins and secret agents I could not stop reading.

A ruthless female assassin. The MI5 agent on her trail. Ring any bells? Exactly! Killing Eve was the first thing that came to mind when I started reading, so I could not stop looking for similarities between them. Although there were a few, both Neva and Michael soon became characters of their own and I forgot about Eve and Villanelle.

Thanks to the alternating chapters this was a super dynamic and quick read. It was also interesting reading some of the other character's POV. The plot soon evolved from a cat and mouse chase into a deeper and more disturbing one.

Although I called the villain early on, the last 20% caught me completely unaware, adding a very interesting layer to one of the characters.

My only critique, and the reason this was not a 5 stars read for me, was that at the beginning there were quite a few coincidences during the investigation that made everything seem to come too easily to Michael and his team.

Well drawn characters, a tense plot that read like an action movie were you have no time to catch your breath till the end, and a very compelling twist made of "The house of killers" a very nice start to what now I know will be a trilogy, with the 2nd and 3rd installments coming out May and July 2021, so I couldn't be a happier reader right now.

Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Enjoyed the author’s previous book ‘The Stranger In My Bed’ and the same easy style writing is here again in this the 1st in a new series
So what’s the series about? Without giving too much away a kinda modern day twist on assasins, espionage, traitors, mind control , MI5 all mixed together under the shady organisation called ‘The Network’ but bery different to the usual books that cover these topics
We met a goodie and a real bad baddie as they try to outwit each other and in doing so realise they may have more in common than they realised
Although as said the writing style is easy, relaxed almost, there are some real brutal moments and also some very tense chapters, takes a good author to be able to mix both and make it work
Repugnant characters alongside ones to really like, all scarily believable and all easy to have a ‘minds eye’ of throughout
It did have it’s far fetched moments and a couple of easy to spot future plot twists but as they were just a few of each did not deter from the enjoyment of the book
Looking forward to Book 2 in this very promising series start

The House of Killers is the first part of a new spy thriller trilogy set mostly in London, about a beautiful young female assassin breaking away from the shadowy organisation that has controlled her all her life. The blurb describes it as a cross between Killing Eve and Jason Bourne, and the similarities are certainly there, but as the plot progresses Neva’s character comes into her own and a strong suspenseful tale emerges - although one requiring just as much suspension of disbelief. (I have only seen the TV show & movies, not read the books so don’t know how different the plots are.)

Neva is a highly trained and coldly efficient killer, taking out her victims when ordered to by The Network, without asking questions. When a new mark turns out to be a fellow assassin, “retired” for a perceived breakdown in their conditioning, Neva experiences something new - emotion - and sets out on a quest for freedom which begins with elimination of her handler. This brings her to the attention of Michael Kensington, a driven MI5 agent following a trail of executions for his secretive department, The Archive. Attracted to Neva in spite of what he knows, Michael must decide whether he can trust her - or will he too become one of her many victims?

Having got bored of psychological and serial killer plots, I’m reading a lot more action/spy thrillers, and especially like ones with a female heroine/antiheroine. This one was well done, as Neva is initially portrayed as too callous to like, but as we gradually learn how she was made to be that way, and see her develop both a conscience and a moral code, I liked her more and more. Similarly Michael makes an interesting hero - suspicious of everyone except the person he should be most afraid of. There were plenty of twists here - some I didn’t predict because they were so far-fetched, but it certainly made for entertaining and compulsive reading. There was a bit too much reliance on coincidence and I was disappointed to discover it’s all written in present tense, but I will definitely want to read the rest of the trilogy. As a bonus, this is a new to me author from the UKCBC Facebook group so counts towards my (rather feeble) #ukcbcchallenge for the year.

Thanks to NetGalley and One More Chapter for the ARC which allowed me to give an honest review. The House of Killers is published on 26th March 2021.

Serial Killer neva has been conditioned not to ask questions of the mysterious Network, to remain perfectly inourious and prennially cold-blooded. She must simple execute targets that they text her and live to bury the tale. But then she's tasked with terminating a fellow assassin and glimpses her own future in her collegues fate.

Neva is a well-trained and cold-bloodied assassin. The synopsis made me think of Villanelle from Killing Eve. Neva has been conditioned to be an emotionless killer so why did the retiring of a co-worker make her break free from the Netork? The pace is slow to start with then slowly builds it's pace. Neva gets the attention of the MI5's Michael Kensington who is following a trail of executions. The story is told from Neva and Michael's perspectives. This is the first book in a trilogy.

So if you were to ask me what my favorite thriller genre would be then I would have to admit, obviously, it's badass female assassins. So when "The House of Killers" by Samantha Lee Howe fell into my lap I was super excited to find a new series.

This one checks all the boxes. We have Neva, a assassin living in England who goes by her day killing marks assigned to her with no remorse. She lives by the code of her network: Don't ask questions. Curiosity Kills. Until one day, she starts to feel emotions she never had and see visions of her youth that she has no answer for. She soon goes off the rails and it isn't long before the network she works for decides she needs to be "retired" We also have Michael, a Mi5 field agent who works for a secret agency within who are trying to find people like Neva.

What follows is a exciting cat and mouse book with one of the most badass characters I have read this year.

What works: The plot: Secret assassin networks, Secret governmental agencies, kids stolen at youth to be brainwashed as killers, great back and forth POV chapters. This is a CW show on steroids and that is a complement.

What doesn't work: Oh, man…. I don't even know how to even portray what I think is wrong with the book. On one hand I think the pacing of the book is, for the most part, great. But the writing is just so awkward? And the dialogue would go from amazing to just stupid in a heartbeat. Like, who in the hell would talk like that?

And the lulls! We have the pacing ramp up to frantic pace and then boom, just die. Very frustrating when I'm totally engaged and then it takes me away. Like I'm all set to watch football all day on a Saturday and then my wife hands me chores. (Ok, that has never happened but, hypothetically, the lulls sucked that bad)

So is it a good book? Absolutely, I highly recommend it. You will just need to speed read though some slow parts. Overall, I loved the book but it fell just short of 4 stars on my review guide. But it's book 1 out of 3 and I'm definitely going to read the next one.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The House of Killers is my second read by Samantha Lee Howe. It is the first part of a new spy thriller trilogy set mostly in London. Neva is a highly trained killer, taking out her victims when ordered to by The Network. When she must terminate a fellow assassin she envisages her own future and sets out on a quest for freedom, which brings her to the attention of Michael Kensington, a driven MI5 agent.

This was a big change from the author's previous novel which came as a bit of a surprise. Even so, I thoroughly enjoyed The House of Killers although at first, I was dubious about the callous Neva. The plot was well written, it was heavy on action, and exciting and tense all the way through. There was some reliance on coincidence but the characters were all well-drawn. Chilling and extremely dark, I'm invested enough to read book two, Kill or Die. Highly recommended.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from One More Chapter via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

You believe only Lee Child (Jack Reacher) can write a suspenseful story that keeps you gripped for so long that you even forget to eat dinner? Then I must tell you, you haven't read The House of Killers. Many before me have now written their comments, so what is left for me to say?

The story is excellently constructed, and even though one begins to guess who could be behind all this, you do not know what is coming at the end! It reminded me of the movie with Audrey Hepburn "Wait until dark" where we at that time all jumped from our cinema chairs in those famous 10 seconds left... talking about Cinema, this series is CINEMA material or better television where they can take their time with a story. An absolutely amazing new Thriller by the very talented Samantha Lee Howe. I cannot wait until June when I shall be able to read more about these unforgettable characters. A great BRAVO to the author... well done !

The House of Killers is…wow….just wow! As I sit here reflecting on the story, wow is the word that keeps popping into my head, especially when I try to think of non-spoiler ways to describe my reading experience.

What I Loved

The blurb describes the story as Killing Eve meets Jason Bourne and, though I have not read Killing Eve, I agree with the Jason Bourne comparison. Neva is like the female version of Bourne, and her story blasts off the page like a runaway train with nothing to stop it or even slow it down. The Network trained Neva and conditioned her to be an assassin until a fateful job of retiring a coworker causes her to break free from her conditioning and find her authentic self that she had long been conditioned to suppress. This revelation is the very moment the metaphorical train takes off from the station, and it is still out there twisting and turning as it picks up speed.

I love the language of the narration. Direct and engaging language held me captivated as I alternately found myself in Neva and MI5 agent, Michael Kensington's heads, plus a few chapters told from support characters points of view. Usually, I would find so many narrators confusing and long for a story told in 3rd person, but Howe makes it work beautifully and uses it to keep me on my toes as I jump from car to car in this runaway train. The only issue I had with the narration is that the voices all sound the same. The plot indirectly justifies this, but I'm now entering the realm of spoilers, so I will leave it at that.

As Neva reconnects with herself, her character begins to blossom and develop very slowly and organically, like waking up from a long and deep sleep. I look forward to seeing further development in future novels as Neva's story continues. Her layers have only begun to emerge, and I am fascinated to learn more as she discovers who she is.

To Read or Not to Read

I've kept this review short and sweet to hopefully entice you without spoiling this story full of jaw-dropping revelations that never stop until the pages do. Any thriller lover will miss out if this book does not find a way into their hands. Like I said before… wow…just wow!

The House Of Killers is the first in this new series by Samantha Lee Howe and doesn’t disappoint.
The book is based around the main character, Neva. This girl is ruthless and extremely cold for the female of the species. Neva has decided to turn against the people who trained her. This is an action packed thriller that didn’t let up throughout the book and kept me turning the pages long after I shouldn’t have done. This has been billed as similar to Killing Eve and Jason Bourne and I have to agree although I think possibly because I have read this instead of watching it on the tv I feel a greater depth to the characters. A great start to this series and it will be interesting where this will go in the following books.

This book follows Neva, a female assassin, who decides to go rogue against the very people who trained her to kill the targets and ask no questions and Michael, an MIs agent, who becomes drawn into the murder cases that allow him to cross paths with Neva!
This book was an action packed read! I loved how the author allowed the readers to follow the different characters through their povs. There were so many treads that connected the characters and events to make for an amazing cliffhanging ending! The characters were giving great voices and depth! This book was such a great start to what I hope will be a good series! Overall, I would highly recommend this book to those who loved spy novels! I can't wait for the next book in this series!

Neva is a ruthless and cold assassin. She has no past. The only truth she knows is the here and now and The Network.
Michael is an MI5 agent. A loner. An agent in the highly secretive Archive ... Expect fireworks ...

This book was received as an ARC from HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book was interesting to the max. Fans of Jason Bourne, Fugitive, and Fight Club will appreciate this book. One of my favorite books of all time is the Chemist by Stephanie Meyer and I think The House of Killers really blew that book out of the water with the action and suspense. I am a fan of having a female be the villain so to speak and have her outsmart the Agent making him think twice about his next move and I was surprised I did not scream out loud of excitement at some parts. Also, there were so many twists and moments of the unexpected that made me want to read on and never stop. This is definitely a book to read in one sitting and you will not want to miss what happens next. Samantha Lee Howe did a brilliant job choosing the language that is sure to keep the reader engaged and the last author I read to do that successfully was Stephen King so kudos Samantha! I can't wait to hear what our library community thinks and I am sure they will be even more excited than I am.

We will consider adding this title to our Adult Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

Michael Kensington, an agent with M15, is recruited to a special task force called Archive, where he will be using his profiling skills to assist them in cold cases. Currently they are working on tracking something called "The Network" which they believe may have ties to both child abductions and serial executions. Serial killer Neva has grown up with The Network and is one of their hired killers. The problem is, now she has gone rogue. She wants out and she has the skills to stay hidden. Then one day Michael and Neva cross paths.......
This is like Killing Eve meets Mr & Mrs. Smith. I couldn't put it down. It had so much action going on, and every time I got to the end of the chapter I just had to read "just one more" to find out what was going to happen next. This is the first book in a new series and I can not wait for the next book. I can not not give this enough praise. I highly recommend it!

My thoughts about Samantha Lee Howe's Brilliant Hard-hiting Spy Thriller The House Of Killers, was truly magnificent, with its breathtaking suspense, that had me hooked from the very first page, blows you away, a serial killers obsession with an MI5 agent who has been hired to catch her was incredible. The two main  characters definitely stand out in this powerful spy thriller that is truly remarkable. Author Samantha Lee Howe not only she writes a powerful story, but the tension she brings between the two main characters is truly outstanding. The House Of Killers is the first book in the trilogy series, which is unique and brilliantly written, which deserves appreciation. The story of The House Of Killers begins were we see Serial killer Neva has been conditioned not to ask questions of the mysterious Network, to remain perfectly incurious and perennially cold-blooded.She must simply execute the targets they text her and live to bury the tale. But then she’s tasked with terminating a fellow assassin and glimpses her own future in her colleague’s fate. When she leaves flowers on the gravesite, someone notices. In come Agent Michael Kensington knows he’ll have his work cut out for him when he’s recruited by MI5 onto operation Archive to piece together patterns in cold cases and catch serial killer neva was just fantastic. An assassin obsessed with hell, a fugitive tortured by the secrets of her past, a woman destined to unthread him is going to blow you away. Take a bow Samantha, you have created a brilliant hard-hitting spy thriller, that not only it's an opening of a trilogy series, but one of the best thrillers I've read this year which is highly recommended. I can not wait to read the rest of the books in the trilogy soon. The House Of Killers is going to be big this year. I would like to say thank you to Author Samantha Lee Howe, Publishers One More Chapter, and Netgalley for giving me a chance to read and review this outstanding explosive thriller.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐💥💥💥💥💥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

I absolutely loved The House of Killers from the first page to the last.

Neva is a ruthless assassin who goes rogue against The Network for whom she works.

Michael is an agent for M15 in the special department entitled Archive.

As luck would have their paths cross and neither of them will be the same again.

Can they trust each other, can they trust anyone but themselves.

I cheered on both of them.

The action is non stop . The pages quickly turn.

The lights stay on : just one more chapter.

I am tempted to give a hint but I wont.

The House of Killers is the first book in a trilogy : can't wait. I will be first in line to read the next adventure or is it misadventure of Neva and Michael.

Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter for an exhilarating read !

Bring on Book 2 !

Being an avid fan of spy thrillers, I was immediately drawn to this first in the House of Killers trilogy by Samantha Howe, and all I can say is wow, this was worth all the stars and more. Howe's slick, pacey style of writing pulled me in from the first page, as did the tight plotting, fascinating characters and brilliantly constructed gripping plotline told through various perspectives which kept me turning the pages and gasping at more than a few unexpected twists and revelations I hadn't seen coming. Touching on some painful, thought-provoking issues, this is a clever story, with elements of the psychological as well as action/spy thriller which I found particularly appealing and made it that little bit different. Highly recommended!!

Killing Eve which comes to mind when reading this book, with a ruthless Assassin, being chased by an MI5 agent. But once you begin the story it’s not killing Eve.

Neva is a beautiful young female assassin who breaks away from the shadowy organisation that has controlled her for all of her life, this is a suspenseful story. Neva is a trained killer, she takes out her targets with no questions asked. But when a new mark turns out to be another assassin who has retired, Neva experiences something new to her ‘emotion’. This sets of her quest for freedom, but that first means getting rid of her handler.

She gains the attention of MI5 and Michael Kensington, a driven MI5 agent who is following a trail of executions for his department. The Archive. Michael is attracted to Neva despite what he knows of her, can he trust her? Or will he be another of her victims?

This is perfect for readers of spy novels, espionage, action. With a female character that starts off as a cold closed off person, but as her story unfolds it’s all she has really known and as she starts to develop a bit you begin to warm to her, as she develops a conscience and a moral code.

There may be a few twists that are a little unbelieveable but it is a story and it works well. Keeping the plot flowing. This is book one of a trilogy.

I would like to thank #netgalley and #HarperCollinsUk and #OneMoreChapter for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest, fair, unbiased review.

Sympathetic characters, interesting, exciting story. Still, I can’t give a maximum score because it’s more of a good craftsmanship, and it lacks the plus that makes a book memorable and impassable. It is surprising when an assassin is the sympathetic who automatically kills when he sees it as inevitable and necessary. And even when we expect emotions from her, it turns out that even then the cold calculation is driven by the fact that you can’t leave unsewn threads.

I really needed a break from tense evening news and reading books about social justice. This book was a great remedy. With trained assassins seeking others like them I was removed from daily stress into a world of criminal intrigue. No spoilers but this book captivated me till the last pages. I’ll watch for more in this series.

This is an exciting spy thriller with plenty of action and great characters – the two main ones are Neva an assassin working for the ‘Network’ (the bad guys) and Michael who works for the ‘Archive’ – ostensibly the good guys. The book is structured to reveal the plot with each chapter revealed through their opposing positions.

At the beginning of the book we find Neva breaking away from the Network as her conditioning splits and reveals some suppressed memories. She confronts her handler and the situation ends up with the death of her handler. Shortly after this she meets Michael – and their lives continue to merge.

Very clever plot, obviously (I hope) purely fictional and presumably unrealistic (again, I hope) but it is exciting and a very satisfying read. Loved the characters and can only visualise Neva as Villanelle from Killing Eve. So, if that is your kind of thing – you really should read this excellent novel.

Thank you to the author, publishers and NetGalley for providing an ARC via my Kindle in return for an honest review.

I don’t always find myself drawn in by spy thrillers. This one however had everything you would want in a read, and more. Spy networks, assassins, brain washing, budding romance, action, MI5. The good guys against the bad. But who is really good and who really bad? The lines get blurred fast and you find yourself brought along on a rollercoaster. It dips a little in the middle of the storyline, almost to let you catch your breath. It almost lost me. But then it picked back up fast. I won’t share any more on the story. All I will say is that I will be looking out for book two. I need to know what happens next!
