Sometimes, survival depends on not being seen.
I should know. That’s the only way I’ve survived. Getting accepted into a prestigious university was my chance at freedom; to escape and live without fear and resentment.

And with no emotional attachments--or at least that was the plan.

Until I see Egan.

He’s sexy, mysterious, and has muscles in all the right places. He invokes feelings I don’t want or understand.

The more he shows up, the harder of a time I have remembering why staying away from him was a good idea. But he brings deep, dark secrets that alter my entire world.

Monsters exist. Witches cast spells. And animals may be human after all.

I either embrace fate and enter a strange new world full of risks like never before or walk away.

Maybe, I'm destined for heartache because sometimes, love isn't worth what it costs to fall.

If you can't get enough of books by Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, K.F. Breene, Kelly St. Claire, Shannon Mayer, Leia Stone, and Jaymin Eve, then you'll love this paranormal romance.

Reading has always been one of my favorite hobbies, even as a little girl. When I was a toddler, my parents would read stories to me over and over. I would hear them so often that I had the books memorized and could recite the story word by word.

My favorite genres are fantasy, paranormal, and contemporary romance. So of course that's what I'm inclined to write.

I have a husband, two young daughters, and a mini Australian Shepherd. I've lived in Tennessee the majority of my life and love the state.

I'm extremely addicted to caffeine and enjoy drinking coffee and lattes.

World build:
Felt a little unfinished. There are aspects or rather holes I hope are filled in with book 2.

Storyline:
Reminded me of a previous read with just enough differences to make me continue reading. Insta-loveish.... which can be a struggle for me at times however it fit this read pretty well. It was not exciting but was not boring either. Kinda on the fence with this leaning to the positive side.

FMC:
Jumpy, boarder line rude, and at times selfish I found Jade tough to enjoy at times. We have the typical past of abuse by an aunt, which drives Jade to martial arts yet she goes years enduring the abuse. Hard to except that part for me. This aspect leads to Jade craving isolation and rejecting friendships or relationships. Something about this character was a miss for me.

MC:
Egan was phenomenal! He was the sole reason I kept reading! Great character. Little mysterious (hope to find out more soon). Dominate. Caretaking. The way he wants to provide for Jade is sexy as hell.

Secondary characters:
This was win for me. Great, interesting characters! Added some humor and excitement to the read!

I will try out book 2 for sure.

Happy reading,
DD 💕

This started off SO good but then just fizzled out into a very mild ember. The chemistry and tension between the hero and heroine were off the charts until about two-thirds of the way in. After they got together it just went away. That was what was carrying the story for me.

Jade was very standoffish, blunt, and awkward to the point of being rude at times. It's justified enough with how she grew up and how she was mistreated. I will admit that she had some great zingers along the way. Though there were a few times in the novel that she slut-shamed other female characters for what they were wearing and how they were all over Egan. Just a detail I'd rather not have included in the books I read.

Egan was such a gentleman and I love him for it! I've gotten so used to reading about alpha-holes that when I encounter a male character who actually feels emotion and cares for the heroine without going caveman every second they're together or another guy talks to her it astounds me.

This ended on a cliffhanger that I didn't appreciate. By that point, I wasn't all that invested in the story so it didn't evoke the strong emotions the author was hoping for. I'll probably give the next book a chance since I have quite a wait in between audiobook releases at the moment.

The Audio Book:

The narration was fine. The characters were distinguishable from one another and there were no weird background noises. Though there were moments when it was very obvious that the narrator's voice got very nasally out of nowhere. It was just a detail that happened maybe a handful of times throughout the narration but it did end up pulling me out of the story.

I fudging loved this book!

It’s so much more action packed and thrilling, and opens up with a bam!

Jade, is very stubborn and hard to understand at first. But as you move through the story, her character begins to develop and you see her taking risks and standing up for herself, learning how to be stronger.

Jade runs away from her abusive home. She also meets her fated mate at university, and finds a new group of friends. While there, she also encounters enemies and a terrifying conspiracy that threatens to destroy the dragon shifter population.

The world building is on point and as usual, the stakes grow higher. I loved every moment, and I am glad I warmed up to Jade at the end of the story.

This is a very good urban fantasy book, and is what I love to read about.

TSTL female with a ridiculous cliffhanger

This book is filled with contradictions, a grating main character, and a plot/villains so obvious—except to, of course, the female MC who ultimately puts herself in danger because she is TSTL. At the peak of the confrontation with the (eye roll) bad guys, just as she is about to die and admits her love to her fated mate that she has met and run away from then back to then away from and back to and away from and back to over the space of ONE WHOLE MONTH…the book ends. A trilogy is great if each of the books have their own conflict that is resolved within the book under one main story arc that spans the books, being ultimately resolved in the third book. This book is just cuts off—mid conflict. Perhaps the next book will introduce the main story arc? As this is where I stop reading, I will never know nor feel the loss.

I am in love with Egan, the dragon shifter. He is so gentlemanly and kind. Til you mess with those he cares about. I highly recommend this read, but beware the cliffhanger!

2024 Reads #398/250
2.75⭐️

Huge cliffhanger. Reads like 1 book split in at least 2 parts. I started book 2 to read the outcome of the cliffhanger and feel like the cutoff/cliffhanger was unnecessary. This is a 3 book series and could easily have been a standalone or duology with a more natural ending. The box set of #1-#3 is only 671 pages total. Additionally, the MFC is insufferable. She acts bratty, thinking she is independent and obstinate.

It was a very YA shifter romance. Which id imagine was the goal, but idk bc kindle unlimited recommended I read it so I didn’t actually read anything about it before starting it. Everything was just a surprise.

I’m still gonna read the rest of the series bc it’s not bad it’s just not something I would have picked had I actually read about it, but obv now I have to know what happens.

Awesome and Evil

So totally awesome that we get to meet Sadie and her pack again, I wasn’t ready to say goodbye. And Jade’s awkwardness and verbal diarrhea is priceless. But COME ON!!!!! That cliffhanger is downright evil!! I’m glad book 2 is less than a month away. 😉🥰

Dragon Mate is the first book in the Hidden King series and focuses on Egan. We met him (and his friends) in the Wolf Born Trilogy and I am one person that was so excited to see him get his own story.

Jade is attending Kortright University to escape the highly abusive life with her Aunt and pursue a better life. Running into the sexy man Egan, throws her for a loop and has her question all of her rules she set for herself.

Read to find out how Egan shows Jade that life is more than a set of rules and he is willing to fight for those that he loves.

I recommend this book to all lovers of paranormal because this series offers a bit of witches, shifters, dragons and more. This book was a page turner that will have you lose track of time as you HAVE to see what happens next. Expect laugh out loud moments, protective friends, drama (of course) and twists you won't see coming. Note that this ends in a cliffhanger.

Jen has taken us back to Kortright University with her first book in the Hidden King series. Dragon Mate centers on Jade as she struggles to overcome her past, reach for her future, and meets a few familiar faces along the way.

I will admit Jade isn't my favorite out of all of Jen's main female characters. Jade is human and while she knows martial arts and is a strong fighter she also has been abused for years both physically and emotionally by her Aunt while her mother sits on the sidelines. This, of course, has caused some trauma, she's quick to anger, doesn't communicate well, mistrusts others, and has a lack of confidence among other issues. However, I liked that she got the courage to leave and wants to stand on her own while creating a better future for herself. The problem is she's holding herself back, she wasn't really willing to open up to anyone even when they kept trying. Her issues had made her wish-washy with her actions and she was a little annoying but she got better towards the end. By the end of the book, Jade had turned a corner for me.

If Kortright sounds familiar it's because it's the college that Sadie and the gang from Jen's Wolf Born trilogy attended, however, this time the story centers more on my favorite dragon, Egan who happens to be Jade's Mate. Some really interesting mythology is revealed about dragon shifters and I loved seeing Egan again, I truly loved him the best out of all the guys in Wolf Born and I'm so happy he got his own series and that I get to see more of his personality. Egan is just as gentlemanly, kind, and caring as he was before but now there is a nervousness, and a lack of confidence but there is also attentiveness, possessiveness, and passion. I liked seeing these new layers of Egan and hope to learn more.

Through all the relationship drama that both he and Jade had, Sadie and everyone else from their group are very much present in the story, trying to help. I loved how involved they are but as supporting characters, seeing them again, seeing their lives after the previous events, and seeing them from another person's perspective was great. Sadie is still kind, the group is closer than ever, and Roxy is still Roxy. The dynamics of the group are even more interesting when Jade is added to the picture.

Dragon Mate was very entertaining if not frustrating at times (looking at Jade). It was interesting seeing a main character that wasn't an alpha type, who was just trying to hold her life together, and seeing a love interest that I already know go into a new relationship. I have some serious questions about Jade's family history, it may be nothing but more than one thing is off there. Then there is the mystery surrounding the dragon shifters, I got just a taste of what Egan has been hiding and I'm dying for more. Hidden Mate had a dramatic ending and I have a feeling the extra drama will continue in the next book Dragon Heir.

Page turner

A great book with an interesting storyline, it’s great to see that a mate bond could turn a human mate. Recommended for readers who love reading about dragon shifters and the supernatural animal shifters. A great page turner and very difficult to put down. I’m looking forward to reading more and Jade and her new friends

Irritating MC

The MC has been physically and mentally abused throughout her life. Even though she was taught martial arts, she decided to take the beating instead of defending herself. She did not have to hurt the other person, but at least block hits and kicks.

As a result, she is very defensive and lashes out at everyone. Worse, now that she can’t help herself being attractive to a guy at her new school.

Now, I understand trauma. What i don’t understand is lashing out at people who are nice to you. I would rather the MC ignore them and walk away. The more she opened her mouth, the more I disliked her.

I liked the other students in the book, even the one who was snippy. Unfortunately, it did not balance our the negativity of the MC.

I’m stopping at one.

Well. What the heck? Just horrible!!

No character development, no growth, no depth, no world description. Just NOTHING.

I literally can’t tell you anything about those characters. I can’t even explain why they are so supposedly in love with each other OR about which kind of friendships with all the other characters others talk about.

So many names, so many *feelings* and NOTHING reaches the reader. Like what the heck?

After discovering the author and reading some of her books, I really expected something else.

You could really notice the growth and development with her books. Especially, when you read them in order. But this book was just horrible. I don’t have any other fucking words.

Just nothing. I am deeply disappointed and won’t continue this series.

I had not heard of this author and I love paranormal books so I thought I would give this series a go. While reading, I found that there are numerous other series related to this one that I believe would have helped me understand the character a bit more. Although you can read this series as a standalone, I would like to have started at the beginning.

This book follows Jade who has run away from home to get away from an abusive Aunt. She sees Egan at college and feels something instantly. This story takes you on their voyage of discovery and along the way Jade meet several people that become her friends. The first book follows heir introductions and takes you into their paranormal world.

I loved the idea of this story so I dug right in. It was easy to follow and super easy to read. I felt for Had as she had a hard time trusting people due to all the abuse he has seen in her life. She is also afraid to let anyone in due to the loss of her father. There were a few instances that I felt were rushed and I felt that some holes int he story were not answered. I hoping that in the next 2 books that we will get the info that was missing. The end leaves on a major cliffhanger but lucky for me, its out and I can dig right in. I found this book super easy to read and fun. I give this book 4 stars.

I would have given this 3* but because someone dared to say this book was anywhere near the works of Ilona Andrews and Jaymin Eve just put me off.
First of all Ilona Andrews are TITANS. They write almost flawless books with plots that transport you. This wasn't even in the vicinity of that. Let's say if you want an example. Ilona Andrew's books are in US and this book by Ms. Grey is somewhere in the Philippines. No, just NO.
Before you make comparisons like that just read your book again and then read one of theirs.
And btw the predictability of this book was very high. I don't think I'm gonna read anymore from this series or author.
It seems to me like someone that likes to play in the big leagues but didn't finish pewee yet.
I liked the cover though, and the fact there were dragons involved, although quite sparingly.

I wouldn't go so far as to call this bad. Certainly, the mechanical writing is perfectly competent. I don't remember any big editing foul-ups and I do always appreciate a big ol' cinnamon roll hero. So, I really liked Egan. (I'm fairly sick of all the alpha a-holes. So, a softer kinder hero is nice to see.) But I would call the book super inelegant. There just isn't any subtly in the plotting, emotional arc, mystery, or romance. It's all just splashed harshly and half-haphazardly on the page.

The book would have been vastly improved with the addition of Egan's POV. Jade's traumatic past didn't feel real or pertinent (though maybe it'll be more relevant in future books). I didn't believe she'd be such a mouse if she'd also spent years being taught to defend and respect herself. And "I can't allow myself any friends" seems an illogical response to it. Her diarrhea of the mouth wasn't cute, it was just annoying. I think I got whiplash with all the emotional yes-no-yes-go away-come back etc. The villain was painfully obvious. And I'm hoping this is a spin-off of another series, otherwise there is just a lot of history referenced but never explained. (Edit: It turns out to be a spin-off of The Wolfborn Trilogy). Then, it ends on a cliffhanger with nothing concluded. So, I didn't finish it feeling particularly charitable.

I do actually have books two and three. Who knows, maybe I'll be in the mood to read it some time. But I'm not betting on it.

Dragon Mate

This is a fun read! I love the interactions and Jade is a strong MFC despite her past trauma. Her finding friendship and love made me devour this first book. It does end on a cliffhanger, so im excited to start book 2.

Well I didn’t expect those two assholes too be working together honestly. That ending was so screwed up. I need book two ASAP . I’m convinced her psycho aunt has something to do with all this but who knows. She’s a psycho anyways . I don’t like her weak willed mother either parents are supposed to protect their children point blank.

What a great start to an adventure.

So I loved that she has a Different take on Humans and Supes. The idea of a Human becoming a Mate to a Supe reminds me of my first PNR Love Christen Feehan's Dark series. I Love the way she describes things like everyday People would. It's a very cool story and I can't wait for more!!

This has to be my favorite Jen L Grey book to date, and that's saying alot since I love all her books!! This series started off so strong. With characters we already know and love, it was so easy to just jump right back into the world and fall in love all over again. The story and character development is phenomenal. The ending left out on one heck of a cliffhanger and I cannot wait to see what comes next!

Ughhh, I'm at 75% and feel like my eyes are going to be permanently damaged from the amount of times I've rolled them. The main character is SOOOO dumb and the drama is completely contrived. I've been grumpy today though ... So maybe it's me??

I guess cliffhangers do work because I just finished and will have to at least read the first part of book two to see what happens.

This brings me to another pet peeve ... This felt like half a book and book two starts off exactly where book one left off, in the middle of the story. For me, each book should have a resolution, even if there is an overarching plotline, each book should have its own plot as well or it's just one book, not a series.

**Cliffhanger Spoiler **
She snatches a bracelet off the witch, which has been controlling the falcon and she gets the falcon to let her go. Somehow the witch disappears ... And now I no longer care 😘
