So much better than I expected!
I’d previously read about Kate Bishop when she was a member of the Young Avengers, but seeing her with the new cast of the West Coast Avengers (WCA) was much enjoyed.

Even though I know it’s not for everyone, I really love the chaotic-good vibes of teenage superhero teams. The little quips and arguments amongst the WCA was funny to read and realistic. The appearances of all our favourite teen superheroes like America Chavez, Miles Morales, and Gwenpool were also fun to read about.

Hawkeye: Team Spirit collects Marvel Comics issues West Coast Avengers 5-10 and War of the Realms: Journey Into Mystery 1-5 written by Kelly Thompson and The McElroys with art by Daniele Di Nicuolo, Gang Hyuk Lim, Moy R, and André Lima Araújo.

In the first collection of stories, the Master of Evil West Coast have set their eyes on the West Coast Avengers being lead by the Hawkeyes. Kate Bishop takes center stage leading a young group of heroes.

In the War of the Realms tie in, Balder the Brave gathers a group of heroes in clouding Kate Bishop, Miles Morales, Wonder Man, Sebastian Druid, Thori, and Death Lockett in a cross country trip to protect Thor’s baby sister.

Both stories are team books that get a chance to show off Kate Bishop’s team leading skills. The West Cost Avengers feels like what we would get if the CW ever starts producing Marvel TV shows with a large focus on team member’s romantic relationships. I wouldn’t say it’s bad by any means, but just not what I was looking for. Journey Into Mystery has a lot more action to it, and you don’t really need to know what is happening in the larger War of the Realm story to appreciate the tie-in. The art was fine throughout the books. I never felt taken out of the story or impressed with the art throughout the two books.

one thing about me is that i enjoy the west coast avengers. i will defend this team to those who haven’t accepted them. i believe that we need more of them. A+

another thing about me is that i have not, am currently not, and will likely never be invested in the war of the realms. in fact, halfway through reading war of the realms: journey into mystery, i finally asked my brother what exactly was going on here. i am still not 100% sure about what is going on here. This collection comes in two parts, collecting the West Coast Avengers (2018) #5-10, which I would rate as 5 stars, and War of the Realms: Journey Into Mystery (2019) #1-5 which I would generously rate as 3 stars.

4.5 stars for West Coast Avengers.
2.5 stars for War of the Realms: Journey Into Mystery.

I really like the West Coast Avengers team and how they interact with each other. Quinton is so funny and his relationship with Gwen is so cute (also Jeff!). Poor Kate has a lot of family & relationship drama to deal with, Clint's just cruisin' in a supporting role but I really like his mentor role and the way he calls her Katie. Fun to see [spoiler] again after Young Avengers!, it would have been nice to see him interact more with America instead of just Kate because they were team members, too. Speaking of America, I would love to see more in-depth character focus on her in future, apart from just the dating angle, I mean. My favourite art style in this book was done by Gang Hyuk Lim, who did chapter 8-9: their faces are so expressive and I love the colours, especially in chapter 8!

War of the Realms is, I think, a bit of a side story in a bigger Thor-related event (which I have not read and don't plan to). I'm not a huge fan of the Thor comics (except for stories with Loki as main character), so I was not drawn into this story. I quite liked Sebastian Druid as a comic relief character, and I enjoyed the friendship between Spidey Miles and the god-dog Thori. Wonder Boy seems fun. But overall, I did not like the art and the plot hook/villains were pretty meh.

If I can find a complete West Coast Avengers GN, I will sell this book. Until then I will keep it for the West Coast shenanigans only.

Love the McElroy's but it's actually the first half that I adore. Although a big part of that is I had not heard of the War of the Realms before. Although even then I've certainly read more confusing multi-comic tie in's before, so that's something. I think that the story itself is quite contained - baby road trip - which helps it make sense and still be fun. But I just found the characters and plot a lot more endearing in the first half, although I did love getting to see Miles. But yeah I'm crossing my fingers for a Kate/Noh-Varr/Johnny poly couple. America and Ramone were very cute! America was SO smooth. I love America in a team up I think she really thrives surrounded by others. America and Kate are very believable and fun friends. Clint is a fun mentor and I always love when his hearing aids come into play. The LAND SHARK! Gwen Pool! I loved how she seemed to be mainly interested in Kid Omega to boost her storyline but was still blushing. IDK very relatable as an acearo myself. Kid Omega fit in well and was never actually annoying. Love it! Absolutely delightful time.

The two series collected into here don't have much in common besides, well, Hawkeye. I had already read the West Coast Avengers issues, so I was trying to skip ahead but couldn't help pausing to enjoy Jeff the landshark again. The subset of War of the Realms in here is plenty interesting - without the greater context of the war I was a little confused but still able to enjoy it. Not sure if I'm intrigued enough to branch back to whatever is going on with the War of the Realms for this instance though.

The West Coast Avengers issues were better than The War of the Realms issues but that gave me Miles and Thori who were great fun.

"Hawkeye: Team Spirit" collects issues #5-10 of West Coast Avengers and issues #1-5 of War Of The Realms: Journey Into Mystery. Both runs feature Kate Bishop as a member of different superhero teams. I had drastically different thoughts about the two different comic runs this book collected, so I've decided to split my review up accordingly:

West Coast Avengers

This is probably one of my favorite of the new superhero teams Marvel's come up with. All of the characters click really well together, and I love seeing them interact with each other - Gwenpool especially adds a fun layer to the banter of the crew. I'm also always happy to see America, Kate, and Clint, so it was fun to see them interacting with one another! I'm not as familiar with some of the other members of the team, but I thought they were all well-written for comic book characters. One of the narrative devices of this comic is that it includes talking head monologues, like the kind on reality television - at first it was strange seeing this in comic form, but it grew on me after a while. It really works for the style of the comic! Also, Gwen gets a tiny pet shark (with legs!) and that was so fun. Not mention that almost everyone on this superhero team is queer - that definitely sold me on the book, too.

On that note, there were some odd artistic choices for this comic. In general I liked the art but there were some panels where the female characters were drawn with boob proportions that made no sense. Not to mention the random cutouts in Kate's suit. There's one panel in the comic where she gets nicked by a knife because it hits one of the cutouts in her suit and I was sitting there like "If you weren't wearing a suit with completely unnecessary cutouts, maybe you wouldn't have gotten hurt." I don't know the gender of the artist who worked on this run, but sometimes the art seemed a bit objectifying, and that was just weird. Still, I really liked this comic overall - I'd give it 4/5 stars if I was reviewing this alone.

War Of The Realms: Journey into Mystery

I was unfamiliar with most of the characters featured in this team-up (not to mention the events leading up to the narrative in general) so I had a hard time getting into this book. The writers keep mentioning other comic runs during character dialogue and telling the reader to check out other arcs, when I wish we could just finish on the story at hand. At the same time, I can acknowledge that plugging other arcs is pretty common for Marvel - it's a frustrating constant in a lot of Marvel comics.

Despite this, I had some fun watching Miles Morales and Kate Bishop run around in a camper van with some other heroes, even if I wasn't as familiar with the other characters. Miles's friendship with Thori (a dog-god) was super cute, and I wish I'd seen more of the other supers becoming buddies. I also enjoyed the road trip style hijinks - I just wish I'd understood more of the references in this comic (or that the writers gave me more context instead of just trying to get me to read other comics). The art was so-so. Half the time I hated it, the other half I loved it. I wouldn't recommend this to someone unless they had a pretty thorough knowledge of most late 2010s Thor comics, as well as an understanding of the Skrull Secret Invasion arc. If I were reading this on it's own, I'd probably give it a 3/5 or a 2/5.

Collects "West Coast Avengers" 6-10 and "War of the Realms" 1-5. Buy it for WCA and ignore WotR. WCA 1-5 is a available in "Hawkeye: Go West" It was a shame that that series only lasted 10 issues because it was funny, irreverent and inclusive, putting new spins on old comic tropes. I've loved Kate Bishop since she starred in Young Avengers and her costarring role in Matt Fraction's run on "Hawkeye" only.made me love her more. Especially when she stole Lucky the Pizza Dog and.moved to LA.🐕

I have no idea what was going on in WotR, but I did like Thor's talking God...Gog, Thori.

First half, West Coast Avengers: City of Evil - lots of fun. Great cast of quirky queer misfits. Jeff the land shark puppy must be protected at all costs. 4.5/5

Second half, War of the Realms: Journey into the Mystery - kinda a miss. Now of the characters popped, although curious about the ghost cowboys, Kushala, and Sebastian Druid, so at least it got me interested in those mystical characters. Not the worst thing I’ve read but eh. I guess the twist was nice and not too cliched, but still didn’t make the story stand out. 3.2/5

The characters are okay but they fall a little flat. I enjoy the characters on their own but together, they are a bit annoying (Kid Omega, for one)
There are some entertaining moments like the adoption of Jeff.
I think there were just too many characters in one story.

This was another case of me not reading the fine print and just getting a title based on the character featured.

Don't get time wrong - this book collects two very solid stories involving Kate Bishop working with others - these being the second big arc of the more recent West Coast Avengers comic and the War of the Realms: Journey Into Mystery title.

However, this compilation offers no new materials or even perspectives on these stories. So it's just a repackaging of existing stories.

Like all of the other Kelly Thompson stuff, I really loved this for the most part. The West Coast Avengers arc was amazing as usual, and Gwenpool is always a win, especially when she adopted Jeff, their mascot shark. Funny, quirky and full of action all the way through.
As for the War of the Realms: Journey Into Mystery segment, I just wasn't on board with the artwork. It was a little jarring, to be honest, but the writing was solid, and was fairly fast paced until the end.

This last volume was fun but didn't love up to the first 2 volumes.

The artwork wasn't quite as good for the West Coast Avengers issues and it wasn't to my taste in the Journey Into Mystery issues.

There were some interesting developments for Kate in the 2nd half of the WCA run but with it being a team book there is a loss in that individual development and intimacy that makes stories engaging for me.

I've read the JiM mini that isn't written by Kelly Thompson before and it enjoyed it more this time. At this point I've also read Secret Warriors and the Everything Burns storyline so that added a little to it. I still need to read Sorcerer's Supreme!

Two stories - I enjoyed the first one, about Kate trying to lead the West Coast Avengers, but was mainly confused by the second one, which is clearly part of a bigger crossover event I didn't follow.
