Sherri L. Smith is the award-winning author of YA novels LUCY THE GIANT, SPARROW, HOT SOUR SALTY SWEET, FLYGIRL and ORLEANS. In October 2015, she makes her middle grade debut with THE TOYMAKER’S APPRENTICE from G.P. Putnam and Sons for Penguin Random House.

She loves her family, travel, chocolate chip cookies, reading, and and a really good cup of tea.
Maybe we're spoiled after the She Persisted series, which is quite well done, but this Little Golden Book was incredibly lackluster.
I didn't get any sense of Misty as a person. The digital illustrations are bland. I know that fitting a biography into a Little Golden Book is a challenge, but this book would have been far better had it focused on one aspect of Misty's life instead of attempting to cram in so much into so few pages.
This Little Golden Book introduces ballet prodigy Misty Copeland to the youngest readers. The first Black principal dancer in the history of the American Ballet Theatre—who didn't start dancing until she was almost thirteen—continues to impress the world and pave the way for young Black girls to chase their dreams. The intended audience is 4-8 years and preschool-3rd grade. I selected this book because this will teach students to not be jealous of others and be happy for each other even if they get a part you want.
This is a really great little golden book. I thought it was insightful, inspirational and enlightening. There have been several other biographical children’s books about Misty Copeland and I really think this one captures Misty Copeland’s story. This illustrations give this little book a fairy tale quality. Misty looks like a princess. Highly recommend this book.
