How To Do You: The Life Changing Art of Mastering Your Thoughts and Taking Control of Your Life

Rate this book
This is not just ‘another life coaching book’. No, really, bear with me. This is very, very different. What makes this book essential reading - and different to other self-help manuals – is that it distils my own crazy life experiences alongside the coaching tools and techniques I have honed from working with thousands of clients over more than 15 years and delivering genuinely life-changing results. This book presents my personal story and my own unique way of working in a friendly, approachable, ‘you-can-do-it’ way. Because you can. It is a practical guide that will help people to understand and address the specifics of their own thinking, which is the real key to realising how problems in life can become emotional blockages, and how to make the fundamental changes that will provide solid foundations for the future. I focus on helping people to overcome the deep-seated limiting beliefs that hold them back from being the person they want to be; I help them to step out of emotional childhood and bring them into emotional adulthood, living the life they truly desire and deserve. I teach people how to stop blaming anyone else for how they feel and instead how to step into a strong, powerful, unshakeable mindset.

I really like the author and the way she challenges some really common negative thought processes that lead to anxiety, difficulties in relationships, and generally hold people back in life. This book described her different approach and ways of thinking to these areas of life which can be a helpful place to start. I think the book would be more useful, if it could offer more in terms of how to change these thoughts processes, rather than one small and perhaps simplistic worksheet at the end of every chapter. There’s lots of reference to ‘doing the work’ but not what this means in practical terms. Case studies weren’t really case studies but praise from clients with a little bit of back story which got a bit irritating as it made the book feel like a self promotion exercise.

I would give it more stars if it wasn’t the “publicity” she did to herself with the reviews of the case studys and the last pages. It was really nice to read, but felt I was being sold something. And there was no need for that.

Useful tools to change your mindset, but some of the case studies and workbooks felt repetitive and simplified

I was really excited to read this book and I have to admit that it turned out a bit of a disappointment. The author makes some valid points and offers great prompts to explore some of your limiting beliefs and thoughts. However, I think that without a real journey and therapy with a coach, this simply remains a journaling exercise. Seeing your issues on paper is certainly a start but it’s not enough to solve them. It takes time and a major shift in mindset and/or overcoming whatever lies underneath.

In addition to this, I agree with what some other people wrote: it feels a bit as a self-promotion book with all the past clients’ stories and feedback. I don’t think it was necessary to add one in each chapter. Unless, of course, that was the purpose. Maybe it was.

I thought i’d love this book based on the fact i’ve enjoyed sone podcasts the author has guested but no, I didn’t.
I was put off immediately by a thought going along the lines of “anxiety is a feeling caused by thoughts so change the thoughts and you change the feeling”. I guess it can be only said by someone who hasn’t woken up with feeling physically sick because of debilitating anxiety and believe me, changing the thoughts as hard as one is capable does not work. The book managed to also have a chapter called “diets don’t work” which also signaled to me that its time to close it and not finish. So thats what I did.

How To Do You blends honesty, tough love, and actionable mindset coaching. Jacqueline Hurst uses her own journey and years of coaching experience to show how thought patterns become emotional blocks, and how to break through them. The tone is friendly yet powerful, pushing you toward a stronger, more confident version of yourself. It’s a motivating read for anyone who wants real change, not quick fixes.

Jacqueline offers both practical advice and highlights her own journey to show what is possible in an open, authentic way. This book is a useful reference in all weather - as a reminder to celebrate and be grateful along with tools to navigate the storms when they come, and pass. It really helps readers learn how to turn their suffering into peace.
