Tobias Finch #1

Latent Wolf

Rate this book
Being a fifteen-year-old wolf shifter is totally overrated. Especially when I can’t actually turn into a wolf. To make matters worse, I’ve got a secret every other shifter would kill me for. A secret that got my parents killed.

It’s a secret I was planning on keeping - until I met Lucy Stone and the Clear Creek pack. Now two of the pack have gone missing, and there may be a link between the recent kidnappings and my parents’ deaths.

After fifteen years of hiding, the truth is finally catching up with me. The question is – do I keep running, or do I stand and fight?

"Latent Wolf" is the first instalment in the epic paranormal adventure/romance Tobias Finch series.

Paid Book Review: Latent Wolf by Elisha Kemp

Thank you to Elisha Kemp for sending me a copy of Latent Wolf for review!

SPOILER FREE REVIEW:

I want to preface this by saying although this is a paid review that it in NO WAY affects my review of this book.

As most of you know, I am a HUGE fan of the paranormal books, and every time I grow attached to a series I am afraid that I will never find a story I loved as much as it again.. but that was not the case with Latent Wolf!

Of the many things I loved about this book is how much it had so many different elements than what I was expecting for a werewolf fantasy. The world building was so well done and so unique.. and I definitely found myself dming the author when I found out about a certain plot twist!

From only the first chapter in.. I realized that Kemp was not holding back... which I very much appreciated. This book definitely had some darker elements.

One of the best things I also loved from Kemp's writing was the effortless way she created characters that capture your heart. The cast is quite large in Latent Wolf, but every character was unique and memorable. There is never a single character in the page that feels like a background character, because she writes every single character with such depth.

Kemp showcased her talent at entwinining action and adventure with exceptional pacing all which keept me turning the page and wanting more.

Latent Wolf was almost 400 pages and I desperately wanted more which makes me SO excited that the sequel is already out!

Do yourself a favor and pick up Latent Wolf and support this incredibly talented human!

I am obsessed with shifter books. Honestly I will read anything wolfish. And DAMN this did not disappoint at all!

Have we've read a story like this before? Sure. But that doesn't mean this one can't be different. Tobias is a 15 year old kid who is forced to live with his grandparents after the tragic death of his parents. Never having met them before, he is anxious the moment he walked through the door. His grandmother is nice enough, but his grandfather is rude and has dementia.

Tobias is a latent wolf. meaning he cannot shift. Much of his family history is a secret to him because his parents continually asked him to suppress that side of him. His only goal at his new school is to not be noticed. Unfortunately that does not work at well for he is spotted by Cody, son of the alpha of the local pack. Instantly, Cody tries to befriend Tobias.

Against his will, he tries to get along with Cody and his pack, but everyone reminds him that he does not belong and that he cannot shift. So he's inept anyway.

Little do they know that Tobias is a natural born alpha.

This book was soooo good! I'm hesitant to read some indie authors (and honestly tons of traditionally published authors as well) because the writing isn't always the best. But the writing in this book was phenomenal. The characters were so well written and the plot line was so flushed out. I read this book in two days because I just couldn't put it down!

The ending was just perfect, but left it quite open for book 2. Which I need now! I highly recommend this book to shifter lovers!

Entertaining read with a clever plot and engaging characters.

I really liked the voice and personality of Tobias Finch’s inner wolf, which provided some laughs throughout the story. Also liked Lucy Stone’s character - she’s sassy and confident.

The author really makes you feel like you are there with the characters in Wyoming and Montana.

I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series!

A fresh twist on the werewolf trope, you’ll find yourself rooting for the underdog, Tobias, a werewolf shifter who can’t, well, shift. A New Yorker who moves to a small town in Wyoming to live with his grandparents after his parents die, he is immediately hated by his fellow werewolves who belong to a different pack. He must conceal the secrets of his true identity in order to survive and try to fit in. All the while, he feels a strange, unexplainable attraction to a female werewolf who hates his guts. This book has humor, action and several unexpected twists.

I finished and oh my gosh I need book two!!

This book was so funny and had me thinking about it at all times! Tobis made a cozy spot in my heart where he continued to hurt me with the reminder of the death of his mother and the lose of his father!

I just wanted him to be loved! Things got crazy fast, I really loved the characters we were introduced to, Cody the most! I’m hoping he continues to be loyal!

I recommend you pick this up, really good read! It had me giggling and laughing! Some parts are so sad and you really get to feel the characters feelings.

Once again, not knowing what I'm walking into and NO regrets. I LOVE the way Elisha creates characters that make the reader fall head over heels for them. I loved the action-packed adventures that kept me wanting to read more. I listened to the audiobook and LOVED the pace of the book. I honestly couldn't stop. That's my favorite thing about a book like this. Listening to audio was amazing because I was so enraptured with the paranormal world of a werewolf fantasy.

It follows the story of Tobias, an underdog werewolf shifter who is still trying to figure out how to shift. He is a New Yorker who moves to a small town in Wyoming to live with his grandparents after the death of his parents. As he tries to settle into this small town, it's immediately known that he isn't welcome by the packs already residing in the town. ENTER DRAMA.

I highly recommend those who enjoy a good werewolf trope to read this! It has romance, humor, adventure, and drama - The most delicious ingredients for a good paranormal read.

Unexpected situations and characters draw you into this adventure story from the very first sentence.
"I cringe inwardly as I step off the bus . Buffalo, Wyoming is exactly as I had imagined." To tell more would be giving something away. I definitely recommend this exquisitely written book that will keep you up at night reading and/or worrying about what will happen next.

So well written, with engaging characters and action packed! It had me on the edge of my seat and I chewed it all up! A huge success for a debut author! As Elisha described the point of differentiation for this shifter book is the agency that drove change and self-evolution rather than external forces. Compelling and empowering storytelling! Really looking forward to the next one!

Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy to read and review!

This YA shifter book gave me all the Teen Wolf feels. I loved Tobias and he was a great male character to read from. He is 15 years old and known as what they call a born alpha. Born alphas are normally killed at birth because of how powerful they are. They are deemed too dangerous for packs. Tobias’s parents ran to keep him alive. But even though he is supposed to be so powerful, he finds that he is also Latent, unable to shift. I flew through this one and definitely a 5 star read for me.

I was intrigued with the world and characters. Lucy was kind of off the wall for me but I understand some what. She definitely grew more on you but I still found myself not loving her. I loved Tobias and felt so bad for him the entire time. I can’t wait to see where the story goes.

If you like shifter novels you will want to pick this one up! A page turner and coming of age story.

I like shifter books. Honestly I will read anything with wolfs/werewolves in it .

Elisha Kemp, is a new author for me and this book was on my TBR for a while!
Wish I did read this book sooner, because it was an entertaining read, with a clever and original plot and engaging characters. The fact that it was a YA didn't bother me at all, and that is not always the case.

Tobias is a 15 year old kid who is forced to live with his grandparents after the tragic death of his parents. Never having met them before, he is anxious the moment he walked through the door.
His grandmother is nice enough, but his grandfather is rude and has dementia.

Against his will, he tries to get along with Cody and his pack, but everyone reminds him that he does not belong and that he cannot shift. So he's inept anyway.

Little do they know that Tobias is a natural born alpha.

This book really good! I have read it in one day and bought the second in this serie right away.
I'm hesitant to read some new for me (indie) authors because the writing isn't always the best.
But the writing in this book was phenomenal. The characters were so well written and the plot line was so flushed out.

I highly recommend this book to shifter lovers!

I read about half of this book, and finally decided (having already put it aside once before) that it just wasn't holding my interest. Not that Kemp's writing is poor; it is somewhat repetitious, but it does have its own style and there's enough of a pull to keep you reading overall.
But I just lost belief in the story: it was already more than enough that so many people in the place to which Tobias goes are people who 'shift' into being wolves. In fact, they're really wolves at heart, it appears. For a while every second character Tobias met was one of the pack, or else came from a different pack, and were in danger as a result, as Tobias mostly was. There's a lot of other background to the pack order, and what it means to be a latent wolf (I'm not quite sure I understood this bit), and who's alpha and what happens when you meet (or lose) your life mate -normally another human/wolf, but not necessarily.
But when another character who turns up proves to be a human/bear, and started talking other humans who'd gone missing who were also various other animals, I felt enough was enough. Was there anybody in this book's world who was actually plain and simply human?
I'm guessing from the other reviews that this wolf-shifting thing is a genre that I'm not familiar with, and obviously Kemp's book, and the two that follow it, work well within this genre. Just not quite for me...

This was a really entertaining read. I love it when there are crime/ thriller aspects in fantasy books, so I loved following Tobias while he was finding out more and more about who his parents‘ killer was.
That was basically the main plot of this book. But I also really enjoyed reading about a shifter (basically a werewolf) who can’t turn into a wolf. The trope makes for a really good „trying to find ones place in the world“ story if it is executed well. And I thought it was done really well. Tobias as a character is really three dimensional and you instantly want to know more about him and are immediately on his side. The side characters were also written really well. I liked that they all had their own personality and their own motivations. It’s really annoying when the side characters just blindly follow the main character just for the sake of the plot. So I liked that they all had their own reasons for going with Tobias.
After reading this book and getting a few answers, I definitely want to keep reading to find out everything that hasn’t been revealed yet. This story really keeps you wanting to read more.

"A Gripping Start to an Exciting New Series!"

Latent Wolf marks an exhilarating beginning to the Tobias Finch series. From the very first page, the reader is thrown into a richly detailed world brimming with suspense, intrigue, and unforgettable characters. Tobias Finch, as the protagonist, is both relatable and compelling, making it easy for readers to root for him.

The story masterfully intertwines elements of mystery, action, and supernatural intrigue, creating a narrative that is impossible to put down. The plot is well-paced, with each twist and turn expertly crafted to keep readers on the edge of their seats.

As an author, I am particularly impressed by the depth and development of the characters and the meticulous world-building. This book not only showcases the author's talent but also promises a thrilling journey ahead in the subsequent installments of the series.

For anyone looking for a novel that combines gripping storytelling with well-rounded characters and a hint of the supernatural, Latent Wolf is a must-read. I highly recommend it and look forward to the next adventure in the Tobias Finch series.
