Chef Wyatt Blake is finally ready to move on from his thankless job. He gets no wiggle room, zero praise, plenty of abuse, and on a good day, he might only spend twelve hours in the Terroir kitchens. A friend of his recommends a private chef position, but despite the boost in pay, Wyatt doesn’t want to babysit some spoiled, rich LA family.

Imagine his shock when the family isn't a Kardashian clone, but Ryan Flores, the only professional baseball player to ever come out of the closet.

Ryan is also at a career crossroads. His team’s management wants to see his more responsible side, which means no more late night hookups and no more adrenaline-charged stunts. When his agent suggests he find a fake boyfriend to give him an air of domesticity, he’s only reluctantly interested.

Until Ryan goes to a local bar and spies the cute private chef he’s supposed to be interviewing the next day. Maybe a quieter life wouldn’t be so bad, as long as Wyatt is part of it?

Wyatt believes Ryan could be more than just a crappy boss, but he isn't sure about leaving the kitchen for the life of a professional boyfriend. Especially when he wants the reality so much more than the fantasy.

Catch Me is a 85,000 contemporary m/m romance, and while second in the Kitchen Gods series, can be read as a standalone.

I had a really hard time with this book, but I seem to be in the minority here. Huh.

Almost from the start, I did not buy the set up to the story. Yeah, yeah, I know that this is fiction, but the whole convoluted plot of the baseball player needing a fake boyfriend and hooking up with a random guy at a club who he was really stalking as a fake-boyfriend candidate and then hiring him as a chef... I mean, really.

I'm also not a fan of the speed of the relationship. It felt insta-lovey to me, which I really despise. I found it also really irritating that they simply didn't communicate their feelings at all, instead letting things build and get out of hand. It wasn't my type of plot or storyline.

I didn't hate the book, but I found it to be quite boring, which coupled with the way I felt about the set up and writing style, made it hard for me to read. I only got to 50% before I quit. Maybe this author just isn't for me.

I loved this one even more than book one in the series as its way less angsty and has more of a gentleness to the romance even with all the heat!

Also, it's a sports romance and they have a special place in my heart because I live for the day when someone's sexuality has no bearing on their ability to be a great athlete.

Beth also snuck in a couple more potential new subjects for future books as I'm hoping that Chef Bastard and Kian will be next but then there's still Xander and now I want Wyatt's brother Tony's story too!

Fake boyfriends is also another favourite trope and this one's a doozy as both men fall head over heels but don't want the other to know in case it messes up the agreement to pretend.

Seriously hot, there's plenty of chemistry between the two but it takes a dramatic moment to pull their heads out of their backsides.

I also thought the B plot with Wyatt's Nana's Alzheimer's was handled well too, although I am left with questions as to what happened with their other brother, who sort of vanished out of the narrative!

Overall, a great second book in this series.

I usually don't read series out of order, but I started the food truck series & read Wyatt's brothers book and I really just wanted to go back and read Wyatt's book. The premise of private chef & celebrity sounded really good to me, but this just didn't really hit like I was hoping to. The forced proximity of being a live in private chef wasn't a big part of the plot. And the random fake dating thrown in was only OK. I don't think I'll read anymore of this series, but I am excited to get back to the food truck series.

I’m not going to lie, reading the synopsis for this book that included the words gay and out professional baseball player had me raising my hand to read and review. I love the sport of baseball and while at times baseball romances can be hit or miss with me, this book intrigued me. Catch Me was a delightful story between two men both with a bit of baggage and lacking in communication skills, but it was easy to feel the chemistry between them and fun watching them both try and deny the emotions growing between them each and every day.

To say that Ryan Flores made a bit of a tactical error when he meets Wyatt Blake for the first time is putting it mildly and despite his growing celebrity as an out and proud short stop for the Los Angeles Dodgers he is basically a private person, but he wants a new contract with his club and changing his image is something his agent believe he must do in order to get it. What Ryan doesn’t expect is to get along so well with the man he has hired as his personal chef and hopefully to play his pretend boyfriend.

I’ll admit that I don’t really enjoy it when people use half truths to get what they want and so I wasn’t enamored with Ryan from the start. I felt bad for Wyatt because he needed a job that paid better for a very good reason and despite the fact that he had reason not to trust Ryan, he took the job. The attraction between these two was tantalizing and fun to watch, but I was disappointed that neither man was completely honest for a good part of this book. I did enjoy this book and the fact that both men were falling for each other from the start even when they didn’t realize it or want to admit it kept my interest and helped me to fall in love with the characters.

A hot baseball player and a sexy chef cook up all kinds of heat all while falling in love in Beth Bolden’s Catch Me.

I loved this one, it’s the second in the series. A stand alone just like the first one.

It has an wonderful vibe in it. Just the right tension and depth. Both main personalities were mature, considerate and adorable.

Wyatt is a Chef and gets the opportunity to be a personal Chef for a sportsman. It will pay well and he needs the money.
Ryan will hire a personal chef and will try to convince him to be his fake boyfriend, it will be good for his status as gay baseball player.
Wyatt is shocked when he sees his future employer for the first time because it isn’t really the first time and Ryan isn’t quite honest.
It’s all getting complicated when real feelings are getting involved with fake ones.

There was just enough complications to feel the stress, the awkwardness and tension.
All the dialogue made good sense. The cooking was such a great addition again.
The family and friends who surrounded them had a good part in this story.
It’s written in a captivating way. I loved the whole package.

Kindly received an arc from the author

I haven’t been this disappointed in a long time. I loved the first 75% of the book. Great relationship development and stupid miscommunications, sure, but nothing crazy.

But I don’t think Bolden could’ve torpedoed my enjoyment of the climax more if she tried. What a letdown. There was no coming back from Ryan’s behavior. Not at the club. And not in that car.

Fuck him. He’s a manchild.

I should go down to 2 stars, that’s how much I don’t forgive him. I LOVE angst in my romance books. And I adore angst within the relationship itself, so it’s not that. It was the specific acts she chose to have Ryan commit.

You know what? Fuck it. I’m going down to 2 stars because I’m that pissed. It was awful and then just swept under the rug like it was all a minor inconvenience.

I love Beth Bolden but I did not love this book. I do love Beth's Riptide/Piranhas books and I don't want to read Winning the Season yet because I'm not ready to not have it to look forward to (I know it sounds stupid. What can I say. I'm still holding on to Double Play, Show Me Wonders, Ruthless, Book of Night, and House of freakin Sky and Breath for the same reason) so I'm basically reading any other book that has a tangential relation to anyone in the Piranhas/Riptide books.

Anyway, fake boyfriend, not my thing. This book, also not my thing. I hate to say it but the writing was kind of cliche and the way the characters so easily forgave and forgot each other's transgressions made it seem like they didn't care all that much to begin with? Idk. I guess I prefer either all angst, all the time or pure fluff, not this mild sort of self-inflicted angst due to Lack Of Communication, etc.

Or maybe I'm just in the wrong headspace for this rn, idk.

My reviews follow a pretty set pattern. A little background on characters, current issues, what I liked (or didn't). This one is different. Fake boyfriends isn't my favorite trope. But this one worked. Probably because even though it was supposed to be fake, Wyatt and Ryan were already on their way to love.

Ryan is an out baseball player. And he is a player. To stay with the team and city he likes, it has been decided he needs a steady man in his life. Wyatt is a chef, mostly in the closet, needing to leave the job he is in. He applied to be a personal chef. He didn't know the amazing man he met the night before will be his new boss.

Since Wyatt isn't out, being Ryan's fake boyfriend won't work for him. Mistakes, miscues, and interference from one of Ryan's exes set the stage for heartache. They tie themselves in knots trying to make things work.

I liked the characters, they just worked together. This is part of a series, I haven't read the first book and don't feel like I needed it to enjoy this one.

Okay, I had a hard time getting into the story because the setting was... not very credible. And this was said by someone who loves the fake-relationship trope.

I liked the style of the writer, and her characters were well delineated, although the story slides to melodrama by the end. Nevertheless, it's entertained and, by moments, very sweet.

And just as a note, I hate the cover.

Wyatt Baker does a good job narrating.

I tried, I did, but I just couldn't get over the MCs absolute stupidity and self inflicted drama. I'm usually a huge fan of the fake dating trope but in this case it just felt too contrived. Halfway through the book I honestly couldn't continue since both Ryan and Wyatt were just getting on my nerves so I ended up skimming the last half out of curiosity and a need to somewhat see the book through.

First thing I’ll say, or rather ask is, how did I miss the release of book one in this series?! I must have had my head buried in the sand, but having not read book one, something I’ll be rectifying as soon as possible, I can say, this book definitely works as a standalone. Although the couple from book one makes an appearance, I never once felt lost for having not read their story.

This was an interesting story. I love the fake boyfriend trope, and Wyatt and Ryan did fake so well, until it wasn’t fake anymore that is. I really loved Ryan and Wyatt, they were both likable guys that you could really root for, although, at times, I wanted to knock their heads together. Wyatt was much better than Ryan though, I honestly wasn’t sure Ryan would ever pull his head out of his butt and get it together, but alas, he finally managed to see the light.

The story was well-written and Ryan and Wyatt had amazing chemistry and they sizzled in bed, but I will say, I wouldn’t have minded another sex scene or two in the second half of the story(that’s just my preference). I loved the secondary characters, as well, well, most of them, Eric, Ryan’s agent, was a complete twat most of the time, but I’m definitely looking forward to getting to know Wyatt’s friends/co-workers from Terroir, as well as his brother Tony, who I really hope Ms. Bolden gives a book. I’m also looking forward to catching up with Ryan and Wyatt in future installments in this series. This was very enjoyable and definitely recommendable!

This was a really good book. I'm glad it could be read as a standalone, so I didn't miss really anything. There was some definite angst going on in this one. Brings a few tears to the eyes. But so worth it.

Wyatt has had enough. He's in a job he hates because he's supposed to be a chef, but the boss of the place he works at, is a major ass. Trying to shake of the melancholy of life, Wyatt heads to a bar to maybe find a fling for the night. Maybe not. What he didn't expect was to sit and stare at baseball’s out and proud gay man, Ryan Flores. He knows he will never have a shot with a man like that, but it's nice to dream. Being fed up with it all, he leaves the bar to get some sleep for his interview tomorrow. What he doesn't know is that Ryan has been watching him too, and followed him out of the bar. What passes for a hot sexual experience happens and they go their separate ways. Which wakes Wyatt up in a bad mood. He goes to his interview, and lo and behold, it's Ryan. Wyatt is pissed but he needs the money from this job, so he stays quiet. Ryan hires him as his private chef. Wyatt soon finds out, though, that's not all Ryan wants. After a few more sexual encounters, Wyatt is getting attached. But Ryan just wants him for a fake boyfriend to appease the managers of his team into signing him for more seasons. Wyatt says no but for many reasons. He stays on as chef and tensions are high. The more they're together, the more they are 'together’. Now it's just a matter of whether they both can get over bad pasts and hurts and make this real or let hearts be broken and move on.

I think if I was in Wyatt's shoes, I wouldn't know whether to jump in with both feet or smack the crap out of Ryan. When feelings start getting involved, pretending at anything usually ends up bad. And with both having past bad relationships, that just sets it up for worse. I have to hand it to Wyatt, though. He keeps trying. He keeps trying to get the real deal, no matter how much Ryan screws it up. And I hate that it took something drastic to get Ryan to pull his head out of his ass. Relationships are never easy. They take a crapload of work. But both have to be willing to be in it for 100% or it don't work at all. And Ryan was torn. Most times he was running scared, and then he'd turn around and be all sweet. When you ride the fence, nothing happens. Actually the other party gets tired of it and leaves. So it was rocky. But persistence pays off. Just don't let something drastic have to happen to get through.

Good good book. I'm intrigued by other characters in this book as well. I loved Ryan's best friend. She didn't take any crap and told Ryan how it should be quite often lol. But the other two that intrigued me were Wyatt's friends. Kian and Xander. Xander I wanted to smack most times, but Kian…. There's something about him. This is a good series. I need to go back and read book one, but from what I've read it's going to get even better hopefully. Happy reading!

if my adrenaline junkie boyfriend got all pissy bc i was being a little annoying after a really vulnerable + angry convo, accelerated until we were driving 100 mph after i said he was reckless driving, and then fucking CRASHED??? breaking my arm and giving me a concussion???? ohhhhhh i would have made him MISERABLE for the next ten YEARS. are u fucking kidding me. wyatts a goddamn SAINT bc i hold grudges easier than i breathe. ryan would have been CRUCIFIED. STRUNG BY HIS GODDAMN TOES. he needed to feel like shit for so much longer than he did. but that's just me tbh.

this was honestly really good. like i think it truly fell apart in the last 10-15% when the conflict reared its head, especially bc i think it was so avoidable and honestly im surprised we even had it. but whatever. outside of that it was so enjoyable like they were fun. honestly this book tasted like a fish taco, with white onions and a little lime really refreshing (and fitting bc they literally had tacos at some point). if it werent for that shitty conflict. also ALL that talk abt how eric sucks and he doesn't even get fired?? come on now 😭

gosh. im still not over that car crash like.

I rate this book a 4.5 stars

I really loved the blurb to this book when I first saw it. So, when I got my arc I was very excited. However, going into his book I was a bit nervous. I don't particularly like fake relationship books. I'm all about that Romance.

That being said, I really enjoyed this book. I was up until 4AM reading because I just couldn't stop. This is the best fake relationship book I've ever read.

I never really got bored, and I loved the plot. There were plenty of sexy times and not really much unnecessary information.

There was one BIG mistake towards the end that I was very unhappy about. But, that's just my romantic side coming out. I thought it was really vital to the story so, while I'm not happy with the choice he made, I understand.

I have not read book one to this series. And I didnt really feel like I was missing any information. So, I don't think it's necessary to have read the first book to completely enjoy this one. However, I will be reading it, soon.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

Wyatt Blake works at top restaurant Terrior as a Line Chef where he's bored and he desperately needs more money to pay for his Nanas care. He gets his big break after getting a job as a personal chef to a Professional Baseball player in L.A. The move means leaving behind his Nana and friends Xander and Kian.
According to openly gay professional baseball player Ryan Flores agent Eric, he needs a fake boyfriend and a personal chef. His sexy new chef who he happened to have met the night before, could also be be his fake boyfriend.
Wyatt accepts and signs to be Ryan's fake boyfriend but with true feelings coming through will Wyatt finally come out to his family and will they become a real couple?

I really enjoyed Wyatt and Ryan's story and catching up with Miles and Evan from book 1. I'm looking forward to Kian's story which is hopefully next but saying that I'd like Xanders and now Tonys story too! I thought Beth Bolden handled the Alzheimer's part of the story really well.

This clicked with me so much more than book one (which I still enjoyed but was just a bit lacking). The dynamic between the characters was much more my tastes. The fake relationship trope is turned on it's head a bit, I love the twist of having Wyatt refuse to go along with it until he decided to use it to "catch" Ryan. I could've really done without the big even that happens towards the end. I think the set for conflict was already enough without the big drama. It felt shoehorned in. I really loved the supporting characters, they were sprinkled in just enough. I don't mind that the culinary aspect (there is still some nice chunks) was kind of focused on less. I like the focus on the relationship and the characters. So all in all, I really really liked this story. I was more invested in the romance and the characters themselves. I'm totally looking forward to the rest of the series.

MAKES YOU HUNGRY FOR MORE!!!

What a fantastic, surprising, compelling cast of characters. Who knew that chefs and cooking, could be sooo sexy. Wyatt is an amazing chef, gorgeous, laid back personality and very under paid. When an opportunity becomes available to make more money, which is desperately needed to care for his Nana, he takes the job. Ryan is the first out and proud, major league baseball player. He needs to present himself as settling down into a committed relationship. His manager concocted a scheme of a fake boyfriend, until his new contract is signed. Wyatt and Ryan are a fantastic contradiction, in personality, temperament and goals. But what they do have in common are difficult pasts, love of family, sense of humor, willingness to try new things. This relationship was intense, passionate, full of longing and misunderstanding. This is a magnificent story that you can't put down. This is book #2 but can easily be read as a standalone. I also loved book #1 BITE ME. I am now hungrily waiting for book #3. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND THIS MAGNIFICENT NEW SERIES!!!!!

I enjoyed this one quite a bit more than the first and I thought it was an interesting spin on fake dating given that Wyatt . There was more than enough miscommunication/not talking about their feelings though for the to be completely unnecessary and, while the epilogue was fun, I wanted to see more of them actually in the relationship. 3.5 stars

Fake dating is one of my favourite tropes, but this one didn't quite work for me, and I think it largely comes down to Ryan and how I want to like him but from the evidence in the book have a hard time thinking he'd be a good person for Wyatt to be in a relationship with. (I am also risk averse, so it's probably partly a case of just not clicking with the type of person he is, but below the spoiler brackets are specific instances where I really have trouble with his decisions, and it just goes on throughout the entire book.)

So ... what am I taking away from this? Ryan is a thrill-chasing adrenaline junkie who is happy to manipulate to get what he wants, rarely explains himself, and doesn't listen to his partner. I believe that Wyatt is all in and loves Ryan. (Though it is difficult to see why, really, as a reader in Wyatt's POV, I believe it nevertheless.) It's a lot harder for me to get on board with Ryan's supposed feelings versus his actions. All of these dark spots through so much of the book mostly drowned out the parts that I enjoyed--and I genuinely enjoyed Ryan supporting Wyatt through the first bad instance of his Nan's memory loss, the cooking lesson with Flor, meeting Tony, the apology food truck. (Really, that last one is pretty inspired, thinking of a way that Wyatt can achieve his goals and connect with his family.) I'm left hoping that the near death experience is finally enough to alter some of Ryan's behaviour (which seems to be the case given the epilogue) but I wish that I'd seen more instances of positive behaviour in the book itself.

I love me a fake boyfriend story and although not the best I’ve read it was enjoyable.

Ryan and Wyatt get into things pretty quick, Wyatt is just down for a one time thing but Ryan has ulterior motives. This didn’t sit with me very well, there was a lot of manipulation going on at the start and I did feel sorry for Wyatt.

I did like the way the story developed however and we saw how these guys were falling in love with each other albeit without saying anything to one another. I did find their relationship believable despite the rocky start.

Note: As this is Book 2 in the Kitchen Gods series, it does contain spoilers for Book 1. It can be read as a stand-alone, although there is a bit of background set in the first book.

Wyatt Blake needs to move on. His job is driving him to the edge, he has no time to himself and he needs money to take care of family commitments. He heads to LA for an interview for a much better paying private chef gig. He’s not excited about cooking for the spoiled rich. Wyatt has no idea that the client is the guy he hooks up with his first night out in LA before his interview. And that means it turns out the client is the first out professional baseball player, Ryan Flores. However, the job isn’t just about cooking. Ryan asks Wyatt to be his fake boyfriend as well. Seems management isn’t so excited about Ryan’s reckless adrenaline junkie streak and Eric, Ryan’s manager, thinks if he appears more “settled” it’ll get the Dodgers management off his back and extend his contract hopefully.

But Wyatt can’t accept the position – well not as a fake boyfriend. He’s not out to his family and he doesn’t want them to find out that he’s gay. Ryan understands, but he’s really disappointed – because despite his best efforts, he really does like Wyatt. They have fun together – riding motorcycles, surfing, hanging out. Ryan doesn’t really want to do this fake boyfriend thing either, but he doesn’t want to leave LA.

Ryan and Wyatt seem to keep getting closer though. Ryan introduces Wyatt to his family even. They continue to enjoy each other’s company and the sexual tension is always simmering just beneath the surface. But when Ryan resolves to find someone else as a fake boyfriend, well Wyatt isn’t ready to accept that at all. But just when it looks like things might turn around for them, things seem to get offtrack again. Ryan and Wyatt keep second guessing each other and their relationship and things seem to go from bad to worse. When a crisis hits though, it seems like they are forced to face facts – that they belong together.

I really have enjoyed this series. I read the first book right when it came out. I thought I’d try the audio for this one. I liked the story and both Ryan and Wyatt as characters, but the narration was just OK. At times the pacing and voices were just off for me. Wyatt Baker is a new to me narrator, so I took a little bit to get use to his voice characterizations and pronunciations. I also really liked the secondary characters in this one – especially Wyatt’s and Ryan’s families and friends, including Ryan’s best friend Tabitha who is a character from another of Bolden’s series. It was also nice to look in on Miles and Evan from book 1. I’m anxious to get to the next book which will feature another former Terroir co-worker of both Wyatt and Miles from the first book.

3.5 stars. Sweet romance between adrenaline junky & pro baseballer, Ryan Flores, and nana's-boy chef, Wyatt Blake. M/M explicit.

Wyatt Blake has a lot on his shoulders. He's supporting his beloved nana, who is slowly losing her memory. He's left his high profile job to work as a private chef in order to pay for his nana's care. And he's just realised that the celebrity who gave him a seriously hot blow job last night is going to be his employer. And they'll be living together.

Ryan Flores needs to change his image. The only pro-baseballer to be 'out', he's facing a lot of heat for being a party boy and may just lost his contract over it. The (apparent) only solution? A fake boyfriend. And thankfully, Ryan knows the perfect guy for the job - his hot new personal chef.

But Wyatt isn't out. And even if he were, things feel far too real for him to want to 'fake' anything. But can Ryan even have a real relationship?

Wow was there a lot going on here. The characters of Wyatt and Ryan were really well fleshed out, and helped to create a solid story where normally I wouldn't have been especially interested. I liked how they both needed to recognise and address their own hang ups before the relationship could progress - it added a character arc that is usually missing from these sorts of romance books. I actually think Beth Bolden could have pushed it further still (Wyatt is a bit of a martyr and Ryan's selfishness causes some big problems) but just having it in there was a nice change.

This was my first book by Beth Bolden, and I did feel a bit left in the dark every now and again when we met characters who were clearly protagonists in previous books, but it wasn't too bad all things considered. My main complaint would probably be that every so often Beth would include a really odd phrase that would take a while for me to parse. Maybe it would include a few double negatives, or just something completely strange, like this one:

Wyatt piled a handful of watermelons into the cart (64%)

How can you have a handful of watermelons?? I actually had to stop at this point and question the whole thing with my husband :P

My other complaint is that for a story about a baseballer and a chef, I felt like there was a distinct lack of baseball (in fact there was none whatsoever), and the cooking wasn't a massive part either. This didn't bother me much, but I can imagine someone coming into the book expecting a bit of a sports angle would probably be disappointed.

Otherwise I enjoyed it, and will read the rest of the books in the series (and probably start on Beth Bolden's other romances as well).

“Life is about deciding what matters. It's about the fantasy that determines the reality.” ~ Claire Messud

Wyatt, of ‘Catch Me by Beth Bolden, will miss his friend, roommate, and coworker Miles but is happy he has not only “escaped” his position at Terroir, a place where he felt frustrated and stunted, but that he has a new TV show as well. While there, the studio’s owner suggests that if Wyatt wants to move on from Terroir, he can help him find a position in the area. Wyatt says he will consider it. Later, Wyatt receives an offer for a private chef position; so he heads back to Los Angeles for an interview.

The night before, Wyatt is sitting in a bar when he spies Ryan Flores, shortstop for the LA Dodgers and the first man in baseball to come out as gay. Wyatt has no illusions about grabbing Ryan’s attention, but he can’t keep his eyes off the man. When Ryan suddenly leaves, Wyatt follows him, but he didn’t expect to see Ryan outside waiting for him! Ryan had noticed him staring, and it intrigued him. Wyatt can hardly believe Ryan wants to talk to him, much less that he asks Wyatt if he will take him home. On the way, they take a detour where they have a sexual encounter that blows both of their minds. It’s not something Wyatt would typically do, but it’s Ryan Flores! How could he refuse to go with the man he had been staring at for three hours?

The following day, Wyatt goes to his interview. He is anxious because he didn’t get enough sleep. When his client walks in, Wyatt almost loses it. The man who is going to interview him for the position is Ryan Flores. Ryan shakes his hand, pretending not to know him. Wyatt is grateful, but still flustered. Since Ryan didn’t look surprised that Wyatt was the man he was to interview, it could only mean one thing. Ryan knew who Wyatt was beforehand. Wyatt isn’t sure how he feels about that.

Ryan isn’t only looking for a chef when he hires Wyatt. Lately, the Dodgers manager has complained about Ryan’s “wild ways” and making his manager nervous. Hiring Wyatt as his personal chef and “fake” boyfriend helps make Ryan seem more settled. However, while Ryan wants to further their intimate relationship, he isn’t ready to tell Wyatt about it. Working for Ryan is better than Wyatt could have imagined. Their compatibility is exceptional in and out of bed. It delights Wyatt to be Ryan’s lover in the secrecy of his home, but when Ryan admits he needs a “fake” boyfriend that he can share with the world, it devastates Wyatt. As much as he would like to, he can’t because he is not out to his family.

Wyatt and Ryan had great chemistry. I felt sorry for Wyatt for feeling like he had to lie to his family, but I loved his relationship with his nana. There were times I could have smacked Ryan for his insensitivity and thick-headedness, but there were other times when I admired him for his character growth and willingness to adapt. Thanks, Beth, for another hit out of the ballpark. I look forward to the next story in the series.

So I have been reading the little there is out there in terms of baseball and m/m romance while waiting for the season to start. I started with Force Play (3 starts), then moved on to Out in the Field (2 stars). My luck isn't getting any better b/c this one is a single star.

The good - the author has the player involved with someone who is not a teammate, or even another active player. The author also portrays the player as already "out" in professional baseball, which is quite cool. (I'm waiting for the day ....)

The bad - I KNOW it's fiction, but this story was published recently (in 2018) and it implies that the Dodgers have a homophobic GM. In actuality, the Dodgers have an openly gay VP (the first openly gay MLB exec) and the organization is very active in LGBTQ equality - there is an LGBTQ day and yes, they make sure to employ the kiss cam on that day. I understand the idea of wanting to use a real team for more impact, but using the Dodgers of all teams was a real misstep to me.

The ugly - while it's good that the romance is between a player and someone outside of baseball, the way the plot is engineered to bring the two together is ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH awful. One - the implication that the only way a team would keep a gay player is if they were a "good gay" - which is apparently someone who is in a monogamous relationship. Again, I know it's fiction and this is a way to demonstrate the prejudice in sport, but it just felt extra insulting somehow. Second - in order to work within this scenario, the player is convinced by their agent to create a fake relationship. Oh Lord God. This is straight out of the 1950's soap opera plot book. Third - what the hell is with the concept that the gay player won't have a monogamous or even meaningful relationship b/c he doesn't want to get BORED? Really? If that's what drives this guy, then hey, he's a class A jerk to begin with.

I could find very little to like about this book, unfortunately.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story about fake boyfriends with a twist. It is fun and lighthearted, sexy and sweet. The story grabbed me from the first page till the last, and I kept turning the pages.
The author gave this fake-boyfriend story a surprising twist. Wyatt and Ryan hook up at a club, but later they meet again when Ryan hires Wyatt to be his personal chef. Not that he really needs one, but he just can’t resist Wyatt. A complicating factor is that he does need a fake boyfriend to get him another contract as pro baseball player. Management is okay with him being out but wants to see him in a steady relationship. He asks Wyatt to be his fake boyfriend, but Wyatt is not out, so a real friendship it is.
I loved both men. Wyatt and Ryan are definitely cut out for each other. The chemistry is tangible. They can both agree on friendship alone, but they can’t deny the electricity between them. They keep dancing around each other, and more often than not the lines between fake and real are crossed. And every time I wanted to hit them on the head to get their acts together. They are just meant to be each other, but they are too stubborn to see. Just as I thought they finally see the light, they keep on doing something stupid. Oh, I could strangle them. That is what it is all about, really. That I am so engrossed in their lives that I keep yelling at them as if they are real.
A bittersweet sub-plot is Wyatt’s Nana, who has Alzheimer’s. I loved how Wyatt does everything to give her the best care possible, and then cried when she doesn’t recognize him. How devastating that must be.
Ryan might be a professional baseball player, but don’t expect on-page matches, because there aren’t any. What there is, though, are many enticing and mouthwatering food made by Wyatt and Ryan’s aunt, Flor.
Wyatt’s roommates are making their appearance in this book again and Miles and Evan from the first book. There are several hints for upcoming books. I can’t wait to read them.
This is the second book in the Kitchen Gods series and can be read as a stand-alone.
