Soulbound Shifters #2

As Darkness Falls

Rate this book
I should be free. Of him. Of everyone.

But I’m not. I’m still here. I’m still Soulbound. Just not to my ex. Now I’m bound to an ancient shifter god. He’s all I could want in a man. If I’d been allowed to choose him.

That’s not the only change however. I’m stronger. Faster. The others, they look to me for answers. I wish I had them. I’m making everything up as I go along, and I’m not sure what scares me more, the idea I might screw up, or the bigger question, the one that keeps me up at night.

What am I?

But among all the questions, I’ve learned something. The Alpha of my pack is majorly pissed at me. He still thinks he can control me. Only this time he’s going to try and do it by threatening the last person I have left from my old life.

It’s going to be his last mistake.

Riley is one of those early-morning people you love to hate, because she swears she doesn't need caffeine, even though the coffee-maker is connected to her smartphone. She lives in a three-story townhouse by the good graces of a tabby-cat who rules the house, the couch, the table, well, basically everywhere. When she's not groveling for forgiveness for neglecting to pet her kitty enough, Riley is strapped in to her writing chair coming up with crazy worlds where she can make her own decisions of when feeding time is and how much coffee can be drank without her friends--of which she has three--holding yet another intervention that they threaten to post on the internet.

Sluggish

World build:
Simple and easy to follow. Stays true to book 1.

Storyline:
Slow moving. This storyline instead of evolving into newer and bigger events we are just dragging along with the same storyline from book 2. There is not enough happening here.

FMC:
Dani has all the ingredients to be an extremely strong FMC but her childish petty ways kill the character for me. She is her own worse enemy. At times Dani is just hard for me to read in this book.

MC:
Vir to be a god he is not that awe inspiring or fear inspiring. There is not a point in book 2 where I have the overwhelming feeling of a kick ass alpha.

I will probably continue to book 3, but I am in no rush.

Happy reading,
DD💕

I tried to like this series

So like I said I tried . But the main character can only be described as a flibbertigibbet. The author tries to make her come across as strong and forceful but she is just massively annoying. Her first book talks about all the harm her mate as a bad boyfriend does but its doesn't flow much less make sense. He main character demands and apparently gets the weak backup characters to charge a
head with bad decisions. I just can't suspend disbelief long enough to not want to throw this book or characters across the room. That's the truth, sorry author.

Dani is just unlikeable! A few spoilers.

A 21 year old child playing at being an adult. She was mildly annoying in the 1st book, but she gets worse in this one. She bosses around 2 men that are millenia old. And they let her, which makes no sense. A god following her "orders"? Nothing within the writing justifies why any grown man would listen to her! "Am I clear?" is one of her favorites phrases after delivering her bratty orders. She even offers up someone else's gold! She doesn't ever bother to ask anything, just demands. As if she's entitled. Another thing that doesn't make sense? Lars kidnaps Dani's best friend for leverage against her,yet later uses her parents. Why kidnap Jo if he could have just used her parents first? And she accepts that he has them without ANY proof they're still alive? Ridiculous. Then she's off to ordering the men around again. And again they let her. There is really no reason they are that submissive to her. Trying to finish this book, but I really don't like her at 80 percent and I don't see that changing. Lastly, I HATE when authors use the wrong character's name and have trouble with continuity. Won't be reading this author or anymore of her obnoxiously rude characters.

2.5 - 3 stars

This book continues on from the first book. I really had high hopes for this book too but there are a number of things that annoyed me like with the first book.

It was written in one POV only and that stilted the story as far as I am concerned. There was some humour with lots of sarcasm but some of it will just go over some heads.

There are lots of characters to hate and lots to like. The main Female lead is a pain in the arse most of the time and I wanted her to grow up in her expectations of others. I finished because I wanted to see how it ended and will read the others for the same reason.

There is a lot of flirting but nothing sexy in this story which is something I have come to love in Riley's stories.

Poorly written, bad lead female

First, Dani is a very annoying female lead, so tired of characters like this one. Second, the author had many mistakes in the book, using the wrong names, spelling errors on every page, whole sentences fractured. The story itself, has potential if told by a better author with writing skills. I got to 13% and wanted to stop. This is definitely a lost cause.

This book has adventure a tiny bit of adventure. I do wish that Dani came though as a person that was becoming sure of herself. Dani is soul bound to Vir. What will she do? She had Vir break the soul bound to Jonathan. What will happen to Jonathan? What are the feelings she is having for Aaron? Who is Aaron and his team, really? Can they do the things they need to? Will she ever figure out who her real parents are? Can she forgive her adopted parents?

Lars kidnapped Dani’s parents 8 months before she stole the idol from him. What was his motive 8 months ago? Now he’s demanding the return of the idol before he releases her parents. The two seem unrelated. It’s hard to believe that his son doesn’t know where Dani’s parents are hidden since he’d been totally under his father’s influence.

Dani makes an unnecessary detour to visit Jo’s father and let him know she is on a mission to rescue her, yet there’s no mention of anyone contacting him after she’s retrieved.

I’m pretty meh about Dani in this story. Anybody else seems to be better suited to being in charge. It’s hard to believe that Aaron would consent to do some of the stupid things she asks of him just because she’s hired him. Give the money back and go your separate ways. What kind of debt did Aaron owe Hades? That might be nice to know.

I’ve ordered the next book since I’ve gone this far and am mildly interested to see how it all pans out.

So here we have book two in the soulbound shifters series and I am still up in the air with it. So I don't really care for that fact that Dani is constantly complaining about her soul bond. So as you know she severed the soul bond with Johnathon only to get bonded to a god. I mean seriously, she does not want to be loved? I get that she wants to choose her love and she was all for it until the soul bond magic appeared. Now she has to figure out how to sever this bond again. While doing that she has to go and rescue her friend from her crazy alpha. Now some crazy things have been happening to Dani since she met Vir. She is stronger and has magic. There is a lot of action in this book as well. She has to figure out how to save her parents now and bring some relic back to her alpha to do it. Only who she gave the relic to does not have it. So how is this going to work? Well she has the bright idea to steal it only she finds out that Hades has it. So how will all this play out. Still during this whole thing she is still complaining about the bond. GRR. I don't get her.

Ok. So. About halfway through and I'm already skimming because this book can't hold my attention, the interactions and plot points are actually starting to annoy me. Literally no one realizes both times she touched the barrier and went through she did so bloody yet I saw it the first time she went through. She makes terrible decisions one after the other and goes off half-cocked and pissed every time but the two beings who are thousands of years old just go along with it. She's sexually attracted to both Vir and Aaron but doesn't want to do anything about it. She also has the new bond with Vir that she's fighting. I will be skimming the next one simply to answer my questions though I can't say I enjoyed this book. It's a real disappointment, with all the high reviews and the other books set in the same world I had hoped I found a new author to keep me occupied.

In regards to the soul bond. This is the first time I have read an author who used a soul bond or fated mates type point as a big contention point - where the bond itself is evil and manipulative - and I don't like it. Usually, the fated mates thing is a mark that you are already meant for each other, NOT something that twists your thoughts and actions in knots until you don't even know yourself. I haven't seen it used to force people to start seeing someone who is doing despicable things as them doing something good or at least something that doesn't matter and shouldn't get in the way of anything. I have seen it used as something that can be painful to ignore (to a point) but not something that tears your mind in half and drives you insane. Also, unless it's a reverse harem type situation, authors also don't usually make it so people continue to be highly attracted to other people and think of them all the time. Even when she was still bonded to Dani, her wolf also wanted Aaron and Vir. This is again something that doesn't happen outside harem books.

Vir can't cut the bond between Dani and him. Johnathan finally wakes up and tells Dani that Lars has her bestie Jo. And has had her for the past month since he kidnapped her the day after Dani escaped. They rescue Jo and right before Dani kills Lars he says he has her parents, because of course he does. He'll give them back if she brings back the statue she stole to pay Aaron for his help. She conveniently also drops the magic knife that kills just by breaking the skin. She agrees then after they leave she finds out Aaron - in the two days he had the statue - already gave the idol to Hades to pay his debt. Their new plan? Steal the idol from Hades.

Aaron offers to go alone, thinks he can slip in, get the statue, slip out. Dani of course can't have that, she HAS to go because they need the statue to get her parents.

New "twist" - vamps can't be touched by someone in love without their flesh burning? Really? Does this apply to ANYONE so they are never allowed to have someone love them, or just people in love with someone else? Or do they have to have an attraction to the person?

No. Just, no.

This book went downhill quickly. Dani was written to be extremely dumb, hot headed, immature and constantly with sex on her mind.

She can’t see obvious answers right in front of her. Hades told them something, and she asked the exact thing he had just said directly to her. For ex. Hades: It rained yesterday. Dani: Did it rain yesterday? And then she has the nerve to say he just looks at her and that answers her question or some crap. Like what? No author, no. Editing is a thing. Take that shit out. There were so many things that should have been edited out or move to another point in the story, things being repeated chapters later and don’t get me story on the poorly placed and timing of her inner monologues!

The girl is disrespectful and borderline bipolar. She makes a decision about herself, Vir and Aaron, then the next sentence and chapter later, she’s saying something different. She has admitted several times throughout the book about being inexperienced in knowledge where it comes to what she’s dealing with, yet every time either Aaron, Vir or even her father, try to tell her something important, she cuts them off, has a temper tantrum and disguises it as “putting her foot down”. That makes no sense. Shouldn’t you let them educate your dumb ass? So you can stop making dumb decisions. She’s selfish, spoiled and entitled. In the end she has the audacity to say she’s going to curse Aaron out for not having a table big enough in his apartment to seat the entire assembled team! Like WTF? You’re abusing this man’s hospitality. You would barely be able to fit 2-3 people in your own tiny apartment so be grateful he’s letting you all into his home in the first place!

If you can’t tell, I dislike the MC. This book could have been so much better if the author had of given her a better more humbled personality, especially since she’s supposed to be the heroine in the end, according to this book’s ending. She didn’t have a rough life growing up and had loving parents so there was no need for er to be such a horrible person.

See my notes, highlights and commentary on Goodreads. Happy reading!

Things are going to be tough in the next book for our FMC!

Since the beginning of the series, let's just say that Dani has learned a LOT in the last couple of months.

Shuldar, a lost civilization of shifters, was real, and her father essentially found it. Her parents, who disappeared suddenly, are alive. Gods are real. Vampires are real. Demons and so many other things are real. Her ex may not be a total jerk (I actually saw that coming from the beginning. He was never THAT bad). Oh, and his dad, the current alpha? He really IS that bad and is also dabbling with ancient magic, trying to become a god on earth.

No biggie.

There was something I was going to critique a bit, but I forgot what it is now. (I KNEW I should have written it down! I'll remember once this is posted.) Clearly, it isn't too big of a deal!

I'm just a bit sad this book isn't MFM. Dani has two 'interests' in this book, and as soon as I confirmed it was NOT MFM (a relationship with two men and a woman), I realized pretty quick who the other interest was going to end up with. Oh well!

The characters have all changed a fair bit from the beginning. Aaron, who was all put together, stoic, and seemed unfazed by everything, shows a lot more emotion now. Dani is getting stronger and learning a lot more about... well, everything, so she's really coming along. Then there's Vir, who with the Soulbond is beginning to feel emotions he never had before, and it's adorable when he talks about it to try and figure out what they are.

This is a pretty good series that I will likely read again in the future!

So I read this book because I wanted to find out about Dani's parents. I wanted to know if she would find them again. That question is answered in this book. But it leaves many other questions regarding her parents taking its place. As Dani is adopted and nobody seems to know what happened to her real parents. That is the whole story plot that has kept me reading this series so far... her adopted parents and now possibly getting some answers about her real parents. I might try reading some of the next book to see if they are mentioned and I can get those questions answered.

I can tell you now though that if there is no mention of them or even any hints of there being answers to those questions... I will DNF it. I can't stand Dani. She is as bad if not worse then what Lars is. She just doesn't seem to realize it or not care. Either way I don't like her and her bratty selfish ways. The author could kill her off and have somebody else take her place and I was say a prayer of thanks for it. I think the entire cast of characters in this book would be better off without her in it.

I don't think I have ever disliked a character and prayed for their death as much as I have with Dani. I really have no idea how she could redeem herself. Authors pull if off with male characters all the time, I don't think I have ever seen one try to redeem a female character before though. But there is a last book in this series... so here is to hoping that happens in the next book but I am not holding my breath on that one.

Still Soulbound ? . . .

Dani is still not free. She is still Soulbound, but now to an ancient shifter god. This gives her more strength, speed, and power. But she wanted the choice of love to be her own. She wanted the freedom to choose for herself. First they had forced a Soulbond on her. Then a god had severed it. But then he let himself be tied to her! She wasn’t about to take that lying down. She was ready to fight a god to be released. But apparently her own increased power, ramped up by anger, was still not in the same league as the ancient shifter god, Vir.

Then the pack Alpha, Lars, came by and Dani tried to zap him. Unfortunately, Vir didn’t let her do that. So she offered Lars the chance to pick up his son’s unconscious, half-burned body, but Lars called Johnathan a failure and said he could walk back to the pack on his own. He finally turned and left. Dani asked Vir why he stopped her and he explained that intending to do harm would have harmed her. He saved her. She felt the truth through their Soulbond, which reminded her of it and she looked him in the eyes and demanded, “Sever it”!

Lars will not give up trying to control Dani. Is she ready for the backlash? Will Vir break their bond? Grab your copy and find out all the repercussions of what’s going on.

Annoying

I really liked the concept of the storyline however the main character was really really annoying to the point I couldnt continue this second book beyond 31%. She is so full of herself and she thinks shes the queen bee or something, bossing no ordering everyone around even a powerful god. She constently states she doesnt want to lead yet she seems to have no problem at all with doing the leading. The main female character was very immature in my opinion for 21 yrs old and she treated others like there were dirt on her shoe. She was also always talking about her sex drive and how she wants to bed every male walking but only the strong and attractive ones of course. Then you get all the males apparently trying to get her attention, wanting her .... she plays all the men against one another and goes on and on and on about wanting to be alone and not soulbound to any as she wants to be given a choice. So her poor Alpha wasnt good enough and now a poor god isnt good enough, shes just too good for anyone. I dont think she has any feelings or any emotions. Throughout the first and the 31% of the second book these things mentioned in my review were on a repeat mode. I dont recommend this series and really dont know how it has been given 5 star reviews.

I want to start off by saying that im actually enjoying reading this series but i struggled a bit to get my head around a few things in this 2nd book. Alpha Lars was a big problem for me. There was a few opportunities to get him out of the picture (which i was hoping for) but they werent taken. I realised towards the end of the book kinda why they didnt get rid of Lars but it just did my head in. Also the relationship between Dani and Vir or should i say the lack of. I understand that with everything that has happened to Dani that she was cautious and reluctant but bloody hell does she dance round Vir. I really liked him and i kept holding on throughout this book for something to spark between them. I was a bit disappointed when nothing happened. I actually liked the journey into the underworld and the dynamic between Dani and all the guys. Not a bad read. im looking forward to the next book to see what will happen next

There are a lot of errors. Be they a change of color of a bathing suit to a whole scenario. I wasn’t going to read these but I’m curious as how the author is going with the story. She really needs an editor. Also the main character grinds on my nerves. From I don’t wNt to lead to constantly taking charge and butting her way In to everything. All while saying she not wanting to. Btw keep calling Jonathan a evil jerk for what he did to her parents. He didn’t do crap but tell her she was adopted. But she just keeps going on and on making it worse than it was. Seriously… he did fuck up with Jo but if u follow other shifter books u know an order from an alpha especially your own father is pretty much unable to do. Her supposed to be one of them she should know this. But acts like she has no dam clue how her own society works.

Dani is in for the next part of the fight against Lars the alpha.
At least she having support from some strong guys with surprises on their sleeves.
Including the God Vir with whom she is soulbound by accident.

Lars not only kidnapped her friend Jo, but also her parents Dani later founds out.

He wants to exchange them for a statute. Of course it isn't easy to get that statute, bringing them on a journey through the underworld.

Along the read more and more secrets come up and pointing out why Lars does what he does and who is helping him.

Is Dani smart and strong enough to rescue the people she loves?

For the answer to that you have to read the book. You won't regret it if you are into a good paranormal story with an evil guy in it.

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW of As Darkness Falls by Riley Storm. This second book in the Soulbound Shifters series picks up right where the first book leaves Dani, Johnathan, Vir and the crew. This heart pumping book continues the story in a snarky, dark humored, action packed telling that is loaded with secrets and some sexual tension. Hades makes an appearance and the fate of the world is once again put into the hands of a motley crew that is becoming increasing adept at handling whatever is thrown at them. This book does not resolve, but does set up for the next book! This series must be read in order, but is definitely worth the read!

Still not settling. Her life, her terms! Dani has more strength and powers, but she is still not likeable. She steps up and tries to work through her mission, but she is not a leader who inspires from likeability. Dani is now Soulbound to the god, Vir.Interesting how that came about. She is still fighting the bond because she is never given the choice. She is living life on her terms, her way. Dani is accumulating baggage through her travels. She is still fighting. I hope she can find put some luggage down and find rest. Does Dani have any luck finding her parents? Any joy with Lars? Any luck with Shuldar? Life is getting busy. Story is getting more interesting. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Dani finally has her freedom from the soul bond with her ex. Unfortunately, when the bond was broken by the shifter god Vir it shifted to him, which means she still doesn't have the freedom she craved. She can't dwell on that though, she finds out the alpha she despises kidnapped her best friend and she will do whatever is necessary to save her, including stealing from a god.
Absolutely wonderful characters, they are all well written and compelling, but I will admit to being partial to Dani. Exciting, and action packed adventure through different worlds. I love this book and series.

Book Two is Amazingly Spellbinding!
This saga continues right where it left off from book one. Dani, Vir, Aaron and his guys are all underground battling and Dani slowly emerging as their leader. Tough decisions need to be made in order to rescue her parents. Does everyone have what it takes to continue the journey?
I’m such a fan of this series although if I’m being honest, Dani can get a little bit much at times and I find myself questioning the author’s motive. But, that doesn’t stop me from looking forward to book three or recommending this book for your reading enjoyment. PEACE.

Book two in the soul kind shifters series
This is another good book from Riley storm. In the second book we find that everything didn’t go as planned and Dani finds herself connected to somebody else. But can they break this bond??
I am a huge fan of Riley Stone but I’m going to admit that I’m not connecting with The main character Dani. And it’s really annoying me because it’s never happened before don’t get me wrong I’ve enjoyed the story but there’s just something about Dani that’s putting me off. And that’s the only reason I’m not given it five stars

Wasn't awesome like the first book

So...I found much less enjoyment in this second installment to the series. Dani was rather annoying. I enjoy reading about a strong female lead but Dani went from being funny and strong to outright rude, immature, and annoying in this book. For the author to constantly mention Dani is 21, I would expect to read Dani behaving in a manner that fits her age better. The supporting characters were still likeable and there were some mysteries revealed, which was good.

I really hope the next installment is better.

DNF

I'm still struggling with Dani's character in this book. She is still self absorbed but now she is also acting entitled. In general, she is just not very nice and I have a strong dislike for main characters like that.

Vir's character has potential but he is not acting like a God.

I gave this second book a try despite not liking Dani because the storyline had a lot of potential. However, I just couldn't get past the character issues and in general the story doesn't look like it's getting more interesting.

loved the development

I am loving the development of this story and how it includes gods and vampires. We finally figure out what Aaron is and I’m sure there is more to his story in the next book. Is Dani going to give into the soul bond?? And man… I can’t imagine how jealous her Dad is regarding everything she has seen over the last year. So many questions though- I want to know!
What is Dani?! I’m sure this answer, will coincidentally answer many of my other questions.
Kudos to the author for keeping the reader on the hook!!

Mmmmmm

Love the gist of the story , not liking a smart butt girl and I'm saying that with kindness. She's hateful , not very bright , bosses older adults and down right rude . I'm an older adult .But as I love everything else about these books and a great author she is , I'm over looking this young bossy girl , as I've read these books already . It is an awesome story. Lots of action, mythological God's, werewolves, ancient mythical ruins , much more .Must read excited once more to travel into a world of awesome reading

The FMC is just unlikable - petty, aggressive, argumentative. Vir had such potential but feels like he’s been completely glossed over with no real attempt at character. We keep getting obstacle after obstacle without resolving relationship issues and honestly just the idea that all of the powerful supernatural beings and one actual god are just nodding their heads and going along with the scatterbrained decisions of a 21 year old shifter who has made stupid decisions the entire time. I wanted to like this one but

Good fast passes story.

This was a good fast paced story…but the villain Lars should’ve been killed in the first chapter.

I have no idea why he wasn’t. Since he wasn’t killed in the first chapter all the rest of the plot seemed contrived.

Vir literally saved Lars life in chapter 1 and even if he thought the power would’ve worked differently.

Vir himself could’ve easily killed Lars at that time.

So the villain was contrived to survive.

Dani, the wolf shifter. Vir, the god. Aaron, unknown. Dani has injured Johnathan badly but will he live? Her power came from nowhere. After Vir cut the soulbound cord between Johnathan and Dani, he accidentally soulbound himself to her. A temple. A golden cord. Two very handsome men. A gold statue. A visit to Hades. A daring rescue. Great continuation and can't wait for the next one to see just where this story goes.
