Tabitha’s entire life came undone because of a simple, mundane errand.
Now left a young, widowed mother with two boys, she has to pick up the pieces of the life she created with her husband, Tate.
But there are too many reminders. Too many memories. Too much of Tate woven into the world around her. Tragedy stole Tate from her and yet, he is everywhere.
A year later, consumed with grief and exhausted from going through the motions, Tabitha uproots her family to live in a small, fishing town on the Oregon Coast. She hopes to find healing and the fresh start they all need. She could never anticipate what would find her.

I honestly don’t have the words to do this book justice. It’s emotional, it’s sweet, it’s heartbreaking, it’s healing, it’s… it’s just fantastic. It consumed me entirely while reading and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. Caitlin is so fantastic at creating real characters that you cannot help but get attached to, which makes the stories hit that much harder. This is not a light hearted read, it hits some pretty hard topics, but it is done so so well. Ooo baby did I cry. I will absolutely be reading everything Caitlin has written and will every write, truly a fantastic writer!
I do want to comment that this story talks a bit about infertility and some of the emotions/feelings/fears around that topic and while I know that can be a hard topic to read about for many women, myself included, I just want to acknowledge how well I think it was handled here and how it made me feel so seen and validated. Although I have no diagnosed fertility complications or issues, a lot of what is mentioned in this book I have gone through or thought and this just made me feel okay in how I have felt through this complicated journey. This is so incredibly common but we are conditioned to not talk about it, so I think it’s great to have it be something we not only talk about more but also find in books.
Thank you so much Caitlin for sending me a copy of this fantastic book!
An emotional story blending sorrows and joys trying to move forward with life after loss.
Tabitha’s life is forever changed because of a quick errand to the store. Now a young, widow with two sons gathering the pieces without her husband Tate, but struggling with him being “everywhere.” A year later, still consumed with grief and exhausted from getting by day to day, she decides to make a big move in hopes of healing and a fresh start. How will this decision shift their lives? Read to find to out!! ;)
I loved it. It’s definitely tearful from the very first pages.
Loved the dual timeline! One with flashbacks starting from their last day followed by each of their summers backwards from the last one together getting to know Tate as a main character and their relationship, life, dreams making the emotions all the more real! While in the second, simultaneously watching Tabitha navigate her new reality as a single mom of two young boys with a loss I can’t even imagine as a wife and mother!!!
There is more to the present day story for you to find out all about!! I loved the small town fishing setting on the Oregon Coast. I loved the little details from cobblers to crabbing.
There are other topics presented about their life that may be triggering but I thought were handled with care.
This was my first book by @caitlinmossauthor but I’m looking forward to checking out more in the future!!
The first thing you should know is that I cried within the first 20 pages.
The second thing you should know is that Caitlin Moss is a masterful storyteller and character development pro. I was sucked into the characters and their stories from the very first page.
It’s no secret (it’s in the synopsis) that the main character, Tabitha (not Tabby), experiences enormous loss and grief from the beginning of the book. She experiences one of my worst nightmares as a wife and mother. And Caitlin handles grief and loss incredibly well, shining a light on how it can completely upend a person and impact how they live and interact with others, even and especially with their children.
Something else I really love is the structure. Caitlin sets the book up by telling the reader about the day Tabitha’s world changed forever as a result of a mundane errand, and then she alternates the chapters by telling Tabitha and Tate’s story going backwards (starting with summer 16) and telling Tabitha’s present-day story without Tate. I loved this because it allowed me to learn about Tate and their relationship with the knowledge that she lost him in the back of my mind, making the experience all the more emotional and surreal.
And then, there’s the present day story. I don’t want to give too much away, but what I will say is that Caitlin is SO good at crafting characters that feel like real people. The setting details are also phenomenal, transporting me directly to the Oregon coast from my sticky, humid suburban suburb.
This is a sweet, emotional story of a woman who has to rebuild everything she’s known while trying to carry her loss on her shoulders for both herself and her two children, something I truly cannot imagine doing. Again, I loved this book so much — if you’re a fan of emotional romances that tug at your heartstrings while exploring the capacity of the human heart to heal and hope for the days to come, I think you’ll love it, too.
3.75 stars. I will definitely be reading more of Caitlin’s books. The book was very emotional, and I had to know what would happen.
I loved the plot and how the author told the story with different timelines. I got to experience Tabitha’s journey as well as the growth in her relationships. I felt empathic towards Tabitha raising her two boys alone, and they desire to start new.
Dylan was the sweetest. I loved how patient and caring he was towards this family.
If I had to be nitpicking, I had a couple issues with the editing, but once again I really enjoyed the story and the topics in the story had me emotionally invested. I can’t wait to read more by Caitlin.
CW: Some mild language, which felt appropriate for the emotion and grief experienced. There were a couple spicy scenes but not overly descriptive. Readers should be aware of topics that include: infertility, death of a loved one, PPD, childhood cancer, alzheimer's.
I’d been warned that I would cry and I did…in the best ways. Such a good read. I recommend to everyone who has ever had or wants their heart broken and put back together again.
From page one I was riding an emotional rollercoaster that felt custom tailored to my exposed heart.
Tabitha and Tate’s love is one I can relate to so well that I was emotionally rocked by the fate they found. I wanted to seek my husband out in the house and hold him to remind myself that it wasn’t ME who had lost HIM. Moss even goes on to say later that the memories Tabitha holds onto of Tate are only the good ones and that, of course, he wasn’t perfect, but that was no concern to her now that he was gone. Having lost my mom last year this is a feeling I know personally. I was always very protective over her but you’ll certainly never her me elaborate on her imperfections now that she’s gone. When you lose someone that means that much to you, you keep the light and leave the rest.
It’s hard to picture how Tabitha could ever find love again after losing Tate. To overcome the grief, to build a new life around it. It all just feels too hard and unimaginable. However, Moss managed to illustrate life after loss so artfully that it’s hard to believe she wrote fiction rather than from her own experience. I mean it when I say. I. Felt. Everything.
I LOVE a solid realistic story that makes you feel. Like sitting down and getting to know someone new and making a lifelong friend. That’s what this book was for me and reading it slowly made the gradual connection that much deeper and more penetrating. It wasn’t bells and whistles or twists and turns or racy heat fueled by shallow characters. This novel has a damn soul.
If any of what I just said speaks to you, buy your copy now and thank me later. I’m proud to call Moss a fellow self-pub author. She is simply brilliant.
Loved it! This was my first Caitlin Moss book, and it won’t be my last! Caitlin’s a detail oriented writer without it being tedious. She paints a vivid picture of the location, storyline, etc., with her delightful use of words. It made me want to go and explore the areas where the book takes place. I live in the PNW so it was wonderful to recognize and relate to the locations in the book.
I didn’t know what the storyline was about until I started reading it, and normally I don’t love a storyline that involves the death of a spouse, but Caitlin has definitely got a knack for making a story completely relatable, and sometimes heart wrenching, but at the same time carefully getting you to the end of the story feeling fulfilled and satisfied with all of the emotions that occur.
Her character development is well done in this book and makes you feel like you’re experiencing the story along with the characters.
All in all this was a heartwarming read that I would definitely recommend.
This is one of the most unique books I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. The way it deals with grief, and healing from the loss of a loved one is unlike anything I’ve read before. I really loved the dual timelines in this book, we got to see Tabitha’s past life with her Husband, and her present life where she is trying to move on and settle into her new life. This is a pretty heavy book and deals with serious subjects, but I think it was all handled so beautifully.
This is one of those books that really made me stop and think about life, about what is truly meaningful, and how everything can change in an instant. Books that make me reflect on real life are always some of my favourite and this one touched my heart in a really special way. Although I read this in December I still think about Tabitha, Tate, and Dylan often. And I will never look at Cobbler the same way again 🥲
I can’t wait to read more of Caitlin Moss’ novels, this ended up being one of my favourite books of 2022. And I hope to find another favourite by her in the future.
This book was AMAZING! Caitlin Moss is officially an auto-buy author for me! This is the story of Tabitha, a single mom to 2 boys after the death of her husband and her journey through grief and finding happiness. This was a tough read for me, but it was so beautiful. My heart broke for Tabitha and I felt so connected to her. The storyline of this book was so unique because you get to experience both of Tabitha's love stories. You get to see the story of her falling in love with her husband and their life together and her story of love after loss. The friendships and family relationships in this book were perfection and everything you would want in your life. I just loved it and I read it too fast and I will probably reread it immediately.
I loved THE CRACKS BETWEEN US, but I absolutely adored SIXTEEN SUMMERS. The themes explored in this book both pulled on my heartstrings and also gave me so much joy and optimism about life, love, healing, and hope. I read the whole thing in two sittings and probably would have read it in one if that crazy thing called life hadn't gotten in the way. I thought about the book during the entire time between when I started it and when I finished it. The story itself is powerful, but it's the writing for me that really sets Moss apart. I will continue to read all of her works, even though I don't consider myself to be a romance fan. Hell... she's making me rethink that assertion with every book she pens.
Get ready to cry! Wow. This book breaks your heart then puts it back together. Tabitha is in her 30s but as a woman in my early 20s, I still found myself empathizing and relating to her. It’s so exciting to follow new authors and Caitlin Moss is one I can’t wait to read more from.
Grief is a funny thing, I feel Caitlin did a beautiful job depicting it because parts of this was rough to get through. Time heals all wounds, we see that as our MC Tabitha meets Dylan and he shows her you can move on but still hold the past close to your heart.
“Do you think life gives us more than one great love story?” Lydia looked up and placed her hand on my arm. “Absolutely. And if you don’t, it’s because you aren’t allowing yourself to be open to it.”
Sixteen Summers is such a beautiful and wholesome story about love, loss, grief, and second chances. I could say a lot about this book, but I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll just start by saying how this book really got me. The way the chapters are presented is so important for the flow of the story, and I really appreciated that. It slowly made the feelings intensify regarding Tabitha’s late husband. I could understand that she was hurting, but the way the flashback chapters were told in a backward way reels you in unexpectedly. I appreciate the mention of white t-shirts and gray sweatpants because *drools*.
I’ll share a few of my favorite highlights:
— “People used to tell me marriage wasn’t all hearts and butterflies forever—that as time marched forward the attraction and lust would dull around the edges. But that was never true for us.”
— That was always Tate. Giving me second chances. Letting me redeem myself when I had completely lost my mind. Forgiving me when I was crazy. And loving me for exactly who I was.
— “I wasn’t ready for you,” I whispered as my body curved perfectly under his arms. “And I feel like I’ve spent my entire life waiting for you,” he said, his breath in my hair, his lips on my skin.
— “Well, you know what they say: time is a thief but it’s also the best thing for a broken heart.”
This was my first Caitlin Moss book & I have already jumped into another immediately after finishing this one. This book came highly recommended from a friend & I am so glad I read it. I started this book & was crying by page five. She hits you in the gut quickly with this one but the ride she takes you on throughout is beautiful. This is a beautiful book about grief, family, love & moving on. I loved the different timeline pov that we got this with. We got to see those 16 summers & the cobblers (IYKYK) while also seeing Tabitha in the present trying to move on & make her life what it is now. I loved getting to go back & forth & getting to dive into more of these characters & what made them so special. I loved all of the characters, I loved the strength and growth this book takes you on, I loved the friendship & the families, & the hope this book gives. While this is a love story, this is not a typical love story but do not sit on it. It is such a beautiful story.

“Grief. Deep sorrow, especially that caused by someone’s death.”It’s never linear. It’s messy and it’s always a roller coaster of emotions. There are ups and downs, twists and turns. Try adding two kids and learning how to move forward and love someone new. Sixteen Summers is both heart wrenching and heart warming at the same. This story is about grieving the loss of what you thought was forever and this beautiful life you created with someone. Only to have it shattered, and then trying to pick up the pieces in a new town with two beautiful children and learning how to love someone new. You learn the story of the husband Tabitha lost and watch as a new love story unfolds and how grief plays a big role. Beautifully written and I give ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for this review. Highly Recommend.
I met the author, Caitlin Moss at a ladies night and was immediately captivated by her description of this book. I grew up near Newport, Oregon, where this book was based and couldn’t pass up the chance to reminisce, even through fiction.
Right away I connected with Tabitha and the moody grieving versions of herself. I related with her heartbreaks and quirks, and found her to be worthy character. I genuinely enjoyed the storyline, the characters and most of all, the way in which Caitlin wove reoccurring themes throughout. I successfully felt connected to both Tate and Dylan without even knowing that was possible (I tend to be a stickler for the husband). Would definitely recommend this book… and yes, I did cry. 😉
This is such a beautiful love story. I laughed and cried and loved this book. The way that Caitlin interwove the love and grief between Tabitha, Tate and Dylan is just seamless. It truly depicted the complexities of grief, the guilt and anger and loss someone feels when they lose the love of their life. And then we get to see the beauty of hope and new love emerge with Dylan. I highly recommend this book, I’m going to grab a few copies to gift to friends.
From the opening of this story to the last words written, your heart is taken on a journey. I love how Caitlin describes the scenes and emotions that will take you into the headspace of a young widow.
I felt myself cheering for her and her boys, sad about the circumstances, but also longing for her to figure out what was best for her and her future.
Check this read out! Looking forward to future writing from this talented writer!
Crying by page 11 and could not wait to see what happened next. I did not want to put this book down! The book does turn up so the tears turn into smiles and the story just keeps you cheering for the sweet Momma! I’m a sucker for a good romance and I loved it so much, I’ve already read it again! Go snag a copy ASAP!
This was a beautiful book that broke my heart and put it back together. I was hoping to read a summertime book that was silly and had predictable love stories. Though it did have a predictable love story to me, it was nothing like I was looking to read but in the best way. It's a book about loss and moving through that loss. It's about forgiving yourself just as you forgive others. It reminds you to be patient and to trust yourself. There were a lot of wonderful lessons and I'm happy I ended up with this in my hands at this time of my life.
Such a beautiful, moving read! The book starts with Tabitha suddenly losing the love of her life, Tate, and follows her journey as she lives through the grief and rebuilds her life as a single mom with her two sons. Between flashbacks of her life with Tate and her current journey finding herself again, this is such a well written book that kept me fully engaged throughout!
This was so beautiful and truly captures what grief looks/feels like and what that means moving forward. Tabitha is a force and SO brave. Tate was EVERYTHING and Dylan is a DREAM. This broke my heart but healed it at the same time. Beautifullllyyyy written!!! Love love loveeed it
Such a cute romance book. Loved the storyline and characters. Very believable book to life. Definitely a heartfelt book. I wish it had more detail about Dylan’s dad though of what happened in the end to him even though he was a small bit in the story. 4.5⭐️
This book will absolutely wreck your emotions and put you back together! The ending is absolutely amazing and I loved this book! Highly recommend going into fairly blind.
A character-driven love story that will give you all the feels. The plot flows effortlessly, even when the story is at times painful. Moss’ use of language is just really beautiful- she is such a talented writer! Do yourself a favor and buy this book for your upcoming vacay, beach trip, girls weekend… actually just buy this book! You won’t regret this read ☺️
