Loved by a Dangerous Duke

Rate this book
Is she desperate enough to marry a man she loathes? Sadly, yes…

He always has his way…

Stanford is aware of his nickname, The Dangerous Duke—and it suits him just fine. Inheriting a bankrupt dukedom and rebuilding it taught him just how useless niceties were. Except now, he’s ready to choose a duchess, and the only one he deems suitable (and enticing) enough despises him. Perhaps he should reconsider the value of niceties

She’s a most reluctant bride…

Ophelia Breckensole knows what she wants, and it is not Stanford. But fate plays into his hand when she finds herself unwittingly compromised. Now, she must wed or face ruination—and Stanford is only too pleased to help. So, she’ll marry him, but she won’t love him. Or so she keeps telling herself…

But Stanford and Ophelia have much more to overcome on their path to happily ever after than his austere nature and her vow to never love her husband. Stanford’s enemies are determined to make him pay for his past, and they’re willing to use Ophelia to do it. Can this fragile union survive such an onslaught?

Series: Seductive Scoundrels #13
Publication Date: 7/20/21
Period: Regency London

I thoroughly enjoy this author’s books. Her characters are always delightful, the writing is excellent, well-paced, and well-delivered, and the witty banter always leaves you wanting more. In this book, we have those delightful characters in the form of Miss Ophelia Breckensole and Stanford Bancroft, the Duke of Asherford. They may seem a most unlikely pair, but it seems opposites really do attract – OR – are they really opposites?

Stanford is known as the Dangerous Duke because of the methods he used to turn the fortunes of his duchy around. He had few options when he inherited the run-down, pockets-to-let title at the age of fourteen. With hard work, courage, determination, and sheer intelligence, he did what most grown men could not – he turned the duchy around and made one of the richest and most powerful ones in the realm. He did all of that by the time he was twenty-five. Many thought he was ruthless, but he had to use the tools at hand and he never, ever, forced anyone to wager. He did, however, expect those who wagered and lost to pay their debts. Strangely, some of those whose debts he collected didn’t think they should be required to pay.

Ophelia Breckensole is a bright light who brings smiles and happiness wherever she goes. She’s good-natured, kind, and loving – and is absolutely aghast when that pompous, cold, hard-hearted, self-centered, dour, Duke of Asherford tells her they should wed. He doesn’t ask her; he just tells her they would suit and then lists all of the reasons she’d make an excellent duchess. He doesn’t even make a rudimentary attempt at wooing. Well – her answer, of course, is a resounding NO! When he persists, she promptly tells him he doesn’t always get what he wants. He just smiles and lets her know that, yes, he does.

When fate decides to step in and lend a hand, Stanford is happy about it – but not happy about it. He’s happy Ophelia will become his Duchess, but he doesn’t want her to feel forced into marrying him. He doesn’t see much choice for her because it is either ruination or marriage – but he still wants her to be able to choose.

It was lovely to watch these two get to know each other and come to love each other. I’m sure Stanford was already in love, he just didn’t know it yet, but Ophelia had always disliked Stanford, so it took a bit for her to have a grand epiphany. As she came to care for him, she realized her heart – “Well, the silly, gullible organ fluttered like an inebriated moth when he directed his full charm toward her.”

I can definitely recommend this book and will probably read it again in a few months. Not only are Ophelia and Stanford delightful, but he had lovely visits with characters from both previous and future books in the series. I hope you’ll enjoy this book as much as I did.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A thoroughly enchanting story with a twist! A duke who has pulled his inherited estate out of penury to being quite wealthy, albeit, making a few enemies along the way, has his sights on one lady in particular, who rebuffs his proposal of marriage!

Finding herself in a compromised situation, she is forced to marry him. His affection for her seemed to grow quickly and he truly wanted to make her happy. But would she be?

Humor, witty banter, wonderful characters who grow as the pages are turned, pull all the facets of Collette's trademark storytelling to a conclusion that left me with a smile!

This is the thirteenth book in this wonderful series, it’s very easily read on its own. Another very well written, well paced book with delightful characters. I loved both Stan & Ophelia, their verbal banter was a joy & their attraction just grew & grew. He found a way to replenish the dukedom’s coffers which, meant he made enemies & earned him his nickname but now he wants to show his true self to Ophelia, especially as he’s fallen for her. I loved their road to a HEA & how they got to know each other & of course how they came to realise they loved each other. I also loved cameo appearances from previous characters & how new characters were introduced so hopefully this series will continue for quite some time
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

This is a sweet love story that took just a few hours to read. I wouldn't call it an enemies-to-lovers trope exactly, but Ophelia thought Stanford was too pragmatic and full of himself and when he presented the idea of betrothal to her, it came out more like a business deal. She didn't find that even remotely amusing and who can blame her? Every girl likes some romance. Right?

Stan spends the rest of the book, trying to mend his ways and win her over, no matter how weird it seemed to him to step outside his comfort zone. He knew he had to have her.

I liked this book a lot. I loved the characters, the fact that Stanford had a job that was risky and was pretty much a self-made man, and the story was adventurous and had action in it. There was never a dull moment.

Easy five stars.

This is a quick easy read with everything a good romance should have. Two endearing people, one Lady Ophelia Breckensole who has been raised in the county but has a Duke for a brother-in-law.
She is use to wealth but is not spoiled or demanding. Then we have The Duke of Asherford, Standford
nicknamed by the ton as The Dangerous Duke. He knows of the name and it doesn't bother him a bit.. Having become a Duke at the impossible age of fourteen to a Dukedom that was bankrupt he learned the hard way what was important and what was not. With his intelligence and hard work, he has restored the Dukedom to what it should be. He has now decided he needs a Duchess, after seeing Ophelia at a ball he has decided she meets everything he is looking for and tells her so !! Oh, my Ophelia cannot believe that Standford just stated at a ball that they should wed ! Then to make it worst he was shocked she said NO, never... What a cold-blooded peer. He made it sound like choosing her was no different than choosing what he wanted for dinner, of all the nerve.
She spends the next weeks staying out of his way, till unfortunately feat steps in and everything changes. Poor Ophelia is caught in a compromised way by the biggest gossips of the ton. Now she has no choice but to wed or be ruined. Standford is more than happy to step up and marry her.
Once again, he got what he wanted. Ophelia vows to never love him.
These two have much to overcome if they are to find some happiness together. Standford wants to get her out of town and to the county for a number of reasons. He has secrets he is keeping from her. So does she. Neither has let their beginning feelings show to the other.. This is a fast-paced short story that will keep you reading once you start. I loved the banter between these two. Both are so strong willed but have some much love to give.
I hope you get a copy and find out what happens, this is not a steamy read, but it has much romance in it. There are twist and turns you don't see coming. It is a great read.
I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.

Stanford Julius Frederick Bancroft, Duke of Asherford, known as The Dangerous Duke. Inheriting his title at age thirteen, he brought it out of debut using cunning skill and nefarious methods. Not knowing how to handle all that would come later, it was what he knew. He bought up markers and forced full payment with interest on gambling debits. With that he invested widely which have him what was needed. Now he no longer buys markers just managed his estates well, his investments, and does not mind the moniker.

Ophelia Audrey Summer Breckensole, twin to a duchess, she is polite but intelligent. She knows what she likes and wants. Birds fascinate her and she has a catalog of one's she has seen. She grew up in the country and has no brothers.

When Asherford first met Ophelia he knew she was special, so he watched her for a year. Deciding it was time to marry and beget heirs, he chooses logically as he always does. Ophelia tried to keep her distance from Asherford as she believes he is his moniker.

She Asherford tells her they will suit and marry Ophelia's hackles are raised. She tells him "No" the proceeds to dump a glass of lemonade on him. From there she gathers friends and her sister to help out a bigger between herself and him. He, however, ends up whispering in her ear when no one is around.

At the Roma Festival, an old gypsy woman tells them their fortune and an incident occurs that has major consequences for them both. Then someone from his past creates more danger. Will these two find attraction of remain foes. What was the outcome of the consequence? Will the added danger from his past cause harm or be stopped in time?

With the creativity, witty banter, and dynamic characters Collette is know for, she delivers a masterfully crafted fast read in this story that will amaze you at every turn. I was half way through and was like no way I want more time. I could not stop reading it was as if I was right in the mix of it all.

Loved by a Dangerous Duke is the 13th installment in Collette Cameron’s Seductive Scandals series. I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful story. It is well-written, full of witty banter, and the characters are wonderful.

Stanford Bancroft, Duke of Asherford is used to getting his way. He is perplexed when Ophelia Breckensole says no to his blunt marriage proposal and when she informs him that he cannot always have his way. He is so arrogant he truly believes he can always have his way.

Ophelia isn’t against marriage per se. She just wants a love-match, not a marriage of convenience. And a marriage of convenience is exactly what Stanford proposed. However, when she is inadvertently compromised, she must decide between marriage to Stanford or ruination.

Stanford and Ophelia’s story is full of humor, tenderness, great chemistry, suspense, and love. I so enjoyed watching Stanford realize his mistakes and go from a total clod pole to a charming romantic! There are heartwarming cameos of characters from previous books. This is the perfect book if you have a few free hours over a weekend and want to immerse yourself in a wonderful love story! I’m sure you will enjoy it every bit as much as I did.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of the book and gladly leave my unbiased opinion.

Collette Cameron’s Loved by a Dangerous Duke: A Regency Romance (Seductive Scoundrels Book 13) is a wonderful tale of how love can transform even the hardest of hearts.

Stanford, Duke of Asherford, finds Ophelia the most desirable prospect for a wife. There just one problem, Ophelia Breckensole finds Stanford the most arrogant, insulting, hard hearted, infuriating man alive and she can’t stand him. His proposal was more of a business deal but she was compromised and accepted, vowing never to love him. Until…

The authors voice and her writing style is simply dazzling, witty, funny at times, romantic and enthralling. When you read her books you’re always in for a treat. I love how she brings these to main characters together. I love how Stanford wins her heart with his dogged determination and his own self reflection.

The characters take on a life of their own, pulling you into the story from the start. With her superb writing skills she brings the story to life throwing in a little intrigue, lots of tender emotions, fabulous chemistry and such witty and romantic dialogue as these two get to know one another and find they are truly meant for one another.

Thank you so much Ms. Cameron for such a charming and sweet tale of love and romance.

This is such a charming and sweet romance, from start to finish. I love a marriage of convenience story, where the couple fall madly in love after the fact. Stan is the “Dangerous Duke” who always gets his way, and has earned his reputation. He informs Ophelia that they should marry as he believes they will suit. She answers back with lemonade down his suit and telling him not to waste his time, as it will never happen. But he pursues and she softens. Their dialogue and banter are clever and endearing. In an intense moment when Stan comes to her rescue, they are suddenly compromised and must wed before the courtship has even started. After the rushed wedding, his courtship and wooing is nothing short of endearing. She couldn’t help but fall in love with the man he truly was, and a reader can’t help but fall in love with this story!

What a lovely sweet read. This was full of romance with some action and suspense added in. The characters were wonderfully written with warmth and love. As usual, the unusual words Ms Cameron uses brings a smile to your face as you read. This makes these reads so different to most historical romances. This was a quick read that left you feeling good when it was finished. There was no sex in this book but some references to it which is a nice touch. I received this book as an ARC and freely give my review.

Very enjoyable, sweet romance about Stanford Bancroft, Duke of Asherford (known as the Dangerous Duke) and Ophelia Breckensole. Stanford is used to getting his way, so is quite flummoxed to hear Ophelia say no to his proposal. But she doesn't realize just how dangerous he can be when his feelings are involved. Loved the characters, the feeling of reality to this story, and the ultimate HEA.

This is such a wonderful addition to the Seductive Scoundrels series & although I have loved them all, this is my favorite!

Stanford (Stan) Bancroft, Duke of Asherford is known around society as the "Dangerous Duke" - a well-deserved moniker because of his severe & strict manner in his attitude & appearance. He inherited a bankrupt dukedom & has spent years rebuilding it. Now he is ready to do his duty & find a suitable lady, but the one he has deemed deserving to be his duchess, wants absolutely nothing to do with him. He will convince her, after all "I always gets my way"!

Ophelia Breckensole is not against marriage, but a marriage of convenience is what the duke announced by saying she has adequate qualities for his duchess, he needs an heir & he felt they would suit sufficiently. Everyone just knew it was going to be an announcement of a new betrothal until Ophelia looked at the duke & said "No, Your Grace. That was three weeks ago & the boorish clod has been unrelenting is his suit, even after she had made it clear she would rather marry a toad.

Their cat & mouse game begins with so much humor & fun but hiding & chasing can eventually put you in an unwanted & compromising position. She must wed him or face ruination, but she will never love him........we'll see & the trip to a HEA is fantastic! This book has it all & the emotions I felt in one scene because of Stan's past & his love for Ophelia had me in tears. The ending made me smile & left me feeling happy! I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.

To say Ophelia Breckensole was NOT swept off her feet by the Duke of Asherford’s marriage proposal would be an understatement. He’s determined to have her as his wife. She’s determined to avoid him (& his conceited, domineering ways).
After Ophelia turns the Duke down flat, he decides to change tactics.
Discovering that just being Stan, instead of Stanford Bancroft, Duke of Asherford makes it much easier to make her happy.
This is a fun, quick read. A little like a cool drink on a hot summer day. Both lead characters are easy to like, & easy to root for as they find their way to a HEA.
I was able to read an ARC of this book, & this is my honest review.

A NOT SO DANGEROUS DUKE
The Duke of Asherford is in pursuit of Ophelia Breckensole. He's already informed her that she will make the perfect Duchess. Ophelia doesn't like someone making decisions for her, but he doesn't take "NO!" for an answer. When Ophelia is abducted, Stanford is in pursuit. Too many see what happened, then they're engaged. It's takes a near death experience for a Duke and Duchess to admit they love each other. A short read, with some humorous thoughts and the Dangerous Duke becomes besotted with his wife.

Loved by a Dangerous Duke by Collette Cameron.

Stanford Bancroft, Duke of Ashford didn’t exactly propose to Ophelia Breckensole. No, he informed her that he had selected her and of course, it was her great honor for being picked. She will have none of that. Realizing his mistake, he sets off to woo her.

This story was such a delight to read. There was wooing, danger, being compromised, family friends, blackmail, and quite a journey to HEA. Well written story that I highly recommend. I received a free copy and have chosen to leave a review.

I liked the tension between the main characters Stanford the Duke of Asherford, and Ophelia Breckensole. Both have appeared in previous books. Sassy and stubborn Ophelia claims to have a back of steel. However, when she is around Stanford aka the Dangerous Duke, she lifts her chin while her bones melt on her. Stanford is cocky in the beginning. But as Ophelia and Stanford get to know each other they find they have more in common than just lust. An excellent read. I highly recommend it.

2.25 stars.

This was a nice and easy short read between longer books. CC is my go-to when I don't want to think too hard and when I haven't decided what I want to read next. Coming off a long read is always the perfect time for something by this author.

However, with the short length comes the usual pitfalls: lack of character development, lack of credible drama, etc. Overall though, it was safe, with no OP drama, and I always appreciate that.

Don’t you love it when a rogue falls for the heroine? And then she won’t have anything to do with him!!

Stanford has cultivated his reputation for many years, a cold and calculating man who rebuilt the Dukedom from scratch, but to do that he’s had to be ruthless.

Ophelia is frustrated, a man she despises has the audacity to demand her have in marriage! No wooing, no courting, just a list of reasons! Well she’s not going to have it, she might not have much say in her future, but she’s going to stay away from the Dangerous Duke!

Reading how Stanford will do anything to obtain his goal (Ophelia) did have me a little annoyed, then when you remember what era this is set in, you’ll understand where he was coming from.
(Women weren’t given a voice or an opinion in that era)
Then when finding out he won’t get the young lady in question, The Dangerous Duke will have to change tactics and maybe show Ophelia the Stanford he keeps hidden!!

It’s a really good story, and although it’s book thirteen in this series, there is no need to read in order.
Saying that, there are characters I believe maybe in other books (well it’s a good excuse to read the series) 😉

Reading the interactions between Stanford and Ophelia will have you laughing one minute then shaking your head the next. You have to admire Stanford, when he decides to turn over a new leaf and woo the lovely young Ophelia he throws himself into the task.

But fate lends a hand to Stanford, poor Ophelia is caught in a compromising position. And so Stanford swoops in and says marry him or face ruin! What’s a girl to do?!

But Stanford isn’t allowed a happy ending! And someone is waiting in the wings biding their time!
Is it someone Stanford ruthlessly ruined in the past?

Can they really be happy? Can they get past the names and reputations? And will the danger pass them without incident?

Ophelia also wants to open a house for ladies whose reputations have been ruined sounds like a possible idea for a book.

It’s a nice afternoon read.

This 13th book in Ms. Cameron’s Seductive Scoundrels series is another charming addition to one of my favorite Regency series. It is a top-notch, pseudo enemies to lovers offering. The daggers drawn, two main characters, Ophelia Breckensole and Stanford Bancroft, Duke of Asherford, are such likable characters. Ophelia thinks Stan is the most insulting, arrogant, and cold-blooded peer she has ever met. She’s taken to hiding from him at assemblies since he keeps pressing his suit. It’s not that she is opposed to marriage, just not to him. Stan is not used to people saying no to him. He realizes he will have to woo this lady. The writing flows well as the author creates the yin and yang atmosphere between the couple. She blends in some action as well as some suspense as Ophelia and Stan travel their road to romance. I also liked her incorporating appearances by characters from previous works. As is true of several other works in this series, there is no sexual congress but innuendos. You’ll feel good, will like the characters, and bring a smile to your face if you read Loved by a Dangerous Duke. I was offered an ARC of this work and gladly rate it 4 – 4 ½ Stars. All opinions stated are my own.

A sweet and sassy read

The way Stanford proposes to Ophelia is cold and blunt so she says no and pours lemonade on him when he tries to explain why she would be a good match. He is use to getting his way but knows he has to figure out a way to woo her. She sees him following her and does all kinds of shenanigans to try and get away from him. They end up meeting at a faire where they enjoy time together until he goes to get them a drink. Ophelia is attacked and while he saves her, she is ruined unless she agrees to his marriage proposal. She has no choice. After their marriage, he takes her to one of his estates where they spend time getting to know each other. However it is only after she is shot that they realize they have found love. It is a short but sweet and sassy story.
