This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the 5th book in the K-9 Search and Rescue series. I have read and review the other books in this series, but I do not think you need to read these books in order. Normally, In the K-9 Search and Rescue books I love the dog character the most, but In this book I really love the second chance romance that was going on in this book. The dog, Scarlett in this book was great and I enjoyed her. I really love the characters in this book, and you could feel the love they have for each other from the second they see each other. The mystery and the romance was a great mix in this book. I have to say I guess most the twists before they where reveal, but I still loved reading the whole book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Love Inspired Suspense) or author (Lynette Eason) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

Hopping into this one make me pretty aware it was connected to another book, but not the series on the front label—another of Eason’s that I have read before and which was set in the same area. But I couldn’t remember which one (I’ve read 55 of hers and they aren’t all on the same shelf for easy reference) so it took me a bit to get oriented.

Once settled in, I really liked this fast paced murder mystery, the two leads, and the featured working dog. Unraveling what her sister had been up to that got her killed, before Lacey herself gets killed, is no easy task! Creed was a great hero, too.

Fun and enjoyable story.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free reading copy. A favorable review was not required.

What a ride! This book was tense and held high stakes as well as twists galore that kept me guessing until the very end. I loved the shocking climax and the final scene. There was such a fantastic use of secrets in this story that it felt like an old whodunit rather than a suspense/thriller at times. I loved that! The search dog was used the perfect amount: more than once but not so much that the searches took over the plot. Great touch! The characters were well developed and had good motivations throughout. The second-chance romance was superb and had the right touch of regret and anger before shifting into reliance because of desperation, friendship, and eventually romance. Lacey and Creed were wonderful and realistic. Their problems were vivid and urgent throughout, and it was easy to root for them or fear for them, by turn, because they were such lovable folks. The dog was special and well included.

This is a book five, so I recommend reading the books in order. In the early chapters, it was hard to keep track of the various couples mentioned because I hadn’t experienced their romances yet. So coming into the series cold-turkey at book five was not a smart idea; it left me a bit lost, though Mrs. Eason did a fantastic job of giving identifying markers as to their relationships to the leads of the current story.

Content: alcohol mentioned, marital affairs

Breathtaking action, intriguing suspense and a reunion romance -- can it get any better than that? Why, yes it can, as a matter of fact, when you factor in search-and-rescue K-9, Scarlett. All written to sweet perfection by one of my fave suspense authors.

So -- the romance -- beautifully developed. I love the way Lacey and Creed deal with their past with compassion and forgiveness, but that doesn't make a romantic rekindling a given. In fact, they are both committed to futures apart from each other and determined to keep their relationship professional and cordial. Which works out as well as you might expect when Lynette Eason is calling the shots. :-) Speaking of which...

There's no end of danger and sharp hairpin plot turns to thrill the discerning romantic suspense aficionado. But punctuated with quieter moments where Creed and Lacey have time to remember how good it felt to be a couple. :-) This is me grinning silly because it's that kind of a romance!

And, woohoo, I listened to the audible edition (and am beyond thrilled that we're getting some of the Love Inspired books in audio format!) Emma Lysy did an amazing job of bringing this story to life.

I have long enjoyed Lynette Eason’s writing. Her suspense stories are so good. This one has a particularly good plot that I really liked a lot. A murdered woman with a secret that led to any more secrets. Very nicely done.

My thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinion here is my own.

Special Entertainment

For anyone who enjoys a good story without cursing, graphic violence, and/or sexual content. So far in the 5 of 6 books in this series and many (Love Inspired Suspense) books, there has been no repetition, each story standing on its own. I love the dogs and how they are realistically portrayed. I am disabled and pretty much confined to my bed for several years now. (I am 71 yrs. Old) The love inspired suspense books (and they are quite suspenseful at times), combined with craft projects I can do while lying on my tummy, such as crochet and the like have kept me sane and for the most part happy. Thank you to the writers and publishers of these wonderful and affordable books that considerably brighten my days. God bless you all. Claudia Anne

Following the Trail by Lynette Eason gives readers an intriguing mystery to solve. Lacey Jefferson heads back to her hometown of Timber Creek. She can’t get ahold of her sister and wants to track her down. But when her ex-boyfriend Creed Payne asks if she can use her search and rescue dog to locate a missing child, she soon uncovers that her sister was murdered. The killer doesn’t want Lacey investigating and she just wants to find out the truth. Her sister had some secrets and Lacey and Creed seek to solve the case.

This story is action-packed! Lacey and Creed dodge bullets as they keep searching for answers. But the more the danger increases, so does the romantic tension between Lacey and Creed. They need to overcome past hurts to find a future together. I also love Scarlett, Lacey’s search and rescue dog. I might have done an online search to see if I could adopt a redbone coonhound!

Overall this story brings the suspense with Lacey’s mission to find the truth about her sister. The ending plot twists make this a must-read!

Questa storia mi è piaciuta. Fino alla fine non sono riuscita a capire cosa ci fosse dietro all'omicidio anche se avevo azzeccato uno dei colpevoli. Bella anche la storia d'amore, che è poi quella di una seconda possibilità.

"Following the Trail" is a romantic suspense. I enjoyed that the tracking K9 got to do her thing several times as often K9s turn into pet dogs after their initial job in the story. However, what's the point of having a tracking K9 if you stop tracking the scent of the bad guy the moment he disappears from sight...when tracking would be really useful? (The trail goes through a building, but they know what door was used to exit the building and no effort was made to pick up the trail in the Advanced Reader Copy of this book.)

Anyway, Lacey's father scammed a bunch of people in town, who took out their anger on his family. Lacey was determined to leave her hometown while her boyfriend wanted to stay near his family and friends. They still care for each other, and they discover that they like the more mature versions of each other, too. Creed's more willing to listen to her feelings, and Lacey realizes that the people of the town have largely stopped being angry at her.

The main characters reacted realistically to events, and I cared about what happened to them. Lacey and Creed worked well together and supported each other. The suspense came from someone repeatedly attacking them in an effort to prevent them from discovering the truth behind the murder. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable suspense novel.

Heroine’s father scammed a few town folks and she was person-non-grata that made it impossible to stay. She leaves the man she loves heartbroken and years later she returns to find her missing sister and reunites with Creed (her ex) who helps her investigate.

While I liked the suspense and the couple very much (they were supportive of one another and talked things out), I didn’t feel their romance so much because there was no sex scenes! This was mostly a PG read and I like some smut in my reads.

I was provided an advanced copy of this book by the publisher/author in order to provide an honest review. Thank you for the opportunity!

In Lynnette Eason’s Following the Trail,, the 5th installment in the K-9 Search and Rescue romantic suspense series, this romantic suspense would keep you hook and in suspense from start to finish. It all started for Lacey Jefferson, a K-9 Search and Rescue worker, when she was worried that she haven’t heard back from her sister Fawn. She wasn’t answering her call and believed she might be missing. And that took her and her K-9 dog Scarlett down to her hometown of Timber Creek, North Carolina, a place she haven’t been to in over a decade. To search for Fawn, she requested the help from Creed Payne, the sheriff of Timber Creek, and her former high school boyfriend. Old memories return to the surface of the break-up and how everyone hated her criminal father back then. For Creed, he has a small sheriff’s office in Timber Creek and need a K-9 unit for search and rescue mission. When Lacey retuned back to down requesting his help to look for Fawn, he’d thought of a compelling plan to keep her here with him to lead his K-9 unit. When the search for Fawn turned grim, it was up to Lacey and Creed to search for answers on who wanted her sister dead and why. The closer they’ve gotten to the truth, the most they continued to dig for it while staying out of harm’s way. In the end, would Lacey stay and make a new go at Timber Creek or return back to Charlotte to find her true happiness.

This was a deeply moving and riveting romantic suspense that features K-9 Search and Rescue dogs. That always warms my heart. I cared for Lacey on how she had to go back home to deal with the hurt from the past and stuck to her guns to get to the truth of her sister’s murder. I loved Creed on how he would do anything for Lacey and became a true friend to Scarlett, even by standing in the crossfires of a killer on the loose. I loved how they would thrown together in the mix of things and resolved old hurts from the past to make amends for a brighter future. The location of Timber Creek was idyllic for the scenic settings from Fawn’s home and to the hospital and beyond. The theme of the story is that it’s time to let go of the past to find your future.

This romantic suspense made you want to root for Lacey and Scarlett and cheer them on. I couldn’t find anything to nitpick on the story since it was so good. I rated this book, four out of five stars for no specific reason. If you love heart-stopping romantic suspense novels with plenty of non-stop action, lots of romantic drama, tons of heated suspense, give Following the Lead a read today. This book is recommended for fans who love K-9 centric stories like Margaret Mizushima’s mysteries series, or romantic suspense and thriller novels alike.

Following the Trail is by Lynette Eason. This book is a part of the K9 Search and Rescue series. This book is not as suspenseful as the others and seems to lack enthusiasm. However, it is still good, just slower.
Lacey Lee Johnson has finally come home to Timber Creek, South Carolina. She had only come to her childhood home to see why her sister, Fawn, wasn’t answering her phone calls. It had been five days since she had talked to Fawn which was unusual. She had called the hospital where Fawn worked; but was told Fawn had not been at work. Reluctantly, Lacey now stood in front of the sheriff’s office to see Creed Payne. She hadn’t seen or talked to him since they had broken up six years ago.
Creed was quite surprised to see Lacey when he opened his door. Before he could say anything, his receptionist told him there was an emergency. Five-year-old Hank Gilstrap was missing. Creed told Sherry to call for volunteers to search when Lacey asked about a search and rescue dog. Creed told her they didn’t have one but were going to try to get a crew for themselves. At that point, Lacey volunteered the services of her search and rescue dog, Scarlett. He accepted and they headed for the Gilstrap’s home.
Hank had broken through the screen door and left the property and headed into the woods toward the pond. Scarlet easily followed his scent until she reached Fawn’s house and the shed in back. Not having the keys, they found a spot where a hole had formed. Lacey could fit through, so she went in. She found Hank asleep on a tarp and brought him out. When she got out after handing Hank to Creed, someone took two shots at them. Who was shooting at them and why?
As soon as help arrived, Lacey headed back into the woods towards a spot Scarlett had found on her way to Hank. They turned a log over and found a body. Creed turned the body over and realized it was Fawn. Who killed her and left her in the woods. Why would they do that?

Following the Trail by Lynette Eason is a clean romantic suspense. I am a huge fan of Eason and this book was no exception. She draws you into the mystery from the first pages. I am also a fan of K9 books and Scarlett was such a treat! She had her own personality.

I found the storyline of Lacey going back to her hometown where her dad had conned many of the people out of their money thoughtprovoking. I think I would have felt very similar to Lacey.

When she left town she also left her boyfriend. He is now the chief of police in town. I enjoyed how they worked together to figure things out.

I would highly recommend this book and any book by Eason.

Less churchy. Better plot. More story substance. The first couple of books felt like they were abridged, like I came into the book at chapter 3. Author is getting better. Charlotte (doggo) was more of a supporting role. Could have used more Charlotte.

Ok, but this was good! I loved the pacing, that there was no 'insta-love' between Lacey and Creed, and that though the faith thread was subtle, it was definitely there.
I definitely had all kinds of ideas of 'whodunnit', and while I was right to a limited extent, the whole story of what went down and WHY . . . yeah, that was chilling.
I knew this was part of the K-9 Search and Rescue series, but it is also part of the 'Timber Creek' series, which I am going to go back and make sure is on my radar to read soon!

My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Following the Trail. This is book five in the K-9 Search and Rescue Series. I'm a big fan of Lynette's work. I also like the continuity series. So I was really was glad to get this book. It's well-written, action-packed, and full of suspense. I know you are going to love it.

Search and Rescue Team Officer Jefferson is terrified when she hasn't heard from her sister for five days. She has had enough. She finds out that her sister had taken a three-month leave from her job but no one knows where she is or why she took the leave. Lacey is going to find out what is going on. She goes to her ex for help.

Sheriff Creed Payne can't believe Lacey is back. The woman that laughed at his dream and then left him without a word six years ago. He teams up to help her find her sister. It soon becomes a murder investigation. Can he keep her safe without losing his heart again?

A terrifying journey to find answers before they are killed. God has a plan for these two broken souls, a good plan for hope and a future. God has a plan for you too. a plan for peace and not for destruction. Give Him your heart and watch Him move in your life.

A story that is fast paced and very much exciting.
I loved the mystery that surrounded the whole thing. It was what kept me turning the pages!
I love this author because she keeps you guessing through the whole book.
I can't imagine what Lacey went through but my heart went out to her.
I liked this book in many way because it shows us that people can change after they grow up. Sometimes for the better and sometimes not so good. Either way none of us are perfect and that's what my favorite thing about this story was.
And we can't forget Scarlett! She's amazing!
My favorite character. Dogs are so much like people. They are so intelligent and lovable!
Eason is a gifted story teller. Her books always draw me in from the beginning to end!
I am eagerly awaiting the next one!
My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own.

Following the Trail is the 5th book in the K-9 Search and rescue series. Once again this works fine as a stand alone book. So you can jump right in without reading the first 4 books. I like to read these romantic suspense from this publisher because they are fairly quick reads with good mysteries and sweet romances.

This one follows Lacey and her rescue dog Scarlet. Scarlet is one of my favorite dogs in this series so far. Lacey is searching for her missing sister only to be pulled into a harrowing murder mystery . One that she must solve with the help of her ex-boyfriend, Creed. The msytery was really good. I was hooked from the beginning and was kept guessing. More than that, though I loved the second chance romance between Lacey and Creed. It ended up being really sweet once they were honest and worked through their past issues. I highly recommend this one.

Lacey came back to her hometown looking for her missing sister then come to find her sister had quiet a few secrets and she was apparently taking it to the gave after Lacey come across her body with the help of her K-9. Now Lacey and Sheriff Creed will do everything they can to find out why this happened.

I loved that from the moment this book started there was just something happening one after the other that I just couldn't put this book down. I loved how persistent Lacey was and wasn't about to backdown to anyone when it came to figuring out her sisters secrets. Both sisters were close to Lacey needed to see what was going on and make sure her sisters killer is brought to justice. This was just such a fun read and highly recommend you lovely readers to check it out.

Lacey returns to her hometown to help search for her sister who has gone missing, but the search quickly becomes a murder investigation. Working on the case has her working alongside her ex-boyfriend Creed Payne, can they find the killer before it's too late?

An action packed adventure full of faith, reigniting of past flames, with great characters that I could cheer for from beginning to end. An intense read that had me riveted to the page, I liked that Lacey was able to re-evaluate her life and get a second chance with Creed.

Creed is a good man, and is very supportive of Lacey throughout. I liked this action packed read, it had a twisting plot and was hard to put down.

This is the fifth book in the K-9 Search and Rescue series, but this could easily be read as a standalone novel. I love the inclusion of the dog Scarlett, as their training and skills are are incredible. The main characters are engaging and realistic. The story is a great mix of mystery and romance. I really like the fact that the romance isn't overpowering. Some of the twists weren't a surprise, but it was still an enjoyable story.

Description:
Lacey Jefferson is a K-9 handler. When her sister disappears, Lacey returns reluctantly to her hometown to search for her. Turns out her boyfriend from high school is now Sheriff and sadly, it is no longer a missing person. It’s now murder and someone wants Lacey to join her sister.

Review:
I wanted to love this book. I read and totally enjoyed her recent "Life Flight" and hoped to like this one just as much. But … I didn’t. The pacing was up and down. I could put this book down for hours rather than being pulled back into it. Identifying the protagonist was too easy. I did like the characters but I wasn’t compelled to keep reading to make sure they survived.

Maybe a factor is that each book of this series is written by a different author. Perhaps it’s just harder to write a #5 book in a series when you haven’t written the previous four and lived with those characters for a while.

However, that doesn’t mean that I don’t recommend the book. It’s a nice read. Good happy ending. Nice assortment of characters. Scarlett is nicely depicted on the cover. She is a wonderful search & rescue dog. One of the things I liked most was when she was *not* doing S&R — Scarlett became just a loving, caring “puppy dog” to Lacey.

I hope others like "Following the Trail" more than I did. But I’m still an #LynetteEasonFollower.

I received a complimentary e-ARC copy of "Following the Trail" from the publisher, HARLEQUIN – Romance (U.S. & Canada), Love Inspired Suspense, via NetGalley. A positive review was not required; the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

I wanted to love this book because it had everything from second chance romance to mystery and suspense... but I didn't. I felt like the mystery was very up and down and I was kind of hoping there would be more 'steam' and 'passion' between Lacey and Creed and rekindling their relationship that ended many years prior.

Lacey comes back to her hometown with her K-9, Scarlett, to look for her sister Fawn, whom she hasn't heard from for several days, which is very out of the norm. Her ex-boyfriend, Creed, is the town's sheriff. While Lacey and Scarlett help Creed find a missing boy, Scarlett also happens to sniff out her sister's body, leaving Lacey and Creed to figure out who Fawn's killer is, and why they killed her. Throughout the book while they're searching for answers, the murderer is determined to prevent them from looking and finding the answers to their questions surrounding this mystery.

There were some twists and turns that I wouldn’t have predicted and found really intriguing. Once we found some of the answers about Fawn that Lacey was searching for, I was really blown away and I am still dancing on that line of it being 'believable' or just plain dumb... if Lacey and her sister were that close, how could Fawn have kept all of this from her for so long? The romance between Lacey and Creed was sweet, pretty PG, where I as hoping I would get more of Creed and Lacey in at least a PG-13 setting with more than just a kiss.. but beggars can't be choosers I guess.

Following the Trail by Lynette Eason is a non stop action Love Inspired Suspense Story. This is the 5th book in the K-9 Search and Rescue series. I have not read all the other books in the series, but they can be read as stand alone stories. Lynette Eason is such a talented author. Her books are always packed full of action, heart pounding and will keep you guessing until the very end.
In this one we see Lacey Jefferson’s search for her missing sister. However this quickly turns into a murder investigation. Someone wants Lacey and her search-and-rescue K-9, Scarlett, dead. Lacey has some rocky family history - with her father being a scammer. The only person that she can possibly trust is her ex-boyfriend, Sheriff Creed Payne. Second chance suspense stories are some of my favorites to read. This one will keep you on your toes.
Well written characters, action packed story line, and a all around good rainy day read. It's been rainy in Alabama lately, and I read this in all one sitting. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

Lacey came home to find out what happened to her sister she hadn’t heard from her in days.

Lacey and her search and rescue dog Scarlet came home after six years staying away because she can’t reach her sister. Fawn never goes more than a day without texting or phoning and she isn’t answering any messages or phone calls. This trip home is my frantic way of trying to find out what is wrong. The house is empty and Lacey goes to the local sheriff office for help. There she finds the new sheriff is her long time ago boyfriend Creed. She and Scarlet have to help rescue a missing boy before the sheriff can help her. While hunting for the boy her dog gives the sign of finding a cadaver. She puts off looking closer until after the boy is found. Then they go back to the first spot and find her sister. The mystery is compounded by someone shooting at them and then the clues are not clear. The mystery gets even deeper after the autopsy and two more tries to kill Lacey.
Great action, old romance deep, mystery and mixed homecoming.

Really keeps you guessing

This is a true mystery. Lacey came home to see what happened to her sister, even though she had bad memories from there. Creed is the sheriff in her hometown and her childhood sweetheart. Lacey is a K-9 search and rescue dog trainer, who brought her dog with her. When the search becomes a murder investigation, Creed and Lacey work together. Things are not at all what they seem in this quiet small town. Someone is determined to keep Lacey from finding out what happened to her sister and why!I

The pace is fast and the tone is uncertain yet hopeful with an action and character oriented storyline that has no steam. The characters are vivid and engaging. I am not totally sure how all the books in this series relate, so I don't think that you have to read them in order. If you like action with some Christian praying, no steam and twists and turns, then this is for you! Enjoy!

I have never read a book by Lynette Eason that I did not like, and this one was just as good as anything she writes. Lacey Jefferson has returned to her hometown to check on her sister, Fawn. She escaped her hometown and all of the people her dad robbed, including the hostile whispers and hateful glares. She is a K-9 officer and trainer, so she brings her precious dog, Scarlett, with her. Sheriff Creed Payne is her ex-boyfriend. A little boy is missing. She offers her services to help locate him. During the search she finds a little more than she bargained for. There was great suspense and mystery. I have to admit the ending was jaw dropping. Some may read it and see it, but I never saw it coming! The characters were well written and easy to relate to. This was a story of forgiveness and understanding as well as greed and deception. I almost wanted to shed a tear.

This is another really good Eason search and rescue tale. When Lacey cannot reach her sister, Faith, a physician in South Carolina she puts a hold on her schedule and drives makes the trip to see if she can locate her. Faith is just back to work from a 3 month sabbatical. Suddenly she has stopped coming to work and no one has heard from her. First stop was the old farmhouse the two bought with plans to rehab. No one home, car still there. Next stop the local sheriff's department. Before she can begin to speak with Creed Payne, her old high school love a call comes in with a need for a K-9 rescue. Lacey follows Creed to the scene and pulls out Scarlet, her partner. Together they search for a lost child. This well written search and rescue novel is a terrific rainy day (and into the night) read. Do Enjoy!
