You and me, we’re special. Meaningful. And I know it’s frightening. And hard. But the most rewarding things in life are. They’re scary. And strange. Not easy. But that’s how you know it’s the good stuff.”
Thank you, NetGalley and City Owl Press for providing me with an eARC. This is my honest review.

First, let me start by saying I loved Ms. Turner’s first book. I loved everything about it, from the characters, to her writing, to the story itself. I was so happy to get the ARC for this one because... vampire rock star + clairsentient woman + love story? Sign me up, every time.

“Goddamn, Eve, I’ve shared every corner of my darkness with you. Why can’t you do the same?”
What really worked for me was Jonnie’s character. It may have taken him a while to embrace his vampire self, but it doesn’t take him that long to get in touch with his feelings for Eve. He’s so loving, kind, and so open it’s refreshing. It’s not a coincidence that all my quotes here come from him. I think he really is a wonderful character.

“To hold Eve like he held her in her office, to hold her so that she understood he’d never let her go. Even if she couldn’t return his feelings, he’d still hold her.
He’d love her while expecting nothing in return.”

When it comes to Eve, I just couldn’t fully connect. I understand what she’s been through, I get her doubts and her insecurities, but it just didn’t work for me. Even the compassion she’s supposed to show didn’t feel real to me. It may be an unpopular opinion, I know.

“I love you. Your beautiful, special self.”
“You forgot broken.” (…)
“We’re all broken, love. But sometimes the broken parts fit together.”

They had chemistry together, a lot of it. The sex is steamy, with what I suppose would be considered a kinky element, but I don’t see it as such, I see it as deep trust instead. I just couldn’t feel the love, especially when it came to her feelings for him. Their love story felt rushed to me, and kind of lost its strength among everything else.

I found the first 20% or so of the book to be too descriptive, with nothing much going on, and I think more time could have been spent on their relationship. Bottom line, I needed more romance.

I did enjoy the science/magic part of the book, and I thought it was original. I love that we got to see Brian and Helen from the first book again, and how this book ties in to the first one, even if it is a standalone.

”They were two pieces, he and she, that never fit.
But she did fit. She fit with him, in their own bizarre puzzle. The two of them together sculpted a new whole out of broken, damaged, and cast off parts.”

This was a 2.5 for me. I enjoyed their HEA. She feels toxic and inadequate, he searches for validation. They’re both broken and lonely, even if not alone. They both needed someone to open up to, and to trust, so I’m happy they fit together in the end.

In any case, I’ll be looking forward to more books from Ms. Turner.

The threat of the sophomore slump curse hangs over every second book.
Is the world still exciting? Does this plot connect to the first book's yet have its own flavor and urgency? Does this couple have the same chemistry?

With Blood Sugar, the second installation of the Coven Daughters series, Turner kicked that curse to the curb.

Where the heroine of Hex, Love, and Rock & Roll was a relative newbie to magic, Eve, the heroine of Blood Sugar, has a more solid grasp on her abilities. As a matter of fact, she is all practicality, and has turned hers into a career. Eve employs her affinity for the dead, and works as a funeral home director, helping spirits move on. I adore that her practicality is laced with true compassion and kindness in reassuring souls, and she has a huge amount of guilt over an early soul release supposedly going wrong.

We get another rock god as well (and more tasty British accents), although Jonnie is also a rock star. One cursed with vampirism, and whose goal is sweet talking Eve into helping him pass on to the next world. As attractive as the guy is, her initial response is to shut him down.

But magic is bent on throwing the pair together and their stumbling over a cultish entity bonds them tight as partners. The treatment of magic, science, astrology, and modern celeb-obsessed culture provides a fast-paced backdrop. And the science behind his condition is a truly neat twist on vampire lore.

The chemistry between Eve and Jonnie is there from their first meeting, but both draw the sexual heat out in a slow burn. When they do give in? Explosive.

One of Turner's hallmarks is powerful heroes who are tempered with rich emotional intelligence. Most of Jonnie's reason for become a vampire revolved around helping his sister and ill niece
When Eve is at her lowest, afraid of her power's potential for harm, he stands behind her, giving her the courage to accept herself in a way she'd never felt possible.

Readers can expect Turner's trademark snark mixed with magical and metaphysical mysteries, a well paced plot full of unexpected twists, and two layered and complex characters winning their happily ever after.

Kat Turner, author of Hex, Love and Rock & Roll, has done it again with Book #2 of the Coven Daughters, Blood Sugar.

Eve works as a funeral home director who actually cares about her clientele, and rock-star Jonnie, who also happens to be a vampire, team up to defeat the evil spirit who wishes Eve harm.

Together, Eve and Jonnie are a pair to be reckoned with, and when they get together, the action is hot. Need I say more?

Be prepared for fast-paced action and some incredible magical twists!

Thank you City Owl Press and Netgalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

The premise of the story is that Eve is a clairsentient mortician who is stalked by an angry spirit. She eventually meets a rockstar named Jonnie who wants to cure his vampirism. The unlikely duo work together to solve their own issues while uncovering dark facts about who is really causing a rise in dark magical incidents.

I really liked Eve’s character she was charming and funny and flawed. She felt realistic and relatable. I thought her and Jonnie’s relationship felt a little rushed but I liked them together. Jonnie really balances out Eve and I love that she was initially reluctant to help him. It really helped build the tension. Also even though Jonnie is a rockstar he is down to earth and kind. He cares deeply for his niece and sister and eventually Eve.

I liked how this book took a twist on classic vampire lore and added new science and a modern aspect. How far some celebrities will go to chase the fountain of youth and what is hiding under the surface of these fad procedures. These elements really added a nice mystery to the overall story. I haven’t read the previous book but I didn’t feel that took away from this overall story since they are standalones.

Kat Turner knocks it out of the park with this second installment of the Coven Daughters series, an imaginative twist on the classic vampire tale. Sparks fly between Eve, a clairsentient mortician who can talk to the dead, and Jonnie, the famous undead rock star who asks her to help him pass to the other side. Their off-the-charts chemistry progresses naturally to love scenes that deliver: super steamy with light kink thrown into the mix. Turner’s trademark descriptive and poetic prose takes the reader on an unforgettable journey through Louisville, New Orleans, and Peru, the outstanding paranormal plot laced with elements of horror. A perfectly witchy read!

Blood Sugar is a contemporary paranormal romance novel centered around a young mortician Evelyn (Eve). She not only dresses and makes up cadavers on the cold slab in the funeral home's basement, but she also is a clairivoyant. She is able to speak to ghosts. Eve helps those stuck between this world and the afterlife "move on" so that they may rest in peace. However, her magic does not always work as planned. A few years ago her spell did not work thoroughly as it was supposed to. Meanwhile, she carries on her daily tasks at the funeral home. One night, a ghost named Travis requests her help. The author outlines the general process in which Eve is able to connect with the ghost, conjure light and guide the lost spirit to its final home. This is when she unexpectedly encounters a handsome Brit, a performing artist (musician). Jonnie has a rare condition. He has yet to determine whether he is fully among the living or more aligned with the dead—similar to the ghosts that Eve usually helps. However, Jonnie is full flesh, blood and bone. He is a tall, handsome gentleman who stands before Eve. This is why she initially refuses to assist him. She believes her powers are limited to that of spirits only. Jonnie attempts to explain that his condition was brought on by artificial means with real consequences. It is only after Eve has some time to reconsider that she tries to find Jonnie and see how she may assist him. They are have a natural magnetism between each other. He thinks she is beautiful. She thinks he is quite handsome. Eve listens to the entirety of his story. She has a bit of her own story to share. She mentions that due to her abilities and spiritual gifts, she is stalked wherever she goes. Their relationship progresses naturally but quickly. They both have an uninhibited chemistry that Eve wishes to fully relish in from the beginning. Jonnie is careful. He believes that he is too powerful and if they connect with one another fully, that he may alter some part of her. Eve does not mind, but initially respects Jonnie's decision.

The reader becomes acquainted with Jonnie at three levels. He is the son and brother, caring and worried about his sister's stage 4 cancer. Jonnie does what he is able financially and socially to support his sister's plight. There is Jonnie the rock star/artist. He has had his fill of women in the past, but when he meets Eve, something within him sparks. Jonnie understands that Eve is special. He does not want to hurt her in any way. Eve sometimes misinterprets Jonnie's conduct as rejection until he is able to explain his reluctance with certain matters. As their relationship progresses, it is more than their bodies that become closer to one another. The last primary aspect of Jonnie's life is that of victim. He underwent what some may consider a medical-cosmetic procedure. It alters his blood. Jonnie becomes reliant on "treatments" to stay alive. The same company, which is now part of the black market scene after a law suit, is somehow related to the unrelenting haunting of Eva by the ghost girl. The author uses certain references that the average is likely familiar with such as "Illuminati", Hollywood and "cult" as the primary sources linking certain treatments with celebrities. However, for Jonnie, the treatment has become somewhat of a curse. Snake blood was infused into his and magic used on him which alters his current state. He can see and hear what others do. Jonnie can hypnotize people for moments at a time. He has fangs and at certain times his eyes "shapeshift" to that resembling a reptilian. Jonnie thinks he is some sort of misfit. Yet as he and Eve share more of their backgrounds, they realize they have more in common. They both have powers. Eve mentions that she was the oddity in her family who never fit in, especially due to her supernatural abilities. Yet Jonnie and Eve are the perfect complement to one another. The reader may assume that Jonnie, the rock star, the one who is accustomed to fame and fortune is hesitant to share his innermost thoughts with Eve, but the author outlines their personalities as just the opposite. Eve is more closed off to share with anyone. She has been rejected because of who she is. Eve has a difficult time trusting others. Jonnie is patient even when she tries to reject him because he knows she is scared and does not mean what she says in those moments. He displays tenderness in her moments of vulnerability as does she. Yet, Jonnie and Eve's relationship is also full of passion. They share intimacy quite often. When they finally consummate their relationship, without the use of contraceptive, they easily share more with one another. Jonnie's essence has penetrated Eve. She feels a surge in her powers. Jonnie can sense it. They are forever connected.

However, Jonnie and Eve know that they must find help to sustain him. They take a trip to Peru where they find an isolated community full of practitioners of magic and healing. Jonnie and Eve meet a pregnant blonde woman named Taylor who is the point of contact for help. She and her husband initially refuse them. The author seems to reference this cycle of rejection as in the beginning Eve refused to help Jonnie, the stranger. Also, when Eve was ready to be fully intimate with Jonnie the first time, he did not allow it in order to protect her. Eve felt rejected until he explained what his powers could possible do to her. Jonnie is able to obtain a plant based substitute for the treatments he usually purchased for his condition while in the United States. Jonnie has begun to heal, just as he and Eve heal each other. Nonetheless, Taylor is a water diviner and explains to Eve that because she belabours in earth, they can work together to locate the ghost-girl, Lacey, and remove the negative attachment that is associated with her and causing her to haunt Eve. Poignantly, their new found help states;

“Right. Earth and death are related, as you of course know. The body returns to the earth, the
soul flies away. As above, so below.” Taylor pointed up, then down.

While Jonnie is at bay, Eve and Taylor perform a ritual. Eve seems to be drowning as she confronts Lacey's ghost underwater. Lacey threatens Eve's family if the mortician does not obtain drops of Jonnie's vampire blood. Eve finally agrees as she hears Taylor's voice calling for her, ready to pull her back above. After Jonnie and Eve return from Peru, he has an accident in the kitchen which provides a perfect opportunity for Eve to obtain the blood. She never tells him that she needed it or what it was for as she only kept the bandage from which she initially wrapped his cut hand with. Eve attempts to distance herself from Jonnie in order to protect him. Jonnie will not allow it. He promises he will contact her in a week. During this time, Eve keeps her word to Lacey and finds her parents' home. Eve enters an unrefined and unkempt home. She believes she is doing a service to right the mishap of the events from Lacey's passing. Her rude mother leads Eve to the backyard. Eve is confused. She asks for a small trinket or item Lacey owned in order for her to pass fully from this life in peace. The truth is revealed by the conniving mother. She used her daughter. Lacey's death was a mishap. Lacey's ghost was angry. However, Lacey's ghost also tricked Eve in bringing Jonnie's blood. Her mother was to transform Lacey into a vampire in order to use her blood to feed the snakes that they incorporated the venom into patients/subjects blood for their "procedure". The ritual used on Lacey when she was in the Hollywood cult to kill her and bring her back to life as a vampire failed. She was to be the continuous source of vampire blood used to feed the snakes who grew exponentially and provided the special venom. A continuous cycle of bleeding and feeding had the magical experiment on Lacey worked. After Eve continues to prod Lacey's mother for answers by threatening her son, she admits that her project was that of a big corporation, the very one that rebranded itself with affiliates and subsidiaries. It was the very company where Jonnie received his initial procedure from.

Eve and Jonnie reunite with Meg, Eve's friend. Jonnie is candid about his relationship with Eve, placing Meg in shock. He also discloses his condition and the intimacy he and Eve share on both an intimate and esoteric level. Meg shows a clip of Lacey's mother on a pseudo news program. She pretends that she is the victim and that some corporation is genetically modifying humans using reptilian blood, making monsters cloaked in human flesh. After the clip ends, Eve tells Jonnie and Meg more of her trip to Susan Mudd's home. Lacey's mother is now attempting to blackmail the very corporation she works for. The same company that she was willing to sacrifice her daughter who suffered a ruinous and untimely death.

After Eve remembers a book that she shows to Jonnie and Meg, they decide that the frontman for Jonneie's band (Frye), Brian's wife would have answers. Helen had a similar book. She was also a witch. The author ties in Jonnie and Eve's visit with an earlier mention of how Brian and their former band manger parted ways over artistic differences. The manager died. Brian now reveals what the former manager's scheme was:

Brian hissed out a ragged breath. “They wanted me to consent to my own murder at the hands of this entity they had in their thrall. Then, as best I could surmise, they’d have a better shot of guiding their demon into my body, to possess me. So I’m easier to control, a more profitable singing, dancing monkey. And, ideally, immortal.”

Brian refused to be a part of the scheme. As Brian and Jonnie discuss the underground plot between the use of demons and magic, the lead guitarist reveals the overall agenda of those in control of show business:

Light flashed in Jonnie’s brain. His thoughts raced. “That’s the agenda.”
“What’s the agenda?”
“To make a race of immortals. To synthetically engineer beings who will live forever. First, they gain control of the body through procedures like mine. Then they claim the mind. That’s where the possession element comes into play. So we’re pliable drones they can pilot, control. Living, breathing ATM machines that they can bend to their will.” Jonnie’s speech sped to a rapid spray of bullets as it struggled to keep up with his sparking mind. “How did you break free?”
“Helen. She used her magic. Saved my life.”

Helen who is Brian's wife. Helen who is also a witch. The author foreshadows that Helen who may be able to show Eve how to save Jonnie's life as well. Eve figures out that major corporations use harnessed magic to increase their companies viability. She pushes Jonnie away because of she collected his blood without informing him. Jonnie has an idea to use his blood to save his niece. Eve is kidnapped but is able to save herself from Lacey's mother. Jonnie arrives in time to unbound her. They return home. All their vulnerability is open. All of who they are, broken pieces and faults they accept fit perfectly with one another. They are to remain together because of it.

Blood Sugar is a novel of magical realism and paranormal contemporary romance. The author uses a lot of descriptive narrative in between scenarios and the story keeps an exciting and steady pace once Jonnie and Eve travel to Peru. This book contains graphic scenes that is not suitable for certain ages.

As a funeral directors daughter - Eve our spirit guide mortician charmed me from page one!

But seriously, this book was fantastic! I loved Hex, Love, and Rock & Roll but I LOOOOOOOVED this vampire romance follow up! I adored Eve and Johnny, and following their own journeys to battles their inner (and not so inner???) demons. It’s the perfect example of how we can have the hot and sexy romance with a hot vampire rock and roll star while also digging deep into their characters and going on a paranormal and spooky adventure.

It connects us back to our original couple, but completely stands on its own.

Blood Sugar is as sexy and thrilling as it is dark and chilling. It’s perfect for people ready to dive into the Halloween season and be romanced at the same time.

Also- zombie squirrel.

I loved everything about Jonnie. He isn’t a typical vampire but he is all Brit and man. Kat Turner’s Blood Sugar has perfect chemistry between Eve and Jonnie and I couldn’t put the book down when they were on the pages together. I would recommend this book to anybody who likes their romances heated, is a fan to the paranormal and likes a great chemistry between the h/h.

Filled with magic, hot, hot, hot romance, loveable characters, and a brilliant take on vampires, Blood Sugar is a must-read! Fans will fall in love and cheer for Eve and Jonnie from the get go and will be left breathless by the end. I also loved getting to see Helen and Brian as well. In Blood Sugar, Kat Turner creates the most unique and fascinating take on the “vampiric condition” that upturns everything you think you know about the Children of the Night. Speaking of which, Jonnie, the rocker vampire in question is the stuff of steamy dreams. Lucky, Eve, a sassy mortician with a special otherworldly gift herself, pairs up with Jonnie on a twisty quest through lush locations. While Jonnie and Eve battle their own nightmares as a team, some old friends from Turner’s Hex, Love and Rock and Roll make a welcome appearance in the story. Blood Sugar, the second book in the Coven Daughters series is an intoxicating read.

Hot Sweaty Nights Witch Crisp Cool Days

This 2nd book in the Coven Daughter series is even better than the 1st one. We get to see another Chariotz of Frye member fall in love with an unusual woman. Their romance is one that should go down in history. There's a different type of magic in the air as we follow the couple through happy and turbulent times. You don't want to miss all the love and excitement Kat Turner bring us in Blood Sugar. I can't wait for the next book in this series to see where the story goes from here!

Blood Sugar is an inventive take on vampire lore and a deeply interesting read. Kat Turner’s style, pacing, and lush descriptions kept me wanting more (even through some gut wrenching scenes!) The characters experience such emotion and turmoil it’s impossible not to feel for them and want to know what will happen to them next. A very solid second installment to the Coven Daughters series. I can’t wait for the next!

I admit to not reading book#1 in this series, but was easily able to slide in at book #2 and engage in this pre-built world without issue.

We join Eve, a funeral director who has the gift of being able to set souls to rest. There's some extra stuff she gets with that, hearing them, feeling responsible for them, occasionally making mistakes that end up sentencing them to a horrible afterlife, etc. It's this last bit that has her in a fragile state when Jonnie approaches her. You see, he believes he is turning into a vampire. Somehow work of her gifts got to his stage crew and he hunted her down (ya know, like a vampire).

His anti-aging treatment is definitely doing something to him, but Even doesn't exactly jump at the chance to try to help him. It takes some convincing, but they end up on a grand adventure to figure out how his "ailment" may tie in to her fouled up soul issue. Along the way we get a healthy dose of dirty, smutty, goodness, some other paranormal folks, lots of questionable choices, and ultimately a happy ending. The witchy aspects of this appear to tie in to the larger series storyline, so I'm sure you get a little more out of the other characters if you started from book 1, but I managed just fine.

Blood Sugar is the second book in the Coven Daughters series.

Eve is a mortician who assists souls pass on from spirit life, while simultaneously being stalked by a poltergeist. She’s approached by a rock star who has been turned into a vampire. Johnnie seeks out Eve for her talents in sending spirits to rest. He doesn’t want to be a vampire and could really use her services. After an initial refusal, Eve seeks Johnnie out and they pair up to rid her of the poltergeist and find a way to cure Johnnie’s vampirism. What a journey they take!

Kat Turner has written a fantastic paranormal romance with likable characters and a remarkable story. I enjoyed Eve and Johnnie, and their quest to eliminate the evil spirit stalking her while finding a way to reverse his vampire tendencies. The author’s writing is vivid without becoming overpowering or filled with fluff. I look forward to the next book.

I won’t repeat the book description here, since it’s accurate. This book was amazing. First, this is an adult fantasy with vampire and death plot lines that are unsuitable for young readers. The book is very frightening at times and the story is complex with violence and sex scenes. Second, the writing is amazing. It felt like music. The story lines, sentence structure and descriptive writing rise and fall with their own rhythms. Descriptions grab and pull the reader into the story. Characters feel real. The reader will worry about them, gasp and need to keep reading to find out what happens to them next. This book doesn’t end with a forever-HEA, but a for-now-HEA that is still satisfying. A truly original author! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Eve and Jonnie's Story . . .

Eve Conley-Adyemi works as a funeral home director who can speak with the dead. Eve is being stalked by an angry spirit. When Jonnie Tollens, a rock star, comes to see her to ask her to help end his undead existence as a vampire, she refuses; but they team up to defeat the evil spirit who wishes Eve harm, as well as attempt to actually cure Jonnie’s vampirism.

As they fall in love, their chemistry is sizzling. They also find out lots of information on who is behind the things that are happening and tie together both Jonnie and Eve’s issues they are trying to resolve. Will they find a cure for Jonnie? Will they survive the battle with the greedy company?

This story is the second book in the Coven Daughters series and is dealing with another member of Fyre.

Now I must say that while this book can be read alone, I'd highly recommend reading them in order.

We get another God of music, Johnnie has been turned into a vampire. And he goes to speak to Eve because he has heard of her work with the dead. Magic is inherent in all of the stories about the women who get involved with this band. And I loved the Chemistry between Johnnie and Eve. I'm not sure if it reached the same level as in her first book, but I do have to say that her men are highly intelligent and emotionally involved with their female counterparts.

Great job for the second book in this series and I simply can't wait to see what happens next!

I hadn’t read book 1 in this series which I’m disappointed about but what I find with this series is that there are different characters for each book but what I love is the paranormal and rockstar romance together separately they are great but together it makes my day. This is the story of Eve who is a Clairsentient Mortician and Jonnie is a vampire rockstar he wants Eve to end his life but Eve won’t she has enough problems with this angry ghost stalking her but I will let you find out what happens for yourself. Fantastic story I loved it and the characters and I highly recommend this book it’s well worth the read.

This book offers a unique take on vampires. There were several parts of the book that I enjoyed, however others I did not like. One of the parts I liked was Jonnie’s character development, he grew and accepted a new path forward. The story has a lot of details, for me it was way too many. The large amount of very descriptive scenes made it difficult for me to keep focused on the plot, especially the first 20-30%. The fact that vampires were being created medically and magical twist kept me reading. It is worth taking the time to read, give it a try

As much as I enjoyed the book one in coven daughter series , hex , love , rock and roll , which was exceptional and set a very unreachable benchmark , that this book didn't reach. It was bland when it comes to the emotions , Jonnie was amazing , but eve felt toxic and inadequate.A balance of emotions between both the characters would have made the book much more interesting. The plot was very good and exciting , if given a few emotions to the mix , it would be an amazing read. Keeping in mind book one , can't wait to read the next book in the series

I wish I had read the first book because I feel like I missed some important things. I enjoyed the book but I will need to read the first to put this in better context. It was slow in some areas and great pace at others. I loved being able to visit Peru in this book because I’ve been there and loved it.

The characters were good and fleshed out but I was still left wanting more. I will revisit this review after I read the first book and this one again!

Wonderfully steamy paranormal romance. Eve is a witch who helps souls pass on and Jonnie is a rockstar who became a vampire. Together they are unbeatable if they could both just get out of their own way, well mostly Eve! The romance was steamy, the witchy/haunting/vampire parts were imaginative and intriguing and the protagonist threatening evil empire was inspired. loved it !!! love this series !!! love Eve and Jonnie... this is their story... a fast paced action packed drama... vampire rock and roller and a mortician...sounds like a really bad joke...but is a really good story.. with twists and turns... supernatural beings and more...

A big thank you to NetGalley and City Owl Press for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This was an enjoyable read. Different from the beginning. It felt fresh and I liked all the characters. Eve has an interesting job and Jonnie well read to find out. Instant attraction 4 stars

Jonnie and Eve sizzle together. I was excited to read about another Fyre member's story and the twist is *chef's kiss*.
