It's been a million billion years since my last review (or even since I read these chapters). Also known as 6 months in 2020 time. But I'm here now. So here's a review.

I don't fully understand what's going on with Hot Pants' presentation of gender. Is she supposed to be a woman deliberately posing as a man? A butch woman mistaken for a man? A trans man? Non-binary? It probably makes more sense in Japanese, where she apparently speaks with a male dialect. At the very least, she's a masc nun. So there ya go.

Either way, her motivation is very understandable. Feeling guilt over the loss of her brother, she turns to religion. Both to make sense of the senseless and to assuage her own guilt. The religious connotation is transparent; the only way to escape your guilt is to literally wash it away with holy water. I’m consistently blown away by the way Araki uses religion in his story. If you’re a Christian, you’ll likely come away feeling that your religion was respectfully portrayed. But if you’re critical of Christianity, you’ll likely find plenty to critique. The story portrays the role Christianity plays in the lives of many Americans (particularly in the 1800’s) and leaves judgment up to the reader.

Civil War is a cool stand in that it gets the reader to think about just how much they dispose of in their lives. So many objects are made to be used up and disposed of. As a society, we produce so much trash and mindlessly throw away things. This is beyond the point of the stand, but it’s worth thinking about just how much we get rid of that could be avoided. Next time you go to the grocery store, think about just how much stuff you buy that comes in disposable packaging. eggs, beverages, shampoo. Even pre-packaged food. All of this stuff could come to the store in bulk and be distributed into reusable packaging that people bring back to the store for refills. This is all aside from the point of the stand.

The stand itself poses the question of whether people need to be disposed of in order to progress. Hot Pants would never have become a nun if she hadn’t “disposed” of her brother. Johnny wouldn’t be where he is if he hadn’t “disposed” of his brother, or if his father hadn’t “disposed” of him. Indeed, it seems like the only path forward is for Johnny to discard of whatever enemy stands in his way. Looking at the loss of Johnny’s brother is trying to rationalize sudden loss as a meaningful choice after the fact. But the question legitimately stands when applied to Hot Pants’s brother and Axl’s town.

I love the direction Johnny is going in. He’s already shown a brutal willingness to discard whatever is necessary to advance. But the plot has never been so critical of his as when he tried to destroy the corpse of Jesus Christ. My memory may be failing me, but I can’t think of many of his opponents who have had selfish motivation. In this volume alone, Axl is trying to absolve himself of the greatest mistake of his life. Meanwhile, Johnny is actively trying to destroy any hope either of them have for a better life. I can’t wait to see where this goes.

JOHNNY HOLY FRICK

Memes in this volume:

Awww :)

Gyro: "These are my steel balls!"

Johnny got cake

I couldn't find a pic of it but in one panel Johnny's vision of Danny jumps and the mouse says "jump" in a speech bubble and it's glorious

JESUS?

JESUS??

Jesus tells Johnny to shoot himself with his fingernails

In regard to thematics the idea of 覚悟 within the context of jojo’s has always been particularly appealing to me. Although I don’t think there is a direct translation to English, it was especially apparent within this volume. I have always found it inspiring within the series when characters find their resolve and are able to overcome some greater hurdle.
I think another aspect of this is shown when イエス tells Johnny 迷うならうつな I think this roughly translates to “don’t shoot if you don’t know your way” there probably is a shorter translation but that is beyond me. I think this tackles this same theme well as it seems to imply that you shouldn’t take action until you have found your own resolve.
For me this hits home for personal reasons but I think this is something a lot of people can relate to.

Series: Steel Ball Run #15
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

The 7th part of the race has just started and there are only three more check-ins left before the race is over. There are only 61 racers left out of the 3,000+ that started the race. Johnny and Gyro are camping out and see Hot Pants racing off into the night and decide to follow. They track her to a church where they run into a new stand and stand user. Axel Ro and his stand Civil War were very interesting. Civil War traps people with the guilt of the things they have discarded in life, whether it be people or things. Gyro and Hot Pants are quickly trapped but Johnny repels the attacks with water and fights the stand.

After seeing Gyro take the front seat in the previous battle against Wekapipo it was nice seeing Johnny step up and defeat a stand user on his own. Johnny and Axel Ro’s fight was very interesting and unique. Axel uses Johnny to kill him basically to free himself of his sins and to trap Johnny with the physical embodiment of his sins, i.e. all the people he had killed, so he can take the corpse legs that Johnny had sin free. It was very interesting and I am unclear as to why he had to be sin free to take the legs because Johnny wasn’t, nor is the President. Johnny eventually uses the golden rectangle to defeat Axel twice really and stop him from taking the corpse body, which is almost completely assembled. Unfortunately the president swoops in and steals it right at the end of the battle.

I am really interested in seeing what will happen next now that the president has the majority of the corpse parts. Also, I am very curious to see what is happening with Lucy, her actual husband, and Wekapipo.

TW: death of a sibling; survivors guilt and grief; gun violence and death

It was cool to learn more about Hot Pants' backstory but the utilitarian purpose the reveal served in the plot was disappointing. I hope that she can get more personal development later in the story. The Civil War fight, like some others I recently reviewed, was much clearer upon a second viewing. It was cool to see Johnny's character development in this fight.

Every time I think this series can't get anymore buckwild I am proven wrong. Things Johnny Joestar did in this volume:
1. Die and come back to life
2. Get ripped limb from limb by ghosts
3. Be spoken to by Jesus????
4. Turn his entire body into a spiral ala Uzumaki to escape the ghosts
5. Die and come back to life AGAIN but this time on purpose
6. Decide to kill the president

Anyway this might be my favorite series of all time ever.

I needed a break and wanted to resume the series anyway

This is by far my favorite season of Jojo. The powers are pretty unique but sometimes the solution or a victory seems a bit deus ex machina sometimes. The fight against Civil War, however, made sense to me. Nice addition to Johnny's powers too.

4 estrellas.

the battles just get better and better!! I also enjoyed the theme of guilt and sacrifice, very on par with the characters knowing their backstories. It was also a very clear turning point for Johnny and I’m very excited to see how he’ll progress moving forward !

By far my favorite volume so far, civil war has been my favorite enemy stand and there is such a clever fight back from Johnny. The end shows everything him and gyro have worked for slip away in the last 4 pages of the volume which is now a crazy set up for the rest of the series
