“THE ASSASSIN’S CHOICE” Mere months ago, OCHI OF BESTOON was the assassin who dared to take on DARTH VADER himself in the fiery lava pits of MUSTAFAR. Also featuring the next great reveal about BOKKU and the Hutt Council!
Greg Pak is an award-winning Korean American comic book writer and filmmaker currently writing "Lawful" for BOOM and "Sam Wilson: Captain America" (with Evan Narcisse) for Marvel. Pak wrote the "Princess Who Saved Herself" children's book and the “Code Monkey Save World” graphic novel based on the songs of Jonathan Coulton and co-wrote (with Fred Van Lente) the acclaimed “Make Comics Like the Pros” how-to book. Pak's other work includes "Planet Hulk," "Darth Vader," "Mech Cadet Yu," "Ronin Island," "Action Comics," and "Magneto Testament."
Weakest Vader in years!! Not about Vader at all. That comic is part of the War of The Bounty Hunters which is a crossover between many Star Wars issues and a series in itself, but like many, I don't follow it, and here we find ourselves deep in a series we don't follow because we just want to continue a series we do. That is a bad marketing job in my opinion. Crossover can be great, but it's very time consuming to read all the comic so you often loose a bunch of readers as well. Anyway, didn't like it, didn't need to be in the Vader run!
Both the art and the writing are top notch. Vader’s presence is felt throughout the comic, despite him not being physically present for much of it. Instead a plot is woven which, on the surface, seems to be about finding out who Bokku the Hutt is working with. However, this story isn’t really about testing Bokku’s loyalties, it’s about testing the loyalties of Ochi of Bestoon. After all, he was originally hired to kill Vader, so it’s understandable that Vader would want to test him to find out if he can really trust him…or, at least, rely on him to be loyal.
As I said, the writing is great, as it has been throughout Pak’s run, and Ienco doesn’t fail to deliver artistically either. The cover art by Aaron Kuder also feels suitable iconic.
This book has been consistently excellent and this issue is no exception.

”Are you familiar with my Master? Do you know what he does? He cannot be defeated!”
2,5/5!
This was definitely one of the weakest issues of this series so far.
I'm not the biggest fan of Ochi of Bestoon and his partnership with Vader, and I feel like the series has already gotten everything it can out of Ochi as a character. He has not really developed, and I've struggled to remain interested in him, which is why this issue wasn't for me at all: it was all about Ochi, his loyalties and his relationship with Vader. Unfortunately nothing about this issue revealed anything about Ochi, and I don't feel like I got anything new or exciting from it.
It's baffling how unimpressed I have been with this series lately, considering how much I adored the first story arc. Greg Pak can write some great, intense stuff, and I hope this series will pick up again soon!
Not a strong book in an otherwise strong series. Hate to say it but Pak has never known what to do in Star Wars. Might as well have called this Ochi of Bestoon. Also, whereas most of the War of the Bounty Hunters has been chronological, this went comparatively way backin the timeline if events. I understand that him showing up was a surprise, but that was over a month ago. This issue should have come out following War of the Bounty Hunters #2. Marvel, it's a bad sign when the Darth Vader story is weaker than the Valance and Dengar story. Please get another author. Donny Cates. Johnathan Hickman. Chip Zdarsky. Anyone else.
4.25 out 5 stars. This was a cracking comic that sheds light on the Bounty Hunter event which may lead some to dislike it. I've enjoyed that event too but this shed a bunch of light on the series and was very well executed by Pak. Best Vader writer since Marvel took over the licence. Can he keep it up?
Naaaah this ain't it. Art & story not up to par...What is going on with this event??? Too mediocre and feels super rushed. Shadows of the Empire was much better "Canon."
