About the author

Heather Relken

I've been writing since 7th grade and have always had a love for all things fantasy! My grandpa introduced me to Zelda and Lord of the Rings, and from there my interests just expanded! I developed a love for culture and anthropology, for linguistics and biology, and slowly I've managed to puzzle piece together that perfect blend of interests into something I believe makes my writing unique, vivid, and out of this world!

That's the goal, at least ;]

I love my writing most when I'm able to showcase the coming together of two separate cultures and how those cultures would clash and interact. I love showing language barriers, subverting expectations, and toying with social taboo. Sometimes I use these in a strictly fantasy setting, but my truest passion is when I'm able to let loose and really flex my worldbuilding in the science-fiction universe instead! I never seem to get away from the romance genre, though, because I feel like the world could always use a little more love <3

Let me preface by saying this guy's personality is a hoot. He's so aristocratic - so bougie. But it fits him well.

I may be biased because I enjoy this author. Her other books work well for the typical sci fi reader (they expect certain things and will more than likely get it with how she writes and her themes). When I found out she was branching to dark, I jumped on that (as fast as I could).

I love all things dark. Ya feel?

In her other works, the world and storyline shone. In this book, I really thought it was the characters that made the story. I enjoyed watching their dynamic grow - the male character's layers finally unfolding around the 50% mark.

There was a slight lul in the middle, but that's okay. Miss Relken is known for her MASSIVE world-building. At times (more than once) I asked myself if I was truly reading a first person POV story because it felt like third. Whether that's a good or bad thing, is up to the reader.

For all you consensual loving people, this book is definitely for you.

I really look forward to seeing what else she has in store for us - to see how far she will push out of her comfort zone because I truly believe that her potential for darkness is just hidden under the surface of hardened ground, just waiting to bloom and flourish.

4 stars. I rank this book IVORY on my darkness scale.

This is a beautifully written fantasy romance full of very lyrical prose with some excellent world-building you can always rely on this author for that and there’s no question she can write.

Out of the three books I’ve read by this author though this was my least favourite I still enjoyed it and appreciated the extensive work this must have entailed but I also thought the writing style used was so very different from the previous two books I have enjoyed previously. I wasn’t completely sold on this different approach but I imagine it’s more to do with the genre change and this one being a fantasy read. I did feel I was reading an entirely different author with this and I tend to stick to certain writers when I find a style I gel with so this threw me off slightly. Honestly, if I hadn’t known it was the same author I’d never have guessed it felt that different.

Story-wise this was very imaginative with some brilliant ideas this is a fantasy world filled with magic that is wielded through a chosen source. The anti-hero here is Kour or Crane as he is known back home he’s a Drow a dark elf and takes his power through the blood of others he’s also a torturer and executioner for hire for whoever is willing to pay his fee and Malah, unfortunately, has first-hand experience of his methods. Still with her life in peril and her abusive husband's blood now literally on her hands he’s the only person she can call for help striking a deal with the only bargaining chip she possesses her own life-blood.

Crane is an enigma he has closed himself off over the years to romantic entanglements unwilling to make himself vulnerable. He deals in cold hard logic and fact and does nothing for free or that doesn’t benefit him in some way. His moral compass is very wonky he’s done terrible things and lost little sleep over them but rather than being black or white he’s more of a grey and it’s obvious he has a soft spot for Malah even if he lies to himself over it.

Malah is a wood elf with little magic she definitely evolves over the course of this her experiences and the abuses she has suffered assisting in forging her a backbone of pure steel. Her encounters with Crane only further evolve her as she slowly morphs into her true potential.

So as I said earlier this is highly imaginative with some fantastic world-building it has a whole lot going for it in that department and I would read it for that alone. negatives for me well I found the extensive explanations on magic and all of the information imparted here at times too much there was just so much data and names that I got a little bored and also turned around slightly. The intimate stuff could also be over-explained and over-complicated and sometimes felt very clinical. I also don’t want to listen to the hero comparing his own Techniques even internally to himself on other women while pleasuring the heroine there should be only one thing on his mind at this particular time and that’s not it. I also wasn’t entirely convinced of the romantic feelings but I did like both main characters. The writing style also wasn’t an easy fit for me I much prefer the author's style in previous works but do understand this is fantasy so was authentic to the setting.

This had action, darkness, passion and romance it could be a little slow in places but the finish here more than made up for it and that was spectacular indeed. It’s told from a multitude of views but mostly Malah and Crane so you do get an insight into their inner psyche. There are some slight triggers nothing major really the only biggie I would say may be an issue is in the last quarter of this Malah is attacked even then it’s not gratuitously explained and the triggers are labelled so you could technically skip if inclined. Darkness wise for me this was only a light grey.

On a side note, I was hoping to leave with one more piece of crucial information that wasn’t given here. I understand the message was that it didn’t matter either way but I wanted to know all the same trying to be obscure as this one is a spoiler but come on couldn’t it have been included in an epilogue. It’s so going to bug me now.

I’m definitely still going to be reading this author's work again and though this wasn’t all roses for me it still had many more positives than negatives. I enjoyed it mostly and did finish and I would recommend it for all those out there who like elaborate fantasy romance with a heavy emphasis on the world itself and particular attention to detail also for those of you who like a more lyrical writing style.

Heather Relken’s mind is a place I want a permanent residence in.

She created a world and characters that were not only believable, they were truly alive!

Relken grips you from the start. Right out the gate, this book grabs you in a frantic way. Malah killed her husband, and now she has to survive through the mess she landed herself in. From there, you are submerged deep into the story wondering if she will get away unscathed and remain hidden.

Heather makes you sympathize with the main character even with little background on Malah. Not only that, but there is a way she presents Crane that makes you love and hate him right away. As a reader, you are routing for him to do the right thing, but you also want him to be the anti hero that he is. I truly respect that Relken could capture an anti-hero in a way that captivates your attention early on; even questioning your impression of him as a reader throughout the book. I remember asking myself multiple times, “Should I really be liking him this much, or am I supposed to hate him?” In the end, I fell in LOVE with him. Anti-Heros are the new Prince Charmings after all!

I also like that we get glimpses from some of the other characters, as Relken includes chapters from their POVs. It allowed the other characters to shine in their own chapters giving a foreshadow to the story most times. But I personally lived for Crane’s POVs. The innerworkings of how a blood-magic-wielding-torture’s brain worked was mesmerizing and if it were possible, I would choose to have the whole book from his side. He was always thinking ahead, and the gears never stopped for a second when trying to solve a problem.

There is also a nice dynamic between Malah and Crane. They both come across as having feelings for one another, even if they question it a few times, but it’s never a pesky reminder. It’s a breath of fresh air having this type of relationship in a book. You know they are right for each other and Relken does it so subtly, that you hardly notice the character’s falling in love, it just grows naturally. It’s truly a dark friends to lovers type trope.

The plot itself was twisted and flowed the way a book should. I never felt lost or confused or bored. I just wanted more when I reached the last page. And that’s the amazing thing about Relken’s book. You crave more of the way she creates this atmosphere as you fall in love with every aspect of Decadent Sins. The characters have you raptured, the world pulls you deep into its roots, and the story will make you a fan of her work.

Decadent Sins gets 5 stars from me! It’s a long-dark-bloody-love story that I think will stand the test of time. Heather Relken’s writing is my own Decadent Sin I can go back to time and time again, indulging in every word. I can’t wait to watch her grow as an author and sink my teeth into her other works.

an instant favorite for me! Any fans of dark romance with morally dark gray (maybe more aptly dark blood red?) male leads should 100% pick this book up NOW. Crane is such a unique character, I love him to pieces. He is dark, deliciously high class, fantastically witty and unapologetically bloodthirsty. He is always thinking 10 steps ahead, weighing every choice he makes with cold calculation. Its so interesting to watch how his dark mind works, and even more fun to see the slow, small ways he softens to our main girl. I could go on and on about him, he is one of the most real and intriguing male characters I've read.

And the magic system is so different! I loved learning about it, and watching it work, I don't know how Relken conceptualized it, but its great!

Overall, a great story with tension through out, an amazing romance carried by interesting and dynamic characters.

Sometimes it takes something darker than good to defeat what is truly evil

I loved every minute of reading this book. It’s on my list of favourite books which I will read time and time again.

This book is a standalone dark paranormal romance with descriptive scenes of murder, torture and scenes of a sexual nature. There is a trigger warning for child endangerment and another for rape of an adult woman. It is within the context of the book and is essential to the story. Be warned. Here be monsters.

Malah is a reluctant Princess, forced into marriage with an abusive Prince and living under the despotic rule of his father, the King; a ruler who tortures and kills his people on a whim. Life is not sacred in his kingdom.

Malah is treated as a pariah in his castle, with no one to talk to and no one turn to, so after accidentally killing her husband during one of his bouts of rage, her only option is to call upon the man her husband had frequently paid to torture her. He takes her, for a price and she hides with him in fear for her life, hoping her past doesn’t catch up with her.

When your enemy has dark magic at their disposal, just how long can you remain hidden?

This is a story of a fight for survival. Of finding home and family in the most unexpected of places. Of love born from pain and torment. Sometimes it takes something darker than good to defeat what is truly evil.

This book is full of suspense and so well written. I've been glued to this story. Malah came across as resourceful and intelligent. Her character continued to grow throughout the story. Crane, her unplanned love interest, is a dark man; morally grey and increasingly devoted to her. He reminds me a little bit of Loki and I love that. The many tense scenes were perfectly paced and I read them with a healthy dose of trepidation!

This is the first book I’ve read by Heather Relken but I guarantee it definitely won’t be the last. She’s straight into my list of favourite authors. I’ve already started on her back catalogue.

Heather has the ability to world build in such detail its like you're immersed into the fantasy world and its as real as your own. Her attention to detail evokes all your senses.

I loved every seconds reading this book there literally wasn't an element to it I didn't love, it's the type of book you will be able to pick up and read time and time again

A decadant dark lover affair where the torturer becomes the saviour and lover of our damaged, broken FMC Malah. She may be broken and beaten down repeatedly but she has an inner strength and light that not many do. Her journey is not for the faint hearted but she is a surviver that helps to bring about change. The relationship that grows between Malah and Crane is nothing short of exquisit and they form a soul deep bond that takes root without them even realising.

Crane (Kour) is a blood magic user and is a torturer for hire, which is how he first meets Malah... when her husband summons Kour to torture her to teach her a lesson. Crane began to develop feelings for Malah even then, so when she called him to help get her to safety he promises to help and protect her. Crane goes through his own journey to keep Malah safe per his word, which is his bond. He battles his own demons, the most poignant is, is he worth of love and in most peoples opinion he isn't but Malah thinks differently.

There is so much darkness in their world, such much wasteful death and so many different kinds of magic. Their story is about finding love in the darkness, of over coming true evil and the fight for freedom from repression.

This book has darkness, steam, redemption arcs, truly evil characters and love... pick it up today!

I spent a good deal longer with this book than I intended. Life, ya know?

A thoroughly realized, fleshed out fantasy romance. Definitely on the darker spectrum. However the darkest darks had lightest lights so that you didn’t get bogged down in the ich. I found the hero Crane delightful in his Deadpool-esque, break the fourth wall narrative. Malah was definitely a mouse, but grew a lot into herself by the end of the book. I loved the whole book more than I care to admit. Crane’s demands for consent were sexy as fuck. Just overall a solid read. I’m so glad I bought it!

I received this book for free and I'm writing an honest review.

Wow. Decadent Sins is very detailed. I mean.. very.. very detailed 😏
I was scared to read a long fantasy book, because there's usually so many reasons, why I wouldn't like it.
But this book was perfect. It didn't drag on without anything exciting happening, the backstory didn't overpower the lovestory and was actually interesting and exciting!

Crane is that dream guy we all want. A little bit crazy, a little bit mean, a little bit kinky, a little bit dark, but he really adores Malah. And she's so sweet, but oh.. the power she holds.

I have never read a book that's SO detailed about everything.
The worldbuilding is absolutely insane and  you get to know all the characters so well.
The writer has done an amazing job with this book!

I was given an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This book is amazing! The world building is brought to the next level through attention to even the littlest details. The characters (both main and side ones) are built well too and this book managed to make me both laugh and cry. This is one of the books I wanted to never end.

If you're looking for a well written book on the darker side featuring morally grey characters and quite a bit of blood - search no more, this is it!

I got this book in exchange for one of my own while looking for new talents, and this is what I think – WOW. This was one of the most immersive books I've recently read. It was a long read that lasted me for a week, but it was something I loved experiencing because of the detailed world, how these magical creatures held their traditions. It truly felt like I'm living by their side rather than reading, and that's a valuable experience for a reader.

Anti hero makes you think dark and this book does not disappoint. Torturer turned saviour helps the fmc to come back stronger than ever. Looking for that spark of light in such darkness we see her thrive. I love having the multiple povs to really get to know the characters.
Lots of triggers, but if you love your romance dark, this one is for you.

I love Kour (Crane) from the beginning although the world is a little confusing it's still a good world building book! The characters are develope well through out the book.

I wasn't really fond of the language that was used, it was more old fashioned then the rest of the books I read but it eventually levels out as you read through the book.

Wow wow wow! What a story! From the get go, things start off hectic. Introduction to Malah and Crane. And seeing some of what Malah has endured at the hands of her husband! Just absolutely despicable what her husband did to her and he had it coming! I love the way the author wrote the sex scenes and the tension between Malah and Crane was insane! I also loved how crane wasn't exactly good but he wasn't bad either. And he was HUGE on consent! I really appreciated that in the story. Loved the fact that malah grew in strength and herself through out the story. It definitely is not a quick read. There is so much to unravel with the king, malah, crane, and the rest of his family. What a punch to the gut emotionally and mentally! This story was nothing but emotional damage

We didn't see them meet. It starts with her murdered husband and her begging him for help. After he has repeatedly tortured her on the husband's orders.

I got bored. She hides in his house while he covers up the muder and fakes her death.

I loved the world building, the mythology, the creative I'm using the powers. But I couldn't get into the romance, the male lead was too indifferent to FMC for my taste
