"Rosalind Kerven, connoisseur of myths and folktales" – THE INDEPENDENT (one of the UK's leading online news websites)
I'm the author of over 70 books published in 22 countries, with total world sales of nearly a million. Specialising in myths, legends, folk tales and fairy tales from all over the world.
This is perhaps more of a three and a half star book than four, but I do like they provide a glossary for unusual words and terms and little boxed sections that deal with cultural issues that might be confusing for kids, like what a peddler is or that the lamp in "Aladdin" would have looked completely normal to someone from that time period. The illustrations are a bit odd. Yes, "Aladdin" does supposedly take place in "China" but that was a blanket term for Asia at that point from what I've found in research, so making it literally China is pushing it. The story is significantly more child-friendly than the original. Nobody dies, for example, which is probably a good thing for a children's book at this level. On the whole, though kids will be surprised this doesn't resemble Disney's version all that much, it would be fun.
Excellent version for kids! Easy to read aloud, great illustrations, and does a great job of providing a historical and cultural setting for the stories. I enjoyed it just as much as A, and she has been re-reading parts of it for the last couple weeks.
