Faced with a looming war, the riders have no choice but to leave the safety of Galdrilene and reach out to the nations for help. But the Shadow Riders are doing the same and not all nations are opposed to their rule.
New discoveries are made, old wounds are reopened and betrayal hides among welcoming smiles.
As one nation begins to unravel it’s clear that some choices, even those made with the best of intentions, can have devastating consequences.

Tears of War is the second book in the Dragon's Call series. The first edition, Embers At Galdrilene, was so amazing I actually began counting down the days until the second installment would come out. I waited, and waited, and waited. It felt as though the book would never come out! When it did, I was not disappointed in the slightest. If possible, this book is even better than the first. What I so love about A.D. Trosper's writing style is that her characters seem so alive it is as though they have been lifelong friends. The places in her books are so realistic I am sure I have been there. Her books play out like a movie screen inside my head. My heart sang with happiness at parts, and in others my very soul mourned. Exaggeration? Hardly. It's hard to NOT be sucked straight into the world created in this series. I dare you to try and stay in the real world while reading it. Go ahead and try. Without giving too much away, I will say that there is a part in the book that killed me. It ripped out my very soul. Seriously. I cried, and I cried, and I cried. It was the kind of crying jag that leaves you nauseous and breathless, with your face aching and your eyes refusing to see clearly. That's all I can say, however. Now, do I recommend this book? I would think the answer would obviously be yes. I believe everyone should read this awe-inspiring, thrilling read. I simply can not praise it enough. Just be prepared for an attachment to the story and the characters. Be prepared for plenty of raw emotion and vivid detailing. Be prepared to be swept away into the world which A.D. Trosper has created for us.
have been waiting for Tears of War ever since I finished the last page of Embers at Galdrilene, and I was certainly not disappointed ! Well, I was disappointed when it ended because I just wanted it to go on and on ! I am already looking forward to the next book in this epic fantasy series.
In Embers, we read about a a world where magic is outlawed and people believe that dragons are extinct, although there are characters with special powers and those who ride dragons to battle ~ both Good and Evil ! In Tears of War, the saga continues as the dragon riders at Galdrilene hope to convince other nations of the world that dragons are real, that magic won't make a person insane and that those nations need to be allies in the battle against the black dragons and their incredibly cruel riders.
Characters introduced in Embers are developed well in Tears of War, with some surprises along the way. On the Evil Side, some are More Evil than others. On the Good Side, some are more mischievous than others, too.
The author gifted me a copy of this book in return for an honest review. Again, for me, switching the point of view of the storyteller from one character to another is sometimes confusing, especially when there are multiple characters telling the story. From time to time, I went back to previous chapters to remember the story line with regard to that character.
Nonetheless, I still gave this book 5 stars because the story is just fabulous, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next one !
After reading Embers at Galdrilene, I was left very satisfied with the story; It was refreshing and creatively written, my favorite dragon themed book of the year, and by the time I reached the ending I was anxious to know what new adventures Tears of War would bring to the Dragon’s Calling trilogy. Once more, author A.D. Trosper did not fail to deliver her fans with another amazing story enriched with magic and colorful dragons.
At the end of Embers at Galdrilene, riders Maleena and Taela were safely rescued from the Shadow Riders in the Kormai after going through a dangerous battle that left casualties on both sides. This time around in Tears of War, we are introduced to new characters, more dragons, and are taken inside intricate cities that serve as new battle fields for the riders.
This book’s main focus is a full introduction of lands previously mentioned, allies and enemies of the world outside of Galdrilene. The riders head off in groups to try to convince the people that not all of the dragons and magic are evil. There are new surprises for Silver Rider Maleena and her bondmate Mckale as they encounter the Ke’han, creatures used to create the deadly Kojen. Blue Rider Kellinar finds himself with more than he can handle, while his protégé Loki is struggling with the title of The Youngest Rider in the History of Galdrilene. Meanwhile at the Kormai, Sadira is conjuring evil plans of her own in revenge against her, now mage, sister Kalina, having the Shadow Riders burn down everything on their way.
I must say that I really enjoyed reading this book, and I especially loved the details of the book cover! If you look closely, you can see several of the colored dragons. Characters that appeared in the first book but had little screen time, now had time to be developed thoroughly, like Kovan, one of the Shadow Riders, from whom we learn of his tragically childhood. As he became a more prominent character, he definitely turned into one of my favorites, but I’ll have to wait to read what author A.D. Trosper has planned out for him in the next book.
On the other side we have new Guardians and mages that we eventually get used to, as the story progresses; but a happy ending was never mentioned and later in the story is where the title is emphasised and we get to know the meaning behind Tears of War. One new Yellow Rider is Anevay a mage raised in Galdrilene that hears the call of her dragon at the beginning of the book and becomes a great ally to the already established, Guardians. She transforms into a very interesting character that adds herself into my favorites along with Serena, of whom I still have great expectations from and I hope the author has something good for her, too.
There were a few plot twist that I did not see coming; yet, if they were necessary for the story to go on, then it was a good choice from the author. The book has a great, smoky battle scene towards the end that keeps you reading to find out how it will end and who won’t end well; we are able to know more of the characters’ background; and the ending events leave the reader curious enough to wonder what will happen in the final book, Ashes and Spirits.
I definitely recommend this book to those who love fantasy, magic and dragons. The first book was amazing, I’m sure just like the author wanted her story to be, and Tears of War is a good sequel, too. I will have to read the next one as soon it comes out to find out about the new addition to the family of Guardians ;) and how the Shadow Riders will end.
Since reading "Embers at Galdrilene" when it came out last year, I've been waiting impatiently for the second book in this series. "Tears of War" was worth the wait. In Embers, author A.D. Trosper gathered together characters with one thing in common - they were users of magic in a world that had been taught to believe that anyone who used magic would go insane. Quite the contrary, these magic users were called to not only use magic but also to a higher call as dragon riders who battle evil.
In Tears of War, these trained dragon riders are sent out to the nations they came from to convince the people that only black dragons are evil and that they will need to work with the colorful dragons and their riders to fight the epic battle of good against evil.
One of the things I particularly liked about Tears of War is that both good and evil are more complex. We see schisms developing in the ranks of the evil black dragon riders. We see that evil can become even worse. We see that good does not always prevail.
Trosper is masterful at creating a believable world of dragons and magic. Returning to Galdrilene after waiting these many months, I felt as though I was reconnecting with friends I cared about deeply. There's always the question with a series about whether the second book will be as good as the first. This second book was even better than the first. And now I'm waiting eagerly for book three.
I absolutely loved Embers at Galdrilene, and was excited (but apprehensive) for Tears of War, Trosper proved my apprehension wrong with this book! She takes you more in-depth with the characters (both the naughty ones and our heroes), and introduces new characters that simply make it hard to choose a favorite! Trosper has a very unique writing style that makes you turn the page, no matter how early in the morning it is, you simply can't stop reading. With such a great story, most people would think that it would be hard to remember every character in each point of view, but Trosper writes in such a way that every person's actions are burned into your memory.
Tears was most definitely worth waiting for. The world Trosper has created is inviting, terrifying, and fantastical. The Shadow Riders and their dragons are terrible, the malevolence of some just twist your stomach and truly make you feel that you are in their presence. The good Riders and their dragons fill you with such love and caring it can nearly bring you to tears.
Tears of War is a WONDERFUL book, in my opinion even better than Embers! With the characters trying to save (or, in the case of the baddies, destroy & control) the world, there's plenty of love, loyalty, betrayal, surprise, and of course with any book with a title of "war", fighting, Tears has something for all fantasy readers. I highly recommend it for the lost fantasy-novel lover.
After just a few sentences I was reminded of how much I loved the first Dragon’s Call book and, apologies for the cliché, but it really was like slipping on an old glove. As I was hoping, the sequel expands on the first book, going into even more depth about the relationship between the riders and their dragons and the world as a whole.
I particularly loved the insight into the treatment and perception of women; it truly is an escape from our accepted reality and it is nice to see the world as it could be through Trosper’s eyes. As expected Tears is a highly detailed novel and it is clear that Trosper knows the world and its characters inside and out. It is certainly a safe place to get lost in, despite the turmoil within the story.

My review: This second book in the Dragon’s Call series does not disappoint. Filled with the rich details of the world we came to love in the first book. The riders develop as they grow in responsibility. The coming war weighs heavy on everyone and you can feel their worry. The battle scenes certainly do not fall flat either. I was on the edge on my seat many times and could not find a good stopping point so I could turn out the light late at night. There is heartbreak and joy fear and valor. I can not wait for the final one in the series to come out. However I will surely have to come back and visit Galdrilene again in future reads to see old friends. Well done Ms Trosper. The book is beautifully written, designed and edited . I could give it no less than a 5 star rating.
OMG! Tears of War was one Hell of a Whirlwind! After reading Trosper’s Bound series and her Raven Daughter Trilogy I knew she was one Hell of an amazing and ingenious writer. She definitely has risen to the forefront of my list of very favorite authors! What I didn’t know was her capability of writing action packed, fight till you die, harrowing, blood boiling, tear wrenching, heartfelt, heart aching, absolutely perfect battles against the likes of Evil that we hope to never see in real life. I mean, Trosper can write romance and love scenes like no one’s business, her complex and intriguing storylines are utter perfection, and her characters are so believable and their relationships so well conceived that it is as if they could dragon slide right out of the page, but what I didn’t know was that she is also one Hell of a battle writer! And if you love intense battles, both on dragon back and on foot, The Dragons Call Series is one you just CANNOT miss!!! (See how I put not one…not two…but 3 exclamation points there?!)
So the new Guardians of Galdrilene, along with Emallya, Bardeck, and Bardeck’s dragon Mernoth, have their hands full. The Shadow Rider’s and their half soul Shadow Dragon’s are determined to take over every village, town, city and kingdom and the only thing standing in their way are The Guardians. The Shadow Rider’s relish in dark, evil, and torturous schemes and will stop at nothing to conquer everything. These characters are some of the evilest I’ve ever come across in the many, many books I’ve read. But the Guardians aren’t just going to stand back and allow evil to reign. So they also make plans, find allies, and fight to hold back the shadows. All of this comes to head in a fierce, harrowing, deadly battle that will push both sides to their limits and set the stage for the final book in the Dragon’s Call Trilogy.
My favorite characters were Maleena and McKale. Their relationship is just so sweet. I loved how McKale tried to protect Maleena and their growing baby, but that she was not about to stand back and let battles be fought and her loved ones die around her. They are both extremely strong, loyal, and heroic characters and I can see them becoming the leaders the Guardians need in the future.
So, this was one Amazing Novel! It had all the feels! I laughed, I cried, and I sat captivated on the edge of my seat in awe of the Amazing storytelling. Trosper has a way of creating these amazing, beautiful, but often dark worlds and she really captures your attention and holds you spellbound. You can’t help but want to know what happens next. But what I didn’t realize was how she could create such dark, heinously evil and terrifying characters that you yearned to see suffer a terrible and tourterist death. And I’m telling you right now, if you are a fan of huge battles then this a series you are not going to want to miss, especially if you enjoy a great dragon battle. The characters and plot draw you in, but the battles against true evil are what truly captivate you.
Galdrilene's Dragonriders are back and so are the Shadow Riders. The conflict heats up in this second book of the Dragon's Call series by A.D. Trosper. The scope of the story blossoms from just the first eight riders to a brewing world war, as the riders must go to back to their homes to convince the nations that not all dragons are black and magic does not cause insanity. Game of Thrones in its scope, Tears of War shows us more about the world the riders must deal with and the kind of enemies they have. I cringe at the power of the Shadow Riders and found myself seriously worried for a few of my favorite characters. With a name like Tears of War, you know bad things are going to happen and if your eyes are dry at the end, you must have skipped a few chapters. A great read, and I eagerly look forward to the next one in the series.
After reading the first installment I couldn’t wait until book two. I enjoy the character and the richly developed fantasy world that breaks the norm of the expected dungeons and dragons feel so many fantasy books tend to lean toward. Nothing like that here. And the use combo dragons, magic and social norms is great. Trosper world construction is not bogged down in heavy exposition you move around with the characters and you are present with them. Great read. I will need book three now.
An unfair review! I read the first book and loved it. I waited several months before I picked up the second. Sadly I'd lost the thread of the story, forgotten the characters and the author did NOTHING to help me. I'm totally bummed. An intro? A bit of background that readers who had just finished book one could skip? Something to help me? So many names and I couldn't tell the people from the dragons. I threw up my hands and gave up.
This is a great series! I am a huge fan of most books with dragons, especially dragon riders! This is a very well written series, with great action and very enthralling characters. The only critique I have is throughout book 2 and 3 there are minor new characters or riders that appear with no introduction. I would have liked to see more hatching intros. Despite that I loved this series! I highly recommend checking it out!
After reading the first book of Dragon's Call, perhaps my expectations were a bit high. While Tears of War was interesting I felt it didn't quite live up to Embers at Galdrilene.
One of the reasons for this is that, with the introduction of even more characters, it got hard to keep straight who was who. I found myself getting confused more often than not. Perhaps this could have been helped if there had been the customary summary at the start of the book that reminds readers what happened in the first book. However, I think a character glossary at the beginning of the book would have been ideal.
Now that I've gotten my big negative out of the way . . .
The characters in this series are very interesting, and it's fun to get to know them even better. There's clearly - just from the title - more of a war coming, and we get a great battle scene near the end of the book where we learn just how serious this is, and that no one is guaranteed to make it through to the end of the series.
Obviously, the rest of this world is going to have to learn of the good dragons, as a war between the black dragons and the colored ones will be loud and obvious. One village in particular befriends the colored dragons and their riders, and I enjoyed watching these people (especially the children) interact with them.
There's one "mystery" in this book that I wish had been resolved. One of the riders is kidnapped, and it's more than hinted that there's a traitor in the midst of the Dragon Riders. Now, to me it felt very glaringly obvious who this traitor is (although it's always possible I'm wrong!), but it didn't come to a head in this book. Hopefully in the next installment, that will be gotten out of the way quickly.
If you enjoy fantasy, or dragons, or magic, this would be a good book for you to check out!
Tears of War is the second book of Dragon's Call. The story shows two sides: the Shadow Riders and the Guardians of Galdrilene. Both sides are gearing up for an upcoming war between dragons that cannot be avoided. The Shadow Riders have discovered a weapon, a collar that would destroyed the link between the dragon and rider and to kill them both. Each side are recruiting nations for alliance. The Shadow Riders coerced rather than to give each nation to choice to chose.
This story has so much actions and characters that the readers/listeners will love this story. In some way there isn't a right or wrong way. The characters of the Shadow Riders, each has been wrong and each seeks vengeance for the pains that have been inflicted upon them. The characters of the Guardians of Galdrilene go beyond the wrong and still chose to do what is morally right. There is also the misconception of magic that each nations believed as the cause of insanity for those who uses magic.
Readers/Listeners would need to listen to the Embers at Galdrilene first. Starting the second book of this trilogy would leave a lot of questions of what have happened in the first book. The story is very enjoyable and will hook the readers/listeners right into the story. I can't wait for the next book in this trilogy.
The narrator, Valerie Gilbert does a wonderful job of narrating the story. It is amazing how the narrator provides so many voices for so many characters in this book. Hopefully, the narrator will come back for the rest of the trilogy.
I was given this book by the author/narrator/publisher via Audiobook Blast in exchange of an honest review. I was not compensated or influence in any way for writing this review.
Loved this incredible sequel to Embers of Galdrilene. The characters were even deeper and richer in this story. I liked exploring each character's home city and seeing how they rallied their people to fight with them in the upcoming war. The author does a great job weaving a story with a large cast of characters and somehow managing to make each of them unique and convincing. I like the way the dragons communicate with their riders and the love they feel for each other. And I really like learning about the different magic/healing powers each dragon has. The ending definitely has a bit of sadness to it, but I think that's important in an epic fantasy series. If all the characters lived/were healed from every injury, I wouldn't feel so worried about them when they went into battle. I'm looking forward to the final book in the series!
This is such a fantastic series. I was a bit frustrated in the beginning of this book though. There were quite a few new characters that were talked about, but never introduced. I understand that they are minor characters, but to just start talking about them, without having the reader know anything about them, it was confusing. Just a small paragraph or two explaining how many new riders appeared over the missing time would have been perfect. That being said, I loved this book and I'm so glad I don't have to wait for the completion. There were a few other editorial oopses that were a bit confusing, but they didn't distract too terribly from the reading. Without giving too much away - and even with knowing, or having an idea of what was going to happen, I couldn't stop the tears or heartbreak. Shadow Riders must die.
An amazing continuation in a series! Once again everything was very well developed in my opinion! I'm anxious to start reading the final book as soon as possible, but at the same time, I think I'm going to be extremely disappointed that it will come to an end!
Book two in the Dragon’s Call series. Even Guardian Dragons cannot prevent the rising evil and it’s the ordinary people who are caught in the middle. Not only between warring dragons, but greedy and evil nobles a well. My only complaint is the need to wait for the third book in the series.
4.5 stars I love some of the characters and really like this story. There are flaws, of course, but they don't ruin the enjoyment for me. I can hardly wait to read the final book in the series.
