This book is truly a quick read packed with information from cover to cover. The book is designed for the busy person, so you can pick up it at your convenience, read a quick story, and then go about your business. Whether you just like to learn new things that aren’t normally taught in school, of if you’re honing your skills for trivia challenges, you’ll definitely find this book entertaining and useful. Some of these stories are ripped from the headlines, while others come from the history books, and some are just weird, but you’re sure to find plenty in here that will keep you reading!
The information is interesting but it needs pictures to go along with each article. I’d like to know what things look like without having to stop and google each chapter.
This was a fun book, full of weird and interesting stories. I'll admit I wasn't sure of a couple but I looked them up and they were true so I'd say it's well researched. Personally I can't sit and read a book like this cover to cover, but I find it perfect for when I'm between books or don't have a lot of time to just pick up and read a few of the short (2-5 pages each) stories. The author has an engaging writing style that makes it easy to pick up. I'd read more by O'Neill as I quite liked this one.
Death seems to be a prevalent theme in this volume. While there are a lot of stories about murder and serial killers, there are also lots of stories about people who were reported to be dead while leaving room to be suspicious about the veracity of such reports.
This was not my favorite book. There were occasionally some interesting tidbits that expanded my view of the world I live in. But, I wish there were more diverse themes instead of such a focus on murder mysteries.
I have read and reviewed a fair number of trivia and other nonfiction informational books by this author. I usually enjoy them, but I wasn't so wild about this one. FYI, while the author does write trivia and other books suitable for children, this one certainly is not as it has stories about the history of birth control and unusual smuggling techniques detailing the use of certain body parts. The book has no organization and is completely random. One story simply follows another without them being under particular umbrellas like the ones mentioned in the subtitle. While the book has history, science, and pop culture “stories”, if you're looking for a particular subject, you'll have to thumb or scroll through to find your favorite topic. The author makes some illogical statements or incorrect statements here and there. For instance, in the chapter on the history of contraception, he states that prior to World War II, intimate relations were primarily for procreation, not p1easure. Say what! That’s a pretty broad statement that he could have no actual idea of! I'd like to see the data and research on that one! Many stories seem to be written to titillate rather than captivate. Not all were truly “stories,” either; for me, “story” means people, not just events or a random grab-bag of information around a topic. Compared to this author's other books, I was disappointed in this book.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
I don't do book reviews like you keep seeing, as I find that some give too much of the plot away and I personally hate that, as it makes the book not worth reading. I much prefer to take the authors back cover write up as a review as it can either intrigue you enough to read the book of provide you enough information to make you decide that the book is not for you. My review rules are: The more stars, the more I liked it. If there are too many typos or errors the less stars I give If the storyline or plot is poor or contains too many errors, the characters are too weak, the ending lacking something, then the less stars I give. Simple, uncomplicated and to the point without giving anything away. Some of the books I read have been given to me by the author as a pre-release copy and this does not bias my reviews in any way.
Wonderful book for the trivia person and anyone interested in strange and weird facts. It's fun to have these facts to share with your friends and family at gatherings. You can read a few stories at a time. Good read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Solid book about science, history, and supernatural trivia. Can be a good bathroom reader or something to pick up and read a few pages every once in a while. Some stories may be way more interesting than others depending on the reader's tastes however.
