When a girl goes missing, and none of the adults can give a straight answer, a childhood game suddenly turns into a real, secret mission.
Phone lines are down. Strange men roam the campgrounds. Financial documents indicate something’s amiss. And hidden security cameras point to a mysterious cottage in the woods.
With heightened suspicions, junior camp counselors Marcus and Alissa recruit their friends to help find the missing girl. In their search, the teens will learn to rely on each other, especially when they encounter a terrible and dangerous secret.
Tim grew up in Syracuse, New York. He currently resides in Maryland where he teaches English, Creative Writing, Film, and Theatre on the middle school level. At the insistence of his own students, he began writing seriously in 2014.
He credits his love for story to his mother, who spent countless hours reading to him and his siblings when they were growing up. Growing up, he devoured the literary works of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Piers Anthony, and many others. Mysteries, thrillers, and fantasies are among the genres he most frequently reads.
When he’s not writing, he’s reading, teaching, camping, or at a live music concert.
Summer camp time has finally arrived with four new junior counselors who have been friends for many years and also attended this camp when they were younger children. A child goes missing in the night and the counselors are told that she went home but a few of the the other children saw a strange man in their cabin the night the child went missing but the adults wouldn't take their stories seriously. The four young teens then become young detectives knowing that something is not right on the campgrounds and they start to investigate other odd happenings that will take them on a dangerous and sinister journey of their beloved camp.
Camp Lenape was a fast and enjoyable read for me. The characters were fun and interesting and very well rounded. The storyline was mysterious and the prologue was wonderful and had me hooked from the first page. I think the book is geared for mature fourteen years of age readers and older due to some of the subject matter which I found interesting and entertaining with being an older adult. I hope the author Timothy R. Baldwin will write a series around to this group of young adults and I will be back to find out what other trouble these teens can delve into.
I want to thank the publisher "Booksgosocial" and Netgalley for allowing me the opportunity to read this exciting YA book and hoping there will be more stories to follow!
I highly recommend this terrific book and have given a rating of 4 1/2 Exciting 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌠
CAMP LENAPE is an early-YA (c. Age 14, early high school) novel, both engaging and intriguing, which I enjoyed very much, and hope to see the protagonists return. Alissa, Marcus, Nate, and Janice are long-time friends and long-term Camp Lenape campers. This year the four are junior counsellors and Marcus' younger sister Bri is a camper. Nate and Marcus enjoy investigative adventures, and stumble into an actual case, both factual and potentially deadly! The characters are well-drawn and immediately elicit reader's empathy and the situation is realistic.
This book was a page-turner. I was curious about what was really happening at the camp. I thought there was a good amount of action and I got a bit of nostalgia while reading. It reminded me of The Goonies and Scooby-Doo, but with a twist.
The adults are telling a lie. That much are clear. Their stories don’t add up. When a girl goes missing, it’s up to the camp counselors to find out what happened.
Fast moving story with solid characters. Each character a distinct personality, and I loved the suspense of the mystery. Plenty of descriptions make the story vivid and full.
A good mystery geared more for teens than young adult.
Narration fit the story.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
Camp Lenape is one of those stories that does a fantastic job of bringing the reader back into the mindset of someone much younger. Being in my 40s, I still feel the nostalgia and memories of my own time spent in the woods, at camps in the summers of my youth.
That being said, the author also manages to weave an excellent tale of mystery and suspense with these young adult characters that kept me engaged throughout.
I hope to read more from the author and I am very much looking forward to re-reading this story again in the years to come.
I loved this story! It’s a tale as old as time, watching a young man struggle through trials which ultimately lead to Marcus discovering self-reliance and bravery. Except, the young heroine is probably the real hero in the story as Alissa easily takes the lead. The characters are well-written and the dialogue flows easy. Twists and turns make this story a fast read. It’s an innocent love tale but also an action packed YA novel. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
is one of those stories where you are curious to know what's on the next page. You eagerly need to solve the mystery. It's quick and easy to read, and I would recommend it for a young adult audience. There, teens can discover the values of friendship through a story of adventure.
Remember back to your days of summer camp? This story follows four soon to be sophomore students as they spend a summer being Junior Counselors. I remember the feeling of being sort of in charge but not an adult yet not a camper. When strange people are seen around the camp area, the junior counselors have a “case” to find out what is going on.
This is a good read for any middle school or high school student. Or,for those of us who fondly remember our camp days. The first book in this series gives the reader useful context on the main characters' personalities as well as their relationships.
The adults at Camp Lenape are hiding something, but they can’t get their lies straight. Now a little girl’s life just might depend on four young junior counselors having the brains and the courage to get to the bottom of what’s going on at Camp Lenape.
This is a short, fast moving, story, with a cast of credible teenagers doing believable things. The mystery is solid and the detection process worked for me. Baldwin also spends a lot of time establishing the teens, their relationships to each other and the adults, and the camp setting. Early on, I felt that there was a little too much of this, but by the end of the story, I realized how important the early chapters were to the climax of the tale. If you like a quick mystery, you’ll enjoy Camp Lenape.
I received this book free from Audiobook Boom in exchange for an honest review.
~I'd like to thank the author for sending me a free copy in exchange for my honest review!~ This was a great mystery. It was written very well, both of the POVs complimented each other perfectly (Marcus & Alissa, and the female POV written from a male author was done amazingly!), and I loved the plot (action and suspense are never far behind!). I also love the just-barely romance between some of the characters, *crossing fingers* maybe it'll turn into something over the next couple novels XD. All in all, I have no complaints, and Camp Lenape will definitely be a novel I will be rereading! ~Full Review To Come~
Realistic characters and dialogue. Story was very interesting early on and kept me reading to find out the secret of Camp Lenape. The adults were awful in this book and it wrapped up a bit fast for me. I would have liked it to last s bit longer.
Timothy R. Baldwin’s Camp Lenape is a mesmerizing mystery. Written for a young adult audience, this novel will also spellbind for an older crowd. Alissa and Janice are excited that they get a chance to be a junior counselor at their favorite camp, Camp Lenape. Marcus and Nate came back to be junior counselors also, these teens dream of taking their friendship to the next level. Maybe Marcus will get brave enough to ask Alissa to the yearly dance. A camper comes up missing, giving Nate the opportunity to use his detective skills he has been waiting to use for years. These four junior counselors suspect there is more to the stories they have been told by the camp owners. It is up to Marcus, Alissa, Nate, and Janice to find the camper before something terrible happens.
Camp Lenape had me captivated from the beginning when the baseball got lost in the woods. Timothy R. Baldwin gradually amplifies the mystery that surrounds this camp. The author takes you back to your own days of camp then twists the plot to something much more alarming. The danger the teenagers face intensify as the novel becomes more gripping. The pace becomes faster as the danger increases and the teens find more clues. Each of the four teenagers adds a different talent or character trait needed to help this camper. The danger Alissa is confronted by makes this a read for a more mature young person. Mild violence towards the end brings this novel to a crime mystery thriller. Overall, this book will take you on an adventure you never expected. The author surprised me with the strength of his characters and the responsibility they took on themselves. I hope to see more from this author as you can feel the energy he injects within his work.
Ahh, summer camp, days and nights full of sun, fun, learning new stuff, making new friends and catching up with old pals, arts & crafts, lots of water activities, squabbling over the top bunks, fighting off a gazillion bugs, sitting around the campfire singing songs and telling stories, coping with homesickness, getting a great tan, hiking through the woods, taking on chores…all in all, a terrific experience except for the obligatory moments of angst. One thing that generally is not part of summer camp is missing campers.
When junior counselor Alissa learns that one of her charges, Bri, has disappeared in the night, she and her co-counselor Marcus (Bri’s older brother) start looking for her and soon discover that the adults don’t seem to be taking this seriously. In fact, the teens believe that lies are being told and they draft a couple of friends, Nate and Janice, to help figure out what’s really going on. Before long, they’re faced with an ugly situation and some really bad guys but, most painful of all, betrayal of their trust.
These teens are dedicated to finding the missing child and, along the way, they learn much about themselves and their hidden strengths. Bringing their stories to life are narrators Brittany Goodwin and James David West whose characterizations are spot on. They also have a good sense of pacing and ramp up the tension when the tale calls for it. They and author Timothy R. Baldwin have crafted a reading/listening experience to be savored by middle graders on up.
Camp Lenape. An ideal escape for children to spend the summer, or so it seemed. Something isn't quite right as kids begin to go missing. Who's involved? Trust no one.
The story is an amazing mystery in the vein of Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew. Marcus, one of the main characters, isn't afraid to break out a flashlight and explore the wilderness surrounding Camp Lenape. Alissa is more reserved, but the gloves were off once one of the girls went missing.
A very well written story that sets up for more adventures. I can't wait to read book two! Timothy Baldwin has knocked it out of the park.
Audiobook version: I did have some issue with the male narrator, David. Occasionally there were some audio quality changes, but nothing major. Brittany brings a very good voice to the table and captures Alissa's point of view well.
Unrelated, I can say adults should not watch "Wet Hot American Summer" before reading this book, because that was the hard visual I had painted in my head, coupled with Baldwins vivid detail of the camp. Let's go to Lenape High School!
It’s supposed to be a fun summer… then a girl goes missing. With heightened suspicions, junior camp counselors Marcus and Alissa recruit their friends to help find the missing girl. In their search, the teens will learn to rely on each other, especially when they encounter a terrible and dangerous secret. Once I started this surreal and exciting adventure I could not put it down. "This is a brilliant read ... well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with and wonderful world building. I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the book with no monetary compensation.
Firstly, thank you to @voraciousreadersonly and the author for a #gifted review copy.
When I requested a copy of this for review I didn’t realise that it was more middle school age. As an adult, I do read YA but I found this a little young for me, even with the topics broached. It felt a little scooby do like.
Having said that, I don’t want to sound like I am putting the book down. It had a solid storyline and it ran with it. It was a short book and was an easy and enjoyable read. It flipped between a male and a female character lead. I think they lacked realistic reactions considering one of their sisters was kidnapped though!
I think with the right aged target audience then this would be a good book. Especially part two when it kicked in more.
Thanks to NetGalley, BooksGoSocial for ARC provided.
Such a excellent YA book, well written, realistic, with brave and heroic teenagers characters. I absolutely enjoyed reading this and reminds me of “The Famous Five” from Enid Blyton.
Who could’ve thought that you’re going into Summer Camp, learning how to grow your personal character and doing fun activities but end up get involved with a challenging thrilling adventures, with smart skills and very brave like the character of Alissa and her friends, you’ve managed to revealed a hidden mysteries!
Thanks to Timothy R. Baldwin for the excellent book
I think this book will appeal to all teenagers (young adults) that like an adventure story. For both boys and girls there is a likeable hero in the form of Alissa and Marcus. Alissa is an independent, tomboy who isn’t afraid to fight off a bad guy and my favourite character. I think this will mostly appeal to the early teens and it is a good clean read.
Camp counsellor friends Alissa, Marcus , Nate and Janice stumble into a real life mystery that they are determined to unload at the summer camp they are working at. A brilliant YA read, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for the arc.
A sincere thank you to the publisher, author and Netgalley for providing me with an ebook copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is not my usual genre, I’m more into romance stories and literary fiction however I wanted to take the opportunity to read something from outside my norm. And I am glad I did!! Thank you for opening up my mind to something totally different.
This story was short and interesting enough to keep my attention until the end. The writing is not bad, but the overall delivery could have been better and the storyline more developed. The pace was rushed and did not flow well at times. Still, I plan to read the next book in the series. 3.4/5.
Alissa and Marcus are teenage junior camp counsellors at Camp Lenape, a summer camp for kids. When Marcus’ sister, Bri, goes missing in mysterious circumstances, camp staff give inconsistent reasons for her supposed return home. Certain that something is seriously wrong, Alissa and Marcus turn amateur sleuth to find Bri. This story would be best for teens, who should find the characters very relatable. I usually balk at stories that switch point of view, but this one flips between Alissa and Marcus to appeal to readers regardless of gender. A good teen read with plenty of suspense and action.
I read this book because I wanted to find something my teenaged grandsons would enjoy reading. I'm glad to say, I found just the book, I think. Most campers like having à counselor for advice, èntèrtainment and other kinds of responsible assistance. At Camp Lenape in the Alleghenies, first-year junior çounselors, rising sophomores in high school who have been exemplary campers, even have a missing person's mystery on their hands in addition to the daily/nightly duties.
This fast-paced story is written in page-turning fashion. As such, my grandsons should by be highly engaged during the prologue and throughout the story as the mystery unfolds rapidly.
The author seemed to really know his audience because not only were the main characters well-formed, likable ànd relatable teens, but he kept the telling short enough without sacrificing an iota of intrigue or suspense.
It took me a bit to get into it but after a couple of chapters it became a really nice read. Camp Lenape has been around for a number of years, and the new junior counselors have all attended the camp for a few years themselves. They find themselves in the middle of a strange mystery. With adults who seem to be acting strange and a girl who has disappeared, who just happens to be the sister of one of the junior counselors. They manage to get themselves into quite a bit of trouble along the way.

easy to read, with a great mystery to solve. The author is a talented writer and has incorporated great teamwork skills into this incredible read. The characters, Marcus and Alissa are fabulous and easy to like. An overall fabulous read.

Camp Lenape is the first novel in the Kahale and Claude Mystery series and is ideally suited for young adults (age 12 – 14) looking for more mature reading material. The story introduces the reader to Marcus Kahale and Alissa Claude, along with their friends Janice and Nate, who are junior counsellors at Camp Lenape. When Marcus’s younger sister Bri sees something suspicious in the woods and later disappears in the evening, the four friends set out on an adventure to solve the mystery.
This is a fast-paced action filled story, with each clue cleverly set to strengthen the mystery and suspense. The writing is simple and easy to follow. From the beginning. Marcus and Alissa are believable, enjoyable characters to read, and the choices, confrontations, and challenges that they face develop their skills and strengths, making them the ultimate teen heroes. The danger that the teenagers are up against toward the end of the novel is unexpected and exciting, causing the reader to worry and fear about what is going to happen next.
My only criticism is that the book ended way too quickly. Rather than seeing the comeuppances that the adults and troublemakers clearly deserve, the reader is told about them in the epilogue, which detracts from the narrative and left me disappointed. I would have preferred the identity of the antagonists and their motives to have been discovered at the big-reveal like in most mystery fiction.
Overall, this is an engaging novel with characters that all readers, both young adults and the older crowd, can relate to.
Marcus and Alissa were camp counselors at Camp Lenape. While playing sports and doing all the fun camp stuff, the two were trying to set an example of character for the young campers.
Told in the shifting POV’s of Marcus and Alissa, story maintains a slow pace, ultimately taking its time to set the tone and the scene. It almost seemed like 2 different cases—2 different mysteries that Marcus and Alissa each were curious about (Marcus wondering about the men in the woods and Alissa curious about the missing camp girl from her bunk.) The different views can lend some different clues to the mystery, but sometimes items were repeated by each character, which took even more time.
An easy read with an interesting mystery. I was compelled by the darkness of the cover and intriguing summary, but the story didn’t fully meet up with the anticipation. As you read through, you uncover more and more clues, but the story really doesn’t going until Part 2 (about 70% of the way in.) I kind of wished this would’ve showed up earlier in the book.
Overall, it’s a nice read with an engaging dialogue that YA audiences will relate to.
