"Mortal Instruments meets Hellboy in this riveting urban fantasy series that is a prequel to the Visions of Darkness Trilogy.".
He was born into a rare demon-hunting lineage...
All his life, Max Damiano has trained with his family and waited for his arcane talent to awaken. On the morning of his fourteenth birthday, his wish is granted: he is a telekinetic.
Now he can fully take part in the family’s Work of keeping the world safe from demons, remnants of a long-gone universe, the Qlippoth, whose very existence is inimical to our world’s reality. His first assignment? To investigate the disappearance of a dozen children in the New York City area. In the center of the disappearances is the New York Under Market, a market for the arcane community run by the transglobal Underwood Corporation.
Concerned that their Market is at the center of these alarming disappearances, the Underwood Corporation hires Max and two of his siblings, Tom and Sadie, to investigate. Will they be able to catch the demonic malefactor in time?
Krysten Harlow began crafting fantastical tales during moonlit nights while listening to the whispers of the winds. Her vivid storytelling invites you to lose yourself in worlds of ancient magic, epic battles, powerful demons and cunning sorcerers.

Max turned 14 and has just come into his power. Now he can start the Work, the family business of demon hunting and protecting the world. His first mission is figuring out where missing children are going and get rid of the person doing it.
The concept of this story is great, but wasn't executed the best. The story could have been longer and explained more about this family and the world they live in. Max is a 14 year old kid who has just come into his powers and the story doesn't really convey how big of a deal this is. His parents seem more like robots than loving figures.
The fight between hunter and demon, while quick, was the best part of the story. You felt sorry for the demon and wanted there to be a compromise for her, and this was why the book received three stars.
Max Damiano’s fourteenth birthday augurs a coming-of-age of sorts – not only is he allowed to go on his first family demon-hunting foray, he also discovers the first of his “arcane” abilities, supernatural talents only those born into Hunter lineages develop. The rest of the Damianos are already acquainted with their gifts, and they’re proud to welcome Max into the family trade. But his next assignment proves trickier. Several missing “mundane” (non-magical) children have disappeared, and if Max’s dad is right, it points to the Under Market, a magical underworld trading district that, while carefully policed, is a hive of shadowy supernatural goings-on.
It’s up to Max and his siblings to root out the demonic perpetrator and send it back to hell. But why is it so elusive? And what do the dark ravings of a kooky fortune teller have to do with the Damianos?
Author Krysten Harlow conjures up a fun little urban fantasy novella that’s well-paced and easy to follow. The idea of an Under Market really excites the imagination. It reminded me of something from Hellboy, while the Damianos wouldn’t have been out of place in something like Mortal Instruments. One of my favorite parts is when they wander through the deserted market after hours; there’s an eerie sense of lingering magic, like an afterglow. An aspect I’d love to see developed in further stories is the notion that ordinary humans who witness the “arcane” happenings are unable to process them, by some quirk of evolution.
I think a bit more time could have been given to fleshing out the family members at the outset, before they embarked on the first demon hunt. We’re given a brief description of their respective abilities, but not much more to individualize them. Also, Max seemed more bored than excited by his Under Market assignment at first. Given that it’s such a big deal, his chance to prove himself to his dad (whose approval he desperately seeks), and he’s investigating a magical cornucopia, one would think he’d be more eager.
Overall, I enjoyed this novella. It had enough creative touches to keep my imagination bubbling over. Ms. Harlow hints at a depth of world-building that could really spin out some cool scenarios in future stories. Max’s later interaction with his dad is very well handled; a bit more of that relationship at the beginning might have given them both a stronger character arc. Even so, it’s a colorful little coming-of-age adventure for the YA paranormal crowd. And I absolutely love the use of the word “arcane” for the magical realm.
Character development is one of those writing things that can be trickier to display in a relatively short work like this one than it would be in a full-length novel. I mentioned this first so that my next sentence would have some context to it. Seeing how Max changed as a result of his adventures was delightful. He behaved just like any fourteen-year-old should as far as his emotional and cognitive development went, but I also saw exciting glimpses of the adult he would soon become. Honestly, that’s all that’s needed in the beginning of a series. I’m glad the author included them while still leaving plenty of room for further development in future instalments.
I would have preferred to see a faster pacing in this novella. There were times when my interest in it wavered because of how long it took for the next action-heavy scene to appear. Introducing the characters and setting was obviously important, but I did find myself wishing that those descpritons and conversations had been broken up more often by conflicts with demons or similar events. The author had plenty of material to work with, and I would have happily gone with a much higher rating if the pacing had been sped up.
The world building in this novella was extensive and impressive. I actually stopped reading a few chapters in to confirm that I hadn’t accidentally started halfway through the series. There was so much attention paid to the countless little details that make a fictional world come to life in my imagination that it was hard to believe this was the introduction, and I mean that in the best possible way. This isn’t an easy thing to accomplish in a prequel by any means. Ms. Harlow should be proud of how seamlessly she wove everything together.
Secrets of the Under Market is the first book in Krysten Harlow’s Damiano Legacies series. Perfect for pre-teens and teens, this novella takes the reader into the life of 14-year old Max Damiano. The youngest in his demon-hunting family, he’s still waiting for his arcane magic to manifest. On the morning Max turns 14, the magic finally makes itself known as he and his siblings are on patrol through New York City. Part of the manifestation includes a mission and Max’s takes him to the Under Market.
The Under Market is an underground arcane community located under the city. Children are missing and the Under Market appears to be the center of those disappearances. The organization responsible for the market wants this to be cleared up as soon as possible, and hires the Damiano family. Scouring the underground market for clues leads Max and his siblings to definitive demon activity. Max gets up-close and personal with danger and may not survive his first mission.
The first novella in the Damiano Legacies series is short, sweet, and to the point. The story grabs the reader and pulls them in for a wild ride in the Under City. The plot is solid, the mystery engaging, and pacing is fast and smooth. The descriptions in Secrets of the Under Market are vivid, movie-like, and easy to visualize. Interesting and fun, Secrets of the Under Market is a must read.
This fast-paced, MG novella was a fun read. I adore books revolving around magical markets and the creatures that frequent them. I also enjoy books about monster hunters and even more so with stories involving hunters with special abilities. This book had all of those plus solid writing, decent character development, and detailed backdrop descriptions.
Overall: This was an easy read and easy to get lost in. I can't think of a better way to spend a bit of leisure time. I definitely recommend this short story to anyone who likes good clean MG tales... especially tales of Magic, demons, demon hunters, magical markets and young protagonists (sporting some pretty obvious daddy issues). This also boasted some other tried and true tropes like coming of age and into one's powers, and a large/supportive/healthy (for the most part) family dynamic.
Welp, I'm off to procure the next book in the series.
~ Enjoy

Definitely a feel of Mortal Instruments to this story. Max is part of the Damiano family. One of the greatest demon hunting lineages in the world. Damiano’s protect humanity at all costs and they’re good at what they do, BUT Max has yet to find out what his power is. Trained to the hilt to fight and defend, this puts a wedge in his relationship with his father and makes him feel inadequate with his place in the family.
This story grabs you from start to finish. The characters are likable and will make you want to get to know them better. Will Max have a cool power? Will he have a better relationship with his dad? What comes next….
I’m definitely intrigued and want to know where this story goes. I’m off to the second novella.
Thank you BookSirens for the free kindle book. I give this review freely.
If you like book about magic, coming of age and into one’s powers, I highly recommend this novella. It was a fun and quick read. This book has good character development and world building, both of which might be even better if the story was longer. Although I actually love a little diversion with shorter stories. Sometimes it’s just what’s needed.
It was an easy read and an nice way to spend some off time. I definitely recommend this story to anyone who likes tales of magic, demons, their hunters and young MCs and look forward to the next installment.

Secrets of the Under Market focuses on Max, the youngest child in a family of demon hunters. Along with two of his siblings, Sadie and Tom, Max is tasked with finding whatever malevolent force is behind the disappearances of half a dozen children.
I enjoyed how Harlow was able to immediately draw me into this magical version of New York. She truly set the scene and wastes no time jumping into the action. Being a novella, story pacing is critical. There was certainly enough to keep me intrigued across all 70 pages. I look forward to seeing how the Damiano legacy continues.

"Secrets of the Under Market" follows Max Damiano whose family has the job of keeping the world safe from demons, which is no easy task! Max is eager for his talent to awaken and to start working beside his family, hunting demons. Max is relatable because we are all looking for approval and praise in our lives. Even at a short read of 77 pages, this book was entertaining and left off with a little cliffhanger. If you are looking for a great start of series with demons and family dynamics, this will surely be the read for you.

I'm a sucker for hidden worlds of magic, and I enjoyed the background to this story. As a short it did suffer a little from the usual issues of having enough time to really build up a character, and Max felt a little two dimensional at times, basically wanting to please his father for the most part while the man refuses to give his son any praise at all.
It's a nice little world builder though, and I'm sure it goes nicely into a main series
A great introduction to the Damianos. Max has just turned fourteen and is expecting his hunter gifts to activate. He gained telekinesis during his morning patrol in New York City with two of his siblings. Thus, his parents elevated him to mission status. Of course, being the youngest, he gets assigned the most boring of tasks. But his diligence pays off. The story has quite a positive ending.
Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Scary. Tragic. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

This is an amazing start to a new series. You get sucked into the story immediately and can’t stop reading. It’s a quick, easy and thrilling read.
The characters are beautifully written and I also love the family dynamic. I sometimes find that novellas are not long enough and boring, but not with this one.
If you like the Shadowhunter Chronicles by Cassandra Clare, you have to read this novella!
Being the first book in the Damiano Legacies series by Kysten Harlow, it's a great start to an interesting storyline. We get introduced to Max, who has demon hunting in his blood. On his fourteenth birthday, he gets the gift of telekinesis that allows him to finally be a part of his family's work. This book is fun, fast-paced with action, plenty of world-building and has really loveable and creative characters. It sets up the plot well for the next two books in the trilogy.
Secrets of the Under Market is Book 1 in The Damiano Legacies by Krysten Harlow. I thought this book was interesting and different. It is a fantasy and a SiFi but I think it is blended into its own genre. This story centers around Max and the reveal of his talent. Max and his family fight demons in NYC. Because the book is a novella, it can be read in one sitting. I feel that this will be an interesting series. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
I enjoyed this novella but I think 7 chapters barely even qualifies as a novella. This story has so much potential and would make an awesome full length novel. I will read the remaining pieces of this story but I have the feeling that they could all be combined into a full story. It would really be great if this author could now that she has 5 pieces written would write a full length novel.
Secrets of the under market by Krysten Harlow. The diamond legacies book 1. I really really enjoyed this book. Great story and characters. Especially Max he was my favourite. I did like the rest of the family Tom Sadie Estelle Renee. Their mum Janet and dad James. Although I wasn't sure about James. I'm looking forward to book 2. 5*.
A short, interesting read. I liked the viewpoint of young Max, trying to fit in with his family's work that he always revered. And how he realizes it is not always all fight and action as he thought it to be.
The demon world build-up is perfect. Loved that I learnt some new vocabulary to impress. ;D
In this first book, introduced to Max the youngest in a hunter family who fights demons. In this story, Max finally comes into his power and is sent with his siblings on his first investigation. Was a quick fun read with a mystery to solve . Quick paced and good feel for what is happening as Max helps solve the mystery. It did make me laugh and I enjoyed the story.
Fun and interesting. I want an Under market too! The protagonist is young so if you're not a YA fan - then this might not be for you. But the premise is solid and the writing is lovely. I enjoyed this little novella a lot - more soon please!
A fast paced and creative urban fantasy filled with thrills and action on every page. The characters were great and the storytelling was amazing considering the short length of the book. Definitely looking forward to seeing how the series continues.
I really enjoyed reading this novella. It was the perfect length to read on my lunch break. It moves along at a nice pace, has characters that you fall in love with and want to know ore about and a story that will grab you and keep you reading till the end. This is a must read.

Fourteen-year-old Max and his family are demon hunters. When they are assigned a case in the Under Market, things get a little crazy.
This was a quick read for me. Things flowed well. However, I felt the story was a little rushed and everything happened all at once. Some of that is due to it being a novella, but I still could have used more tension and build. I also found the characters to be a little flat and not as fleshed out and real as I'd like. There was just something lacking in this book, and even though it wasn't a bad book, I wanted more. I am not sure if I'll read the rest of the series, but I do like the premise. Maybe someday I will come back to it. I also felt that maybe I'm not the target audience for that book, because I'm long past my teen years. It does skew younger, but I also read a ton of YA books. Maybe that's another reason that I didn't connect with the book as much as I would have liked.
This is off to a fantastic start! It’s well written and draws you in immediately so much so that you cannot put it down. It’s a fun and thrilling ya urban fantasy novella with fantastic characters set in an intriguing world with intriguing abilities and a great family dynamic and I look forward to reading more .
