Delphine has been fae-marked from birth, treated as a curse despite the fact the once treacherous fae haven’t been sighted in decades—in fact, no one in Delph’s village has so much as laid eyes on one of the folk in nearly a century.
Right up until a fae turns up on her doorstep, demanding Delph as down payment.
No sooner has she set foot in the fae realm, however, then she learns she’s no mere collateral in a deal made with the lord that owns her family lands. She was selected for a reason, hunted down for a single purpose.
The fae courts are fading. The folk disappearing.
Only four courts remain. Four princes determined to save their crumbling kingdoms.
And Delph … Delph may just hold the key to save them all.
But even as Delph learns to see past the feared glamour of the fae realm, she quickly learns the impossible position she’s found herself in. The fae may not be the monsters she was led to believe, but in order to save them … she may have to become a monster herself.
A Veil of Truth and Trickery is the first of a New Adult reverse harem fantasy series that may contain content sensitive to some readers.
I saw this book advertised by the author for months on Tiktok and immediately downloaded it on Kindle Unlimited when it was released, but I feel a bit betrayed upon finishing it. We were promised a spicy, dark, RH romance, but we didn’t really get any of those things yet.
Yes, the premise is interesting: a young woman marked by the fae, stolen away to their realm in hopes that she can save their magic. She meets four fae princes, meant to guard her throughout this journey, and spicy, dark romance ensues. Right? Nope, not really. The relationships built within this first book were flimsy, at best. One prince declares his love for the main character, in spite of the fact that they’ve talked for maybe 20 minutes throughout the novel, and she’s spent the rest of the time scowling silently on her horse. (Which, to be fair, is a perfectly normal reaction considering her situation.)
To add insult to injury, most of the characters were devoid of personality— set apart mainly by their contrasting appearances and varying levels of aggression, and lacking in any traits that would warrant someone falling in love (or lust) with them in the first place. Even the singular “spicy” scene in the book was lacking in both heart and heat, given that the characters barely knew each other at the time. It’s not even RH yet, there just *happen* to be multiple handsome men in close proximity of the main character.
Should you read this book? Sure! The author has presented us with a pretty interesting fantasy world, and I’m sure the next books in the series will delve further into the relationships and lore begun here. However, if you’re looking for something like what the author described on Tiktok, maybe skip this one, or wait until the sequel is released to avoid any cliffhanger headaches.
I'm very conflicted about this book. It's a clear ACOTAR rip off with the intention of being a reverse harem. I don't understand the magic system. What is the purpose of the truth bringers? I appreciate that the MC is strong willed but why are they immediately so attracted to her? There's no romance in this. Spice was a 1/5. Writing was good tho. I will read the second one.
Reread: this is only three stars because I like the writing and world building. There's no chemistry with any of the princes and this is for sure not a reverse harem like the author is promoting it to be.
I saw this book on booktok today, which happened to be the day it came out. I was pretty excited to read it, but honestly… I was disappointed. I read the whole thing in one sitting only because I knew I would DNF if I put it down, & I hate to DNF a book. The world building seemed really weak, the characters were bland & uninteresting, & overall it was really slow. It’s being touted as a “spicer, reverse-harem ACOTAR” but where was the spice?? It was basically negative on my spice meter. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but I was not a fan. :(
I read this book because it was all over my fyp and explore page. I thought ok, 😮💨spicy😮💨 ACOTAR, why not give it a shot (because that was LITERALLY what the author said in all her reels).
MAN OH MAN WAS THAT CLICKBAIT🤪 Its not that the story was bad, its just that I wanted to personally go into the book and slap Delphine because she annoyed me so much. I don’t know what it was about her, but she is just so idiotic and annoying. like "oh some fae princes have kidnapped me, let me fuck one of them"
miss girl??? no. i mean, where's the flavour. the author marketed this book as a mmf or whatever (faerie threesome porn i think) and i got mediocre (that's being nice) kim k sex tape type smut?
I didn’t even bother reading the next book just because of how bad this one was. I kept thinking that the more interesting parts would come later on in the book, and by that time, the book got over like excuse me?
If you market a book as spicy, it had better be 💳💳💥💳💳💳💥💳💥 yaknow. Because all I got from this book was trust issues about authors on Instagram.
This book was absolutely not what the author marketed on TikTok. They were trying to capitalize on the popularity of ACOTAR but didn’t deliver in this book. Zero RH themes so far. “Love interests” are one dimensional and I’m still unsure why they’re so connected to Delph. The majority of this book is the journey between one court and another, so fairly one-note. It did provide a good plot base for subsequent books. Hoping for a little more spice and well developed character relationships in the next book!
This review will be limited as I’m trying to avoid all spoilers as release for this book is in about 3 days! [Trigger warnings at the bottom]
Overall this book was great – it covered enough world building (and has a map thank god) and had plot twists galore (what else can you expect, faeries are sneaky!) and the ending left me wanting to know more!
The pace was a bit slow for me though; the whole book covered a trip from one court to another with not much focus on character development for everyone; they all seemed to be a bit one dimensional at times, which gave me no real chemistry. Action points were really good, although some felt more like ‘lily pad points’ (just there to keep the story going forward) and the aftermath of those would have been great opportunities to really delve into more detailed development.
I also found myself looking for smut more but that could just be me reaching after some of the others books I’ve read recently; this book didn’t really touch on the RH aspect as much in my opinion.
Of course this is only book one and it felt like it was the kind of first book of a series that has one general purpose: foundation and setup. I’m expecting big things from the next book though, especially after that cliffhanger!
If Delph never sees Sol again, I will riot.

Adult paranormal RH romance. Intended for 18+ only. TW: s*xual assault/r*pe (brief, mentions, no detail), asphyxiaphobia, k*dnapping, mild t*rture (brief, not overly detailed), thalassaphobia (brief moments)
Real quick, the positives: the world building was really cool. Sure, it was similar to ACOTAR, but I think the author found a way to distinguish it from that, and I am genuinely really interested in learning more about the starlight fae/general world lore. The friendships and side characters were really interesting, and I think that if these were fleshed out more in book two, it would make it a lot more enjoyable. I also think that the end of the book was by far the strongest part of it, both action and plot-wise. So it does set the reader up in a way that they want to read book two, just to find out what happens next.
And now, the less fun stuff. I really wanted to enjoy this book, and I’ve been looking forward to it for months. It seemed like a neat premise, and the author marketed it as a darker, spicier version of ACOTAR. Unfortunately, none of that really came through in the actual story. First of all, there is literally one very short, very awkward sex scene in the entire book. There was no chemistry between the characters, very little build up… So. Definitely not spicy. Delph isn’t particularly likable. She’s relatively one dimensional, and the fact that the author has to make literally everyone else in her (human) life abusive/bullies/objectively shitty really speaks to the fact that her character cannot be held up without situations that paint her as a victim.
Second of all, the love interests are bland and uninteresting. Most of them cannot be distinguished from each other personality-wise, and the chemistry between them and Delph is basically nonexistent. I feel like the author was hoping to have a sort of strangers/enemies to lovers arc through the book, but it seemed like either they instantly fell in love with Delph (for no identifiable reason) or just… Hated her the entire time but then tried to kiss her once?
Not to mention the fact that all the women in the book (besides Delph) are offensive stereotypes. The evil stepmother, the multiple women who choose to hate Delph because the respective men that they are into are more interested in Delph… And, of course, the scorned girlfriend and would-be rapist? It’s like in order to make Delph look good and to ensure that literally no other woman could be a potential love interest for the supposed RH, the author chose to make all the women really, really crappy.
Which, ironically enough, brings me to the strongest character relationship of this book: Tallulah and Delph. Sure, Tallulah started out as yet another woman who hated Delph for existing. But by the end? She’s protecting Delph with her own sword, betraying her sworn Crown Prince, and overall being a badass. THIS IS THE ENEMIES TO LOVERS ARC THAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN. I AM BEING COMPLETELY SERIOUS. Screw all these other guys, Tallulah and Delph have way more chemistry! I am a firm Delph x Tallulah shipper.
Like seriously. You’re telling me that all these ~powerful~ princes can’t get it together to try and save the girl they all claim to be into, but one badass female guard who HATED Delph for most of the book can?! These men all suck, Tallulah is the real MVP. I think that this relationship and Delph’s relationship with Wylan are the saving graces of this book.
Overall, it just isn’t what I was hoping for. I can see what the author was trying to do, but the book could’ve used a lot more character interactions to build up relationships, and just a stronger group of main characters that are more firmly set apart from each other. I might read the second book when it comes out, because the ending did feel stronger, but honestly? Probably not. Hopefully other people enjoyed this more than I did, but if you are looking for a darker, smuttier ACOTAR with a RH (what she marketed) this is not the book for you.

This was a bit disappointing 😅. I saw the author hype it up on Instagram, and she promised a lot of fabulous things in this book (and series). However, this first book didn’t deliver - but maybe the next one will be better. Series similar to this one have swallowed me up, making it impossible to put them down. This one, did not have that effect. It took me so long to get into it, and I’m not even sure I really did. The premise is good, but I’m just not sure it’s enough.
Delphine, a fae-marked girl, has had a life where people have treated her like a 'curse.' One day, she ends up in the fae realm after being a 'prize' in a bargain between her people and a fae prince. The magic in the fae realm is fading, and Delphine might be the solution to that. There are four fae princes, but no reverse harem as stated - it might come in the following books? 🤷♀️
I had high hopes. I was promised a spicy, dark, reverse harem fantasy and that wasn’t delivered. At all. I hate giving negative reviews but this book just failed to reach any standard. The plot was rushed, there was little to no world building, the magic system was sort of a mess, it wasn’t dark, the characters were poorly developed (especially the mc) and the marketing was very poorly done.
I feel like it had potential but sadly didn’t pull through.
I skimmed the second half of the book simply because I can never dnf a book without feeling bad, but if I had the willpower, I definitely would’ve.
I read this book after seeing the author's reels about it on instagram. Unfortunately, it was really not for me. The story didn't feel realistic, the relationships didn't make sense, and the main character was unlikeable while being universally liked. A low two star read for me.
I discovered this amazing book while scrolling through tiktok and she said it was ACOTAR inspired i couldn’t help myself.
I loved the story and world building in this, it was very interesting to see a world almost like prythian but dare I say better, more complex? I was drawn to this book from the very first sentence.
I also really loved how fast pace everything was, it kept going and it never dragged on. I loved that I was never confused either. The characters were a lot of fun to get to know and I can’t wait to see how they develop in the next one.
The author really surprised me with this one; and I can’t wait for more. I definitely recommend.
It would've been a really good read if only the relationships developed more. She didn't get to actually know them at all. And literally none of the Male leads interacted with her that much for them to say that they liked her the moment they did. It was completely unprovoked and early. At first when one of them "declared" that all of them liked her a lot i literally thought that I skipped a few chapters, bc i thought "I've literally seen no scenes with them together whatsoever". This is the worst kind of insta love.
Also I found so annoying the fact that she was so set and desperate in returning to her world and town when literally she'd only been nothing but miserable since the day she was born. No one on that town wanted her. I did not comprehend the length she was willing to take so she could return to that place. It was so stupid.
On another note the story was okay. The end was much more interesting and dramatic than the whole story. Probably the only reason I'm reading the next book is bc of the cliffhanger.
I will say it again, if there were more scenes were they actually get to know each other, then there's a reason and excuse for their infatuation. If this book were better developed it would've actually been in my favorite reads of the year.
On a side note I absolutely loved Nyx. He's a dumb himbo prince. At least for the first half.
Originally gave this two stars then saw some recent three star reads I gave and downgraded this to one to be fair in comparison. If good reads gave half stars I would give this a 1.5 to 1.75 - not quite a 2 but not a true 1.
Context: I learned about this author from tik tok. I almost pre-ordered the physical copy but ended up passing and read this on KU. From her account this was positioned a very spicy reverse harem ACOTAR.
Well, to kick things off 1) I am so glad I read this on KU and didn’t buy it 2) it is definitely ACOTAR inspired
The good: the last 1/3 of the plot actually got relatively interesting. If the second book is also on KU I probably will give it a go to see if it stays somewhat interesting. One of the characters is actually decent. The demon, Wayland, who really wasn’t in the book that much, was by far my favorite character in the entire book. Actually, Wayland is spectacular. If more characters were that interesting and with that much depth/personality I might have enjoyed the book a lot more.
The bad: this is a ACOTAR rip off. Extremely similar premise but with quite poor word building and a main character who could not be a worse pick me girl if she tried. This book was pitched by the author as being spicy. Well, in my opinion I’d give it 1 maybe 1.5 spicy pepper ratings. I can see the set up happening for the RH but frankly if you try to go viral on tik tok saying it is spicy ACOTAR then in all fairness I can’t hold the book being a rip off against you but I most certainly be disappointed by the mediocre smut.
All in all, it is a quick easy read that isn’t terrible. A few times I almost gave it up but the last little bit was good enough to make me glad I didn’t. I will read the next book if it is on KU, but if it’s not I’ll just cut my losses and call it good. I can definitely see it being people’s jam and maybe with some of the world and plot foundation being built out the second will be more enjoyable.

Yawn. ACOTAR this is not, despite the authors promises. I am so disappointed. The characters have no personality. They are all weirdly attracted to the MC even though SHE has no real personality. The world building is fantastic, hence the star, but it felt so rushed and a bit boring to be honest. I bonded with none of the characters and the spice that we were promised was like 1/5. HOWEVER, as I said the world building was interesting and the plot was solid, if a bit shallow, so I will be reading the second one and I am hoping this is a prequel of sorts that will launch the main personalities and stories
Without giving too much away, I was super disappointed in this book. It was marketed on TikTok as RH and similar to ACOTAR, but personally I didn't think it was either of those. Plot and relationships were flimsy, world building was not well done, and to be totally honest I found the main character extremely annoying. Just a big letdown.
This didn’t even live up to my extremely low expectations 😭
I would like to bring up the fact that they SNORTED GNATS again. Gnats as in the bug. That flies. and they did it while the gnat was alive if I'm remembering correctly (which I may not be due to a trauma response brought on by sheer disgust). Why was that necessary? Why did I need that visual?
I am embarrassed to say I read this book. I don't like giving bad reviews, but this is honest. It didn't have much of a plot, the characters were shallow and it just seemed distasteful. I didn't care for the writing style and there were numerous grammar/spelling errors. I also found myself unattached to the characters and the story being told because it was not interesting and there was no actual character development or appealing conflicts. I skipped over/ skimmed the majority of the book because I just couldn't read it. The ending I don't even want to talk about. Let's just say *shocker* (sarcasm).
everything seemed very fast and underdeveloped :/ there really wasn’t any content close to what they had advertised (RH, spice). honestly it was a bit of a let down after I saw the author hyping it up on TikTok. this is just my impression, though. you may love it
really wanted to like this book because it was advertised as just the type of book i’m looking for. it didn’t live up to what it was touted to be, unfortunately. i’ll read the next because i’m curious, but i do wish it wasn’t being advertised the way it was.
UPDATED: 2.5 ⭐️ I was looking though my highlights and decided to upgrade for this quote alone which I think is actually really fucking beautiful -
“I’d never seen a human die before, but somehow, I didn’t think it would amount to this. This wasn’t the cutting short of a life. This was the ending of an eternity. It was more like watching a star die, the light in his eyes burning so fiercely for that final moment as the huge piercing end of the fiend’s tail sliced straight through his body as if it were nothing more than smoke.”
2 ⭐️ right. so. I was super excited for this series and honestly I don’t remember why. Half of it made absolutely no sense and the other half was so cliched. There were one or two good lines, I’ll give it that. But I just… I’m at a loss for words. I’ll have to come back when I’ve processed this more.
This was an easy read about a girl who is stolen from the human world and taken to the fae world. This one got 3 stars for some inconsistencies in the story, some misspellings, and wrong word usage.
Goodreads doesnt let us use more specific numbers but I would rate this book at 4.8. It is very very good and pretty fast paced. It reminds me of ACOTAR but it is different enough for me to be very entertained. I need the second book but its not out yet so I will promptly die until it is.
ummmmmm idk about this one. the book is meh, might even be two stars but the book is promoted so incorrectly that i felt even more disappointed and bored reading this
Honestly I saw this advertised so well on tik tok but was pretty disappointed I won’t lie. Did not finish it because I just couldn’t keep reading. Very wattpad vibes :(
