Fasten your flippers, we're diving into an underwater adventure! Dazzling color photographs and simple text reveal the amazing world of creatures living under the sea.
This book is an early elementary school reader book. It informs the reader about whales, their different sizes, type of animal and how they breathe. It tells you how whales are able to swim and where they live. The book has a glossary and index at the back, including a word list. There is also information about internet sites and places to read more about whales at the back of the book.
This book is a basic, factual book about whales. I liked the pictures, they were extremely detailed and showed pictures of whales up close. I liked how the text was simple, and easy to read for a young child, even a beginning reader. (Some words were difficult.)
Perhaps the biggest thing that resonated with me would have to be the pictures. The photographs are so detailed and specific, that children can really grasp what a whale looks like up close. The book also talks about different kinds of whale, and has great pictures of them as well.
Other than the pictures, I was not really drawn to anything else in the book. To be honest, I was kind of bored. I prefer nonfiction picture books to be stories rather than factual information.
I liked this book, I just would use it differently. I think of possibly a third grade class learning about research. They are finding their own information from different books. I can see myself using this book as a resource for any student doing a project on whales. For a class reading, to get the students interested in something, I probably would not use this book. Unless the student were really interested in whales, they would probably find themselves pretty bored while the teacher was reading this.
For that possibility, I would recommend this book to be in the classroom as a research activity, or for leisure reading, but as a teacher I probably wouldn't use this book for group interactive reading lessons.
Although I am glancing through this now I didn't actually read this at all. My Mom read it to Julia one night while I was out and frankly, since I was off the hook with it I was staying off. I do feel like I have to take a few quick looks to be able to say anything about it for myself though. As far as Julia's concerned she said it should have 3 stars and that she liked the pictures. She said she wishes it had "better" information because who doesn't know what blubber does? And who doesn't know about a whale's blowholes? :) I do have to admit, this is very basic. As in, "Most whales have fins on their backs. Fins help whales balance. Flippers help whales steer." Julia's into more detailed info when she wants to learn about something so I'll have to find another book that can really give her what she wants if her interest remains. The book does include some pretty cool, although still basic, pictures and the end of the book has not only a glossary but a few books if the child wants to learn more along with a few interest websites to check out. That's pretty cool I think.
If you want to know about whales then this book is perfect for you. This book will give you details of what a whale is, what they do, and what they look like. Even if you don't know how to read in english very well, no worries the book is also in spanish giving you the exact same details but in your language. If you need to know about whales or just curious about them then i recommend reading this book.
My 7 year old son recently borrowed this book from his school library.
The book gives information on what whales are, how they breathe, what they look like, and how they swim. The book has colorful pictures to go along with each page of information. My son needed very little help reading and understanding the information.
Recommended for beginner readers that enjoy non-fiction.

I personally thought Ballenas Whales was a good book. It mentions the basic things to know about whales. I learned that whales "breach", which means to jump out of the water. I also learned that whales can grow as big as the size of a big airplane. Whales tend to swim to warmer water in the fall.
this book is good it can be great for doing a report on whales. it gives you facts about whales and what they can do. They have really good pictures on the whales.
